No one gives them the love they need........2007-06-09
This was the second studio album of the Everly Brothers 1980s "comeback". It's a very good album, which should appeal to their fans.
3 1/2 Stars: Everlys' 2nd Album For Mercury.......2007-05-14
The Everlys 1985 follow-up to 'EB 84' is again produced by Dave Edmunds and features the remarkable Albert Lee on guitar. Highlights include great versions of Rank & File's "Amanda Ruth" and Dire Straits' "Why Worry." The title track proved that Don Everly hadn't lost his songwriting talent. It's a multi-leveled tale, utilizing the loss of love to create an autobiographical tale of being lost in art. "Arms of Mary" is strangely reminiscent of the duo's readings of the classic Boudleaux and Felice Bryant material that put them on the map in the late '50s. Again, the feelings of the past, lost love, and homesickness are the core here, and the Everlys do this modern-day tearjerker supreme justice. "Why Worry", written by Dire Straits' guiding light Mark Knopfler, is a bittersweet ballad that the Brothers sing beautifully. There is a hymn-like, almost gospel feel to the song, and it remains another example of the timeless impact of the group. Also covered are fine versions of Bob Dylan's "Abandoned Love" and Sam Cooke's classic "You Send Me." - All Music Guide

Product Description
In 1983, there was a great deal of buzz surrounding the Everly Brothers, who had not appeared together since their rather public breakup a decade earlier. A rapturously received reunion concert at Londons Royal Albert Hall set them on a path that would intersect with Mercury Records for three albums. On those three studio albums, the seminal twosome managed to update their trademark sound, while maintaining the qualities that had originally made them one of early rock 'n roll's most popular and influential acts.
On The Wings Of A Nightingale: The Complete Mercury Studio Recordings (1984 1988) captures all of the magic of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Famers during their reunion honeymoon.
Starting with EB 84, produced by longtime fan Dave Edmundswho had, in Rockpile, covered several Everly tunesthe Mercury era records brought Don and Phil's sound up to date while keeping the focus on their still-stirring voices. Paul McCartneywho had long acknowledged the Everlys formative influence on the Beatles sound contributed the buoyant On The Wings Of A Nightingale, kicks off EB 84 on an inspired note, and it became the Everly Brothers first Billboard chart single since 1967.
On 1986s Born Yesterday, again produced by Edmunds, the Everlys offer distinctive readings of such well-chosen cover tunes as Arms Of Mary, originally by Englands Sutherland Brothers, Bob Dylans Abandoned Love, Mark Knopflers Why Worry, and Sam Cookes standard You Send Me.
Don and Phil assumed the production reins for their third and final Mercury album, 1988s Some Hearts... Two classic sets of rock n roll harmonists meet on a version of the Beach Boys Don't Worry Baby, with the Beach Boys themselves guesting. The album sessions also produced an unreleased performance of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Jim Steinman composition A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste. It finally sees the light of day on this collection.
Customer Reviews:
Convenient.......2006-06-29
It's nice to have the 3 albums the Everly's made in the 1980s on a 2 disk set.
But the xtras (bonus tracks) are very few.
The compilers of this set put 2 albums on the first disk, and the 3rd album and one bonus track on the second disk, so it is considererably shorter. And since many think that the 3rd album was not all that great, it makes the second disk on this Hip-O collection rather weak.
A convenient package, but primarily for completists
essential music - should be more easily obtainable.......2005-11-27
This is some of the best pop music that's even been produced. I look forward to seeing this stuff back in-print, and reasonably priced.*
* I SHOULD note that Hip-O Select told me that this release comes in a special cardboard case. Oooooooo...

Two albums on one CD.......2001-11-16
Allan Clarke, lead singer of The Hollies for 30 years, ventured out on his own with a handful of solo albums in the 1970's. Clarke's always had one of the most recognizable voices in the pop/rock business (remember "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother"?), and this CD also shines with his unique vocals.
This release includes two full albums, originally recorded in 1978 and 1979, minus one (inferior) track. Both "I Wasn't Born Yesterday" and "Legendary Heroes" were cut in Los Angeles with some of the finest studio musicians around at the time, serving as a perfect, professional background for Allan Clarke's outstanding vocal abilities.
Personally, I've always liked the first album better, as the later release suffered from an overdose of rather awkward, edgy compositions (almost all of the tracks were written by Allan Clarke with Gary Benson). Occasionally HOLLIES fans will miss some of the magic harmonies here, but all in all this 19-track CD will provide for 70 minutes of timeless pop music. Personal favorites are "Hope" and "Shadow in the Street" from "I Wasn't Born..." as well as "Walls" from "Legendary Heroes".
A must-listen for Hollies fans and Allan Clarke fans.......1999-03-08
It took a couple of listens to fully appreciate this CD, but I find that I really enjoyed it after listening several times. Most of the songs are a departure from his work with The Hollies, and that may at first detract from your enjoyment of the CD, but listen without prejudice and you will find that the lyrics and the music are really good. I hope that anyone who wasn't sure whether or not to buy this CD will go ahead and get it; it will be well worth your while.

