5 out of 5 stars English Operetta, Beautifully Sung.......2006-10-25

For those that love operetta, most think of Vienese operettas of Johann Strauss Sr and Jr, Lehar, etc and the American Operettas of Romberg and Victor Herbert, etc. Just a bit later there was an English exponent of the form, one Ivor Novello, who was a contemporary of Noel Coward, who wrote the most glorious Romantic songs. This CD, absolutely gloriously sung is a wonderful place to start an exploration of this remarkable composer who also performed in all his shows, in non singing roles. England has through the years produced a number of wonderful sopranos who have specialized in the light opera genre. June Bronhill dominated the 1960s and 70s. Marilyn Hill Smith is her heir aparant, blessed with the most ravishing soprano, full and rich across the range, with a radiant top that rivals Joan Sutherland. Her performance of Bernstein's Glitter and Be Gay on Jay records version of Candide is one of my favorites. This CD is my favorite Marilyn Hill Smith recording. I haul it out when I have been very good and deserving of a special treat. If you are not familiar with the glorious melodies of Ivor Novello, start here, you won't be sorry.

With his 1999 Met triumph as Tristan--the most taxing of all Wagner's tenor roles--Canadian singer Ben Heppner has fully earned his heralded position as the great new Heldentenor of our time. His Lohengrin is a signature role, while his album German Romantic Opera has been nominated for a Grammy. Yet Heppner also commands tremendous versatility--and of a much more engaging character than that of the typical crossover effort--using his powerful, bronze-tinged tenor to tender and charming effect in My Secret Heart. This is a collection of songs roughly from the period between the two world wars, when music began to reach mass audiences via radio and screen. Many of these are almost forgotten gems--emblems of a vanished era--but once had wide cultural currency: the World War II hit "We'll Gather Lilacs," the radio show Family Hour's theme tune "Let My Song Fill Your Heart," and the oft-recorded 1919 ballad "The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise." Heppner, with his sturdy beauty of tone and sweet, natural-sounding vibrato, breathes new life into this genre. He handles the idiom's unabashed schmaltz with charm and brings a lilting urbanity to two Noël Coward tunes, with especially bittersweet refinement in "I'll Follow My Secret Heart." --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Almost too much lavender and roses, but a delight anyway.......2006-08-29

These are beloved popular songs from our grandparents' generation that are redolent of lavender an tears. Their sentimentality couldn't be more out of fashion, but Ben Heppner steps forward, like Mario Lanza before him, to offer thrills amidst the honeyed scents. He's totally sincere, and you'd have to be Alberich or Don Pizarro to react with anything but a melting heart. God, I'm falling into the same vocabulary as these songs. No need to blush, though, with such a great singer at hand.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Heppner Must Have A Large Parlour!.......2005-02-22

I purchased this CD after hearing Mr. Heppner in recital singing "Homing" for an encore. This small gem written by Teresa Del Riego is a haunting song about loneliness. We learn from the notes-- they are very informative with bios on the composers included here as well as the words to the lyrics-- that she composed this ballad in 1917, the year her husband was killed in France just before the ending of World War I. There are other lovelies here as well: "I Love Life", "We'll Gather Lilacs", "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise" as well as music by Noel Coward, Sigmund Romberg and Rudolf Friml. Heppner also sings "I'll Be Seeing You." It's such a relief to hear someone other than Liberace do that number since it was the song that he always used to close his television show in the 50's and unfortunately made into a syrupy cliche.

Mr. Heppner says these are songs of the parlour, stage and silver screen. His glorious voice which appears to be a combination of steel and gold fills a recital hall easily. He would need a huge parlour to sing in as well.

This CD is quite wonderful. There are no dull cuts. Since the songs are all about love, this would make a great February 14 gift.

1 out of 5 stars He can keep his secret to himslef.......2003-12-13

This is OBNOXIOUS, this dude should be in operas. i am speechless, he is one loud mouthed dude!

