Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The best soundtracks are like movies for the ears, and O Brother, Where Art Thou? joins the likes of Saturday Night Fever and The Harder They Come as cinematic pinnacles of song. The music from the Coen brothers' Depression-era film taps into the source from which the purest strains of country, blues, bluegrass, folk, and gospel music flow. Producer T Bone Burnett enlists the voices of Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, Ralph Stanley, and kindred spirits for performances of traditional material, in arrangements that are either a cappella or feature bare-bones accompaniment. Highlights range from the aching purity of Krauss's "Down to the River to Pray" to the plainspoken faith of the Whites' "Keep on the Sunny Side" to Stanley's chillingly plaintive "O Death." The album's spiritual centerpiece finds Krauss, Welch, and Harris harmonizing on "Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby," a gospel lullaby that sounds like a chorus of Appalachian angels. --Don McLeese

O Brother, Where Art Thou?.......2007-05-28
My 1-year old grandson goes to sleep listening to some of the songs on the album, unless he is bouncing up and down to the faster numbers. I have therefore listened to the songs many, many times, and enjoy them every time. They are easy to listen to, to sing along with and to rock the baby with!
MORE OF AN IMPULSE PURCHASE FOR ME.......2007-05-26
I regretted buying this after listening to it once. I haven't listened to it since and that's about three months ago. Simply put, without the movie to provide a context, the music itself doesn't sell itself. There are four cuts of 'I'm a Man of Constant Sorrow", two by the same artists which goes a long way to proving my point. I haven't seen the movie in a few years and I'm sure there's a logical reason for the song being repeated in the soundtrack that many times, but I can't remember what it is. Sometimes I like roots music with clear acoustic instrumental sounds and soulful voices. But as for an introduction to this type of music for a general listener, this is not the CD to get. It's mostly for the already converted.
A real cheer-me-up CD.......2007-05-22
Couldn't feel bad while listening to this soundtrack - skipped over the serious stuff and just played "Happy"!!
Great Listening.......2007-05-12
What a wonderful alternative to todays so called music. I never tire of the great variety of down home melodies.
For everyone who loved the movie.......2007-05-12
Oh Brother if you liked the movie you will love this CD, a great blend of poignant, funny and foot-tapping music.

Modern folk and blues rarely sounds as inventive and colorful as the Wood Brothers' spare, soothing studio debut. Currents of jazz, pop, and country also ripple through these 12 lovely arrangements built around Chris Wood's upright bass (previously heard in Medeski, Martin & Wood) and Oliver Wood's gentle acoustic and electric guitars. It's not simply that the brothers' sweet, high voices have the genetic gift of close harmony: they're in absolute synch creatively, too. So when one's singing lingers over a lazy phrase in a number like the languid ode to living "Chocolate on My Tongue," the other hangs back on his instrument until just the right, complementary moment. Drummer Kenny Wollesen, who plays on a handful of tracks, is on the same wavelength--never rushing or pushing the Woods' behind-the-beat sensibility. And the rich dark tones of the bass and, in particular, slide guitars perfectly illuminate their unhurried stories about spiritual discovery and the trials of life. All of which makes Ways Not to Lose a delightful, relaxed listening experience. --Ted Drozdowski

Surprise hit!.......2007-05-03
If someone had told me a year ago that I would now be listening and singing along DAILY (mostly in the car, but sometimes in the shower--better acoustics for singing "Spirit" and "The Truth is the Light" all bluesy) to a CD from the "folk" bin, I would have called that person crazy. Now I've been to see The Wood Brothers twice and am eagerly awaiting their next CD. I am a fairly new Medeski Martin and Wood fan (Chris Wood being the bassist in both bands) and found Ways Not to Lose while perusing their website. TOTALLY different music and just as enjoyable! I like that it's just the two brothers and their two instruments (okay, and a little bit o' drums). It makes me feel all nostalgic...for what exactly, I do not know. The songs are infectious and I seem to have a different favorite every few days. I agree with what some of the other posters have said...every single one of the songs is a keeper, not one bad or even so-so one. I also recommend their Live at Tonic CD. AND I recommend whatever their next CD is because I've already heard some of their new songs at their shows and am all a-quiver with anticipation.
Good music OK recording.......2007-03-08
I got this CD after seeing and loving the duo on the Public Radio show Mountain Stage.
On the show they played as a duo and I was happy that on the record that there were no additional musicians or studio stuff.
