A great collection of klezmer favorites!.......2006-09-30
Premiere violinist Itzhak Perlman is joined live in concert by four premiere klezmer groups: Brave Old World, The Klezmatics, Andy Statman, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Vibrant, poignant and distinctly old-world, klezmer is the musical style that developed among Eastern European Jews. Featuring the soulful fire of violin, clarinet, accordion, mandolin and vocal leads, accompanied by cimbalom (a hammered-dulcimer), piano, drums. There are a few soulful slow tunes mixed in amongst the fiery dances, but most of the selections on "Live in the Fiddler's House" are fun and up tempo, full of the instrumental virtuosity one would expect both of this genre, and of a concert violinist of Itzhak Perlman caliber. Klezmer is some of the world's best good-time music, right up there with Irish jigs, Cajun two-steps and country banjo pickin'. But it's not all sweetness and light; inherent in the mournful, minor mode of this traditional music is blend of opposites--both the sorrow of persecution and defiant sense of fun-in-the-moment inherent of a culture displaced, trying to maintain its identity in an ever-changing and often hostile world. And therein lies klezmer's appeal to the soul. For more great Jewish music, try any of the separate releases by Brave Old World, The Klezmatics, Andy Statman and his band, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. You might also enjoy "The Hidden Gate: Jewish Music Around the World," the traditional Sephardic music of the group Voice of the Turtle, and the unplugged world fusion of Basya Schechter and Pharoah's Daughter in "Out of the Reeds."
Best Klezmer album.......2004-11-16
To me, this is the best klezmer album I've ever listened to (and I have quite a few). And it's a live album. Although it's a kind of live version of "In the Fiddler's House", the repertoire is not the same (they only share one or two songs). The bands accompanying Itzhak Perlman are at their best (they are the best klezmer performers!). I prefer, personally, Andy Statman's clarinet and mandolin (Andy's Ride and Meron Nign/In the Sukke are my favorites); then there are great moments with Brave Old World (Doina Naftule and A Hora mit Branfn are beautiful pieces) and the Klezmatics, of course. The 12 minute finale is an absolute well crafted medley, under Klezmer Conservatory Band's leader, Hankus Netsky. I did'n want it to end.
I don't like at all the women voices of Klezmer Conservatory Band, although the instrumental pieces (like Khosidl) are amazing.
There is not a second in this album which is not top klezmer.
This was a fun C.D........1999-01-16
For people who are into Klezmer music this is the finest C.D.! For Klezmer music lovers, this is a masterpiece.

Album Description
Hip enough for hipsters but nerdy enough for nerds, Freezepop are back with a new batch of songs that you won't be able to get out of your head. Their second full-length album, Fancy UltraFresh, builds upon the minimal electropop of their past releases, with an edgier, fuller sound. With songs ranging from the aggressively dancey "Parlez-Vous Freezepop?" to the hushed "Outer Space," to the cheeky and blippy "Stakeout," Freezepop have introduced new sonic elements to their repertoire, while remaining true to their catchy synthpop roots. Fancy UltraFresh, which also includes video and interactive multimedia content, will be released by the Archenemy Record Company on May 18. Formed in 1999, Freezepop is the union of Liz Enthusiasm vocalist/fashion plate), the Duke of Pannekoeken (programmer extraordinaire), and the Other Sean T. Drinkwater (synths/vocoder/wacky hijinks). All the Freezepop songs are programmed on a Yamaha QY-70, a handheld battery - powered sequencer. Their debut album, Freezepop Forever, was released domestically by Archenemy in 2001, and was licensed for worldwide release by Elefant, a Spanish indiepop label. The band have also released several EPs of new material as well as remixes by the Future Bible Heroes, Soviet, Stephan Groth (Apop/Fairlight Children), and more. Freezepop have songs featured in four Sony PlayStation2 video games, including araoke Revolution, Frequency, and A mplitude.