5 out of 5 stars What a 'crossover' album should be!.......2001-09-01

In general, I hate it when classical singers make 'crossover' recordings. Usually the singer has no idea how to sing 'pop' material in anything like the proper style - even someone who is singing it because he or she genuinely likes the music and not just to milk cash from the unsuspecting masses. But there are always exceptions to a rule, and this CD is one of them. Ben Heppner here scales down his huge operatic voice and shows his 'secret heart', a more intimate side of his musical personality.

There is no question that Heppner is one of the greatest tenors of our age. He is often compared with his fellow Canadian Jon Vickers (with whom he shares much of his repertory) but especially here, he is beginning to remind me more and more of Jussi Bjorling, and I can think of no higher compliment. Part of this is because Bjorling actually sang quite a bit of repertory similar to what Heppner sings here, but more importantly, both voices have an ideal combination of power and sweetness. Heppner's is essentially a very lyric voice despite its large size, and he is capable of great tonal beauty and sensitivity. This not only makes his Wagner, Giordano, and Berlioz very special, but makes him equally adept with the gentle little gems he sings on this disc. He is helped somewhat by the fact that these songs, most of which were written in the very early part of the 20th century, are a lot closer to the 'classical' style than more modern pop. But what really makes Heppner perfect for this material is his total identification with the texts, his tenderness, and his utter sincerity. Also, his diction is superb - you won't need the printed texts to understand what he is singing. In the hands of a lesser singer, some of these old fashioned songs would be absolute treacle. But an artist like Heppner can raise up even 'substandard' compositions and give them the aura of greatness.

In the more upbeat songs, Heppner sings with the thrilling, heroic tone that has made him in demand in every opera house in the world. He makes 'Let All My Life Be Music' into his personal mission statement. 'Homing' was also a favorite of another great Wagnerian tenor, namely Lauritz Melchior. 'I Love Life!', complete with splendid high C, is sung with enough cheer and vigor to bring anybody out of a depression. But this repertory is often gentle and introspective, and Heppner can also easily fine down his voice to a splendid pianissimo, drawing you in and enticing you to pay attention as opposed to banging you over your head like many other tenors do. Ivor Novello's 'Love is My Reason For Living' and Ernest Charles' 'Let My Song Fill Your Heart' are light, gracious Viennese waltzes. The familiar 'Roses of Picardy', 'Bird Songs at Eventide' and 'I'll Be Seeing You' are also sung sweetly and caressingly. Two more Novello songs are among the best tracks on the album. 'Someday My Heart Will Awake', is soft, gentle, and nostalgic, rising to a passionate conclusion. 'We'll Gather Lilacs' is obviously a love song from Heppner to his wife Karen (to whom the entire album is dedicated), full of yearning and deeply moving.

The operetta selections are even more special. In the Serenade from 'The Student Prince', which is alone worth the price of the CD, Heppner makes something truly thrilling of the declaration 'Oh, hear my longing cry!/Oh, love me or I die!', and ends with not one but two spectacular high Cs. What a pity that the chances of him ever recording the entire operetta are so slim! The cajolingly sung title song from 'The Desert Song' is almost as fine, as is 'Love Me Tonight' from 'The Vagabond King'. Finally, the title song 'I'll Follow My Secret Heart', with yet another brilliant high C, makes a splendid finish to this very enjoyable album.

I should also give credit to noted composer and orchestrator Jonathan Tunick for his warm, rich, and perfectly scaled arrangements of these songs. Like Heppner, he finds the perfect mood for each piece and never engages in schmaltz that one might expect from some of this material. The only complaint I have about this disc is the one I have about many contemporary CDs - why is there only 54 minutes of music on a medium that can hold almost 80 minutes? There are assuredly more than 18 songs Heppner could have recorded in this vein. I would have liked to have seen more operetta items in particular. Although I suppose they couldn't have recorded the Drinking Song from 'The Student Prince' as well as the Serenade without a chorus, it would have been nice if 'Deep In My Heart, Dear' had been included. Still, the quality of what is there far outweighs the quantity. The excellent documentation, in German and French as well as English, includes a personal note from Heppner, biographies of all the composers as well as Heppner and Tunick, and complete song texts. The cover shows Heppner surrounded by red velvet, designed, amusingly enough, by Red Herring Productions!