All of the songs are great, to me they have sort of a bluesy style that has hints of Van Morrison. My favorite is Luckiest Man Alive.
Anyway my only complaint is that the quality of the recording is not that good. I have a tape of the radio show with them on it and it is actually clearer than the album. I hope at some later time they will do a live album with a really crisp sound quality that has some of these songs on it.
In the meantime enjoy this album although the bass is MUCH crisper in real life and PLEASE go see these guys live!! Totally worth seeing!!!
Sonic and musical masterpiece.......2007-02-08
Bought this on recommendation from a hifi forum to which I belong. It is wonderful music and the sound quality is fantastic. Exceptional recording. Great songs with deceptively simple arrangements.
better with time.......2007-01-16
I wasn't affected one way or another on my 1st few 'spins' of this CD.
However, I kept putting it on and it has really grown on me - a sign of a strong CD...after a while it gets infectious.
Just don't know if I'd call it folk..more like modern blues. The instrumentation is sparse or make that uncluttered, but effective.
Wow are these guys amazing!.......2007-01-12
The Wood Brothers (Oliver Wood guitars, vocals, Chris Wood standing bass, vocals, and Kenny Wollesen, drums and percussion) are wonderful. They are distinctive and unusual, kind of folk, kind of blues, kind of jazz...kind of not like anything else out there. With the exception of one traditional song Angel Band, Chris and Oliver wrote all the songs and there ain't a lemon among `em. They somehow manage to be mellow and edgy at the same time, though how that is managed I have no idea. I do know I have been spinning this cd nonstop (well, truth be told, I have been iTuning it nonstop on the old `puter, but you know what I mean) since I bought it a few days ago, and have already ordered another of their cds. The bluesy smooth Chocolate On My Tongue is my favorite (at least right now) but every song is wonderful. Check `em out!

A Fantastic Find.......2007-06-27
Somehow knowledge of this band escaped this major fan of folk and traditional music. Luckily I heard a few tracks on WXPR's Bluegrass Saturday. I called Harold immediately and asked him who they were. Within seconds I had ordered the album. Loved it, love them, one of my favorite albums. I now know what jamgrass means.
Must Own It.......2005-05-08
You might call me a biased jamband fan, but YMSB's music cannot be denied. YMSB is a some sort of offspring of bluegrass, and their hard hitting lyrics and perfect delivery mesh well. They play with so much passion and energy, and they are a just plain fun to listen to. This a four member band headed by a mandolin(Jeff Austin), stand up bass(Ben Kaufman), Banjo(Dave Johnston), and acoustic guitar(Adam Aijala). They also had a special guest David Anger on the fiddle which added a nice touch to the band. This cd is massive and includes 23 tracks, with many of them spanning over 7 minutes. YMSB isn't a band that takes itself too seriously and throughout the cd they joke around and are hilarious. These songs are the best songs on the cd in order of importance.
1)Traffic Jam- catchy, contaigious, and fast paced. A slow build up to about 1 1/2 minutes then they really do some heavy jamming, and don't stop for the rest of the song. Great fiddling and banjo work throughout. Superb! Great JAM!
2) Peace of Mind- a little slow to get to the jam but well worth it. Intersting fiidle work to start it out and then it blossoms into a nice groove that flows perfectly into Snow on the Pines.
3) Snow on the Pines- great build up and rhythm. Some of my favorite lyrics in the cd. EXCELLENT mandolin pickin. So catchy i got to put this song on now.
4) Kentucky Mandolin- great fiddle/mandolin tune. Great bass solo near the end that has this funky groove carring on, very chill. At the end of the song YMSB are just plain hilarious, and every time I hear their dog hollars I crack up.
5) Bloody Mary Morning- I love this cover, nough said. All YMSB really were on.
6) Left Me In a Hole-straight up bluegrass, and is a very fun and happy tune.
7) Little Rabbit- Again this song is just appealing, more blugrass-esque but has a long extended jam. Dave Johnston carries the tune along with the banjo and never lets up.
I wish i had the patience to write a review on every song, but believe every song is worth while. Luckily I got see YMSB at the FoX theatre, and they are amazing live. They offer alot of crownd interaction unlike many big name jambands. If your into SCI, Phish, Leftover Salmon, Keller Williams, or whatever just check these guys out.