Freezepop: Fancy Ultra-Fresh (Archenemy, 2004).......2006-01-07
Following in the footsteps of Human League, Ladytron, and Kraftwerk, Freezepop is a blend of fanciful, energetic dance pop mixed with songs that are more on the serious side. About half the songs on this album are fun filled tunes, while the other half are darker, more intricate pieces. In fact, I find this disc to be kind of schizophrenic, but, in many ways, I like it because it is so two sided. The band consists of front lady Liz Enthusiasm, the Duke of Pannekoeken, and the other Sean T. Drinkwater. Yes, probably not their real names, but their names seem to fit the playfulness of their songs. Also, I am always fascinated with electronic bands that become attached to one sequencer or keyboard and stick with it, trying to make it do what they want. Freezepop programs all their songs on a Yamaha QY-70 to great effect.
Fancy Ultra-Fresh begins with a tongue-and-cheek stalker song called "Stakeout". Liz states in here monotone voice over pulsing drums that she likes the boy who works in the indie-record store. Included on the disc is a video of the song. It's a catchy tune that will have you dancing in your living room. It's a fast tempo song that reminds me of an electronic version of Marine Research or Heavenly. "Bike Thief" comes next. After the first two songs, the listener begins to get the impression that Freezepop is into crime or some sort of mental disturbance. No worries though, the album does change after the Kleptomaniac song "Bike Thief" and the stalker song "Stakeout." "Bike Theif" is more of an industrial song with distorted vocals at points. It has a robotic chorus and the appearance of those Marine Research style vocals make an appearance as well. "I am not Your Gameboy" begins and ends with a sample from many people's childhood memories: Speak and Spell. This is Liz's theme to the boys about her being a human being and not a plaything.
"Parlez-Vous Freezepop" displays one of Liz's other talents: French. The French syllabification works great on this song with the electronic music. This is a medium-tempo song that is up-beat, but, frankly, I couldn't tell you what she is saying. "Outer Space" is probably one of my favorite songs on the disc. This is a more atmospheric song with spacey keys and simple drums. It's a song about solitude and is definitely their strongest showing on the disc. "Duct Tape My Heart" is a playful, yet serious song about Liz's feelings. This is typical love song, but it does fall into the darker side of their disc, which I like. "Manipulate (Mastermind Mix)" really reminds me of a cross between Ladytron and the Human League. The song structure of this song, "Duct Tape" and "Outer Space" are fantastic. I hope to see a darker album along this line in the future. "Emotions and Photons" is also a great song that recalls all the good things about 80's electronic pop.
All in all, this disc is solid. The production is stellar and the songs are strong contributions to the genre. If you love to dance or love bands like Ladytron, this certainly is a band for you. Give Freezepop a try and you will be in for a tasty treat.
I'm so sorry I bought this........2005-12-02
STOP!! Before you go and spend your well-earned money, think twice. Freezepop is funny, bubbley, and sort-of catchy at first, but trust me, it gets old very quickly. I bought it used for something like 5 or 6 bucks and I still lament the purchase. I don't even like seeing it while flipping through my cd book. What a piece of trash.

Perfect album! Another classic lost in the 80s!.......2007-07-02
Fun Fun is Italo disco at it's very best. The first half of the CD is all Italo disco tracks, while the last few are Italo House. "Living In Japan" and "Color My Love" are my favorite tracks. The cover of "Give Me Your Love" is really cute and upbeat as well. Every time I listen to this CD, I feel wonderful all over. Listening to this CD is like being a kid and eating lots of Jellybeans. Italo disco is the best music of the 80s in my opinion. This CD is gold! Great CD for those looking for a little more than the mainstream 80s dance songs you hear on the radio constantly.
This is true producer based italo!.......2007-02-25
I've been a huge fan of Italo (disco) for over 20 year now. Although most people I know find it "superficial", "simple" or even "dumb", the true italo lover knows better... We know Fun Fun is not about the two or three girls that are singing, it is about the producers Dario Raimundi and Alvaro Ugolini. I love the electronic bass line, the bells, the high hats, the intros, the break downs etc. This "Best of" is , as it contains only 12" versions, a collector's item. The Cd cover states that they used the Original Master tapes, but I'm not sure if that's really true: during the intro of Happpy Station it's seems that I hear the record playing...
