It is a perilous proposition when genres clash--and no such collaboration is more potentially fraught than when improvisation-trained folk musicians sit in with Western classical instrumentalists, who are taught to interpret a printed score. The renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma has devoted much of his professional life to such intercultural experiments. But the traditions of nations situated along the ancient Silk Road, which began in the Far East, meandered through Asia and terminated in Europe, are especially dear to him. These lushly arranged pieces range from moody scenic vistas to percussive Turkish hip-shakers and they make very pleasant listening. If they owe more to the European canon than the ethnic sources that inspired them, they are also the result of respectful give-and-take between a team of acknowledged masters. And nobody is more of a team player than Maestro Ma, an impassioned, fearless musical seeker and a gracious, deferential colleague. --Christina Roden

Customer Reviews:
delightful experience.......2007-07-04
this collection of music is quite a cultural experience. I've been hooked since I opened the cover!
Excellent Compilation with Marvelous Tracks.......2007-01-20
I enjoyed this compilation of Silk Road music very much. It delivers a nice, diverse sample of music from the region. My favorite track of the CD is Shikasta, but I like the others as well.
Beyond the first Silk Road CD.......2006-11-23
Yo-Yo Ma went beyond indeed. The first CD with Silk Road ensemble (When Strangers Meet) was inconsistent and somewhat experimental. This one however, is superb. As if in the 5 years the musicians got to know each other (but in truth, only a few musicians are the same). 23 traditional Eastern instruments are listed plus a number of western strings and other percussion was used. So the music on this CD gets my full attention, and as the title of first track suggests, you (can) get enchanted.
The tracks are ordered into three parts: Enchantments (1-5), Origins (6-9) and New Beginnings. First track is strangely familiar (like it was used in some film, but there is no mention of this). In third track this theme gets Chinese interpretation. The style from one track to the other changes, so you can't get bored or overexcited. Second is simply very nice, the fourth great intro of Armenian wind instrument duduk (played by famous Gevorg Dabaghyan), accompanied by percussion mostly, albeit the piece is short. 5 is gentle with cello and xun (Chinese ocarina), 6 orchestral from slow to cool, 7 again gentle with cello and vocal, 8 starts with yearning duduk and turns into orchestral battle, 9 cello and percussion. Track 10 is the only one with prominent vocal (love song) and introduces us to the last part of CD, which are more like jam sessions of all instruments. 11 and 13 are very lively. The last one, track 15, brings us a new interpretation of very ancient Chinese melody played on pipa.
Some would probably say this CD is commercialized. Personally I don't see any wrongdoings in this as long the music stays a high quality one. For the more authentic Silk Road one can always buy The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan.
Excelent!!!.......2006-01-15
One of the best concerts I attended in my life (so far... :-)...)
One of the Best !.......2005-12-06
This album has captured the soul of the Silkroad. There is not a single track in this album I don't like. I've been listening to it over and over and over again since I first got it. I think it's much better than the first one.

Album Description
"SOME ALBUMS WARN LISTENERS "do not operate heavy machinery while listening to this music." I'd take the "warning" beyond that. Do not sit upright nor stand because this music will dissolve you. "Indescribable" only starts to describe it .... It folds over itself, exudes, and disappears. But none of that put together adds up to the sublime mystery of what makes me go wherever it is that is beyond language, beyond memory, beyond explanation. Perhaps she's found the way to make time reverse. She has given us a remarkable gift: the carpet of sound to the "all-or-nothing." -Carol Wright, music writer for New Age Voice, BN.com
"THE OPENING MINUTES OF THIS ALBUM HERALD A QUALITY THE LIKES OF WHICH YOU WILL RARELY HEAR ON A SYNTH ALBUM. The first piece stops you in your tracks with its sheer, almost overwhelming beauty
for this is the sound of heaven - like never before. It really is almost overwhelming, one of the most beautiful musical experiences I think I've ever heard in this genre... There is a lot of music out there to be lived, but few that truly touch the soul - this is one of the few." - CD Services
"ALTERNATE AWARENESS - This deep space music is intended for meditation and introspection. The soundscapes just reach out and grab listeners. It becomes an alternate awareness that allows listeners to enter a trance-like state of being. Within that state, deep listeners see more clearly. The journey leads to increased spiritual and emotional well-being. Essential for new age and space music fans." ~ All Music Guide
"EXPANSIVE, tender, and passionately spiritual, Demby's music is designed for stress relief, contemplation, and serenity. Given Demby's multidimensional talents, it's no wonder her music is listened to all around the world." - New Age Retailer