Able to incite a crowd to riotous support of jamgrass music.......2005-01-07
Playing Time - 55:25 (disc 1); 65:47 (disc 2)-- A large contingent of Yonder Mountain String Band fans were out in full force at Planet Bluegrass in Lyons, Colorado in September 2003 for the live recording of this 23-track album at Kinfolk Celebration 2003. The band's distinctive jamgrass sound is supplemented with the expert fiddling of Darol Anger. Four tracks at the end of the 2-CD album also include Rashad Eggleston and Brittany Haas. Regular band members Jeff Austin (mandolin), Dave Johnston (banjo), Adam Aijala (guitar), and Ben Kaufmann (bass) all contribute original material to the band's spirited repertoire. Besides material from Willie Nelson, John Hartford, and Bill Monroe, the band also covers four songs penned by songwriter Benny "Burl" Galloway. The lyrical messages of their original material are interesting. Their material is well-rehearsed and arranged. Not sticking to straight three-chord traditional progressions, YMSB punctuates and accentuates their music with a lot of excitement. The fun they have energizes their audiences.
While quite a few of their songs fit the standard 3-4 minute timeframe ideal for radio airplay, it's interesting to note that they also serve up eight songs that span anywhere from 6 to 10.5 minutes. Spread throughout their sets, these improvisational adventures take us on journeys that ebb and flow like an ocean's tide. In fact, four songs on disc 1 (their first set) progress effortlessly as a medley that spans over 26 minutes. The crowd is left in a wild frenzy. The encore is John Hartford's "Holding," introduced with the advice, "if you're holding, then don't hold out" and accentuated with Anger's pizzicato fiddle. Liner notes are remiss in not identifying who is singing on each song.
Since day one, YMSB has held that their fans, the Kinfolk, are the cornerstone to their success. "Mountain Tracks: Volume 3" is a testament to their ability to incite a crowd to riotous support of acoustic jamgrass music. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
listen carefully.......2004-12-26
Yonder rocks. This album is another of their well-captured live shows and is deffinitely good tunes. Go see them in concert.
Excellence.......2004-11-09
This CD did not disappoint. This band has matured so much since some of the earlier recordings. The individual instrumentation has improved, and the group has matured as a whole. The songs are more elaborate and you can discern their fantastic stage presence just by listening. I love the joke about whiskey when Adam says, "It's like a sweater you wear on the inside," and Jeff replies, "A drunk sweater!" If you like bluegrass, imporvisational music (jam bands) and just plain great musical prowess, listen to this CD.

Where so many duet projects seem like shotgun marriages, this one sounds like a labor of love, celebrating Southern music as a common denominator that transcends racial and categorical divides. Among the highlights, the pairing of Lyle Lovett and Al Green finds revelation within the funky groove of "Funny How Time Slips Away," while the album-closing "Patches"--with George Jones playing father to B.B. King's son--achieves a spine-tingling majesty. Though Natalie Cole and Reba McEntire misconnect on "Since I Fell for You," Sam Moore (of Sam & Dave) and the late Conway Twitty are at their soulful best on "Rainy Night in Georgia." --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
rainy night in Georgia..........2007-06-22
so I'm in Atlanta a few years back visiting old friends, it's a rainy night and we're kicking back. I see a video of Sam Moore/Conway Twitty singing a duet of RAINY NIGHT IN GEORGIA that touches my soul. The next day I run out and pick up this CD. It still is one of my favorite cds of all time. Rhythm and blues artists singing with county and western stars, sounds like one of those hit and miss concepts but this cd is all hits. Sadly, it was the last recording Conway Twitty ever made but what a pairing, the soulful Sam Moore and the gravel voiced Conway. Other favorites are WHEN SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH MY BABY, Patti LaBelle and Travis Tritt. THE WEIGHT, Staple Singers and Marty Stuart. AIN'T NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING, Vince Gill and Gladsy Knight. A smashing fun rendition of SOMETHIN ELSE, Little Richard and Tanya Tucker. Great music!

Rhythm+Country+Blues = AMERICAN Music!.......2007-06-04
It's all been said here, and quite well, too. But if you are - or know somebody - who was born in 1977 or later, tell them that this disc is a stone-MUST HAVE if one wishes to see how (what used to be known as) Rock and Roll originated. Oh...MY fave? Trisha/Aaron's "I Fall To Pieces." Patsy is smiling from above...
RHYTHM COUNTRY & BLUES.......2006-11-06
THIS CD IS VERY GOOD LISTENING FOR ALL AGES, FEATURING THE MUSIC & VOICES OF MANY KNOWN ARTISTS.