The only minor point of this CD is the absense of the original version of Happy Station, it now contains the Ben Liebrand scratch version. Fortunately, Ben has included it in master quality on his Grand 12"s version 3: [...]
That original version of Happy Station is really magnificent!
Buy it and have fun!

Fun! Full of energy!.......2003-07-11
This cd is one of my favorites!I have really enjoyed Fun Fun since hearing them in the late 80's.A lot of fans of the songs, "Color My Love" and "Happy Station" didn't know too much about the group. They started in 1983 with singers, Roberta, Natalie and Spagna. After the release of "Color My Love", Roberta left the group. Roberta can be seen in the video, "Papa Don't Preach" by Madonna. Spagna went on to do solo work and was replaced with Eleena. Spagna continued doing backing vocals in the songs, Give Me Your Love" and "Give Some Loving".Fun Fun's music is known world-wide. Their most popular crowd was from Japan. The Best of Fun Fun is full of fun and energy. this cd is one to get if you enjoy non-stop dance music.
GET THIS CD IF YOU LIKE QUALITY HI-NRG!!.......2001-09-21
buy this cd, and add it to the classic HI-NRG collection!!
Fun Fun is one of the best hi-nrg groups that put out quality hits!!" baila bolero","capital girl","color my love","give me your love" all packed the dance floors at the disco! the new music is not the same as it was in the EIGHTIES, today most of the music is cheezy, with cheezy beats....back in the EIGHTIES groups were pioneering, today groups are BITING! even in 2001 this FUN FUN cd is great to party too.........

My 3 year old son LOVES this CD; the kid's in his daycare room dance around w/ such joy, especially to "Barbie Girl" and the "Electric Slide" Songs. This CD is very popular w/ the pre-schoolers!
Dj's Choice Kids' Party Fun CD music & Vocal stylequality.......2003-02-22
I bought this CD...near me to have a fresh copy of the song which I already had on a cassette by...My daughter wanted it for a talent show at her school. The vocals on the new CD were not at all like her cassette, and we were very disappointed in the lessened upbeat feeling from this version. The other music on this CD was okay, except for the first song, which I personally didn't care for at all. Had I known the lack of quality in this version, I never would have purchased it!
Not the original artists.......2003-02-13
I bought this thinking the songs were recorded by the original artists. They are not, done by some band called the Hit Crew. Get Greatest Hits of the 50s (Box Set) instead. It has the original recordings, including Witch Doctor.

More comedy monologue than musical performance, Bea Arthur's one-woman show Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends collects memories from the silver-haired star's life on Broadway (Fiddler on the Roof, Mame, The Threepenny Opera) and television (Maude, The Golden Girls).
"I wanted to see if I had the guts to just come and be myself," Arthur says in this performance recorded in front of a live audience in December 2001. Alongside co-creator and pianist Billy Goldenberg, she offers wry and often funny anecdotes about her career and the people she's worked with (Angela Lansbury, Pia Zadora). When she does sing ... well, even decades ago Arthur didn't have a beautiful voice, but she's well-suited to the comedy songs. And her versions of Kurt Weill's "Pirate Jenny" and Goldenberg's own "Fifty Percent"--while they won't make anyone forget Lotte Lenya or Dorothy Loudon--are effective in their own right. Bea Arthur on Broadway is definitely more Bea than Broadway, but it's a career well worth remembering. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
And Then There's BEA!.......2007-01-20
Thank goodness this is available on CD. I saw the show twice in Manhattan and once in P-town MA. She is an American treasure. What's nice is that you don't need to have had seen the live performance to enjoy this CD. (Though I'd love to have it on DVD.) Just Bea, Billy, a piano and yet so much more!!!!!