Someone should have caught this..........2007-01-30
Anyone who knew Latin or bothered to check would know that the second word of the title has to be "sanctorum," NOT "sanctuorum"!!
Constance Demby is back........2004-06-26
It is wonderful to have Ms. Demby move away from the atonal and morbid sounds of Attunement and Spirit Trance to the uplifting sounds she gave us in Novus Magnificat and Set Free. This is definitely one of her best works.
Constance Demby: Sanctum Sanctuorum.......2003-03-13
Constance Demby continues her trademark melodious symphonic space-music in this calming album. This time, she has infused chants and solo choir to give it a definite Christian flavour.
It becomes a struggle to stay stressed out while listening to this inspiring album and I've tried.
A Musical Stairway To The Stars!.......2002-04-29
With this recording, Constance Demby, the undisputed founder of sacred symphonic space music, has created a musical stairway to the stars. In a word, 'Sanctum Sanctuorum' is remarkable. Not only musically sophisticated and gorgeously produced, the piece as a whole is a deepening of Demby's important work to new heights. At least initially, we could not help but to be reminded of the well-known Requiems by Faure and Durufle. But 'Sanctum' sets the standard for sacred symphonic space music for the new millennium reaching realms not possible prior to this work. Finally, electronic music technology has caught up with Demby's compositional genius to produce a benchmark that transcends the genre.
Peace and Tranquility.......2002-02-05
"Sanctum touches the inner peace we so often dare not to take time for during our schedules of work and obligations. The beautiful tones and colours are as deep and penetrating as the cover on the CD. Our world needs more of this positive, soothing music. A real must buy!"

Album Description
Originally composed for the video of the same name, the score is a 58 minute uninterrupted stream of serene, symphonic sacred music inspired by the vibration of the Christ energy. Intimate, contemplative, ambient, moving. Good for meditation or atmospheric uplift.
"It's been a while since we heard from one of the leading female synth musicians (actually so much more than just a synth musician) of the eighties and early nineties, whose album "Novus Magnificat" can lay claim to be one of the finest USA synth music albums of the eighties.
"Faces" is one near hour-long track of cosmic/space music distilled to its purest essence. It's the sort of music that crosses all the boundaries between dark and light without losing any listeners at either extreme end of the space music spectrum. Realised purely on synths and electronics, this is the sound of the universe calling as you are transfixed by something you don't understand and yet are in absolute awe if hearing. It needs no more than for you to buy it, play it and be spellbound, for that is surely what will happen." - Andy Garibaldi - CD Services
"Faces of the Christ captures the experience -- the wonder, the struggle, and the ecstacy -- of that very plain where spirit inhabits flesh and flesh grasps for eternity. Rich emotion pulls. Angel voices lure. Demby's music is the fisherman's net of this tantalizing predicament, and love is the glue that keeps one present. Listen deeply and don the face of Christ on your own being."- Carol Wright - Music writer

About Faces..........2001-11-14
Faces of the Christ is the soundtrack to a documentary entitled "Faces of the Christ." The music is pure Constance Demby. It has all of the qualities of her other CDs, --all of the qualities that propel her masterworks into the timeless realms of modern classics. This music is great for writing, painting, pondering... or just simply enjoying sunsets and moonrises. If you listen to Faces of the Christ, be prepared to delve deeper into yourself.