Wonderful!.......2006-07-25
A friend loaned me a copy of this CD last week and I've been frantically searching for the name of it ever since so that I could buy my own copy and one for my folks. I'm glad I finally located it.
I don't know how I missed this when it came out but I'm glad someone found it for me. I'll be recommending it to all of my musically inclined friends.
My favorite cut is Rainy Night in Georgia; it is pure pleasure to listen to my old favorite Sam Moore. I'd lost track of Conway after he deserted Rock and Roll for Country but this song reminds me why I loved him when he sang "Make Believe" so many years ago. Travis Tritt and Patti LaBelle were made for each other, as were Al Green and Lyle Lovett. Aaron Neville is always a pleasure and Tanya Tucker and Little Richard are pure fun. Mavis Staples is always great when she sings "The Weight" and this version with Marty Stuart is no exception. These are my favorites but there isn't a bad song on the CD.
This is a "must have" for anyone who loves all forms of music.

Title fraud.......2007-04-11
I was very dissappointed with this CD.
It is only the "songs of" - very few sung by Woody himself.
Not what I was seeking - a CD by Woody alone.
Buyers should check this CD out very carefully first, make sure the artists and songs are what you want.
Woody Guthrie's colleagues make a tribute album in 1972.......2005-08-11
There are two reasons why calling this album "The Greatest Songs of Woody Guthrie" rather than some variation on the greatest hits idea makes sense. First, Guthrie was out singing these songs before there ever were any Billboard charts to help defiine exactly what constituted a hit. Second, although this album starts with Guthrie himself singing "This Land Is Your Land," clearly his most famous and most popular song, the track shifts to the song being sung by the Weavers. Guthrie sings a few songs and few duets, but mostly his songs are sung by other artists. So what we have here is a tribute album, originally a double-album now on a single CD, that represents some of the best first and second generation folk singers who followed in the path blazed by America's troubadour.
The first generation would be those artists that actually got to play with Guthrie, which would be not only the Weavers with Pete Seeger (the artist who most closely followed in Guthrie's footsteps), but also Cisco Houston, Sonny Terry and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. The next generation is represented on the album by Odetta, Joan Baez, and Country Joe McDonald. Yes, there is an authenticity to hearing Guthrie sing his songs that nobody else can touch, but there is something to be said for other artists replacing his rawness with more of the inherent beauty of his songs (the same way Peter, Paul & Mary did for Bob Dylan). The track information above is incomplete, so here is who sings what on "The Greatest Songs of Woody Guthrie":
1. "This Land Is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie/The Weavers
2. "Do Re Mi" by Cisco Houston
3. "So Long, It's Been Good To Know Yuh" by The Weavers
4. "Pastures Of Plenty" by Odetta
5. "Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos)" by Cisco Houston
6. "900 Miles" by Cisco Houston
7. "Roll On Columbia" by Country Joe McDonald
8. "Hard, Ain't It Hard" by Woody Guthrie & Cisco Houston
9. "Dirty Overhalls" by Woody Guthrie
10. "Riding In My Car (Take Me)" by Woody Guthrie
11. "Ship In The Sky" by Cisco Houston
12. "The Sinking Of The Reuben James" by The Weavers
13. "Rambling Round Your City" by Odetta
14. "Jesus Christ" by Cisco Houston
15. "When The Curfew Blows" by Country Joe McDonald
16. "1913 Massacre" by Ramblin' Jack Elliott
17. "Talking Fishing Blues" by Ramblin' Jack Elliott
18. "Curly Headed Baby" by Cisco Houston
19. "Jackhammer John" by The Weavers
20. "The Great Historical Bum" by Odetta
21. "Pretty Boy Floyd" by Joan Baez
22. "Buffalo Skinners" by Jim Kweskin
23. "Hard Travelin'" by Woody Guthrie, Cisco Houston & Sonny Terry
My favorite track is Odetta's "Pastures of Plenty," simply because it best represents how far you can go with Guthrie's music from its folk roots and make it work. When you listen to Cisco Houston do "Do-Re-Mi" you are moving a notch up on the authenticity level, and with the Weavers singing "So Long (It's Been Good to Know You)" and "Jackhammer John" you get a real sense of how these songs were popularized. Of course, everytime you actually get to hear Guthrie sing on one of these tracks, such as the duet with Houston on "Hard, Ain't It Hard" you want to go listen to one of Guthrie's own albums, so those tracks tend to be a bit intrusive given the overall theme of the album.
