The Neville Brothers are a New Orleans institution. Their voices glide freely and harmonize into a rich texture. For Yellow Moon, they enlisted the help of producer Daniel Lanois to meld their voices and rhythms with his swampy dreamscapes. The percussion is subtle, the guitars melt into the background, and the voices puncture the placid night sky, as if providing the soundtrack to an old western. Two protest-era Dylan songs ("With God on Our Side" and "The Ballad of Hollis Brown") are recast as modern anthems for spiritual reconciliation. The Sam Cooke classic "A Change is Gonna Come" remains an envied promise, while the original material (the title track; "Sister Rosa," about Rosa Parks) is among their finest. Not a return to form, but rather a welcome break from tradition. --Rob O'Connor

I'm reviewing this CD, but ANYTHING by the Neville Brothers is worth a try. This band defies description - how do you categorize a band that can do just about anything and really can't be pigeonholed. Not a bad song on this CD and the song Yellow Moon is a pure work of art. A real magical, funky, soulful Bayou song. Absolutely love it and I can listen to these guys anytime.

Enraptured By The Divine Aaron.......2005-08-10

The Neville Brothers have yet to make the album I hunger for. 'Yellow Moon' is close: one of Dan Lanois' finest efforts. And it provides the template, the benchmark for my appetite. But it's a compilation entitled,'The Neville Brothers' from the Master series on Polygram from 1996, that strikes even closer. Doesn't seem to list on Amazon! Perhaps it's the selection, pulling from their most commercially productive, accessible collections, the very finest work. It's not that these albums, in themselves, lack judicious selection. The playing is uniformly excellent, the range and degree of accomplishment in various genres is impressive. Possibly the brothers collective gifts are too sprawling to capture my 'perfect' Nevilles. I have to admit that its Aaron's voice that cuts the band from the ruck of other groups purveying the New Orleans sound. It's always been his divine register that elevated the most mundane texts to the quality of hymns. 'Fearless','Will The Circle Be Unbroken',the Dylan and Cohen covers, are rendered here in ways their authors wouldn't even have prayed for. And supremely, there is Sam Cooke's and my own anthem,'Change Is Gonna Come'. Until Aaaron, only Richard Manuel's take on,'Rock n' Roll Joint' could bring me to the verge of tears. Of course, one could pursue the solo Aaron outings. For me, this has fallen into another syndrome: too much saccharine song selection. In lieu of that elusive Neville's album, for which time is rapidly diminishing, this compilation is as good as it gets.

Jump up and down now.......2005-01-25

This is a typically fine album by these New Orleans legends. It contains a good mix of originals and cover songs. Several of the songs are "message" songs, inluding great covers of Sam Cooke and Bob Dylan songs. Another great cover is the Carter Family's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken". This is an all-around solid album, and fans of the Brothers should enjoy it.

A Delicious New Orleans Gumbo.......2004-12-08

I had the pleasure to get up close and person with Aaron Neville when he sang for us at a New Orleans Navy base. Believe me it's overwhelming! This beautiful, angelic voice comes from a very BIG, muscular man. The Neville brothers have always been one of my favorite groups. This is one talented family. I got this CD recently when I heard it being played at a Barnes & Noble store. I could hardly keep my feel still when I heard "Yellow Moon," and bought the CD immediately. Terrific harmony, vocals and music that are an absolute joy. I only have one problem...I can't play it when I'm driving! I just get too caught up in it when I hear "Yellow Moon," because my feet want to go. Each selection has New Orleans spice, like a delicious gumbo.

Composer, premiere player, soloist - Yin Cheng-zong's authentic Yellow River Concerto.......2007-07-03

I owned this disc for more than 12 years already. The CD cover was already the third one.
Lang Lang recently made a new recording of this piece with DG.
I heard master Yin play this piece (in Lang Lang's stead) last evening in Hong Kong Cultural Centre, and he moved me to tears.
Yin Cheng-zong is over 60 years old now. He lived through the various turmoils of China. It requires life experience and patriotism to interpret this piece, so very sorry, I haven't heard any foreign pianist playing this piece yet, let alone on record.
HOWEVER, Yin Cheng-zong did made a recording of this piece with Claudio Abbado, but the recording has never been released by the PRC official broadcasting agency. Yin himself claims that this was one of the most memorable performances he had of this piece - Abbado understands the piece so well that Yin was highly amazed!
The foremost player and interpretor of this piece remains Yin Cheng-zong, but I must say that ALSO hearing Lang Lang playing this piece a couple of days ago (also in Hong Kong), Lang's playing of this piece is vastly improving.

