As hateful and usually untrue as most "Best of" collections are, this one is the real thing. You actually do get two hours and 20 minutes of Renaissance music performed so exquisitely, so correctly, and so passionately that it's as if an entire era in music makes itself understood through these CDs. The Tallis Scholars are as good as it gets in this repertoire. In addition to getting Allegri's gorgeous Miserere, you'll find Thomas Tallis's 40-part (40!) Spem in alium, some wonderfully weird and dissonant Responsories by Gesualdo, Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli (the "how-to" piece of the Renaissance popes, who demanded that the words be understood), and various other works. This stuff is like a finely woven tapestry and should be listened to bits at a time--it's amazingly rich and worth it. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Or, "Best Sacred Vocal Music of the 16th Century".......2006-06-15
My only major complaint with the Tallis Scholars' impressive compilation "The Best of the Renaissance" is its name. The 2-CD set only includes sacred vocal polyphony from the High Renaissance (16th century). That means you get no chansons, no madrigals, no instrumental music of any sort. Perhaps even worse, composers before Josquin are ignored: there's no Dufay, no Binchois, no Ockeghem - nobody who worked primarily in the 15th century. These omissions suggest that the Tallis Scholars probably consider the pre-Josquin period as late Medieval, rather than early Renaissance.
Once you accept "The Best of the Renaissance" for what it is - "Best Sacred Vocal Music of the 16th Century" - you can better enjoy its remarkable assemblage of High Renaissance polyphony. The first disc in particular is quite astonishing. The Scholars lead off with their signature performance of Allegri's "Miserere" - actually a Baroque-era composition in Renaissance "learned style." The Scholars brilliantly convey the "call-and-response" effect of dual choirs through exquisitely crafted acoustics. Turn this one up, turn off the lights, close your eyes, and you're in the Sistine Chapel!
The Scholars follow "Miserere" with an equally impressive performance of a work by their namesake Thomas Tallis - the 40-voice motet "Spem in alium." If "Miserere" hasn't overwhelmed your senses, this one will.
Two virtuoso Mass cycles follow: William Byrd's "Mass for Five Voices" and Josquin's "Missa Pange lingua." The former conveys a sublime, otherworldly beauty, while the latter is a superior example of the style of pervasive imitation that Josquin and his contemporaries pioneered.
The selections on Disc One are so impressive that Disc Two disappoints by comparison. The second set is dominated by two composers I never quite warmed to: Carlo Gesualdo and Giovanni Pierluigi Palestrina. Gesualdo was better known for his chromatic, genre-busting madrigals. His "Tenebrae Responses for Holy Thursday" are by contrast quite pleasing, but it's odd to hear sacred music written by a man who killed his wife and her lover. Palestrina's music achieves a sort of static beauty, but lacks forward motion. His "Missa Papae Marcelli" allegedly "saved" sacred polyphony, but arguably watered down the genre in its attempt to appease papal demands for simpler music.
The highlight of Disc 2 is Josquin's lovely "Ave Maria," a motet that provides yet another example of the Franco-Flemish composer's mastery of canonic forms.
"The Best of the Renaissance" expertly compiles the Tallis Scholars' best performances. Those looking for a comprehensive overview of the music of the Renaissance should be aware of its limitations, however.
A blast from the past!.......2006-02-24
This is a superb collection of Renaissance music. I especially loved Meserere on volume 1 of this two disk album.
Great Prayer Music.......2004-02-07
I perchased this cd and am truly truly glad I did. The sound makes me want to get somewhere and just cry out to God in joy, praise and reverence. The music is so peaceful pious (in a good way). Absolutely beautifuly executed. All the singers are with one accord-- and a great chord at that! Ye must needs purchase this cd!
Some great Renaissance choral music.......2004-02-01
When I recently played the first disk of this collection in the small bookstore/café where I work, a customer told me she had been trying to read but couldn't because she was so captivated by this CD's sublime music.
Although I am a sort of purist who hates when people say they listen to classical music just to relax, I find this CD set is perfect for inspiring reflection and relaxation. So, if you're looking for good music to relax to, this would be an excellent purchase.