Not everything will sit just right with you. The tempo of Country Joe McDonald's "Roll On Columbia" is just too slow for me, and I have to admit I was surprised that Joan Baez is not the one singing "Deportee," because her cover of that song is one of her better ones. But you look over the play list and it becomes clear that the old vanguard is not letting the new kids have many bites of the apple here (strange to think that in 1972 when this album first came out that Baez would be restricted to the second tier on an album like this). But whatever faults you might find with some of the tracks, the overall idea and execution and exactly what you would want to find on an album like this. There are several solid Woody Guthrie tribute albums, and this would have to be considered one of them.
The best stuff is a 6, but some drag it down.......2002-10-08
Great material in some definitive versions, but a few weaker ones as well. I have never found Joan Baez's voice appealing; maybe I can't get past her politics, but that warbling vibrato gets on my nerves. And though one wouldn't want to over-represent Cisco, his Pretty Boy Floyd is among my favorites of all his recordings. Ramblin' Jack can also ramble elsewhere as far as I'm concerned.
But the passion and commitment and fire, back when folk musicians really did think they could change the world for the better, shines through. Inspired musicianship and great material; very, very, very good stuff. A great intro, not just to Woody but to a few other forgotten talents. Go check them, expecially Cisco Houston, for the most authentic voice of America you'll hear.
Possibly the best Woody tribute album made so far..........2002-09-27
This has a nice variety of Woody's material and a nice collection of performers, some who were friends of his, not just admirers. I have grown over the decades to prefer Woody's own singing, or interpretations by Cisco Houston and Ramblin' Jack Elliot...whole albums worth. But especially for a beginner in the lore and legend of Guthrie, this is a great starter set.
OUTSTANDING for Guthrie fans and the as-yet unconverted.......2000-07-30
I bought this album for the Woody Guthrie content, I'm a big, big fan of Woody's life and works. Some of the other artists' versions of his tunes, especially Odetta's, damn near moved me to tears. This is an absolutely beautiful collection. There's nothing as moving as Odetta singing "Sometimes fruit gets rotten and falls down to the ground... there's a hungry mouth for every peach as I go ramblin' round." You just know she felt it with her heart.

Product Description
On this compelling new 11-track album recorded in the band's hometown, The Rebirth matches its musical vitality with a gift for lucid poetry and songwriting, creating a rich sound built on an organic blend of new and traditional soul, hip-hop, jazz, and funk. These elements make the group's music both highly progressive and a throwback to the classic soul bands like: Earth, Wind & Fire, Ramp, Pleasure, Rotary Connection, Side Effect and Roy Ayers. Over the last few years, The Rebirth has celebrated the successes of several smashing singles: "This Journey In," "Every Body Say Yeah," "Got Your Madness," and their critically acclaimed cover of The Might Ryders' "Evil Vibrations." The release of "This Journey In" quickly garnered airplay on radio stations from Los Angeles to the U.K. and Japan, and appeared on numerous CD's including: King Britt's Black to the Future, Gilles Peterson's Trust the DJ 9 and the Norman Jay MBE compilation entitled Giant 45. In addition, Gilles Peterson included the song on his list of "20 Best in 2003" and Norman Jay called it, "The anthem of the summer 2003." Poignant tracks that appear on This Journey In include "Shake It," a catchy mid-tempo jam that encourages one to feel uninhibited about getting out to the dance floor to simply let loose and enjoy the moment; the smooth dance song, with a funky base line, "Stray Away"; "Common Ends," an uplifting track that talks about the experiences in life that unifies people; and the funky, disco-Brazilianinspired song, "Talking Me Down," plus many other stellar compositions. The most recent release, "Evil Vibrations," was recorded exclusively for Ubiquity Records to appear on its innovative compilation, Rewind! 4. The result was a high-energy, textured sound in the original retro style that included some new lyrics, mixed with De La Soul's version of the classic track. Nominated for "Song of the Year" at Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards and concluding in 2004 at #6 on his playlist, "Evil Vibrations," continues to gain accolades for the group as one of the US' most promising neo-soul collectives. "A fabulous CD and a contender for album of the year!!" - Blues & Soul (London) "Evil Vibrations" & "This Journey In" named Gilles Peterson's Top 5 All Winners List 2003 & 2004 "The Rebirth explores the space between soul, ambient and jazz with refined musicianship to spare. Tight music. Period." - The Urban Network "...a storm of jazzy live action out of LA....solid R&B tinged tracks that remind us of the good old days of The Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai's first albums and the original Giant Step parties...lots of thick, layered vocals mixed with inner city heat." - URB Magazine

Positive Charge.......2007-05-23
Im a "Cog" head (Incognito fan) and The Rebirth give that same vibe. I had the same experience as another reviewer had where I played this durring a small gathering and everyone was like "WHO IS THIS? I GOT TO HAVE IT". I love when I score with some new music that my friends havent heard yet and it knocks them out!!! I'm such a big kid. Thanks Rebirth, my friends and I are waiting for your next one.