something missing and deadly wrong here.......2006-11-07

when i listened to this concerto, the first impression was something deadly wrong. if you want to portray and describe a river, the best way is to start from its origin, it might be just a trickle of dripping water and a small stream at first, then when going down, meet and entwine with other small streams, it gradually evolving into a great river all way down to the ocean. that's the way how you use the music to portray a river.
but the composer of this 'yellow river' was educated in the chinese communist system, his composition was still dominated subjectively by the blind chinese revolutionary passion, the concerto from the very beginning sounds like listening to a cultural revolution marching song, banging and pounding so headstrong against almost all the foreign elements, condemning so viciously and so mercilessly with hatred, like revolutionary army at wars, like those stupid formula musicals, songs and plays created in the cultural revolution era to please the butcher chairman mao. there's almost no big difference here. when you listen to this concerto, only a small part and portion make you feel like something good and wonderful offered by the river, most part of it sounds too clueless military.
we all knew that the chinese civilization and it's culture was originated from the yellow river, it's like a mother of china. yes, yellow river is always unpreditable and changing, its inevitable floodings in the history caused a lot of deaths and tragedies, but a river could never be always so merciless and vicious. this concerto and this music is not an appropriate interpretation of the yellow river but a chinese communist revolutionary marching song by a die hard communist composer. it's a very bad concerto actually.

I've heard The Yellow River Cantata for long time before I got this CD, this CD would be a very nice CD on your collection. And when I came to Yellow River (Hoang He) in the summer and spring, I knew this concerto said the trust: The river is always changing, savage and quiet. There is enough Asian spirit on this CD. As you know, every old chinese word and song are based on a story (called Gu dian, means classical) and if you know much about chinese stories you will feel completly this CD. One of famous Gu Dian is the fighting of Chinese people against the flood every year at the river's banks, for thousand years. You can find more information and "Gu dian" about this river in Chinese histories or stories.

I'm a HUGE Mantovani fan and have had mixed results trying to upgrade my collection to CDs. This collection is the original orchestra arrangements of all the classics. This is the one to buy.

The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! It is a GREAT DEAL for the money, even at the full price!!!

The term crossover can mean many things, and, as Sony Classical has proved time and again, attempts to package classical artists as sophisticated dabblers in world music can be as embarrassing as it is, on rare occasions, stunning. On the cover of this, their Sony Classical debut recording, we have four essentially classically-trained guitarists slouching like members of a rock group. The 60-minute disc careers through music inspired by Africa, Brazil, the Balkans, Chile and Japan, with stops in reggae, jazz, and New Music along the way. Despite the obvious talent and technical skill of the L.A.G.Q.'s members, this listener found little to enjoy in this particularly watered-down and superficial-sounding repertoire. --Gwendolyn Freed

This is one of LAGQ's best CDs. My favorite tracks are the African, Klezmer, and South American pieces. There's plenty of variety, along with different accompanying instruments and sound devices.

lyrical style that compels the soul.......2003-01-28

This is the first album by LAGQ that I bought, and actually they are the reason that I got onto Amazon.com- I couldn't find their album anywhere here in Canada. They are truly an amazing group, and they bring out the passion and vibrancy, the energy and life, and the mystique that is possessed by the relatively simple-looking guitar. The African Suite and Farewell to Stromness are by far my most loved tracks on this album. They have crafted masterpieces that any fan of classical music will be able to appreciate. This is a listening experience you won't regret!!

An apparently underscored album.......2000-12-29

If one truly loves the versatility and beauty of the guitar than this album, and the entire repetior of the LAGQ, is an invaluable asset. They yet again astounded me with their fearless headfirst dive into uncharted territory with dazzling effects. I thoroughly enjoyed this CD and seriously question the reliability of any reviewer who considers this album "watered down."

Unfortunately, Amazon's reviewer is sadly uninformed about the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet's history in doing exactly what they have mastered on this CD- dabbling. While not every track is a smash hit, when the quartet is on, they're really on. Their African Suite and Klezmer Dances are dazzling, and these guys have done this sort of thing before: everything from the Main Street Parade to the Nutcracker Suite to a hoedown on previous recordings. L.A.G.Q. is LAGQ at their best- don't let Amazon's review fool you.

