Big fat guy with a Big Fat sound ! ! ! .......2007-04-10
This is hard and heavy funk and soul - - literally... big, beefy, brassy...
Sadly, the lead singer, the 400lb. Baby Huey died a year before it was released.
Actually, the band itself is worth the purchase... however, no doubt, Baby Huey fronted it.
- - Tracks include classic "Memphis" type soul (typical to the era) as well as the live funky horn and percussion driven high energy grooves that make the album worth the purchase... Though true, many of the tunes aren't THAT much different than their covers (or sound like you heard them before) the energy is definitely there... A high point being Curtis Mayfield (who signed him)'s MIGHTY MIGHTY SPADE AND WHITEY which is just as good (if not better) than the original.... you can really feel the party atmosphere!
A few tunes seem a cross between RIPPLE and BLACK HEAT... admittedly as a whole the album is not all RAW FUNK... however when the band does go into RIPPING mode... they RIP... A few tunes even have an (early) Chicago influence while others are typical Wilson/Otis/Bobby Womack-ish influenced soul... though again, the album shines for its group sound - - a favorite tune of mine being MAMA GET YOURSELF TOGETHER, with its cranked up horn/rhythm guitar driven groove (with a suspiciously Booker T'ish type setting on a really fat sounding Hammond.)
If you like this type of stuff, I'd definitely get KASHMERE TEXAS THUNDER SOUL (actually first...)
Classic Horn Band.......2007-01-09
For those who are fans of Chicago Transit Authority and Blood Sweat and Tears, this album presents another side of the "horn band" sound of the late '60's and '70's. Funky, raw and over the top approach to the music.
THE LEGEND SAYS IT ALL.......2007-01-03
ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS A LEGEND IN IT'S SELF. LISTEN TO ME REMINDS ME OF BACK IN THE DAY WHEN I USE TO GO OUT TO THE CLUBS AND THE GUYS WOULD BE BREAK DANCING ON THE FLOOR. (AHHH THE GOOD OLE DAYS) THIS CD IS A CLASSIC A MUST BUY!
"Listen to Me," Baby Huey is the real deal.......2006-10-24
James "Baby Huey" Ramey died before his album came out in 1971, but put on the first track, "Listen to Me," and you know this sucka is immortal. Baby Huey is R&B, soul, rock'n'roll, and psychedelia all rolled into one 400-pound fireball of pure talent and grit. The sucka could sing and he was backed by the tightest band on earth. Sucka played for royalty, sucka played for the hood, sucka died while making this debut album that would have sent him to the top of the world. Do yourself a favor and buy this album now! Your booty will thank me later.
A soul/blues.funk/psychedelic classic........2005-08-08
'Huey, a chicago native, was a protege of Curtis Mayfield (who produced this album and released it via his Curtom imprint) and somewhat of an eccentric. He was 400 pounds, had a huge afro, a King Tut beard and dressed flamboyantly. The picture on the back of this album is priceless : him in a pinstripe suit with a huge ankle length robe over it standing reading a cookbook. He recorded a handul of singles and died of a heartattack aged 26 before this album came out in 1970
He took his cues from Chicago groups like The Impressions (the group Curtis Mayfield fronted before going solo), Mayfield himself, the psychedelic blues albums by Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf released on legendary Chicago label Chess Records in the late 60's and then mixed them with some raw, ballsy Stax soul via Booker T & The M.G's melting pot to create something that only Mayfield, Issac Hayes, James Brown, Funkadelic and Sly Stone managed to better.
You have the driving, gritty soul of "listen to me" & "hard times", the funked-up psychedelic blues of "mighty mighty" & "runnin'" (which Mayfield wrote and later recorded but the Huey original is the definitive version), instrumental jams like "mama get yourself together" & "one dragon, two dragon" and, finally, you have what have to be two of the greatest cover versions ever recorded : his funked up version of "california dreamin'" and his staggering 9 minute + version of Sam Cooke's "a change is gonna come" which has to be heard to be believed.