Golden Girl Shines Brightly.......2005-10-21
For anyone who has ever laughed as Bea Arthur deftly put people in their place with her lightning quick wit as Dorothy on the "Golden Girls", they will not be disappointed with this CD. Arthur, some 9 years after leaving the small screen, returns triumphantly to her professional roots, the stage, and does not disappoint. Mixing antedotal stories with classic songs, all to the accompianment of Billy Goldenburg, Arthur weaves her life in a brillant 90 minute tapestry so that the listener regrets ever reaching the end. Anyone who has ever seen Arthur perform on stage, or as Maude or Dorothy, they will not regret purchasing this CD. For that rare minority of people who have not have the privilage of seeing Arthur previously should find out what they have been missing of this American icon.
Alive and Unforgettable.......2004-11-21
Bea Arthur. Nearing 80. And yet, her continuing vitality is blatantly obvious in this live recording. I will tell you this--I bought this disc with no expectations whatsoever. I like Golden Girls as much as the next chap, and I was slightly curious about what Bea had become.
The simple truth was that I was stunned. Completely stunned. Again, this sounds as the same, alive, malicious woman who portrayed those "affirmative women" on TV (per her own words). She mocks her own voice, recalling the humiliation of being mistaken for the man of the house through the phone ... and some--who buy this disk with the intent of getting a faultless musical performance--might agree (and according to some reviews her, HAVE agreed) that her voice is perhaps too deep, too cutting, not pure enough. But this is NOT (and I stress it) a musical performance per se, it is not a perfectly rounded voice singing perfect standards.
What this disc is? A drama performance. The songs are intermissed with speech interludes, during which Bea narrates anecdotes from her past experience as an actress--and that's is PRECISELY what is MAGIC. You feel as though she's inviting you to witness the high points of her life, and it's a very nice place. The songs, seem alive as rarely before, because they are performed. She renders them with life, and make the most of her abilities.
I really appreciated some of the smaller things. You get to recognize her trademark, slightly embarassed, `You know' ... She'll make you laugh with good natured reminiscence ("A Mother's Ingenuity"!); some of the songs are delightfully imperfect, (I learned to love the half-sung/half-spoken "What Do You Start" ...), some others are wonderfully dynamic ("What Can You Get a Nudist For Her Birthday?", "Threepenny Opera/Pirate Jenny" ...), but all are very enjoyable ...
Be it "Isn't He Adorable?" or "If I Can't Sell It, I'll Keep Sittin' on It" ... every track on this disc will have you fondly reminisce or curiously discover the career of one helluva woman.
You really can't be disappointed. I promise.
If only we could have a visual as well!
A trip down memory lane..........2003-10-19
Bea Arthur, one of the finest performers of her time.
Bea is most known for her role on the sitcoms Golden Girls and Maude, but she's done so much theater work as well.
She was in the cast of the original U.S production of "Threepenny Opera" starring Lotta Lenya, and in the original cast of "Fiddler On The Roof" and "Mame". But Bea started her theater career in a show called "The Shoestring Revue".
Bea stoled the scene every night when she performed as yente the Matcmaker on "Fiddler On The Roof" and she also got a hole lot of response as Vera Charles on "Mame", starring Angela Lansbury. In this live performence Bea performs a collection of songs chosen by herself, such as, "Let's Face The Music And Dance", "Isn't He Adorable", "Fifty Percent" and her theme song from Mame "The Man In The Moon". Bea is absolutely one of our time finest performers, with her witty sence of knowledge and her indefiable voice she has establised herself as a broadway legend, alongside Judy Garland, Elaine Stritch, Mary Martin. She is one of the last broadway female legends alive. And still going strong, Bea is rounding 80, but you wouldn't notice.
Do yourself a favour and take a trip down down memory lane, it's your chance to hang out with the last female broadway legend around.
