Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This swaggering, tough-singing Kentucky duo consists of a pair of impassioned but unremarkable singers--Eddie Montgomery (brother of country star John Michael Montgomery) and his longtime musical associate Troy Gentry. They deliver a rowdy, whiskey-drenched, antiheroic brand of rocked-up honky-tonk that unabashedly conjures up memories of Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams Jr., and other rough-and-rowdy country "outlaws" of yesteryear. Montgomery and Gentry wear these influences well on serviceable cuts like "Hillbilly Shoes" and "Didn't Your Mama Tell Ya," but do them a disservice on unremarkable ballads like "Trying to Survive" and "If a Broken Heart Could Kill," and on their derivative-sounding cover of Charlie Daniels's "All Night Long." The utter lack of original material on their debut CD is somewhat suspect, yet on killer cuts like the painfully confessional "Self Made Man" and the morally insightful "Daddy Won't Sell The Farm" they do show a few sparks of innovation amid all the ragged honky-tonk smoke and fire. --Bob Allen

This was a gift for my boyfriend who is such a big Montgomery Gentry fan. He absolutely loved the CD and plays it so often I think I'll be getting another one soon! Very satisfied customer! Thanks!

Look at me ....I'm a tough guy ....just ask that dead tame bear over there. Gentry is so phoney he could be in the Bush administration. Let's make him co-Sec. of Defense! Rumsfeld-Gentry! Yeah, we'd limit our targets to unarmed people but the numbers would be great!

Country Singer Charged With Killing A Tame Bear
(WCCO) Minneapolis Country singer Troy Lee Gentry was indicted Tuesday in federal court on a charge of illegally killing and tagging a tamed black bear.
Gentry, of Franklin, Tenn., and Lee Marvin Greenly, a 46-year-old wildlife photographer from Sandstone, Minn., appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Raymond Erickson in Duluth, Minn. Tuesday morning. Their case being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael A. Dees.
According to the indictment, Greenly sold Gentry a tame, trophy-caliber black bear named "Cubby" for approximately $4,650 in October of 2004. Greenly housed several animals for use in his photography business.
After the transaction, the indictment reports that Greenly and Gentry tagged the bear with a Minnesota hunting license. Gentry then allegedly killed the captive bear with a bow and arrow while the animal was still enclosed in a pen on Greenly's property.
The indictment further alleges that Greenly and Gentry registered the bear with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources as though it had been hunted in the wild before shipping the animal's hide to a taxidermist in Kentucky for mounting.
According to the Lacey Act, it is illegal to falsely tag a tame bear for the purpose of hunting.
The bear's death was videotaped and allegedly edited after the fact to make it appear that Cubby had been killed in a "fair chase" situation.
Greenly is also facing two further charges of violations against the Lacey Act, including guiding hunters to the Sandstone National Wildlife Refuge, where black bear hunting is illegal, and unlawfully setting up bear-baiting stations in the area.
Both Gentry and Greenly have been released on bond pending their next court appearance. If convicted on the charges, they could both face a maximum potential penalty of five years in federal prison and a $20,000 fine.
Been a MG fan for 2 years.......2006-03-22
I became a MG fan when I heard them (on TV) perform at the Fanfare in Nashivlle. I heard 'Hell Yeah' quite a while before that and I loved that; and If you ever stop loving me. I didn't know who MG where then- then I heard their performance at fanfare (On the TV) and had to become a fan. I got all their albums.
This is their debut CD, and it is really good. Their first single; "Hilbilly Shoes" is about not judgeing people- sends a powerful message and it can still be rocked out.
And "Lonley and Gone" is a great song and they can sing it with such emotion.. not to mention the vid for it!! Wow.
The whole album is good- and their version of "All Night Long" rocks
There are just so many things to say about each song.
"Daddy wont sell the farm" MAN! That song is great- the music singing melody and all. And it is about not being able to take a country boy out of thier setting, no matter what.
The whole album is great- and If i heard this album when it debuted in 1999 I would have said, "These guys will be around for a long time to come"
A great debut!.......2005-06-08
This is the cd that started everything for Eddie Montgomery and Troy (T-Roy) Gentry. This is what they offered, and they did a great job with it.
All of the songs on this album are great to listen to. It makes no difference where you are, home, work or on the road, you can listen to them anywhere. The songs are well written, and each song has a message, it has something you can relate to. "Trying to Survive" and "Lonely and Gone" are songs about trying to cope when relationships break up. Many who hate Country argue that's what all Country songs are about. No, they are not, but then again, EVERYONE knows someone going through this kind of heartache. "Trouble Is" sings of regret of letting a marriage slip away, while "Didn't Your Mama Tell Ya" reminds us there are still guys who do love their women and simply don't disrespect them, but rather love them completely. Other songs are a lot of fun, such as "I've Loved a lot More Then I've Hurt," where he's endured alot of bad things, but he still enjoys life, and "Daddy Won't Sell the Farm," about a farmer who won't sell out for ANYTHING, and neither will his son. Probably the most emotional song is the title track, "Tatoos and Scars," a song about a kid who thinks he's seen it all with his tatoos, but an older man shows his much harder-lived life with his scars.
This album was their finest moment. They told the world they were tough and proved it with their music. Their next one would be good, but unfortunately it was downhill after that. At one time, Montgomery Gentry made solid Country. Maybe one day the will do it again.