Rap fiends should definately check this album as it's been sampled to death over the years and "listen to me" was a party favorite back in the days of Bronx block parties in the 70's. If you're a fan of blues or Hendrix and would like to start investigating soul/funk but find James Brown too dancefloor friendly or Marvin Gaye too polished then this would a good starter along with the first 3 Curtis Mayfield studio albums.

Even though I don't generally like jazz vocals . . ........2006-08-17
. . . I've got to make an exception for Dwight Trible. With an Andy Bey-ish delivery and extraordinary vocal control, Trible, sporting a rich baritone, is the real deal. Combine his rare vocal talent with very tasty and understated instrumental accompaniment, and you have a disc to be contended with.
If you're like me and don't particularly like jazz vocal, I suggest you think of his voice as an instrument of uncommon emotional range and precision, not paying attention to the lyrics, which, though serviceable, seldom reach anything approaching profundity. If you are predisposed to vocal jazz, you will hardly find a more accomplished singer than Dwight Trible. In either case, you win.

all.......2007-03-08
Cool Cool Water and Whuskey brought me back to the 1940s when alot of music meet something in a better life than now with music going no where. Today Country music has little in it .Too BAD.But I'm just a country boy of middle 60's in age.
An excellent 25 track collection of the Sons' RCA 1940s work.......2003-05-07
These tracks were recorded for RCA Victor from 1937-1951 and ASV as put out this excellent sounding compilation of their best from this period. Roy Rogers only appeared on 4 tracks of this CD but of course, with and without Roy, the music is great and some of the highlights include the RCA Victor recordings of "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" and "Cool Water," the WWII war song "Stars and Stripes on Iwo Jima," "Wagons West," "The Last Roundup," "Red River Valley," and "Cigareets, Whusky and Wild, Wild Women," but the entire CD is full of great music. If you already have their Decca recordings on greatest hits CDs and can't afford to shell out the Bear Family boxed sets, this is the CD to buy for their 1940s RCA recordings as the music is timeless and they are one of the greatest vocal groups of western music ever.
Sons of the Pioneers.......2003-05-01
If your a Sons of the Pioneers fan,ya gotta add this one to your collection. It does have some of the standard "Sons" songs, but there are some gems on this C.D. "Serenade to a coyote" is my favorite on this C.D. It seems that the more i look for sons of the pioneers music, the more i appreciate what they did for "Cowboy" music

Customer Reviews:
What ??.......2006-12-10
The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!
Nice Voice, but not a nice person...(read on, pls.).......2006-01-07
Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!
A let down.......2004-09-24
I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.
The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19
This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

Customer Reviews:
A DIZZYINGLY BEAUTIFUL AURAL PAINTING.......2000-07-05
They've been around the surf music scene... forever! Or so it seems. Best known for Beach Boyish vocal harmonies, The Malibooz have turned in a surprisingly deep, haunting album of spiritual music. Don't run away. The music evokes the power and emotion of the sea, and that seems to be where John Zambetti and company have found God. The production is thick, a crime on most recordings, but in the context of Living Water it works with the music to create a dizzyingly beautiful aural painting that will take your breath away if you allow it to. It's difficult to describe music like this. Try to imagine Brian Wilson in the middle of a profound religious epiphany. The result is magical; enough reverb, crash and roar to turn on the surf crowd and enough ethereal beauty to please new age fans. It's likely none of that matters much to The Malibooz. This seems like an extremely heartfelt declaration of devotion to God and ocean, and we're just happy to listen in.
