Great Fiddling ... but.......2003-08-15

I've been a big fan of O'Connor for years, but I was somewhat disappointed in his concerto debut. The Fiddle Concerto displays a flash or two of O'Connor's genius, but overall I found it lacking. The first movement sounds like it might have been written by Aaron Copland, not that that's a bad thing. But a stronger composition might have been a bit more distinctive. The second movement presents a mournful theme that really doesn't seem to go anywhere. The third movement is reminiscent of the old Marlboro cigarette TV ads or a soundtrack from a 60s western. The highlight of this album in my opinion are the cadenzas and quartet compositions. Overall it's not a bad first effort for this genre. It's a great concept incorporating the fiddle style into classical composition, but I found The American Seasons a much more interesting and memorable composition.

And You Get Mark O'Conner's String Quartet Too.......2002-02-06

Much has been said in praise of the Fiddle Concerto in previous reviews. It is indeed a fine piece of music and I would concur with the accolades of other reviewers. Little has been said of the String Quartet that is also on this CD. Well, to me, it is about as good as music gets. While it gives deference to the tradition of the string quartet, with a big difference being that Edgar Meyer is on double bass, it is inventive, complex and totally satisfying. A sheer delight.

American Genius.......2001-07-20

This CD is the classical debut from one of America's greatest musical treasures of this generation. Mark has been a legend in bluegrass and acoustic music circles for years. His fiddle playing and prowess on pretty much all stringed instruments have been showcased to bluegrass and traditional music fans the world over for years. Now Mark has invaded the world of classical music, and has first CD is wonderful. Mark's playing is sheer joy and his melodic sense is delightful. A aual feast for the ears and the soul. His concerto is not as well composed as some of the classics, that that is more than compensated for with Mark's dead on playing and infectious energy. If Mark continues to mature in his compositional sense and keeps his bluegrass roots intact, we will have many more classic concertos coming from him. Buy this CD and rediscover passion in modern music.

Bluegrass Meets Mozart.......2000-10-07

This wonderful CD is an honest attempt to marry American bluegrass idom to classical music forms. The result manages to be both toe-tapping and extraordinarily rich; maybe Dvorak would have joined in with O'Connor if he were alive today and came back to Iowa. I can't recommend this highly enough.

Who says nobody writes listenable music anymore?.......2000-07-03

If Beethoven or Schumann had been able to make a trip to the new Republic and attend a few barn-raisin's and hoe-downs, they might have written something like Mark O'Connor's Fiddle Concerto. Bursting with joie d'vivre, the virtuostic composer/performer has given those of us starved for something new to listen to the benefit of his considerable talents. Though clearly less comfortable writing for the full orchestra than for his beloved fiddle, or for the string section, O'Connor nonetheless has done himself proud with those portions of the concerto that do make use of the rest of the orchestra. So much so that one wishes, despite the joys of listening to O'Connor strum solo, that he had lavished more time on writing orchestral counterpoint for his instrument of choice, as some of the solo sections cry out for a challenge from the woodwinds, or a bay from the brass. If anything, the string Quartet that rounds out the CD is even more skillfully put together.

This is Sarah Chang's second encore collection, recorded when she was all of 15. (The debut recital was made when she was 9.) As in the previous collection, and most of her other recordings, Chang stays mostly with the Romantic era, although she does play the March from Prokofiev's Love for Three Oranges with a good deal of bite. This disc doesn't offer a profound musical experience, but if you like to be amazed by dazzling violin playing, it's a treat throughout. Bravo to Chang for reviving showpieces like those by Bazzini and Sarasate. Charles Abramovic, whose name you have to search for, plays well but could be more assertive. --Leslie Gerber

...of these pieces...for some reason some of the recordings have a particularly dry sound -- "Hora staccato" and "Valse scherzo" sound like the bow was haired with sandpaper...much better performances can be found elsewhere -- look for Michael Rabin and, of course, Heifetz.

This album features mainly bravura showpieces and lyrical pieces. In the showpieces, Sarah Chang's virtuosity is second to none. Her flawless, electrifying accounts of Bazzini's Dance of the Goblins, Sarasate's Tarantella and Zapateado, etc., are very likely the best ever. In contrast to the dazzlers, she makes listeners realize her remarkable versatility when she sings most winsomely in the lyrical pieces, with a spellbinding tone. Two seldom recorded pieces, Mendelssohn's On Wings of Song and Sibelius's Nocturne, are simply mesmerizing.