A Truly Remarkable Accomplishment.......2003-06-16
As a huge fan of Bea Arthur's, I was very excited when I heard she would return to Broadway to do a one-woman show. Not since winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for "Mame" has Bea Arthur been on stage. Well, what a way to follow up! This cd (which was recorded during a live performance) Bea gives fans an intimate look into her show business life. The stories are very funny and touching, and the songs (which Bea picked out herself) are fun, beautiful, and magical. A favorite part of this cd for me, is when Bea talks about her days on TV. She was the star of two very successful and groundbreaking sitcoms, "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" I am a huge fan of "The Golden Girls" and Bea's character Dorothy was always my favorite. This cd is a must for any Bea Arthur fan, but the appeal of this amazing show goes beyond her hardcore fans. Any fan of classic Broadway and cabaret songs will love this cd. This is one of the favorite cds I own, and should be treasured by more people. And finally, as a sidenote, Bea's one-woman show was nominated for a Tony Award in 2001 in the category of Best Special Theatrical Event.

THIS is what we can call a great eurodance CD !!!.......2004-02-25
WOW !! This CD amazes me !! I LOVE IT !!! It's a must have for everyone who likes eurodance !! NO ONE will regret it. Fun Factory is definately one of the best eurodance bands ! Why not review everything and rate it ?
1. Celebration : A euro-reggae track, quite catchy, enjoyable and danceable. (3.5/5)
2. Don't Go Away : Similar to the previous track. I also can say that it's even better !! You'll like it, sure. (4/5)
3. Doh Wah Diddy : A great cover !!! A dance song. I haven't listened to the original, but I really enjoy this cover !! Similar to "Shimmy Shake" by 740 Boyz, I don't know how to call this but I like it very much ! (4.5/5)
4. I Wanna Be With U : Similar to "Don't Go Away" and "Celebration". Same thing : catchy euro-reggae track. (4/5)
5. I Love You : A ballad. This word means everything : horrible, slow, boring. Should never have been on this CD, and should never have been released as a single. (0/5)
6. Pain : After a horrible track, here comes a GREAT track !! Fast dance song, very good melody. Great, I LOVE IT ! (5/5)
7. Close To You : Without a doubt THE BEST TRACK ON THIS CD !!! Another great dance song, maybe you know it. This is the Trouble Mix, which is MUCH MUCH better than the radio mix. I LOVE IT TOO ! (5+/5)
8. Oh Yeah Yeah : This is maybe euro-reggae, but it has a dance beat. It's the best euro-reggae track on this CD. Very good !! (4.5/5)
9. Prove Your Love : GREAT !!! Another great dance song by this band. I LOVE IT, it's fast, amazing, what more can I say ? (5/5)
10. Love Of My Life : Nice euro-reggae track. Similar to "Don't Go Away", you'll like it if you like the other euro-reggae tracks on this CD. (4/5)
11. Groove Me : Another great dance song. It's one of their first singles, and I really enjoy this one ! This track is perhaps not the best of the CD, but it has much energy and it's excellent. (5/5)
12. Take Your Chance : A nice dance track, it's not my favourite but very good and enjoyable. (4.5/5)
13. Fun Factory's Theme : This is what we can call "eurotechno". It's not really dance, it's instrumental. It's quite enjoyable. (4/5)
14. We Are The World : The last track, similar to "Take Your Chance" : nice dance track that you will enjoy surely. (4.5/5)
Overall a great CD that you will enjoy if you like Eurodance, and also euro-reggae. It's worth the buy, give it a try !!!
Great 90's German EuroDance, Techno and Pop.......2004-02-16
This is a very nice collection of the best songs by this German Dance/Pop group, that I used to listen to a lot in the 90's. I think they only released 2 albums in the 90's, before putting this Greatest Hits collection, so it contains most of the songs form both of their albums.
Lyrics are very Simplistic, but whatever the lyrics miss, Melody Hooks compensate for. And melody hooks are Amazing, very Catchy tunes. I used to listen to them a lot in the mid 90's and still enjoy a listen (they had some of the best music back then), it all brings back many memories.
The songs have a female Singer with a Powerful Voice (Marie Annet), and great Rappers (Tony D and Smooth T). The Musical Genius/Composers behind this project were Toni Cottura and Bulent Aris. By the way, Aris and Cottura wrote a song for Backstreet Boys called "Get Down (You're the one for Me)" and Smooth T of Fun Factory was a guest rapper on that song (it was featured on BSB's first US album). Fun Factory also performed with BSB in Germany, before BSB hit it big in USA.