An Absolutely Beautiful Album!.......2000-02-28
This album by the venerable surf band was borne from an idea by leader John Zambetti, who decided to put his church's mass prayers to music to convey the essence of the ocean. It was a noble gesture that paid off in spades, as Living Water (The Surfer's Mass) is an absolutely beautiful album that fans of the Beach Boys and Jeffrey Foskett will love. The album basically intertwines soft, harmony filled introspective tunes with shorter, uptempo surf pieces, and this approach works well. Songs like "Gloria" and "Lamb of God" are breathtaking. "Bitter Water" and "Caught a Wave" could easily have fit on the Beach Boys' L.A. (Light Album) or Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue. "Summer Wind" is the "Don't Worry Baby" of the 90s. The low tones from Walter Egan's guitar carry the surf tunes like "Kyrie," "Alleluia," and "Doloxogy/Amen." The production on this disc is as crystal clear as island waters. You certainly don't have to be a devoted Christian to bathe in Living Water (The Surfer's Mass).
This is some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard!.......1999-10-10
This one caught me totally off guard! After just listening to Malibooz Rule! I popped in the CD expecting to hear Surf with all the typical reverb, twanging and teen beach stories. What I heard was surf music but the major difference being it was a series of beautiful, lush, melodious harmonies and soaring Beach Boy like vocals all taken from prayers. You heard me right, prayers. So right from the get go you have the feeling that this is going to be a unique and out of the ordinary experience, trust me it is. John Zambetti, one of the founding members of Malibooz was backing up his church choir on guitar and was inspired to conceptualize this whole project. This is some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. Divinely inspired from the heavens this gorgeous group of songs will give you chills and fill your heart with the joy and inspiration of life itself. What an ingenious blend of surf, soft rock/pop and religious passages this is! The subtlety of the tide is accompanied by angelic voices and equally heavenly guitar breaks. If you are not one who attends church or is very religious it doesn't really matter, this is great music that can be appreciated by a wide range of discerning tastes. Listen closely and let the music speak to your heart. The love and respect for God and nature is conveyed through the music. A spiritual dance that's a slice of heaven awaits you. Extraordinary!
A real work of art, a labor of love........1999-07-17
I usually don't review vocal material at all, because there's not much of the trad harmony genre that I like at all. The Malibooz are the exception, and with this most unusual album, it seems appropriate to let you know about this fine CD. This is the first surf concept album, a celebration of the the aqua basin, the fluid birth mother of life on earth. In some respects, this is like a mass, and in others it's like very high quality surf vocal pop, and in all respects it pays homage to the water. Almost religious in it's sound and feel, these tracks display a real sense of honest and humble awe towards the sea. You can feel the pure emotional worship in their voices and playing. It is a religious CD, but unlike many such releases, it does not put off the average Joe open to contemplating mysteries of life. The most deeply felt tracks are the ones about the sea itself, and how magical it is to interact with the waves. This is a real work of art, a labor of love. Beautiful harmonies, delicate balances between sounds and textures, and extremely clear recordings. This CD demands that you sit and listen in a quiet place, and reflect on the wonder of the sea.

Album Description
Alternative Press's "Band To Watch In 2005" debut on Minty Fresh with an explosive clash of crackling fuzz and rusted souls. The Living Blue's fiery, urgent rock has already been singled out for exposure on the WB's popular show, "One Tree Hill", on MTV2, and on the MTV series, "Power Girls". Produced by Adam Schmitt (Velvet Crush, HUM, The Action) and The Living Blue. They've opened for The New York Dolls, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, The Raveonettes, and The Strokes.
Customer Reviews:
Your stereo equalizer will stay pumped up throughout.......2007-03-02
The first three songs on this CD aren't bad, and really, they don't let up. "State of Affairs" is the loud sound of a cocky band that's ready to let rip. "Murderous Youth" has great lyrics and a more jangly quality to it; "Tell Me Leza" features a darker sound but retains a radio-ready quality and an echoey guitar in spots that's interesting. Too bad the thick-sounding production by Adam Schmitt gives the music an overly loud, diluted quality that harms the CD. Not till "Greenthumb," halfway through, does this CD let up a little on the overwhelming wall of sound that pervades -- but only a little. A synth in the middle of "Greenthumb" provides one of the rare moments on the CD when guitars, bass and drums aren't the only instruments blasting through the speakers. More than ever before, Stephen Ucherek often stretches out the phrasing of his lyrics, which give them an odd dialect that's not quite British-sounding but close.