Album Description
"If you take time to listen to it as a whole piece, in one sitting, you will realise the majesty and grandeur, the feel and atmosphere, the playing and composing talent - in fact the very heart and soul - of a master musician at work. The opening track is one of the finest of her career to date, as the scene is set with glorious synths and textures flying all around, making you believe that there's a real group at work and not just one person, the clarity of sound and production, as on the other album, being second to none. "Absolution" is one of the most gorgeous such compositions you'll hear ... The rest of the album is both multi-layered, cohesive and consistent ...a sit-down, serious-listening affair, a voyage through space and time that's as good as it gets." -Andy Garibaldi - CD Services
"Attunement begins with the atmospheric "Bringing Down the Silence," a massive exhale, a cosmic benediction, and (with Connie's total-depth-vocals) a bodily engagement. "Strings of My Heart" is pure loveliness, a rhapsodic melody for harp and strings. "Out of the Mist" features a solo flute with drone, that later huffs up to a huge bagpipe band with bass drums, all echoing through the valleys of the mind, banging boldly on the heart. Very ennobling! The pivot of the album is "Fathoms," which features Connie playing the ten-foot sonic steel sculpture, which sounds like the roar of the universe. You will probably not hear such an all-encompassing sound work you over, ream you out, and massage every neuron. Once worn down, there's no escaping "Deep Mother" who works her raw sensuality and midwife-compassion through goddess-Connie's voice. The primordial vibes continue through the lizardy-firebreathing sounds of "Gabriel's Dragon." "Absolution," with its lead organ sound, is one of the most gorgeous such compositions you'll hear ... blissful music that would somehow strike a chord in your heart, something that stays with you and is re-awakened here. Attunement continues with symphonic stews of somber longing, glistening gleams of redemption, and triumphant clarion bells." -CWright and -Andy Garibaldi
Customer Reviews:
Two worlds of music.......2004-06-26
First I would like to say that I greatly admire Constance Demby's talent. However, if you are interested in buying her CDs, be aware that her music falls into two vastly different worlds. Novus Magnificat, Set Free, Aeterna, and Sanctum Sanctuorum are rich in harmony and very uplifting. Attunement, Spirit Trance, and Sacred Space Music are atonal and reminiscent of a waking nightmare. Unfortunately Amazon.com does not make much of her music available for listening so it is difficult for someone new to her music to be aware that the mood of her work varies greatly. I would love to have her compose more music along the lines of Set Free and Novus Magnificat.

Attunement....Demby's spontaneous "Masterpiece".......2001-11-22
Attunement is a true miracle... a live performance captured with a minumum of engineering and recorded in vivid, spectacular sound. Those expecting another Novus Magnificat or Aeterna need to open their ears to other vistas they may never have suspected existed. But in the lens of Demby's all-encompassing Camera Obscura, Attunement ranges from the raw, sensual cries of the Demby Earth Mother to the Bachian passages of organ and chorus. The textures are constantly changing, like the colors and fragrances of a secret garden. You round another corner and are greeted with an even more beautiful blossom than before....such is the power of Attunement. This CD demands careful listening and will ultimately prove to be Demby's masterpiece of spontaneous composition (spontaneous combustion??...it does smoke at times...the fire from the earth's inner core) A stunning CD that deserves the widest possible exposure!!

from -Alan Clancy, healer
"Heads don't roll - they open - in a Demby concert. Her concerts have a profound affect on me, not only for the beauty of the music, but for what remains in consciousness; it creates a temple of spirit like no other has ever done, pushing you beyond your capability to receive. You relax, reflect, twist to open, resist, then go. This procedure is more like an internal workout. The more you put into it the more it gives you. No other artist can reach this depth. I suggest you prepare beforehand your intention to change. You will be met. This is serious work. Your old spirit will unravel for days. Take the journey. It will be "the sound of your life!"
from - Mark Krueger, metaphysical astrologer
"This was not just a concert. It was an opportunity to ground the music of the spheres into planet Earth and the body Human. For on these concert dates, Dec 17-18, the Sun was at the center of our galaxy, a portal to Source. As Constance grounded the new vibrations through her music, we became the listening instrument for the collective body, the sympathetic strings of the Mother's Heart."
from - Dr. Baune, D.C., D.A.C.N.B.
"I am a physician and healer and, during the December concert, I literally watched myself facilitate a non-local healing of a young patient of mine who has deep seated emotional abuse issues. I had no intent to do this before the concert began. The music opened an intuitive part of me that knew where to go and what to do, and took me to the space where it all happened. Several days later, the patient had noticed a profound shift since that night. It expanded the forum of healing possibilities that I can now use. , and Constance's music is something you don't just hear or listen to, you experience it at the deepest level of your being. The harmonic vibrations that she brings forth are a profound gift to this planete."
from - - Cris Beaty, healer and counseler
"Experiencing Connie's Salon Concerts is being in a temple of profound effect and lasting meaning. For me - my body deeply relaxed, mind freed, emotions bubbled, light DNA activated, purpose reclarified, soul touched, chakas opened."
from - Scott, musician
" I sat down in the back yard to listen, and as I was enjoying
"Absolution," my favorite piece with the big organ, the wild peacocks that hang around my area came up to the back fence and stood there transfixed --all of us listening to this incredible music together under the light of the full moon. The peacocks finally left, but only after the album had finished playing."
from - - Viki King, consultant and author "I observed during the concert that Constance Demby's soundings have the capacity to awaken the higher strands of DNA in our bodies."
from - "Journeys to the Infinite"(FUN Radio Romania)
"I think Constance's work has never been better than on ATTUNEMENT"." This concert is from the other side of the Universe! ATTUNEMENT has all the qualities of a spiritual initiation"."I feel something unexplainable in my body and mind listening to this album. It's a sort of exorcism through music".
"The sound of the Space Bass scares me with his other-worldy beauty".