The same goes if you're looking for some great Renaissance music. However, the term "Best of the Renaissance" may be a bit of a misnomer; the CD does not include a vast array of music from the said era. This collection is solely /a cappella/ music. Perhaps a more fitting title would be "The Best of Renaissance Choral Music." If you're looking for a broad sampling of music from this time period in one CD collection, this may not be for you. Nevertheless, if you want well performed choral music by some great composers, I recommend this CD to both Renaissance neophytes and aficionados without reservation.
Excellent but overpraised.......2003-12-30
The Best of the Renaissance is certainly worth buying if only for the amazing "Spem in Alium" by Thomas Tallis.Nevertheless, I do not share the boundless enthusiasm of other reviewers for this album.
To begin with, three Masses are featured on this album, two on the first cd. That is too much to my liking. And while the Mass Pange Lingua by Desprez is undoubtedly a wonderful piece, the other masses are not the best: the Mass for five voices by Byrd, while very beautiful, lacks the depth, emotion and intimacy of his Mass for three voices. The Missa Papae Marcelli by Palestrina is brilliant but nothing more than an academic exercise in virtuosity.
And I definitely do not appreciate Gesualdo's Tenebrae Responsories for Holy Saturday. This is simply very mediocre music that nobody would care for if it did not sound modern in its cerebral ugliness and thereby flatter our infatuation with ourselves.
I recommend "The Essential Tallis Scholars" either instead of or in addition to "The Best of the Renaissance", depending on your pocket and interest for Renaissance choral music. I would also recommend O Magnum Mysterium by the Robert Shaw festival singers. Although only a third of that album is devoted to Renaissance music, the interpretation is so beautiful and spiritual that it is really worth having in your Renaissance music collection.

Customer Reviews:
A great CD for your collection.......2002-09-15
If you are a music teacher this CD is a must. If you aren't, it STILL is a must. This CD is full of light but amazing classical guitar. I can hardly wait to pop it in at Christmas. Even if you aren't a huge fan of classical guitar I bet this will amaze you so much you'll want to keep listening. LAGQ flawlessly performs countless dances you'll wonder how they do it. The music classroom can use the Renaissance music for medieval topics and dances. A great CD to have for some high quality back ground music - relaxing music.
wonderful music.......2002-03-04
It just doesn't get better than this. If you want to hear Tchaikovsky played by super classical guitarists, this is the CD for you. Its the BEST!
From Renaissance to Nutcracker is brilliant........1999-11-28
The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet's Nutcracker Suite is a triumph for guitar arrangement. This selection is an excellent choice for one's holiday listening enjoyment. In the Renaissance dance suites included here, the L.A.G.Q. masterfully utilize a number of the percussive timbres available on the body of the classical guitar to complete the instrumentation and invoke the spirit of the pieces. Though the recording is not as loud as most of the other L.A.G.Q. recordings, the quality of the performances more than makes up for it.

Nice Background for the Holidays.......2007-01-11
Beautiful Adagios and a rich selection for the price. Audio travels to Vienna, London, Cambridge etc
One of my very top 5 favorite holiday albums!.......2005-11-19
What a delightful surprise this 2 disc album was and I'm not a big fan of Christmas music. I loved all the selections and felt they were well performed. This is a true "must have" for any Christmas collection. Superior to many other compliations on the market. This one is a keeper! It is the one album I'll pick first to listen to after Thanksgiving.
Wonderful POCOCAT?.......2005-07-16
Great CD. The reviewer who calls him/herself POCOCAT says he/she is an opera singer. Wonder how much work an uninformed singer gets?
A "fast spinning" vibrato,as you describe Ms. Price, is not the same as a wide vibrato. The former is a speed issue, the latter a width issue. Therefore, 4 variables exist: fast, slow, wide, slim. Thus, 4 types of voice exist: fast/wide, fast/slim, slow/wide, and slow/slim. Most often a singer leans toward fast/slim or slow/wide, in varying degrees. A matter of taste, yes, but learn more about the voice before you expound.

