Death Country.......2006-05-10
Death Country, that is the label pasted on this band, but if this is death country, then Mahler is Death Classic. This is a country band, but then a low and dark one. Especially the more up tempo songs like Second Sun and Wolfgang are worth listening to, although the banjo playing is a joy to listen to in every song. Really. Check it out!

If you like roots, alt-country, or bluegrass, this record is for you! Wonderful, pretty vocal melodies/harmonies with a slight edge to them. Foot stompin' good time! Music to drink whiskey by!

Good old fashioned talent.......2004-10-08
I loved this album from literally the first bars of the first track, Outlaws. I was acquainted with Luke only through his work on Sarah McLachlan's tours over the last 10 years. I picked up Aloha, Manitoba at one of Sarah's shows a couple of months ago, curious to hear Luke's own sound. It's fantastic.
The songs were all somehow familiar to me even though I'd never heard them before. Over time, I've realized that they sound familiar because Luke has perfectly captured the mood of particular genres of sound while making each song his own. "New York"'s music is jazzy and sounds like syncopated '60's to me. "Mitzi's" is bluegrassy; "Leroy" is straight blues; and "The Anxious Ballerina" is beautiful, sad music juxtaposed to bitingly funny lyrics.
If you appreciate talent, I highly recommend this album.
Thank you Canada!.......2003-10-22
I would like to thank Canada for another talented artist.
I was introduced to the music of Luke Doucet when he was filling in for Greg Keelor on the Blue Rodeo American Tour. They allowed him to open with a few songs from his solo album. I was a fan after the first song.
Luke is very talented on the guitar and his song writing skills are excellent. He produces a very unique sound. It is blues, rock, and alternative country mixed into one. There is something for everyone. I really love what he does with classic rhythms.
I would strongly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys Canadian rock. He is a strong newcomer in the genre.
I would also like the John Mayer, Josh Kelly, Jason Moraz fans to check out this album. Luke Doucet is a real musician. If you like the industry produced wannabes, you will be blown away by this guy.
Great Lyrics.......2003-02-14
Often, I find that music falls into one of two categories 1) that which has no lyrical value, while the voice is fantastic and 2) that which has awesome, thoughtful lyrics, with a less powerful voice to back them up. I value music in the second category much more than the ear candy of the first. True, the greatest music combines both categories into a super-breed of music, but that is incredibly rare. Aloha Manitoba proves that Luke Doucet can hold his own in this breed of music. Luke Doucet's lyrics are contemplative and brooding at times and overall fantastic. This CD is a great listen and well worth the $15.98 that is an atrocious sum to spend on most other music.
Great Solo Debut.......2001-07-02
Luke Doucet's solo debut is an engaging listen that, if it doesn't grab you immediately, certainly rewards subsequent spins. A great mix of alt-country, pop, and rock, I honestly can't recommend this album highly enough to those with at least a passing interest in the aforementioned styles. If you like this album, check out Luke's work with Veal (markedly different, but also great!)

Customer Reviews:
Takes his sweet time.......2007-02-15
After his first album blew me away like a warm august wind, I was avidly looking forward to his second album. At first I was underwhelmed, too sing-songish, but I had built up so much expectation. Slowly, as slow as the album moves, it grew on me, and I cannot go on a trip without it.
New-to-his-music folks should check out his first album, which is more dynamic, ranging from bluesy-gospel to alt-country.
His lyrics are poetic, both lulling and provocative. His instrumentation is like the third bowl of porridge, gripping but not overdone, and he never rushes his songs. Like a tall glass of water.
I love both his albums.
Smooth, Mellow Golden-Toned Alt Country.......2006-11-11
This album is a smooth mix of Alt Country goodness. It's a mellow album, with all the songs following the same mellow groove. You could almost call it chill country I guess! I have heard this guy compared to Ryan Adams and I think it's a fair comparison, but Ryan's music has a lot more life and vigor. I kind of wish the album would have a bit more varied song styles or be a bit more dynamic.
The sound quality is very good, it has a golden analog/tube sound that is very addictive (and suprising in a CD). The voice is very well-miked and the guitars play liquid gold. The achilles heel of the album though is the lack of dynamics, the instruments never really break through the polite mix, and the music never really takes off.

Excellent Debut.......2005-03-01
I recently heard Justin Rutledge's "A Letter to Heather" on a community radio station and ordered it after I couldn't find it in stores. I was drawn by his awesome voice, which is young and sweet and sad and weary.
This is a great album for many reasons. The production value is simple and clean. The instrumentation is spare, heavy on acoustic strings: dobro, banjo, guitar undergird the vocals and occasional piano. The lyrics are understated and true, drawn without pretense from the lexicon of roots music: equal parts Bible, booze, and heartbreak.
The only possible drawback is pace --- with the exception of the moderately raucous "The Suffering of Pepe O'Malley," the tracks are almost entirely spacy and slow. While at times sluggish, Rutledge is never self-indulgent (which is forgivable in an artist in his mid-twenties).
While I've heard comparisons with Gram Parsons, this CD reminds me of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska/Ghost of Tom Joad or Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks. Of course, these are lofty comparisons, but Rutledge has set a high standard for his future work.