Es una aproximación al trabajo inicial de Demby. Para quienes la conocen, comparada con Bach, es un disco imprescindible como una aproximación a sus fases iniciales, y de manera sorprendente con un calidad inigualable desde el principio

the epitome of "smooth jazz".......2005-09-14
I have a somewhat biased opinion of this album as it was one of my first spyro gyra recordings. The first two tracks can be considered smooth jazz staples, this band really defined this genre of music. Jay Beckenstein is a master of the sax and his style is one of the most distinctive and copied sounds in smooth jazz today. He is the godfather of smooth jazz and having met him personally after a performance, I can say he is a true gentleman as well. Definitely worth a listen. This band has so much great material, you could listen for a few days without repetition. TRUE SMOOTH JAZZ. Highly recommended!
Alternating Currents!!!!!!!.......2004-08-29
This album is a real classic! From the period in the eighties when Spyro Gyra was at their height. After their big success, Morning Dance, Spyro Gyra prooved they could make more great music in the relm of great fusion jazz music. 1985, the group had been around, making records, for about seven years. Since their first album, Spyro Gyra, they have grown, and the music got better and better, but they were pretty well machured when they did come out, just at this time, they were even better. This album, starts off with the classic, Shakedown. A unique, shuffle, based swing. Great saxophone Jay Beckenstein! Alternating Currents, is a great piece. It is hardly a , "normal", song. Richie Morales, drums, delivers some nice grooves! Some other great songs, are PG, and Binky's Dream #5. If you like other classic Spyro Gyra from the 1980's, you'll absolutely love this compact disk!
great work by ol, jay.......2003-11-17
This is a super duper release by spy, every song is great. It is the only spyro gyra album that comes even near to Breakout.
A review of Spyro Gyra's Alternating Currents........2003-04-28
Alternating Currents is a fantastic Spyro Gyra cd. It was released in 1985. Right in the center of the climax of Spyro Gyra's career. Alternating Currents is part of my music collection, and I'm glad that I have it. This particular album would rank in my top 8 favorite Spyro Gyra cd's of all time.
Alternating Currents has an overall jazz rock/fusion sound to it. My top 3 favorite songs off of this cd would have to be tracks 1,2, and 9. Shakedown is an amazingly well done and put together song. It is, in my opinion, one of their best songs of all time. It has a very cool beat to it and I have listened to it countless times. Alternating Currents is a good song with fantastic guitar parts in it. Sunflurry is a nice, relaxing song. Tom Schuman does a great job on keyboards. All 9 songs on this album are great Spyro Gyra.
Overall, this is a terrific cd. It is well worth it to purchase it. This is classic Spyro Gyra. The cover art is even of a real hurricane! Thank you for taking the time and generosity to read my review.
A little different than before, but no less enjoyable!!.......2000-12-13
In this CD, Spyro Gyra has a new guitarist--Julio Fernandez replaces Chet Catallo. I cannot honestly say that I prefer one over the other, they just have a different style. The album starts off upbeat with the catchy and upbeat "Shakedown" and then proceeds into a somewhat raucous but still melodic title cut "Alternating Currents". We then slow down into "Taking the Plunge". Honestly, I could do without the scatterbrained "Binky's Dream No. 6" as this is nothing more than mildly amusing. And on no other piece is Julio Fernandez's talent more apparent than on the awesome guitar solo on "PG". Then we move back to the past a bit in "Heartbeat". And nobody can forget the ever hummable "Mardi Gras" after which we slow down into "I Believe in You", just to pick up the pace and end with the mood lifting "Sunflurry".
The group's style has changed somewhat here, but they're just as talented as ever at making good music!!