Frankly, from "She Bleeds Pink" on down, "Fire, Blood, Water" by Living Blue is nothing special. The band knows how to rock, that's for sure; some of the mini guitar solos are good, the bass is really bassy and the drumming is heavy. "Wishlist" has an especially worthy headbanging quality to it. But what's missing on this album is interesting hooks and melody. Everything's too one dimensional, especially toward the end, which makes it a somewhat forgettable CD in the final analysis. Not long ago, these guys were supposed to a be a hot, up-and-coming rock band on the underground scene, and this first release on Minty Fresh was the beginning of their new career under a brand-new band name (formerly they were known as the Blackouts Everyday Is a Sunday Evening). The quality of songs on this CD isn't anything stellar, but it's also not completely horrible. Like Living Blue's (and the Blackouts') other two releases, this album is a mixture of some good stuff (but not great) and some very average-sounding stuff.
Finally, straight-up Rock & Roll.......2006-01-07
this is raw rock and roll at its absolute best. it wouldn't be fair to dump this album in one of today's cookie-cutter, sub-rock genres. this band claims no allegiance to a preconceived, imprisoning concept. they're not "reviving" something thats dead, they're not "post" anything. they're a passionate rock band with a solid, no-frills, no-gimick sound. the album is full of killer riffs with heavy, perfectly arranged backdrops. the vocals fit just right and the band as a whole is as tight as ever (they can rock it just as well on stage) as long as rock and roll doesn't go stale, neither will bands like this.
AP review: 5 out of 5 stars!.......2006-01-05
Get your rock on.
Stop what you're doing right now. Go directly to the record store and buy Living Blue's latest disc. Do not buy CDs from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah or Bright Eyes - and for heaven's sake, put down that Strokes disc. Fire, Blood, Water's tracks burst with the kind of fuzzbombs and jangly riffs found on your parents' old Replacements and R.E.M. records, but feel as fresh and innovative as the latest iPod jam. Vocalist Stephen Ucherek announces his cryptic intentions via a mop-topped yowl that's neither sensitive-boy mumbly nor emo-harsh, atop heaping helpings of shambling garage rock, angst-punk and college radio-playlist esoterica. The result? Finally, a rock band who are doing something interesting.
Their best work to date.......2005-11-01
While the members of the Living Blue have previously released material as the Blackouts, "Fire, Blood, Water" welcomes not only a name change, but a significant increase in memorable songs. Here, they are no longer "just" a garage rock revival band, but a band that can deliver intense, driving rock from a palette of sounds. The magnificent "Tell Me Leza" is plaintive, 80's-infused power pop. "Greenthumb" has a retro, slightly psychedelic feel with a groovy electric organ solo. "Conquistador" is a thumping, galloping slice of rock fun and a great closer. "State of Affairs," "Murderous Youth" and "Serrated Friend" are frantic, crunchy guitar numbers that instead of sounding uniform are all uniquely catchy and distinct.
Elsewhere, the disc is a bit less memorable, but in no way unenjoyable. Lead singer Stephen Ucherek's vocals have come into their own on this release, with his faux British accent and high-pitched inflections that manage to sound exciting rather than annoying. They seem much more confident than before, which really helps the material shine.
The Living Blue is an example of a band that plays music for fun's sake, and that's apparent on "Fire, Blood, Water." Like its name implies, the CD is intense yet flowing. Highly recommended for lovers of fast, guitar-driven rock.
Cool Guys.......2005-10-14
What a sweet album. Just can't match a live show, but great none-the-less. This album's in constant rotation on my iPod. Plus Steve, Schroeder, and Joe rock and roll man. These are cool guys, they're great drinking buddies, and this stuff reminds me of fun times. I wish I could say Silent Treatment still rocks harder, but no longer! ha ha.