Enjoyable.......2007-05-14
The Journey was pleasurable however longwinded. Don't get me wrong the
songs are good but I think the CD was too long. Most times CD's are short with only 12 tracks which is typical but when it is good you don't want it to stop. THis Journey was good songs but somewhat redundant towards the end. When you relay a message you have to let it stand and move on. I think some of the messages were repeated, it may be that they really wanted the people to understand their position (stance0 in the music world. But definately a nice collection of music especially for the neo-jazz inspired listeners.
Beautiful!.......2007-01-30
This is a beautiful project and should hold a place in anyones collection. I placed this on during a dinner party, and in a short time everyone was "Wow! Who's this?" and groovin' to it. It's Great! GET IT!
SOUL GROUP FOR THE FUTURE.......2007-01-26
THE KAJMERE COMPILATION WHICH FEATURED THIS GROUP, WON ME OVER, HAD TO OWN THEIR CD , IT IS EXCELLENT RETRO SOUL, THROWBACK TO THE DAYS OF EWF,DONALD BYRD, HERBIE HANCOCK, THEY ALSO INCORPORATE MODERN GROOVES FOR THE NU-SOUL CROWD. OVERALL GOOD CD.
My kind of music!.......2006-12-23
My best friend, who's a singer and has a very sound knowledge of what kind of music I like, introduced me to this band. I only had to listen to the first few bars of the opener, "This Journey In" to know that I needed to have this CD. I immediately ordered two copies - one for me and one for him.
This seven-piece band with Noelle Scaggs and Carlos "Loslito" Guaico doing most of the lead vocals give us funky, jazzy modern soul at it's very best with a distinct retro vibe. If you're a fan of early Incognito or early Brand New Heavies, you'll like these guys. I really don't know what else to say. This album reflects everything I love about music - Jazz-inspired, and led by beautifully played electric piano; pleasant vocals and positive lyrics - and it's shot right to the top of my best buys for this year, (excluding jazz) even above albums from the likes of the Brand New Heavies and Frank McComb. I haven't stopped playing it since it arrived earlier today. I also haven't felt like dancing in a long while, due to this, that and the other but I tell you, with this on the player, I've been finding it very hard to stay still. I put this CD on and it just takes me away. It's almost as if the CD has lifted my spirits. From beginning to end, this is my kind of music!
Why we don't see more bands like this on so-called music television channels, I'll never know but this is one band I'll be looking out for with a keen eye from now on. This is also another band I cannot wait to see perform live. One (wo)man's meat can often be another's poison but I'll be shocked if anyone reviews this album with anything less than the five stars they deserve.
Heck, just like an earlier reviewer, I'd give them ten stars if I could.

Perhaps his best!!!.......2007-03-29
This is a perfect Sunday morning , shake the cobwebs out of your head kind of album. A quiet album, featuring just Tony and his brother Wyatt on acoustic guitars, it evokes the warth of the sun peeking through the window on a gorgeous morning. Tony was in fine vocal form here, exhibiting the rich voice that sadly , he has been robbed of in the years since. I believe there is not a better Tony Rice album available. It does not necessarily demonstrate the ultimate in his pyrotechnic capability on the guitar , but it doesn't need to. Tony Rice sneezes off riffs that other guitarists work their entire lives to attain. This album sports great song selection, sympathetic accompaniment, and is just an easy listen ( without being "easy listening".)I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves the sound of rich full acoustic guitar, fine tunes, and one the most wonderfully resonant voices anyone has been gifted with.
