This 1963 release is not a greatest-hits package, as the subtitle would have you believe, although the title cut did top the country charts. Instead, it offers a worthy sampling of Cash's far-ranging moods--dramatic saga songs, gospel hymns, love songs, honky-tonk weepers, folk ballads. The steady Tennessee Two churn forms the musical foundation, but is at times embellished by everything from banjo to mariachi horns to string section to background chorus to the Carter Family. Cash's august vocal tone and torpid phrasing command attention regardless of song or surroundings. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
New Johnny Cash Fan.......2007-02-22
I bought this album because I loved the movie "Walk the Line". Except for the first song, "Hey Porter", which was one of his earliest, and "A Boy Named Sue", this is my new favortie album. His deep, soulful voice tells you that his heart is in everything he sings. He wrote most of the songs himself, but even with the ones he didn't you can tell that he understood completely what the composer was trying to say, (i.e."Ring of Fire" and "Sunday Morning Coming Down"). The instrumentation is brilliant (i.e. the Mexican horns in "Ring of Fire"). Johnny Cash was REAL. Had I paid attention many years ago I would have been a fan of his all along. This is Country and Western Soul.
Better than ever.......2006-03-19
I originally purchased this as an LP in the early 60's. To finally re-obtain it as a CD is wonderful. The quality is superior to the original in every way, and the songs themselves are timeless. Having seen Mr. Cash many times in person during the 60's, he's one of the few country/rock pioneers who's songs retained that original essence that modern country lacks through to the end of his life. The influence of the Carter Family is very present in many of the songs, and their background vocals, especially June's, can still bring a lump to your throat and a tear to your eye. My personal favorite on the album is Tennessee Flat-top Box. As a young guitarist, it was one of the first country pieces I learned. If you like old style country with bits of original rock-a-billy mixed in, you'll like this album
ANY Johnny Cash is at LEAST 5 stars.......2005-08-21
It is SO good to hear these beautiful songs. My favorite is FORTY SHADES OF GREEN. You can just picture yourself in Ireland. I do want to clarify something regarding an earlier post though...I agree that Johnny should have done more Irish songs because they would have been brilliant but to refer to this as an Irish song is not entirely correct. It is a song ABOUT Ireland. Johnny Cash WROTE the song. However, now it has pretty much become synonymous with Ireland and I think that is wonderful. His body of work can't be held to one country! I also love TENNESSEE FLAT TOP BOX (his daughter's version was just as good...love them both.)
This is not the BEST compilation but as I said above, any Johnny is GREAT.
Love is a burning thing........2005-08-03
This is not a Johnny Cash "Greatest Hits" album. Rather, it's a collection of singles (a-sides and b-sides), that had not already been on an album. So, some big hits like "Don't Take Your Guns to Town" were not included, because they had already been on an album. But, it is still a solid collection of songs. Johnny Cash's fans should enjoy it.
Great collection of songs from the early 1960s.......2004-12-01
This is a great collection of 12 songs from the early 1960s, and there isn't a weak track on the album. The songs run the gamut from gospel to Irish ballads to TV themes ("The Rebel - Johnny Yuma" and "Bonanza") all in the unique Cash style. I never tire of listening to this one.

Customer Reviews:
My first Johnny Cash CD.......2006-07-15
Even though I grew up in Johnny Cash's era, I never listened much to country music. I became interested in his music after the movie 'Walk the Line' came out. I listened to samples of many of Johnny Cash's CDs on Amazon before selecting this one. It's now one of my favorites. The selection of songs is good, as is the quality of the recording.
You mean this album's been out two years with no reviews?.......2002-04-16
Back before country music became dumbed-down, there was a very eclectic mix of musical styles which melded to form what was known as "bad [boy] outlaw country blues," of which Johnny Cash was the exemplar. "I Walk the Line" is an appropriate intro to the man who carefully crafted his "man in black" identity. That identity always brought together the two seemingly opposite sides of Cash's personality: The "Folsom Prison" outlaw (Cash let the legend build around himself he was an ex-con) and the gospel-singing, deeply-religious man. No matter, Cash's intelligent, complex tunes are a slap in the face at the kind of facile "I'm just a simple [country person], and proud of it, hyuck, hyuck, hyuck" [stuff] that the media puts out today...
Today's aspiring country stars would do well to listen to Cash, who deftly mixes Nashville country, gospel and blues. His "Two Timin' Woman" is a heartbreaker, time and again.