Whether you're an opera lover who wants to hear a great tenor in a lighter mood, or a fan of early 20th century popular music who is curious to see what it sounds like sung by a genuinely great voice, this disc is essential. It is an excellent introduction to Heppner's artistry if you haven't experienced it before, and after listening to it you might want to try some of his opera CDs, both solo recitals and complete recordings. There are few voices that could serve as a better introduction for a neophyte to the wonderful world of opera. If only more 'crossover' singers (both classical and pop) had Heppner's musical integrity...

3 out of 5 stars This cd has left me speechless, wow!.......2001-02-18

Air give me air, I need lots of air, air, air.......This cd has caused me a lot of adverse breathing.

The things that I have read about Ben have been very true. He really is a lot more than I ever bargained for. He is THAT GOOD.

I need to go out on a limb and say that he is the best tenor I have ever heard. In my wildest dreams I never thought anyone could be that good.

For this cd Ben choose to sing a lot of standards. Bravo! This is my kind of music. Ben did an excellent job crooning us with his golden voice. He knew when to hold back and when to sing at full strength. This is marvelous how he worked each song to get the full meaning out of it.

The only complaint I have is there was not enough of the good olde songs that I wanted to hear Ben sing. I know it's hard to please all the people all the time and I understand where Ben was coming from.

This cd is a must for the fans of beautiful opera singers who crossover with popular music.

4 out of 5 stars Re-listening to OZ from Oz.......2004-01-28

I've been relistening to the original original cast recording of this show. I'm really starting to enjoy it and find it quite entertaining. It has its own wonderful quality and well worth listening to over and over again.
It definitely would NOT have worked on Broadway with these arrangements because it retains too much the quality of a lounge act; not nearly 'big' enough for Broadway. BUT the performances are really terrific and the period arrangements are true to form.
I wish PRETTY KEEN TEEN, SURE THING BABY and TAUGHT BY EXPERTS had been kept in the Broadway production
      Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars OH BOY, WHAT A JOY, THE SHOWS A HIT!!.......2002-12-11

The Boy From Oz had its world opening at HER MAJESTY'S THEATRE Sydney in 1998. As a theatre lover and seen over 70 shows, this musical stands out as #1 around Australia and soon to hit and rule the world.
      The music is outstanding.
      The cast is the best.
      The show PHENOMINAL!!!!

The songs lift your spirits beyond belief. They just make you feel you are up there on that stage with the cast. You would understand why the songs are on this cd and the order they are in as they happen in the show if you saw it first, but trust me you can listen to the cd before you see the show.
The cast featured on this cd are Australias best!
TODD MCKENNEY (Singin'In the Rain, Crazy for You, 42nd Street, Strictly Ballroom{movie})just to name a few, Plays Peter Allen.
CHRISSIE AMPHLETT (The lead singer in the band "The Divinyls", plus several shows) plays JUDY GARLAND.
JILL PERRYMAN (Austarlias lady of the stage and screen {small and big} Hello Dolly!, Funny Girl, Annie, to name a few) plays Peter Allens Mother MARION WOOLNOUGH.
ANGELA TOOHEY (Cabaret, Jesus Christ Superstar) plays LIZA MINNELLI. A very scary fantastic roll. You would think you were watching Liza on stage she has the role down so well.
Robyn Arthur (Beauty and the Beast, Les Miserables, Cats, Cosi) plays several roles.
Murray Bartlett (4th season of Sex and the City, Australian tv & theatre shows)plays Greg Connell. Peter Allen's partner.

The music that features in this show is outstanding and moving. There are moving/love songs: All i wanted was the dream, Sure thing baby, Quiet please, there is a lady on stage, I'd rather leave while i'm in love, Best that you can do, Love dont need a reason, I honestly love you, Dont cry out loud, Tenterfield Saddler
Fun and enjoyable songs:Continental American, When i get my name in lights, Pretty Keen teen, Only an older woman, Dont wish too hard, Sure thing baby, Taught by experts, Not the boy next door, everything old is new again, she loves to hear the music, I still call australia home, I GO TO RIO!!