Great Music From the Best Flat-Picker Around.......2003-03-05
At this writing, this recording is twenty years old, yet it sounds as fresh and new as any recording available. There are, I think, two reasons for this. One is that the tunes themselves, from folk standards such as The Last Thing On My Mind to early country classics like Any Old Time to fiddle tunes such as Cattle In the Cane, are good music. The more important reason, though, is that Tony uses his astonishing technique not to show itself off, but, rather, to play the tunes the way he thinks they should be played. When I listen to this CD, I don't think, "Man, can he play the guitar"; I think, "What great music!" Virtuosity abounds, but Tony understands that virtuosity doesn't have to mean playing faster and more intricately than anybody else, even though you can.
It's just Tony on most of these tracks. His younger brother Wyatt joins him on three tracks. Come listen to what one or two great musicians can do.
absolutely beautiful!.......2000-12-16
Style-wise, this sounds a bit like a cross between James Taylor and John Denver. Beautiful vocals and immaculate acoustic guitar. This is a real winner.
Very Good.......2000-08-04
I have no problem listening to this album straight through. From Blake to Dylan to Lightfoot there are no draggers...only excellent selections. Fun guitar picking! Pop this in your player, sit back, and relax. No disappointments.
Great!!.......1999-01-10
another great tony rice cd. he's more than bluegrass, and nobody can play like he can. very enjoyable listening.

Big John.......2007-03-13
John Hammond was my first experience with white man's blues from his very first Vanguard albums. I followed his career closely for many years until he seemed to lose his way in the mid-70's. I think the high water mark of his career was the three albums he did for Atlantic in the late 60's and "Southern Fried" is the top of the pile. Great singing, great songs, great, great band of Muscle Shoals regulars (plus Duane Allman) and a vibe he hasn't been able to achieve since. I have all his early to mid-period stuff on CD and vinyl, many twice or thrice over, and reckon he's one of the best white bluesmen. There must be some enterprising record label out there than can gather together all John's Atlantic material (plus unreleased stuff) and put together a proper collectors retrospective CD. Then get a proper and sympathetic box set of his Vanguard material (the current re-releases of this material is a dog's breakfast) and finally pull together a double CD of the best of his Columbia, Capricorn, Rounder and other minor label material. Then we may be doing justice to this excellent bluesman who has done as much for the "originals" as any white boy could. With the current interest in him at an all-time high, there must be a market for his earlier, more traditional blues material. As a footnote, I think the cover of the original vinyl "Southern Fried" album (not the one shown here) is one of the top 20 album covers of all-time; snake-skin suit, Gold-Top Gibson guitar, F**k me pose and all the strut and bluster of a man at the top of his game.
A personal favorite of mine for 30 years.......2003-02-21
Something special occurred when John Hammond's powerful vocals, guitar, and harmonica were paired with the legendary Muscle Shoals "Swampers" -- studio musicians who had a magical ability to infuse all their recording projects with a terrific combination of soulful RnB and country-flavored blues feeling. For me, they are just as responsible as Hammond for why this album turned out so well. The added presence of their frequent guest collaborator, Duane Allman, on lead and bottleneck slide guitar for several tracks doesn't hurt either. If this album were to be recorded today, the production and sound quality would undoubtedly be fuller, but the feel of the players could not be bettered. (I've always thought of this album as a sort of a companion piece to Boz Scaggs's excellent self-titled 1969 solo album on Atlantic, recorded in the same studio with all the same people.) A solid rhythm section, tasteful supporting keyboard and guitar work, and judicious use of a potent horn section all yield marvelous results -- plus Hammond's vocals and harmonica work here are knockouts. The raw passion and energy of his performance offset the other musicians' more polished and relaxed approach so that things don't sound too smooth and laid-back. I should mention that this CD reissue is nicely packaged and sounds really good, but there are no added liner notes or bonus tracks -- and the listing of tracks and credits is marred by some embarrassingly stupid typos (like crediting the song "Nadine" to "Chuckr" Berry, and dropping the second "y" in the title of "Mystery Train"). Of course, what's important is the music, and it's great. I thought so when I first heard this album in the early 1970s, and time has not changed my opinion.
Deep Fried, Hot 'N Spicy Southern Boogie.......2002-12-03
At long last the CD debut of this sizzling hot John Hammond/Muscle Shoals Studio masterpiece. Hammond cranks it out, as he's accompanied by the deft rhythm section of Barry Beckett; keyboards, Eddie Hinton; guitar, David Hood; bass and Roger Hawkins; drums. In addition he is joined on four tracks by slide guitar virtuoso, the legendary Duane Allman. Those familiar with the Duane Allman anthologies (volumes 1 & 2) can attest to the sonic wail of Duane and John trading licks on Shake For Me and Cryin' For My Baby.
