These all-stars from now-defunct indie Okra Records aren't household names. On loan from their regular teams, Ricky Barnes (of the Hoot Owls) and Hank McCoy (a Dead Ringer) plus roots-rockers Dave Schramm (of the Schramms) and Jeb Loy Nichols (former Fellow Traveler, now a solo act) field a formidable, memorable country band. Alternating between sleek two-steppers and hootenanny country rockers, the nine originals here are all accomplished, although Nichols's "Blue Sides to Every Story"--such a dead-on country & western weeper that it could've been written 30 years ago--particularly stands out. But it's the six steel-guitar-backed covers that really shine, highlighting gems from Buck to the Louvins and climaxing with a "Purple Rain" so twangy it'll make you swear Prince should really be remembered as the Artist Formerly Known as Hank. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars Okra All Amazing.......2001-04-18

I first picked this up on a trip to Europe in 1994. It had fascinated me at the time that Germany would be hip to the American "alt-country" and "neo-folk" movement while the typical American music fan still had to wait another three years for it to happen. Today (in 2001), there are many out there who try like hell to capture the realism and sweetness this record always had. It's time it was given its due! The music is as authentic and insightful as any classic country song ever was. If you don't believe me, you only need to check out Hank McCoy's "New Orleans". What a stunner!

5 out of 5 stars When better music is made, the OKRA all-stars will make it.......1999-08-09

If you think music should be unpretentious, heart-felt and sometimes (gasp!) maybe even a little fun, this record will thrill you. It rocks like Hank and twangs like Buck, without the glitz of Dwight or the schmaltz of the New Country crowd (what was wrong with the Old Country anyways?) So get it and play it and learn to forgive yourself for enjoying it. I did.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite CD of 1999.......1999-02-21

I know it's early in the year, but I am going to go on record and say that the Okra All-Stars CD is my favorite of 1999! This is one cool and fun CD. From the great country version of Prince's "Purple Rain" to the cover of Buck Owen's "I Wouldn't Live in New York City" to the band's own great originals, this is one wonderful CD. It's the one I take with me to every party I go to. And it NEVER fails to get positive comments. I heartily recommend the Okra All-Stars!!