OUTSTANDING INTRODUCTION TO GEORGIAN POLOPHONY!.......2000-01-02
A Group of Musicians and vocalists preforms songs from all over Georgia. Not only is there a lot of culture involved but it sounds magical and ethereal with enough variety to keep things interesting. Don't worry if this CD sounds a little inconsistent at first because Ensemble Georgika improves with each listen. The styles range from upbeat work songs (tracks 1,3,4) to heavenly sounding Hymns (tracks 12-17) to love songs (Tracks 23,24) and a spine-tingling table song (track 6). Tracks (5, 22,and 25) are flute and sting instrumentals comparable to track 35 on the Golden Fleece (another Georgian CD.) While track 14 is found on Sacred and ritual music of Georgia several tracks can be fond on Georgian voices by the Rustavi Choir. Track 26, a historical song, is one of the most delectable tracks sounding somewhat like an English marabel with women and children singing along with the men.

Album Description
A vibrational sound attunement and healing journey through the chakras. Like a therapeutic bath, SONIC IMMERSION clears, attunes and heals the energy centers with sound, light and color. " I could feel the corresponding chakra vibrating as you went through each one." ..."...A powerful auric clearing. Took me deeply into the chakras to view my issues and fill them with light. Liberating and sublime!"
Recorded live at TOM KENYON'S Sound Healing Conference, this guided meditation is performed with the cosmic penetrating frequencies of the Sonic Steel Space Bass, a very powerful healing instrument. An original design of Constance Demby's, the Space Bass has been recorded by LUCAS SKYWALKER STUDIOS for their filmscores, and filmed by DISCOVERY CHANNEL. The low frequencies and long standing waves of the Space Bass (some 30 ft long), are potent and penetrating, and tend to break up old encrustations."...WHAT AN AMAZING INSTRUMENT!! I was healed by the SPACE BASS, but most important, I felt hope. I have the SONIC IMMERSION CD playing over and over, and I am now inspired to be all that I can be on this planet..."
"I felt altered and cleansed, renewed and deeply relaxed" .... "I arrived at the workshop with an irregular heartbeat, and left with a normal heartbeat"...."The Sonic Immersion touched, opened and cleansed my chakras at a level that is so deep it is usually unreachable in the third dimension. My chakras were expelling old gunk like seven oil wells gushing at the same time!".... "During the Sonic Immersion, I felt my heart open up, and energy from an endless supply poured from my heart."

Good Vibrations.......2006-03-02
Constance Demby's Sonic Immersion CD is a revelation. The first time I sat quietly to listen to the healing vibrations of her Space Bass I had an amazing experience. While she was producing these extraordinary sounds to align and heal the first Chakra I experienced a sudden, massive clearing, which manifested itself as palpitations of energy leaving the lower part of my back. I have never, ever experienced a release like that before. As the session progressed my jaw started to vibrate gently and only stopped when the sounds of the Space Base ceased. As with any stress release or clearing, thoughts will arise and there were plenty of those, which meant that the vibrations Constance Demby was creating were also having an effect at a much deeper level in my mind. To have an experience like this as a direct result of listening to the sounds of her Space Bass is a revelation to me. It proves the theory that the right sounds with intent can have transforming effects on our minds and bodies. I continued to experience further clearings throughout the following week and I have to say that my back is in a much better shape than it has been for years. Only recently, I had another major clearing while listening to the Sonic Immersion CD on headphones. I was sitting in my armchair with eyes closed, totally absorbed in the vibrations Constance was creating for the sixth or Brow Chakra, when I experienced a sudden explosion of white light followed instantly with a sharp release of pain from the temple by my left eye. I felt some pressure in this area for about 24 hours, as if a slow release of tension was still going on. Since then I have felt different, clearer, sharper and definitely less stressed. If you are looking for a way to clear deep-rooted stresses and boost your spiritual development then look no further, Constance Demby's Sonic Immersion CD is it.
Shake loose anything unwanted that still hangs on!.......2006-01-27
I use a lot of different cds in my meditation, yoga and inner explorations. I find the music of Constance Demby to be the best for connecting to the sacred cosmos while staying grounded in the here and now.
A much earlier cd, Opus Magnificat, is her best in my opinion. This cd, Sonic Immersion, is the first time that I've heard the Space Bass as the major instrument in Constance's work. If you can manage to actually feel the speakers vibrate while you meditate, you will have a memorable experience.
I've arranged it so my bed is connected physically to a sub-woofer speaker and I can actually feel the bed vibrate while I'm meditating. I imagine this to be almost as good as hearing the music live, but in the comfort of my home.
This cd treatment left me full of light and cosmically cleansed to a depth I have not felt before. Highest praises go to Ms. Demby for her incredible work!!
(Re-reviewed with apologies to Constance for my first review which was rated in error.)