Customer Reviews:
Jacobs was overrated.......2005-09-28
Arnold Jacobs was a brilliant man who could have succeeded in practically any profession. He was also a fine musical pedagogue, judging from his verbal insights on this CD with respect to the human body as a musical instrument. Yet, I am amazed that he rose to the rank of tubist in a world-class orchestra such as the Chicago Symphony. Frankly, I found his tone quality uninspiring, although he had fine techinque. I have heard at least half a dozen tubists whose tone is far more pleasing musically. Among the bassmen/women of the world, Jacobs has become a semi-divine entity. I believe that he has been somewhat overrated as a result. I felt that his verbal commentaries were highly educational; I was disappointed by his playing overall.
The Great Arnold Jacobs Captured on C.D........2005-04-02
This is a prolific set of audio that captures the historical sound of Arnold Jacobs' playing and teaching. I bought this C.D. because I wanted to explore the limits and capabilities of a tuba player so that I could see if playing music on the tuba was for me. This C.D. banished any doubt that I had about the ability of a tuba player to achieve at the utmost musical level. I have never meet Mr. Jacobs in real life, but this C.D. made me feel as if I was in a master class or recital hall listening to him myself. I would recommend this C.D. to anyone who loves music. As Arnold Jacbos said " It's not about the tuba, it's about music".
arnold jacobs.......2001-05-16
This cd tries to capture arnold jacobs: a prolific teacher, player and above all a great man. while listening, you'll discover the ideals, the methods and ideas that made arnold jacobs the best tuba player that there'll probably ever be. The more complex issues and artistry of brass playing are explained in simple words and sayings. a great deal of jacobs' lectures is also given, and you can also see the importance of understanding the functioning of other body units that help us trough our playing (the brain). a great disc, highly recommended, not only for tuba players, but for all brass players.
inspiring technician musician artist.......2000-09-01
Cannot agree more, this is a wonderful exposition of Jacobs the teacher, for he had developed working concepts any wind player could adopt. His studio in the Fine Arts Building in Chicago was like a mecca for all wind players coming to Jacobs to resolve some deep-rooted performing problem. As he says( my paraphrasing) " they get tied up in knots, worrying about all the motions of the lip. . .you can't think about all those motions for they are thousands of motions from the brain to engage in performing a brass instrument "
As a brass player myself,(trombone & tuba) I have always sensed we have little repertoire to play of any interest, but Jacobs in a lecture here reveals this problem and one way to solve it, is to consciously search for things to play, like an aria from Puccini,or a particular non-tuba passage,to duplicate it,a piano or violin solo. What this approach implies is then for the brass player to develop skills as a consummate musician/ virtuoso, for you are forever challenged then to expand your repertoire endlessly,as much as the instrument or your technique will allow. I now find myself playing Chopin Preludes(Eb-minor,B-minor melodies only) on the trombone, and contrabass orchestral excerpts or trumpet etudes on the tuba, and Jacobs encourages tuba players to learn to read treble clef to be able to read any melody.
There are wonderful examples here from all genres in music from solo etudes in his studio to Berlioz and Wagner excerpts, solo and within the context of the orchestra. It all reveals the seemless consistent sound Jacobs was able to summon from his York tuba. Every attach was uniform, every tone even and pure,at least that is what he heard in his ear. That's another Jacobs credo, you have to have the sound in your head, what do you want your listener to hear. You command that.
The Bozza Sonatine(brass quintet) is also a wonderful performance of great brass music, great use of colours and entrances, breaking down the quintet into smaller duets and trios. This all with Chicago Symphony players makes it all the more interesting,a vintage performance from 1966.I recall those days where solo brass was considered an oddity, and unaccompanied solos even more so.
Jacob's sound should remain in your mind's hearing to duplicate it. Eugene Pokorny (Jacob's Chicago Symphony successor) also provides insightful interesting notes here.