The stage, the music, the fun and the life of Australias and the worlds most out there and amazing enterainer comes to life in this musical and cd. When it comes to a stage near you, you have to buy tickets. And if your anything like the millions of Aussies that have seen it you will see it again and again. With the likes of the Phantoms, Les Mis etc.. around and gracing our stages after 20 or so years, i know THE BOY FROM OZ will still be around gracing our stages and our childrens stages for many many many years.

OH BOY! WHAT A JOY! THE BOYS A HIT!

THIS MUSICAL EXPERIENCE WILL TAKE YOU FROM NEW YORK TO RIO AND OLD LONDON TOWN! BUT STILL CALL AUSTRALIA HOME!
OR YOU MIGHT WANT TO GO TO RIO!

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......1999-12-15

Well, I saw this play while in Syndey in '98, and loved it then, and the more i listen to the soundtrack, the more i love it. It is amazing, and it totally recaps the feel of the play. I honestly love you, and Tenterfeild Saddler are two of the most amazing songs ever writen, and they are even more wonderful on this fabulous album! All praise Peter Allen

      4 out of 5 stars Almost Great.......1999-06-09

The problem with this CD is that it contains only a fraction of the music in the show itself. Admittedly, it contains the major numbers, but a lot of good stuff from the original show is missing. Since it is the only CD available, I recommend it, but if and when this show gets to the London or New York stage, a CD containing more of the entire work will doubtless become available. The liner notes are sparse. The listener who has not seen the show will not have a clue as to what is going on with the story line. This is a real shame, because understanding the story line brings a special poignancy to many of the songs. If you can wait a year or two for another edition to appear, do so. Otherwise buy it now. If it were complete and had better liner notes, I'd give this one five stars plus. The fellow playing Peter Allen and the gal playing Lisa Minelli are dynamite talents.

      5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT - A GREAT CD.......1999-04-17

I must say I have never seen the show here in Australia but after listening to the recording I will have to go see it. The quality of sound is perfect and the track changes are also perfect. Some of the songs on the CD are so well sung it almost brings a tear to your eye for example TENDERFIELD SADDLER, I HONESTLY LOVE YOU and DON'T CRY OUT LOUD The songs arent sung by one person, lines of lyrics are given to characters. Well worth buying to add to your collection

      Album Description

The follow-up to the phenomenally successful 'Between The Senses' (2002) is another blast of soulful indie from the brilliant Haven. 'All For A Reason' was produced by the legendary Johnny Marr & the Manic Street Preachers' knob-twiddler Dave Eringa & is a tremendous leap forward from their debut. The album kicks off with the brilliant harmonies of 'Change Direction' before delving into Travis territory with 'Have No Fear' - containing a sky-scraping chorus & guitars that positively sparkle. Elsewhere the single 'Wouldn't Change A Thing' is a match for anything on the Snow Patrol album & closer 'Getaway' contains a riff that will have had Marr salivating. 'All For A Reason' is the sound of a band about to hit the big time - miraculous, breathtaking & inspired. Ten tracks. Copy Controlled. Radiate. 2004.

      Album Details

Having Already Released the Anthemic EP, "Tell Me" from Early Eringa Sessions in Early Summer 2003, it Wasn't Until Late Autumn with Guitarist Nat Wason Beginning to Mend after Contracting Bells Palsy, Although He's Currently Still Suffering with the Illness, the Band Reconvened (Powering Rifts of the Album's Closing Track "Getaway" Declare Wason's Far from Defeated) with Johnny Marr to Finish the Work They Had Begun in London Earlier in the Year. "All for a Reason" Haven's Second Studio Album is a Soulful, Powerful Work. The Songs Freely Push Out Towards Emotional Extremes, Exploring Feelings with a Breathlessness Determination. Opener "Change Direction" is a Stately, Powerful Guitar Pop Song that Reminds Us that There's a World of Possibilities Out There, While the Intense "What Love Is" Jabs You Strongly in the Guts.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Sophomore Effort.......2006-02-03

Haven, a British rock band hailing from Manchester, returns with their sophomore effort, "All For A Reason." One day through Amazon.com, I searched for bands releated to those I had already liked and they suggested Haven. I bought their debut album, "Between the Senses," and I never gave it much of a listen. Their sound just didn't captivate me at all. However, I decided to give All For A Reason a try and I found a much more refined sound than their debut.