Customer Reviews:
What Is Truth?.......2007-02-16
Answer to the above question: Johnny was the truth. I have the tune on vinyl but it's not easy to find it on CD. This is missing some of what I consider to be essential Cash tunes like Get Rhythm, I Still Miss Someone, Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down and Folsum Prison Blues. But it more than makes up for those omissions by having Understand Your Man, The One on the Right, What Is Truth and I Got Stripes. It's just impossible to compile the Man onto one disc unless it's an MP3. None of the American Recordings tunes are on this either but you can find a good compilation of the Rubin era on Unearthed.

Almost the best of Johnny Cash.......2006-11-14
This is a must-have CD for Johnny Cash fans--there are a few of his best not on the album, though, but otherwise very good!
Too short and fairly low quality.......2006-08-03
This compilation does contain his most essential hits, but it has only eleven songs. Also, these have not been digitally remastered and the sound quality is inferior to other releases, so your money would be much better spent on one of the more recent anthologies or retrospectives. However, in addition to original recordings of the classic Cash songs, "Ballad of a Teenage Queen," "Guess Things Happen That Way," "The Ways of A Woman in Love" and "Get Rhythm" all make for good complementary tracks. No liner notes or any information apart from the track listing, no photos other than the one on the cover, just a shoddy release. I cannot recommend this CD unless you are able to pick it up for really cheap.
Boy Named *&%#@$!.......2004-04-15
I got the CD with high hopes and for the most part, I love it! However, on the song, "Boy Named Sue" censors bleep out a supposed cuss word, which instantly killed it for me.
Cash with all of his greatest hits a gold record........1998-06-16
Cash at his best with such songs as "I Walk the Line", and "Ring of Fire". Cash's greatest hits is a best buy. This C.D. has all of your favorite Cash songs!
J. Cash is the Man!!!.......1998-06-13
Rock fans and country fans should own this classic. Johnny Cash is one of the biggest influences of rock and country of all time. If you are a serious cd collector this is a must. For ten bucks you get some of Cash's best work.

Customer Reviews:
Great Record.......2006-01-14
This album should be in every Cash fan's collection. Although Johnny's earlier recordings are more famous, the Mercury recordings have a tempo and an energy that the earlier recordings lack.
This is the best sounding Johnny Cash.......2006-01-04
I have several other CD's by Johnny that have been remastered and none of them sound even half as good as this one.
Several of these songs are not the "HIT" songs, but several of these are better than many of the hit songs...
The first 9 songs are awesome as is the clear version of "Wanted Man" at the end...
I am not sold on his version of "Cat's In The Cradle", but I am glad to hear his version. And "Home of the Blues" is just OK.
"Folsom Prison Blues" and "Wanted Man" never sounded better...and "I Still Miss Someone" isn't one of my favorites, but I actually like this version.
Per the liner notes "Get Rhythm", "I Walk The Line", "Folsom Prison Blues", "Cry, Cry, Cry", "Home of the Blues", "Tennesse Flat Top Box", and "Wanted Man" are all Mercury Recordings, not the original Sun or Columbia versions. This probably explains why it doesn't sound like they were mastered by Thomas Edison and the RCA dog Nipper...recording technology had advanced light years from the fifties to the eighties...and in his fifties Johnny's voice and playing were still fine!
While "At San Quentin" is still my favorite...this is the clearest, best sounding of the Johnny collections.
you can do better than this..........2005-02-10
If you want a low-priced sampler of Johnny Cash, you might want to find one made by Sony. This here is an ill-considered cash-in by Universal, featuring re-recordings made in the 80's. For under ten dollars, there are a number of better discs available from Sony - _16 Biggest Hits_, _Greatest Hits Vol. 1_, _Super Hits_, _Giant Hits_, etc. These are preferable because, for the most part, they feature the original recordings.
A good quality assortment.......2005-01-16
This CD is not for the weekened Cash fan. Those who want 'Ring of Fire'and 'Boy Named Sue' can buy greatest hits CD's. The songs selected on this CD are more of Cash's cornerstone recordings expressing his true voice in music. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy songs like 'Ring of Fire' but the selections on the Masters collection are for the ones who want to experience the real Cash.
Previous Reviews Here Are Hogwash........2004-02-24
The bottom line on this disc is that it contains really strong tracks that Johnny Cash fans will love. The songs (remakes included) are the well-written, well-executed and - here - nicely mastered. Do we NEED Ring Of Fire on another disk? It's fine that it isn't here. And as for the American Recordings, those won't show up on Greatest Hits collections for a while, so no one should be shocked that they aren't here. Is that to say that there aren't omissions? No. I'd have loved a newly recorded version of Boy Named Sue as well. What is really great about this disk is the crisp and clean sound of the newer versions of those early tunes. Every time I play this disk's version of Folsom Prison Blues, I just dig the fact that it doesn't sound like it's being played on a tape recorder through a sock in bowl of punch, under a table in a carpet factory. There will ALWAYS be Johnny Cash compilations getting released. With all the material out there, expect a good number of them to SOUND bad. Good tunes, bad sound quality. Just be judicious and buy the ones you WANT, because lord knows they won't ALL be necessary. That said, this one presents SOME of Johnny Cash's greatest hits with production that is fantastic. Read the track listing and, if this is a set you know you'd enjoy, buy it with confidence.