Aris/Cottura wrote all the songs on this Album, except the Horrible Cover "Doh Wah Diddy Diddy". This song is Horrible, and Fun Factory's cover did not help it. IMO Bad Choice of a Cover.
All other songs are Great and Original compositions . They range between:
Fast Eurodance/Techno with Male rap and Female Vocals (These are my Favorites):
"Pain" - Very Fast track, very catchy
"Take Your Chance" - Great Fast track, LOVE IT!!!
"Close to You" - Very Romantic and Fast EuroDance song. LOVE IT!
"Prove Your Love" - a Great Fast, Galloping, and Uplifting Song
"Groove Me" - also very fast and Energetic, with Hooky Melody
"We are the World" - Can't help but move to this.
"Fun Factory's theme" - an Instrumental EuroTechno track, Nice
Now there are also some nice Pop/Reggae songs, they are Dance, but Not very Fast. All Very catchy. These are:
"Celebration"
"I Wanna B with You"
"Love of My Life"
"Don't Go Away"
"Oh Yeah Yeah"
Now the CD also has One Beautiful Love Ballad, Very Slow, and very Romantic. It's called "I Love You", it has a Great Chorus, and a Slow Male Rap. Great Great Great song.
This is a Great CD to have if you like Dance, Techno, or Quality and Clean Rap music (Awesome Rap here). Or if you simply want to listen to Catchy and Upbeat Pop songs. whatever you like, this CD will definitely touch you in some way or other.
Thank You Very Much, and I hope you Enjoy this CD, and have Fun :)
Dancefloor Classix.......2003-07-15
Although you can find various original/remixed Fun Factory cuts on every serious dance/d.j. compilation from the mid-90s, this compilation cuts through the hassle and gives the buyer exactly what he/she is looking for.
"Close To You", "Pain", "I Wanna Dance With U" became their main staples, and anybody who loves the days of anthemic techno gone by will need to own these as well as Real McCoy's "Another Night" album.
Featuring their best song.........2003-07-01
..."I Wanna B With U" is a very fun song you can dance to. I love that they had Marie-Anett as the main vocals of the song. Rod D., Smooth T, and Steve along with Marie-Anett make a great combination when it comes to great dance music.
Fun Factory really are fun!.......1999-11-09
I like Fun Factory mainly because they combine rap, singing, and techno music all into one. This is a great combination for dance music fans. People who like this album should buy 2 Unlimited, Vengaboys, and La Bouche.

EXQUISITE ! DELIGHTFUL !.......2006-01-22
What a wonderful collection of excellently performed and acoustically marvelous music -- rousing, contemplative, romantic, cheery - some of which were the long-remembered and not-often-heard-now favorite songs of my childhood and youth.
Make sure you read the enclosure that is tucked away into the front cover of this CD -- written in 3 languages, it proides little-known informatin about some of these wonderful tunes and their composers, and the illustrations throught the booklet are also a very nice touch.
Listening to this CD can be an intoxicating experience - what delightful selections all on one CD! From Gershwin to Gould, from Anderson to Sousa and more - a lovely Broadway tune (from Carousel), and the old familiar Arkansas Traveler as well, (and even a little barking and whistling on "The Whistler and His Dog"!) this eclectic collection of pieces was artfully and unforgettably performed, much to my great enjoyment. Although this was the first time I ever heard the New London Orchestra perform, you can be sure that now I will look for other recordings of theirs. I also plan to buy another copy so I can play it in my cubicle (quietly when at work, but LOUDER when I am by myself -- hee hee!!).
What more can I say? I love this CD with its remarkable collection of songs!!!
Good for all collections.......2000-12-09
Well, here is an English orchestra recording pieces that some American orchestra should have done long ago. This is music to have fun with and much to my delight was a piece that I have only heard on a 10 inch LP. That is Sym 5 1/2 by Don Gillis. This is one of the best light pieces written in the 20th Century by an American, but sadly little performed. Buy it just for the Gillis piece and consider all the others as frosting on the cake. Take a break from Wagner and Glass and get this one and the three CD's of British Light Music. Just enjoy. Aloha..