Their only single from the album, "Wouldn't Change A Thing," is beautifully crafted with guitars over a mid-tempo beat throughout the song. However, I think this song simply doesn't have the strength to be a single, let alone their only one from this album. Much better strength is shown in their heavy rocker, "Getaway," and the anthemic "Have No Fear." The styles of each song differ in their own little way with the groovier "Something Moved Me," and the touching "Together's Better." A string ensemble is also featured in "Don't Say A Word," a very uncharacteristic sound from the band. In my opinion, the title track, "All For A Reason," takes the cake, being the gem of this disc. The song is quite progressive, climaxing at the end with tons of percussion, guitars, and vocalist Gary Briggs screaming "It's all for a reason."

Gary Briggs is among the most talented vocalists I've ever heard. It's a wonder why Haven isn't more accomplished of a band for this sole reason. His lyrics are also very well crafted. If you're a fan of brit-rock, don't miss this one!

5 out of 5 stars A great album, now hard to find..........2003-01-15

If you don't know the band Low, this might be a great introduction to their unique style of slo-core music. The trio who hale from Duluth have a dark and beautiful sound that is probably best heard live. This album was recorded in a church in Louisville, Kentucky. The small venue makes for an interesting ambiance: during the first track, you can hear an ambulance go screaming by. The reverb is constant, and immerses you into this wonderful world of Low's creativity. This is not the best release from Low, but I find it to be one of my favorite live albums I own.

5 out of 5 stars This cd presents what is greatest about LOW... the awesome.......2001-10-29

This cd presents what is greatest about LOW... the awesome unique sound they create. The recording is very good. This may be a binaural recording? The audience is nice and quiet. LOW played an excellent set. LOW's sound is so big and beautiful and awesome in this cathedral.

If you like LOW a lot and would like a great recording of them live this cd is a blessing. I am very glad this cd is available. I also suggest this cd as an introduction to LOW because i think an awesome LOW concert is a better intro than a studio album.

I've seen LOW 8+ times. I've never seen them in a cathedral. I've never heard them in as beautiful sounding space as this recording. I consider LOW live one of the wonders of our world.

4 out of 5 stars I feel sleepy... still have to waltz.......2001-01-25

There is no doubt that in the sleepy land of slowcore Low reign supreme... So the question to ask is not whether you'll like this record or not but whether you like slowcore. If the answer is yes then just buy anything whith this band's name on it, you won't be disappointed!

As for those who don't know what slowcore really is about I'll say that it's a minimal, skeletal say some, form of music. Don't expect fast-paced rhythms, the tone is "low" and the melodies linger forever. Something you'll actually wonder whether someone is actually playing...

"One more reason to forget" is a superb live album which was recorded in a church. It might be a good entry point if you aren't familiar with the band!

4 out of 5 stars Low is a great live band and here's the proof.......2000-04-07

This CD is taken from a DAT recording of Low's 11/6/97 performance at the Church of St. Philip Neri in Louisville, KY, and contains material from Songs for a Dead Pilot and The Curtain Hits the Cast, as well as versions of "Venus" and "If You Were Born Today". The band is in fine form (I've seen them three times), and the quality of the recording is quite good, all things considered.

The recording appears to have been made by micing the room, but the audience is plenty quiet enough to make it work, and the added tension of hearing a few restless folks really adds to the experience.

The reason this isn't a five star CD is simple. There is nothing new on this disc! If you're already a Low fan, you already have most of these songs, and the live versions, though excellent, don't stray very far from the studio takes.

If you are new to Low, this is a great place to start. If you are already familiar with the band's catalog, this would be a fine (but not essential) addition to your collection.