Memphis-based singer-songwriter Ellis's fifth album abounds with compelling stories and imaginative sounds, often woven around spiritual themes. In the title track, Ellis--who is bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe's godson--sings about acquiring life's scars over a rhumba arranged for guitar, accordion, and washboard. But the surprises begin with "When Leadbelly Walked the River like Christ," a textural solo recital with Ellis blending his Gary Davis-inspired picking and the violin-like sound of an e-bow on his acoustic guitar. And "The Missing Moon and Stars," a instrumental duet for guitar and dolceola (a kind of piano-zither hybrid), has a stately melody and ringing tones that evoke classical guitar compositions. Ellis's fusions sound utterly organic, but he's never too far from his blues bedrock. The drumbeat of the rocking spiritual "Search My Heart" borrows the rhythm of North Mississippi fife and drum bands, and "Dust Will Write My Name" is a gentle acoustic blues about finding one's Heavenly reward. --Ted Drozdowski
Album Description
William Lee Ellis sings of the Apocalypse, devils on his shoulder, and his search for spiritual meaning, combining a love for slide guitar, gospel blues, and roots rock with genuine reverence for shamans and sages ranging from Leadbelly and Mississippi John Hurt to Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung. Via twelve adventurously eclectic, often introspective tracks, Ellis roams a metaphysical no-man's-land, where blues, gospel, acoustic pop, and even a rhumba beat underscore his quest.
Produced by Jim Dickinson (Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones), God's Tattoos unwinds like an aural dreamscape that blurs the line between sacred and secular music. Ellis eloquently states his claim as a master musician and skilled lyricist who employs time-honored music forms to explore the common concerns of modern man - as exemplified by the title, which refers to psychic and emotional scars or "tattoos" we all wear inside. A unique listen that fits somewhere between Ry Cooder's Into the Purple Valley and Buddy Miller's Universal United House of Prayer, God's Tattoos provides inspiration and sustenance for roots music fans of all persuasions.

A Classic from the Bay!.......2005-10-26
This cd could very well be Messy Marv's best. It is a definite classic. He sure isn't the best rapper out there but he does bring some of the tightest beats. This is one of those album's that will be a classic for a long time. Plenty of great guest apppearances from Suga Free, Clover Geez, E-40, and Yukmouth. There's even a nice tribute to Mac Dre. Be sure to get this one.
instant classic.......2005-08-25
messy marv gets better and better wit time. this album is up there with disobayish. u got rich the factor, lil flip, dead prez on here the beats are sic overall a sic ass album
A good album from Messy Marv and the bay........2005-05-27
I don't want to get into a big rant here, but I liked the beats on this album and Messy's flow is good. I personally like it, think it's his best work. Also pick up his Best Of for some cool joints as well.
Let it Be Known.......2005-05-03
I thought Disobayish would be a difficult album to top. It was one of my favorites of last year. Thankfully Messy Marv came back with slaps on this new LP. The title, "Bandannas Tattoos and Tongue Rings" is a blatant shot at Black Wall Street rapper the Game. It seems like everyone is going hard at the Game right now. Marv is also airing out the rapper Obie Trice.
The production is consistently excellent and definitely on the same level as his last album. These are some of the hardest beats out right now, period. Almost every track on here is thick. Mess can hold an album on his own and the guest appearances are not out of control (but check out Suga Free's fly contribution to "Sexy Thing"). Some of the skits are funny, especially "Eat the Poot". Marv is on that laid back, beatin down the block vibe so it dont sound like a lot of cats from the bay that are hot right now. Someone is going to have to call their album "Sponge" after soaking game from "Bandannas Tattoos and Tounge Rings", another high powered album from one of the best in the Bay and definitely one of the best LP's so far this year
WHAT ELSE CAN I SAY.......2005-04-06