A Disc that is a good time all by itself!.......1999-05-17
This recording is the kind that some American "Pops" Orchestras should be making. Most of these light classics are ones that the Boston Pops have recorded before, but I don't think have been done as well as Mr. Corp and the New London Orch., have done them. This disc is a real treat and I hope just the first of many. We as Americans need to rediscover our musical works.
An excellent compilation of light American classics.......1998-12-09
British composers are well known for writing for the "Proms" concerts that feature light symphonic fare. There is much less American music in the same vein as Eric Coates, Edward German and Ronald Quilter, but conductor Ronald Corp has unearthed some real treasures on this disc of mostly short, light pieces. Amazon's listing doesn't include two of the best selections on the disc, Richard Rogers' Carousel Waltz and Don Gillis entertaining Symphony 5 1/2, subtitled "Symphony for Fun." It's a real crowd pleaser, and the fine sound on the recording is a good match for the entertaining repertoire.

Not as good as "Samantha Fox" but probably better than most anything else that she did.......2006-10-23
The 3rd album by the super-sexy but not overly suggestive Samantha Fox (born 4-15-66) has many fine moments as well as her most commercially successful song "I Wanna Have Some Fun" (the only one to hit the Top 40 in R&B as well as pop). Other highlights include the non-hit "Next To Me" and the Dusty Springfield cover "I Only Wanna Be With You." Not as strong as her self-titled 1987 album, mainly due to the lack of anything as hauntingly mesmerizing as "True Devotion," but still several steps above her stale efforts of the 90s.
Good mix of R&B and Pop.......2005-07-24
Some people might see some difficulties with the mix of all kind of styles on this album, but personally I don't mind because I think it works: you find producers like Stock Aitken Waterman, Full Force and others here. So you have pop-tracks like "Hot for you" and "Walk on air" plus R&B tracks like "I wanna have some fun". You can see that Sam did this album when she was still enjoying fame, because it's an album full of good songs - like she picked all the goodies for herself from the producers. Well done
A great pop album, like they don't make 'em anymore !.......2004-01-26
When Samantha Fox released this album in the late 80's, she reached the peak of her popularity. It spawned three succesful singles (the title track, "I Only Wanna Be With You" and "Love House"), and heralded her first-ever world tour.
What surprises the most with this album is how good it still sounds today. The big variety of producers makes it for quality listening, and it's an album that doesn't stall on the same sound twice. Most people were turned off by the fact that Samantha was a former porn star, and that she didn't have the most powerful voice in the world, but hey, she could still carry a pop tune and make you feel what it's about.
There were many, many great moments on this album. Of course, the three singles were fantastic ("Love House" was even totally ripped by Madonna on her classic "Vogue" single - same beat, same funky piano solo near the end), but I always wondered why there weren't more singles from the album. "Ready For This Love" in particular is a magnificent pop song, highly danceable and almost euphorical; if this one doesn't put you in a good mood, then chances are you're already dead. "One In A Million" was also a very catchy dance song, very energetic; and "Hot For You" was arguably one of the album's best songs, adding a surprising rock and roll touch to an album that was mostly dance and pop. It was a nice reminder that Samantha had initially opted for a rock and roll orientation for her career. "Confession" is also a standout, with its ambiant mood and dark edge. And the closer, the beautiful rock ballad "Out Of Our Hands", proved that she had the versatility to do a great job on ballads.
There are only a couple of duds on this album : the boring "Next To Me", which proved that Full Force had little creativity as producers and could only rely on two hooks; and "Walking On Air", too generic and repetitive for its own good.
After this album, Samantha said in interviews that she would go in the direction set by songs like "Hot For You" and "Out Of Our Hands", meaning more rock records. Unfortunately, her record company wanted to milk the dance formula to death and they hired Full Force once again to work on Sam's follow-up, the boring and half-baked "Just One Night". Thus ended the career of Samantha, proving that an artist should be the one to have creative control, and not the record company. Still, "I Wanna Have Some Fun" lived up to its title - and still does 15 years after its release.