Arnold Jacobs - Icon of education and performance.......2000-08-23
Amazing! For the students who studied directly with Arnold Jacobs, "Protrait of an Artist" will take you back to his studio, sitting right next to him. This excellent collection of lectures (lessons) and demonstrations are a fantastic embodiment of Arnold Jacobs' concepts and teachings. It is certainly a must for any music performer or educator. From the samples of CSO performances at the end of this CD to the practice tapes, the music on this CD is truely inspirational.

Andrea and Giovanni.......2007-05-10
I can only say "ditto" to all the previous reviews. This recording has to be the best one of Andrea's works, which are all too rarely performed. Love the strong, low-register, at-times-blasting brass! Surely this is how the Gabrieli's intended the music. It makes the hair stand up on the back of one's neck! McCreesh's dynamic's instincts are spot-on and are a dramatic departure from his previous efforts. I cannot praise this CD enough.....
This CD won several awards .......2007-03-24
The other reviews here are spot on and i agree! This is a very special disc.
May i also add that it was awarded Record of the Year 1990 by ABC-FM Stereo
here in Australia and Gramophone (UK) 1990 Early Music Award.
I also suggest looking at abcshop dot com dot au for a superb selection of High quality classical music most of which is produced in Oz and not seen in huge quantities overseas. Amazon does have a few also. Type in ABC Classics
and browse through the selection.
Venetian Coronation CD.......2007-01-09
The item arrived in a good time and was well packed and in excellent condition. It was less than ordering it elsewhere. I learned of the music on PBS radio and was enchanted by it. Having a copy is a joy.
Wow! This is the best I've heard Gabrieli.......2005-01-19
The performance of Giovanni and Andrea Gabrieli is quite amazing. The acoustical effects of brass, organ and voices bouncing of the walls in natural stereophonic sound is really beyond description. A good mix of brass ensemble, vocals, organ and gregorian chant. I had not listened much to Andrea Gabrieli before I bought this CD and I have to admit that his contributions to this CD are very powerful.
The "omnes" at the end of the cd has extraordinary musical power. It builds to an amazing climax that has caused many a chill to go up my spine. On a personal note, I listened to this song on my way to see my alzheimer's stricken mother who had died just moments earlier. The finale to this CD represents the finale to my mother's life to me and will always be an important piece of music to my soul. I truly love this cd.
5 stars doesn't do this recording justice.......2004-12-28
There is little to say about this superlative recording that hasn't been said before. It represents the high point of the recording career of Paul McCreesh and his Gabrieli Consort and Players. This recording happens to be one of the best recordings of the music of Giovanni and Andrea Gabrieli available.
If you only ever buy one recording of Gabrieli's music, make it this one. There are a few good recordings of Gabrieli's music but none are better that 'A Venetian Coronation'. The recording 'Venetian Church Music', by the Taverner Consort & Players, is similar in quality to 'A Venetian Coronation', only Andrew Parrott did not choose to present the music as a recreation of an event.
The cornetts, Baroque violins, Baroque trombones and organs are all played with great style and panache in this recording. The choir features men's voices - from soprano to bass, and the sound blends beautifully with the cornetts and sackbuts.
Listen to 'Deus qui beatum Marcum' and you'll buy this recording.
This recording was a miracle and a wonder in its time and it is still the most impressive recording of its kind.

Customer Reviews:
My best baroque CD.......2004-08-29
Over the years from time to time I bought some CDs with baroque brass ensemble music, always hoping it would be so fascinating as what I knew from my fathers PJBE vynil records. What I bought so far all are nice but also somewhat boring after short time. Unfortunately I never bought something from the PJBE until now, and this is the first time that a complete CD (and in this case even two of them) of baroque music for brass is surprising and fascinating me with every 'song', showing facetes and diversity I always missed on my other records. Finally nothing is like the original PJ!
superbe.......2004-02-04

I would love to write a review of this CD as my son's trombone teacher plays on it, but, after waiting over a month for it to be shipped, AMAZON.COM informs me that they don't have it in stock and can't get it. Why offer it if you don't have it>>>>
Amazing brass playing.......2002-09-30
There is only one word to describe the playing of this ensemble, AMAZING! Several players from the Chicago area come together to create this fine recording. The tracks that mainly got me hooked on this CD were the Funeral March by Grieg and the Susato Dances. The ensemble is the most balanced that one will find, and they create the perfect organ-like effect. All I can really say is that I highly recommend this CD.