Not for everyone.......2000-08-02

Although this album demonstrates the versatility of the Guitar there are pieces that just do not work for me. This feeling is similar to the feeling I get from Elliot Fisk's album on Paganini Caprices...brilliant technique but the translations are forced and not appropriate for the guitar. There are pieces on this album I enjoy and others that irritate. Unfortunately for me, I did not review this album before I purchased it. But hey, one man's garbage...

Let me just say that Akeboshi is a very talented artist, one that I am a big fan of. Musically, I thought this CD was just OK, though. I just didn't like it as much as some of his older stuff.

Even though I $18 is pretty cheap for an import CD, these 6 tracks just aren't worth $3 each. Except maybe the title track "Yellow Moon."

amazingly beautiful.......2006-04-18

Naruto fillers are good for one thing at least: finding amazing new songs from the new openers and enders. example: the newest ender: Yellow Moon by Akeboshi. I've always loved Akeboshi, but when I heard this, it was so beautiful I almost cried. The CD is classic Akeboshi, with themes that stick in your head for hours after you've listened to the song. Bonus, this CD's at the actual price, instead of the jacked-up prices Japanese import CDs are usually at. It's a beautiful CD, and you won't regret it.

Excellent piano literature.......2002-11-13

This CD contains well-known Chinese piano literature that is rarely heard of in the USA. It has a good selection of piano literature from China and is a great introduction to some of China's best composers in the 20th century.

"The Moon's Reflection Over The Second Spring" (Chu Wanghua) is definitely my favorite track and this arrangement with a traditional ensemble is gorgeous. "100 Birds Singing In Homeage To The Phoenix" (Wang Jianzhong) contains very ethnic sounds, achieved by the creative use of ornaments, especially in the opening of the piece. The piece "Autumn Moon Mirrored In The Lake" is a setting of a popular Cantonese folksong by Chen Peixun. Evocative of a Chinese harp, this piece is mostly pentatonic and pianistic with many arpeggios and trills. Another piano standard is "Flute and Drum At Sunset" by Li Yinghai. This CD is definitely worth listening to gain more insight on 20th century Chinese music.

Beautiful craftsmanship.......2000-06-22

This is a recording of glorious depth and tonality. My favourite track - "The Moon's reflection over the second spring" - is brilliantly evocative, and showcases the wonderful talent of Eileen Huang. For those wishing to push the boundaries of the western piano concerto tradition, this CD offers an easy access to alternative musical traditions.

the other reviewer said that the liner notes are "entertaining". well, that is one big spit in the face of people who made this piece of art. this album, liner notes, artwork, there is nothing "entertaining" about it, thank god. it is a serious experience. i find this collaboration to be very, very good, since the "mixture" of nww and c93 is extremely natural here. i'd say that the substance of this record is c93, that is to say, tibet's experiences, while the FORM in which they are, as a substantial part of the record, presented, is nww. the album is about 45 minutes long, which is just right, since if it was longer, it would probably lose some of its strength and intensity. this way, it feels like a hurricane, when i listen to this record in its entirety, i am swept away in the end, it is extremely powerful and profound, it is also quite mystical, so that adds to the magic of it all. go for it, this is a brilliant record, very well balanced and completely thought out.

Good combination.......2002-07-20

This record is by Tibet of C93 and NWW, and this record shows that in an obvious way. A couple tracks that sound like Tibet's work in his C93 albums, and a few tracks of whales on acid by NWW. Maybe not whales themselves on acid... but something is on acid. Maybe the trains are on acid. It doesn't really matter what, as long as something is on it.
The linear notes are also entertaining and interesting to hear from Mr. Tibet and his hallucinations during his hospital time after his food poisoning (I think that's what it was) incident.
Some infectious artwork, too.

Beautiful Piano concerto coupled with bland piano pieces.......2000-06-21

The "Yellow River Concerto" is a work of genious. Each movement describes the river with ease and clarity. The concerto opens with a sweeping view of the majestic river, followed by a cheerful description of the fisherman. It is interluded with a thoughtful tribute to the riches the river provides to the fisherman. The ode to the Yellow River is a beautiful track in ballad style. It is very peaceful with a tint of lament. The Yellow River in Wrath opens with the peaceful river and then follows to the river in storm, portrayed by heavy piano chords and excessive orchestration. Defend the Yellow River concludes the concerto with a triumphant battle and march scene to bring an end to this concerto illustrating the Yellow River, and ultimately Chinese river life. The short piano works that couple the concerto are rather uninspired and tasteless. A few of the works have their short moments but the rest of the short piano tracks end up being tiresome.