In conclusion, this disc contains many familiar encore pieces as well as some lesser-known ones. Miss Chang breathes invigorating new air into the well-known pieces, and makes obscure pieces sound equally compelling. Every track on this CD is a gem. Sarah Chang demonstrates (as usual) her peerless, stupefying technical mastery, which is well blended with her marvelous tone and mature musicianship. IMHO, this is probably Miss Chang's finest disc so far. A CD to treasure!

Good - But Pet Music is Better.......2004-01-23

My collie Damian loves music so I am a fan of the concept of music for pets. I recently purchased every title in Amazon related to pets. They are all very good attempts at soothing dogs (and cats too I guess!). Hands down - or PAWS Down - PET MUSIC - a 3CD set - is the very best.

Just in case you thought Nigel Kennedy--fresh from his Hendrix tribute album--had left the classical music repertoire for good, think again. On Classic Kennedy, the fiddler is situated with the English Chamber Orchestra in a program that spans from Bach to Satie. (Yes, you also get a Joni Mitchell tune; "Scarborough Fair"; and the fiddler's own forgettable "Melody in the Wind," too.) The sequencing is a bit disjointed--the summer storm from The Four Seasons is followed by Massenet's blissful "Meditation" from Thaïs--and Kennedy's performances range from good to fair. The English Chamber Orchestra does an admirable job on these diverse works (it deserves a lot of credit here), but it'll be up to the listener to decide whether he or she wants to hear "Air on the G String" followed by Kennedy's version of "Danny Boy." As with most Kennedy discs, you'll either love it or hate it. --Jason Verlinde

Romantic-Styled Playing.......2005-07-25

I came to love classical music through classical crossover, but have dumped crossover after listening to artists like Perlman and Hahn. So was very apprehensive going back to a “crossover” artist.

After a minute into his interpretation of Vivaldi’s third movement of Summer, I was hooked. Although Nigel may not play the pieces in a way that is considered “proper”, he brings his own style which is intense and highly emotional. The sound he can extract from his violin is engaging, and I always feel as if his violin is singing/crying to me. I’ve also heard several versions of “The Flight of the Bumble-Bee”, but this version just makes me giggle.

The only weakness for me is the mixing of main stream classical music. Songs such as the traditional songs like Scarborough Fair (a great song) and the Joni Mitchell song seem out of place. Perhaps it was EMI’s goal to show Nigel’s approach to different styles of music, but "this mixing things up" personally doesn’t work for me.

If you like the classical music on this CD, also pick up his Vivaldi CD’s which are fantastic. And if you like the traditional stuff, then get his “East to East” CD.

The beauty as it is.......2003-03-06

On a scale of love-hate, I love this CD. No: I -L-O-V-E- it. That is a masterpiece in itself. I'm neither violinist nor classical musician, not even very experienced classical listener - though I enjoy "Der Ring des Nibelungen" much deeper than "Love Me Tender". What strikes me in Nigel's playing, and on this album particularly, is his incredible technical brilliance. When he plays a note it is always THE NOTE he's meant to play. Not a 1/16 tone mistake, not a 1/10 millimeter shift. Few singers are capable of such exactness, much less violin players. With a brush like this, you can paint whatever picture you want. And the pictures of Nigel's are just incredible. The deepest of his feelings are portrayed in his music with such a delicacy and balance, and with great confidence. On to titles: my personal faves are Brahms, Chopin, Bach, Satie and Kroll's. "Banjo and Fiddle" is so ironic and courteous, "Zigeunerweisen" is heartbreaking, "Nocturne in C Sharp minor" makes you breathless of its sweet sadness. "Hungarian Dance 5" swept all other versions away: compared to Kennedy's brave, sharp, masculine, fiery rendition, any other version seems like glucose syrup compared to juicy meat. "Air on the G String" is so airy and transparent. And "Czardas" is probably the best thing I've ever heard in my life...

I had only heard Kennedy one other time and knew that this would be good, as it is. I'm not new to classical music and can say that Kennedy's playing is clear and beautiful. I don't know why others have such a hard time with it, but if it's talented and artistic violin music that you're looking for then this is for you...