Totally Fun CD!.......2007-02-06
I Love Peter Reckell's CD! I originally bought it because I'm a huge "Days" fan. As I listened to it for the first time, I noticed how really cool the songs are. Peter's wife Kelly Moneymaker wrote the songs which include some pop, rock, a few ballads, and even a little country! I continue to listen to it because it's actually really good!
Bo Brady.......2007-01-10
Love it! All the songs from Days of Our lives! it was a gift to my daughter...a huge fan....
Bo is the greatest since Elvis Presley.......2004-01-03
Not only is Peter (Bo) Reckell an award winning actor, he should be a grammy winning songster. I was deeply moved by his range, pitch and tempo. I dropped a tear when I heard him sing for the first time. I will be waiting for his next masterpiece with baited breath. Oh, Peter, Bravo!!!
Peter, don't quit your day job........2003-07-19
As a fan of Peter on Days of Our Lives and a fan of his famous wife Kelly Moneymaker (former member of Expose', now with her own solo career), I thought I would check out this CD. This was one of those albums you just keep hoping will get better, but song after song the dull and dreariness is painful. Peter does a great job in his character on Days, but he doesn't have a gift for singing. His voice just doesn't have the strength of a professional. Several of the songs sound just plain out of tune. Sorry Peter, I really hoped to give this one a better rating. ~Kay Lee

Hidden Treasure.......2001-05-20
This little known cd is very generous with its twenty songs that are truly Johnny Cash's greatest hits. One may find some of the songs on one greatest hits cd and some on another cd, but this is the first time they are all together. It contains more than all of the hits one would expect to find along with some lesser known songs, so pop this cd into your cd player and learn them all. And as an added bonus, there is a biography of Mr. Cash in the cover.

Caveat Emptor.......2006-08-22
Buyer beware
This may a great CD. However, the CD you'll receive will probably differ from the one depicted here in the track listing.
The cover and title are identical. But I still haven't (as of August 21, 2006) found the CD listed here (with Folsom Prison Blues as the first track). Instead, I have received (on two occasions) received a different CD with "Hey Porter" as the first track
An excellent compilation despite an obvious omission.......2004-09-18
No Johnny Cash compilation can ever include everything but this collection contains all the essentials from the fifties and sixties, his most productive period that yielded classic songs such as Hey porter, I walk the line, Big river, Don't take your guns to town, Five feet high and rising, I still miss someone, Ring of fire, Understand your man, It ain't me babe (with June Carter Cash), Orange blossom special, Jackson (with June Carter Cash) and A boy named Sue. All these songs and many others are included here.
The fifties and sixties take up the whole of the first CD and almost half of the second CD so, inevitably, there isn't a lot of room for his later music. Even so, the omission of A thing called love (a top five pop hit in Britain and also a big hit in America) will surprise some people. Of the seventies songs included here, the best is One piece at a time, an amusing song about assembling a car from stolen car parts.
Another feature of this compilation is the number of guests including Bob Dylan (Girl from the north country), Marty Robbins (Song of the patriot), Waylon Jennings (The night Hank Williams came to town) and U2 (The wanderer). On Highwaymen, Johnny is joined by Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson, who recorded three albums together as the Highwaymen. This name was originally used by a sixties folk group (famous for Michael row the boat ashore) and sometimes causes confusion.
This compilation is based on another double CD (Essential) with four tracks added - So doggone lonesome, Daddy sang bass, Forty shades of green and Man in white.
Despite the omission of A thing called love, this is an excellent collection of Johnny's music.