A Pleasent Surprise from the Emerald Isle.......2004-06-10
This album is fantastic and has heart and soul of a gifted song writer and storyteller. I've seen Ricky Warwick in concert as the opening act for Def Leppard and he's fabulous!!! Buy this record and you'll see what I mean!!
It is very good indeed, and it keeps on growing!.......2004-02-03
Ricky Warwick from The Almighty have abandoned the former punkish metal rock and gone for a more adult and melodic approach in Tom Petty style. "Tattoos & Alibis" is a pleasant album with mostly acoustic driven songs in a rather laid back manner. Maybe it will some time for the 14 songs to really sink in but some of the tunes will probably get your attention immediately, like the Steve Earle sounding "The church of paranoia", the Tom Petty inspired "Mysterioso", the title track "Tattoos and alibis" and the catchy "Ending is better than mending" with its obvious country roots.
Warwick's problem might be that the people who like Almighty, aren't that interested in this kind of music, thinking it's boring and lame, and the once who like Tom Petty, Steve Earle, Tom Cochrane, John Cougar Mellencamp etc. don't care for someone like Ricky Warwick due to earlier musical efforts. That would be a shame because this album deserves a better destiny than passing through totally unnoticed.
Erin Go Bragh.......2003-12-26
I'm sure I misspelled that but it's Gaelic for Ireland Forever. I am bilingual but my native language is Spanish. This is an excellent album in the vein of Mike Ness's Cheating at Solitaire. I bought this album back in June (which according to Amazon is before it even existed) and it had a different cover so my version may be slightly different. I was broke and would be unemployed for 3 months but was so moved by Ricky's acoustic performance that I had to dish out the cash and get it. Unfortunately, the studio versions do not match the intensity of his solo acoustic performance. Perhaps Ricky should have recorded his album in some live settings, like Jewel did with her debut. The fact remains, however, that these are solid songs. If you enjoy Johnny Cash and roots based alt country, you will enjoy this. If you are an aging punk, you'll love it. If you're Mike Ness, you might think it sounds awefully familiar. Perhaps it's because Joe Elliot produced it and this genre is certainly NOT up his alley but then again if it weren't for Joe bringing him out on tour I never would have even heard the talented songwriter. If you want a solid collection of infectuously good songs, get this.
Every Track Is Brilliant!.......2003-11-03
During the summer i went to the Def Leppard X concert in sudbury ontario and ricky warwick was the opening act. As soon as he was done i heard you were able to buy his cd and i rushed and bought 1 and boy i sure dont regret it..This cd's lyrics are straight from his heart and this album is great....recommend it highly!
A Must-Have CD!.......2003-10-01
Ricky Warwick's new solo effort, "Tattoos And Alibis", is a must have for any CD collection. His eclectic mix of influences are evident throughout, from the meaningful lyrics, to the use of instruments not normally found on a rock/pop CD. Co-produced by Joe Elliott and Ronan McHugh, and guest appearances from his many talented friends, Scott Gorham, Dick Decent, Seanie Foy to name just a few, adds to the diverse mix. From the first song to the last, this CD is full of musical treats, enough to satisfy any musical tastes. There are up-tempo songs with catchy choruses like "Mysterioso", "Can't Live With Maybe", "Three Sides To Every Story", and the title track, "Tattoos And Alibis". Songs with distinct country feel, "Church Of The Paranoia", "Ending Is Better Than Mending" and the folk flavored "Close To The Last Call". There are mid-tempo songs, with soul searching lyrics, "The Genuine Fool", "It Always Rains On Sunday", "Nothing Is Real", and "Minor Miracles". Ricky Warwick is definitly an artist worth listening to.