An Interesting Concept, A Failed Production.......2002-09-07

A while back I had heard about a British violin soloist named Nigel Kennedy, who was working on transcribing songs by Jimi Hendrix for the violin. I had altogether forgotten his name until my friend lent me a copy of Kennedy's 1999 release 'Classical Kennedy', and when I saw the pictures of him with his Morrisey haircut, stubbly facial hair, and his leather jacket, I recognized this controversial figure, the so-called "Bad Boy" of classical music.

'Classical Kennedy' is an exploration of the violin not as the solo voice of a gargantuan half-hour concerto but, rather, the lead voice in a three to five-minute song, and it explores this concept from Bach to Joni Mitchell. Right away this poses a serious undertaking- it is difficult to achieve continuity in a classical album that practically spans the history of Western art music. However, this conflict is partly resolved by the consistency of the tracks' lengths.

Kennedy has a distinct sound, and his little "trick" is that he sometimes plays really hard and really fast. He occasionally draws an elegant and pure tone that listeners expect from a great soloist, but he also has the tendency to turn a beautiful phrase into a crude and apathetic statement. These days the idea of a violinist who isn't utterly predictable, and is willing to take liberties with the repertoire, is a pleasant muse, but Nigel Kennedy is certainly not the ideal solution.

Kennedy's gimmick becomes his fatal flaw- in classical music, the notes speak for themselves. He makes Bach and Brahms sound hoarse and nasal. Ask any professional violinist and they'll tell you that, though there isn't one exact way to play any piece, there are limits on what one should do with a phrase, and that rule is implicit through understanding the composition. It's a hard truth to face, and perhaps only a trained musician fully understands this phenomenon. Either way, there needs to be an intimacy between the performer and the listener. All in all, Kennedy's technique caves in on itself. He plays as if taking great liberties at every turn were in itself a good thing. He cuts off a note that should sing, his sense of tempo is awkward at best- he seems to be driven by self-indulgent whims rather than musical passion.

There are points in the album where I think that his approach does utter disservice to the piece. For example, his interpretation of Massenet's 'Meditations' simply does not compare to Itzhak Perlman's flawless, dramatic performance on 'A La Carte'. Kennedy's Chopin 'Nocturne in C#' (which really sounds better with just a piano) doesn't at all capture the emotion and power of Sarah Chang's performance on 'Sweet Sorrow'. I'm not saying that every single track on this album is a loser. But where he fails miserably in some regards is that his playing strays into avant-garde quirks, and it becomes somewhat ignorant to the music in the piece. Ivry Gitlis quoted in the DVD 'The Art of Violin' that 'of course it's an insult to music when somebody says 'that's the benchmark performance' or 'that's how it's supposed to be played''. But in a lot of classical works, the personality and individuality of the performer lay in the subtleties of the performance, not in urinating on the very things that made the piece wonderful and then hoping that the listener will somehow connect with it.

Long sought-after and hoarded by collectors, this small but potent legacy is gorgeously restored from the original master tapes. A selection of encore-type miniatures by Sarasate, Wieniawski, Dvorák, Kreisler, Engel, and others reveal the teenage prodigy already in possession of the flawless technique, bang-on intonation, and coiled intensity we know from his fiery Capitol/EMI output. He digs into 11 of the Paganini caprices (Op. 1) with unflappable assurance. The lyrical selections betray a sweetness of expression quite different from the demonic aura permeating the 21-year-old violinist's 1958 traversal of the entire Op. 1 set. Filling out the disc are four delicious encores recorded in 1938 by Ossy Renardy, another short-lived violinist deserving wider attention on CD. Bach for professional listeners.......2006-01-30

What I found amazing about this boxset is the opportunity to enjoy Bach in complete form. From my point of view Passacaglia performed by Werner Jacob is a five star performance. Also BWV 593 and BWV 596 push up and show up no limits for the listener. This 16 CDs aggregate the perfect union between the artist, instrument, listener and Bach. And at the end of the day I can say that organ works can still be ... trendy. Enjoy!

Bach Organ Works on original organs.......2004-10-24

121 organ tracks or works on 16 CDs has to be spaced out in about six days. The music is so restful I found myself dowsing. The price for a new set through Amazon was right. Bach organ hymns made Luther.

Nice collection of violin pieces by Heifetz.
I wish they had used some filtering method while transfering Original Mono Recording into digital music in order to reduce/eliminate the background noise.