Samantha's mix of R&B, bubblegum, and surprises.......2003-11-06
With a successful formula on her second album, I wonder if Samantha Fox theorized that the more producers the better, a strategy that works to some extent for Jennifer Rush. In addition to the Steve Power/Steve Lovell team and that of Stock-Aitken-Waterman, I Wanna Have Some Fun boasts two songs each done by Rob and Ferdi Bolland and Fred Zarr, with others doing one song only, and yes, their distinctive styles emerge. 80's dance pop definitely predominates here, but there are a few surprises here as well.
The title track might as well be called "Naughty Girls Still Need Love." "Hello it's me again/don't you know it's hard to keep a good woman down/but then again, maybe that could be fun." After a giggle, the song begins in earnest with a funky bass backbeat and harmonies by the Full Force boys and some monologue rap in the middle.
"Are you ready to do things tonight that you never dreamed were possible? Follow me." With that spoken intro, we get "Love House", a more danceable single, which has harmony vocals, a cacophony of rap-scratched words, strange voices, special effects, and ominous vocals of the guide of the house. I initially thought this was produced by Full Force, because of the heavy bass beat but it's a Bollands production. I really enjoyed my visit to this house, all right.
Samantha must have really fallen in love with drum machines and bass beats, as "Your House Or My House" mixes those and sundry keyboards, computerized voices, and a strong backing chorus and monologue by Sam. Pure dance pop, call it Stock-Aitken-Waterman vanilla with some chocolate mousse and sprinkles.
The Full Force-produced "Next To Me" is similar to but injects a trice more fizzy pop to Full Force's 80's R&B formula.
Fred Zarr produced "Ready For This Love," a spright thumping drum machines and funky synths that resembles something Kim Wilde might have done on her Close album, also released in 1988.
Power and Lovell were responsible for the haunting "True Devotion" on her eponymous album. They do another one, "Confession", which explores sin in a religious aspect, only this time, a heavy bass synth beat, drum track, quick bursts of string synths, and satanically deep voice saying things like "Je t'accuse." The rhythm reminds me somewhat of Mick Jagger's "Just Another Night."
Then comes the two typical S-A-W bubblegum songs, the first one, a single, being a cover of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Wanna Be With You." It's only fair to give Foxy a 60's song after Kylie did "The Locomotion," right? "You Started Something" is of a slightly slower tempo, though the sound is unmistakable. On both these songs, Foxy blows the S-A-W bubblegum without it messily sticking on her face like those who don't chew Hubba Bubba gum-remember those commercials?
If S-A-W was upbeat, then what does one call "One In A Million"? S-A-W songs on steroids? The Bollands produced this song, with a rapid fire chorus and a sound Bananarama would've peeled their skins for, there's even a fierce guitar solo midsong. A must have on any disco mix tape.
"Walking On Air", produced by Fred Zarr, is more Kim Wilde, Close-era pop and reduced the BPM compared to the previous barnburner.
The next song, "Hot For You" boasts synths but also a guitar that's alternatively wails and grinds like light metal. Is she trying to do Pat Benatar or Vixen, I ask, complimenting the laudable guitar solo that could fit in 80's pop-metal? Nothing wrong with the song.
"Out Of Our Hands" is another atmospheric Power and Lovell ballad, sporting piano, bombastic power synths, and haunting vocals by Sam.
The variety of sounds, be it Full Force-style R&B/pop, bubblegum synth pop, or the attempt at pop-metal, makes I Wanna Have Some Fun a masterpiece for Foxy. And just think, when I first got this, I was thrown by what I perceived to be an incoherent mess.
Good.......2002-08-04
This is a good album by Samantha Fox. It features the hits "I Wanna Have Some Fun" and "I Only want To Be With You". Unfortunatley after this album her career faded into oblivion and I have no idea where she went. I don't think people gave her a fair chance and once the nineties came she disappeared. I hope she returns to the pop scene soon.