Southern Fried stands along side other Muscle Shoals great R&B classics like Johnny Jenkins Ton Ton Machutte and Boz Scaggs self titled Atlantic Records album with Duane Allman on slide guitar and doboro. Just check out the writting credits on this puppy...Willie Dixon, Chester Burnett (aka Howlin Wolf), Chuck Willis, Chuck Berry and McKinley Morganfield (shame on you if you didn't recognize Muddy Waters real name). So fly out the door or submit your order today to the folks at Amazon.com(just a wee little plug for the good guys). Either way treat yourself to some real down home, deep fried, hot 'n spicy southern R&B. No doubt you'll be flaying away on your air guitar as Johnny and Duane take you for a soulful shakedown.

Album Description
This album features powerful performances by legends Lead Belly, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Brownie McGhee, Mike Seeger, Pop Stoneman, Cisco Houston, and Rosalie Sorrels, among others. Elsewhere, National Heritage Fellowship Award winners Elizabeth Cotten and Doc Watson, who has won six Grammy Awards to date, are represented. Of the 29 tracks on the album, a full 21 appear on CD for the first time, all newly remastered by Grammy winner Pete Reiniger.
Bookended by actual recordings of trains from the 1950s, the compilation evidences the continuing influence of these essential American ballads, work songs, blues and broadsides. "Midnight Special," represented here by Lead Belly, has been covered by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Paul McCartney, and Van Morrison. Alt-country band the Old 97s named itself after "The Wreck of the Old 97," which has been interpreted by Johnny Cash and John Mellencamp, among many others. The compilation also includes iconic American songs "Rock Island Line," "John Henry," "Wabash Cannonball," and "Railroad Bill," all presented here in riveting performances. Bluesman Furry Lewis, who sings about the legend of "Kassie Jones," actually lost a leg to a railroad accident in 1917.
Grammy winner Jeff Place compiled and annotated Classic Railroad Songs from Smithsonian Folkways, which also contains rare photographs from the Library of Congress.
Classic Railroad Songs from Smithsonian Folkways is the ninth entry in the label's Classic Series and serves as a doorway into Folkways' incredible catalog of recordings. The Classic Series, which has covered blues, bluegrass, folk, and mountain music, among other genres, also illustrates the role Moses Asch and his Folkways label played in preserving a vital piece of American history. December 6, 2005 marks the 100th anniversary of this American documentarian's birth.
Customer Reviews:
Too much revivalist material.......2007-06-25
There are a lot of good songs on here but I was disappointed that so much of the album is made up of Folk Revival era covers rather than "roots" versions. I cannot imagine that there weren't enough Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, and older songs about trains for them to fill this out without resorting to pop-type groups like the New Lost City Ramblers.
There are other CD's in this series, though, that are very good.
Pretty good but.........2007-03-29
Frankly, I was disappointed in the version of "The Wreck of the Old 97." It's an interesting cut, live with a call and response from the audience, but the recording doesn't pick up the crowd very well. Essentially, you get half the song. Other than that quibble, a pretty good CD.

Album Description
Earliest, rarest ...and never reissued recordings by the all-time king of Outlaw country! Cross-label compilation, 5 previously un-issued recordings. The foundation of modern country music! Influenced George Jones, and led directly and indirectly to outlaw country. This is hardcore country at its hardest! For those whose tastes run to hardcore honky-tonk and stone country of the late '50s and early '60s, this is as good as it gets. Don't miss this long overdue retrospective on the early years of one of country music's true stylists.
Customer Reviews:
You Have to Own this one.......2007-02-27
If you like true traditional honky-tonk, this is one album you cannot pass up. This Bear Family release covers the very first recordings of the great Donny Young (Johnny Paycheck). While the folks at Little Darlin records have released some of his first "Paycheck" stuff, it cannot compare to the sound quality of this Bear Family Release.....it really is that good. Here are 29 songs on 1 CD commencing in 1958. There are quite a few cover songs, but they are entirely Johnny Paycheck; he has the ability to make each one his own. It is amazing to hear the influences of not only the great George Jones and Faron Young (who are both covered here), but also the Wilburn Bros, and the Louvins! I mistakenly believed that there would be a lot of filler material here, but I was wrong; this CD has no dead-space....it is as good when it ends as it is when it starts. Like all Bear Family Records, this one carries a fine set of Liner notes, and the sound is superb. A+