great album.......2004-06-15
Macho was a big hit here in Mexico and this CD is hard to find here, but is better if you get The Best of Celi Bee: For The Love Of My Man. There's a song called I'M FREE that you can find on the cd The Best of Paris International Records from Hot Productions.
Does anyone know?.......2003-07-23
My favorite song by Celi Bee was in 1982. It was called I'M FREE....haven't seen it anywhere. I saw her perform it live at a bar in Florida in early 1984. Great cong!
NOT ENOUGH MACHO ( A REAL ONE ).......2001-03-21
Celi Bee was one of the most played singers at the disco scene of the middle 70's even though she did not reached mainstream status as, lets say, a Gloria Gaynor or a Vickie Sue Robinson. One of her best hits was "Macho(A Real,Real One)" which is the opening song for ALTERNATING CURRENTS. Sadly, the rest of the album lacks another smash like this one, nor any memorable song that could support the worthyness of this production. Even though "Disposable Love" is nice, it doesn't reach the level of importance of "Macho". Does this album stands on its own as a relic of the disco era and a good sample of Celi Bee's importance in the disco dancing period? Yes and No. "Macho" is essential for any collection, but you can always get "The Best Of Celi Bee: For The Love Of My Man" which not only has this song, but her greatest hit "Superman" along with "One Love" and "Fly Me On The Wings Of Love" [ and a buzzy bunch of other great Celi Bee songs ]. If you are a true Celi Bee fan, ALTERNATING CURRENTS is for you. But if you are not a fan, or just simply uninitiated on this disco diva, get her "Best Of" album.

Amazon.com essential recording
It makes a certain, perfect sense that pianist Bill Evans would eventually enlist a pair of former Lennie Tristano collaborators to enlarge his sound. Saxophonists Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh were students of Tristano from the early 1950s, each adapting their teacher's abstract phrasing and fondness for skewed tonalities. For his part, Evans was enough of a Tristano acolyte that when the latter took his Marsh-Konitz quintet to New York for a stint at the Half Note in 1959, he asked Evans to sub for him on teaching days (check out Konitz's Live at the Half Note for evidence of this stellar group). Fast forward to Cross-currents, recorded in 1977, and you have a near-facsimile of the Half Note band, and they sound crisp and fresh when tackling both standards and somewhat unlikely--though not atypical of the band's collective stylistic sense--tracks like Steve Swallow's "Eiderdown." Evans sounds warmer than usual, perhaps because Marsh and Konitz find so much room in the world of cool tonalities and long, untempered lines. Filled with yearning and a certain heat in the band's mutual discovery, this is one of Evans's best appearances with horns. --Andrew Bartlett

The Problem with Genius.......2001-02-17
The problem with genius is that if you give this album five stars, what do you give the Village Vanguard sessions with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian -- 500?
Because this is Bill Evans playing, friends, it's going to be worth five of anyone else's stars; but on his own terms -- and, frankly, and Konitz and Marsh's own terms -- it's a mediocre session that leaves this listener oddly unsettled. Konitz's astoundingly fertile lyricism sounds crimped by the arrangements here, and the horns are strangely unappealing-sounding. Evans' biographer believes that's because the horns are sharp and out of tune.
For this period in his career -- which is, alas, much less interesting than either the LaFaro or Chuck Israels periods, *or* the final trios with Marc Johnson -- Evans is giving it the old college try, playing a little brighter than he was in his by-then ruts with the otherwise fabulous Eddie Gomez. But I come away from this album depressed, rather than uplifted. Evans sounds like he's going through the motions with enthusiasm. I'd rather hear him on the terrifying edge of discovery.
Overlooked Gem.......2001-01-20
The Bill Evans lyrical quality and versatility gains added expression with Crosscurrents as Lee Konitz adds a dimension to the Evans melodic lines that only someone who was on Bill Evans' wavelength could have mastered. It is important that this was a release that Bill Evans wanted to release during his lifetime, and therefore must have appreciated the Evans-Konitz connection on the album. This also become obvious when you compare the difference between an album like Crosscurrents and the posthumous release of Evans and Stan Getz.