Awsome Music, Awsome Cover Art, Awsome Girl!.......2007-04-16
I LOVE everything about SAFIRE! From her debut to our recent phone conversation. This girl is pure and very real. Unlike other freestyle artists, Safire is NOT a fake. The way we communicate took my love for her to another level. Pure Respect!
A classic gem.......2006-12-25
Hip Hop and Latin Hip-Hop(A.K.A. Freestyle/Heart Throb)were born in NYC USA. Safire is one of the true singers that had a voice in the genre. Let's get serious here, to know talent is to have some man. She can sing. The songs reflect what we real Freestyle fans know and love this type of music since it's birth and hearing it blasting through our speakers wether it be at home or back in the days at the clubs. Grab her most recent album with "Bringing back the Groove". Support her & Freestyle!
a really tight freestyle album.......2006-09-21

"SAFIRE is better than a Sapphire".......2005-01-11
My freind recently ordered this for me from-hhmmm- another...oh never mind, anyways I love this sophomore offering from Safire. Actually, I bought this on cassette tape back in 1991 when I was still an impressionable 17 y/o teen. I didn't turn 18 'til Dec. Anyways, I first bought the 12" single of "Made Up My Mind" the 1st single released. In fact I just listened to it on my Spirit of Saint Louis Record player/stereo and it still sounds fabulous! By the way, it's a very attractive record- it's a beautiful blue. George LaMond and Cynthia sing backing vocals and also offered are several remixes of the song. If my memory serves me right , the second single was "Whatever Happens"(not too sure); the third single was "Somethings Never Change"- again w/ George LaMond singing backup and the fourth and final single was "Taste the Bass". For some reason, the last three singles weren't available at the stores where I was buying records. Maybe, there wasn't a strong demand for them- I don't know. I know I would've purchased them just to have them in my record collection.
This record shows growth in Safire- like she's graduated to another plateau. "Whatever Happens" is a tender ballet which I would've wanted to see become more successful on top 40 radio or adult contemporary. It was simply overlooked by everyone!
Safire's material is catchy, feel-good and memorable. Pop radio she have given her more of a chance after "Boy, I've Been Told" her biggest comercial success.
Safire: The singles
DON'T BREAK MY HEART 1986
LET ME BE THE ONE 1987
BOY, I'VE BEEN TOLD 1988

SOMETHINGS NEVER CHANGE 1991
I WASN'T BORN YESTERDAY Unrealsed
TASTE the BASS 1992

I hope I haven't forgotten something; so I appologize If I have. Peace- JULIUS ALLAN
*ERROR*- TONY MORAN sang backup vocals on "SOMETHINGS NEVER CHANGE" w/ SAFIRE -J.A.H
Impressive.......2004-07-16
This is a great effort from the Adult Comtemporary ballads "Whatever Happens" to Freestyle "I'm a Victim", "Mid Up My Mind", etc. to the Dance-Pop tunes "I Never Heard", "Taste the Bass", "I Wasn't Born Yesterday", etc. Safire shows alluring vocals throughtout and the production is really good. Highly recommended to any pop music lover.

80's Everly Bros. better than ever .......2007-04-04
In the mid 80's the Everly Bros. might have been thought just as another nostaglia act playing county fairs and trying to by. BUT! Everly Bros. 50's and 60's records influenced every one from Bob Dylan to Beatles to each two part harmony after. They were beloved, but somewhat forgotten until Paul McCartney wrote a minor '84 hit for them, "Wings of a Nightgale". That led to this underappreciated classic, "Born Yesterday". Produced by Jeff Lynne of ELO, the songs include covers of contempory writers and bands such as Dire Straits, choice songs by the likes of Bob Dylan and new ones written by themselves. Song selections fit Don and Phil like a iron fist in a velvet glove. The harmonies of Everly Bros. now have an older, wistful, longing and it sounds achingly bittersweet. Early 45s /LPs/ have that joy of the new and there are plenty of greatest hits compliations of EB, but this is their shinging glory..
and hardly any has heard it. As they sang.. "So Sad.."