Gotta love brass!.......1999-02-13

An unusual program full of rarities.......2006-04-09
Musick for Severall Friends. Seventeenth Century English Musick. Performed by Drew Minter, countertenor, and the Newberry Consort (Mary Springfels, direction and viola da gamba; David Douglass, pre-baroque violin; Kevin Mason, lute and theorbo).
Recorded in July, 1988, at Lone Mountain College Chapel, San Francisco, California.
Harmonia Mundi USA, originally published as HMU 907013, re-issued in 1996 as HMA 1907013.
The first thing that strikes one about this disc is the highly unusual repertoire: 12 songs by the relatively little-known John Wilson (1595 - 1674) plus a number of rare instrumental pieces by equally little-known composers such as Christopher Simpson, Henry Butler (an English Catholic who spent many years in Spain), Johann Schop (a German who presumabley learned these English-style tunes from ex-patriate William Brade) and Matthew Locke, the teacher of Henry Purcell. Of course, the Civil War and the Commonwealth in England (Cromwell!) made the first half of the 17th century a perilous one for musicians; all the more praise is due to Mary Springfels and the folks at the Newberry library in Chicago for digging up and sponsoring these enrapturing pieces which are here performed exquisitely, Drew Minter's silky countertenor seeming to be ideal for the songs, and Harmonia Mundi's heavenly engineering capturing the unusual sounds of the period instruments (of particular interest: David Douglass's pre-baroque violin) with a presence and clarity that leaves absolutely nothing to be desired. To be sure, this is an unusual program full of rarities (the only well-known piece is Wilson's Where the Bee Sucks), but it repays careful listening and is its own reward for any listener who is on the lookout for vocal or instrumental delights of the period and already has the chief works of the more mainstream composers.

great album.......2006-05-31
I've been riding around for a couple of weeks listening to Parts Unknown and haven't gotten tired of it yet. As a songwriter, it's the type of music that makes you want to go home and write. I don't think you can get more direct and honest than his singing voice, and the songs are amazing. A seemingly simple "bad man" song like "Roberts the Dread Outlaw" turns out after several listens to be not so much about the outlaw- Roberts doesn't do anything but leave before anything bad happens- but about the hunger for excitement and adventure in a sleepy small town. It's much more real stuff than an outlaw story. Everything on the album is told with a knowing sense of humor. Davis is a little like John Prine, and a lot like Billy Joe Shaver. He's severely underrated and the best thing I've heard in a while.
A magical home-grown country-folk album.......2004-01-25
Singer/songwriter Davis Raines may never gain the world renowned of intellectual brothers like Waylon and Willie, but his keen observations of life and the road, painted in original, often fanciful word pictures, is something fans of Jennings and Nelson (and Keen and Earle) should hear.
His songs essay the travails of a showman's life, unfortunate interpersonal intersections, and the love for a favorite pair of boots ("they're sweet on my feet and they're tough as a mustang"). He writes with the incisiveness of pulp fiction giant Jim Thompson on his first-person narrative of a wrestler's life, "Mr. X," vents his NashVegas frustration in "Music City Blues," and dreams of the transporting freedom of AM's promise in "Radioland."
Davis' delivery is so unassuming and natural that the brilliance of his phrase making can pass you by on first listen. He sings of feeling "as edgy as a brand new knife," and effortlessly rhymes the couplet "so break out the breakdown, we'll give `er a whirl / put fog on the mountain with Lester & Earl." The musical accompaniment, filled with fiddle, mandolin, dulcimer, accordion, banjo and acoustic guitars provides fine backing, accenting the folky-side of Raines' songs.
Having started his musical career in his mid-30s, Raines is unlikely to ride the fast track to Nashville stardom, but CDs like this will build him a reputation among those who take a few steps off the beaten path.
