Musician extraordinaire Charlie Daniels is best known for his foot stomping fiddle-fest, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," but those who want to see the true progression of his work should check out his earlier work, particularly Fire on the Mountain. Alternately opinionated and tender, a balladeer as well as a hoe-down ring leader, Daniels effortlessly merged a variety of genres into his sound, and at the center of it all was his fiddle. His bad-ass anthem, "The South's Gonna Do It Again," was a live favorite, and in it Daniels's pride in his homeland stops just short of waving the Confederate flag. Its studio counterpart loses none of its energy. "Long Haired Country Boy" also displays Daniels's storytelling finesse and his "don't tread on me" attitude, and neither "Trudy" nor "King Size Rosewood Bed" have lost any of their appeal over time. --Steve Gdula

    CHARLIE DANIELS BEST ALBUMS ARE NOT AVAILABLE ON CD.

    Released in 1974, this is the fourth album from the Charlie Daniels Band, and the fifth from Charlie Daniels overall. It is also the first (oldest) Daniels album that is available on CD. It is 42 minutes long and the sound quality is fairly good, but not perfect.

    This was the major break through for Charlie Daniels. His previous albums hardly got any airplay, until his third album, Honey In The Rock, with Uneasy Rider. Also, the FM radio stations would play No Place To Go. I remember the first few times I heard it, and tried to figure out who the band was (Allman Brothers? Marshall Tucker? Quicksilver?).

    With Fire on the Mountain, Daniels hit it big with The South's Going To Do it Again. Sort of Daniels' and southern rock's answer to Peter, Paul and Mary's, I Dig Rock and Roll Music.

    Long Haired Country Boy was also a mild hit. It has one of my favorite lines: "the early morning sun shines/through the bubbles in my beer". Also getting airplay was Caballo Diablo, a rocking country song.

    Fire on the Mountian also included live versions of Orange Blossom Special and No Place to Go (at 11 minutes) for the Southern Boogie fans.

    Like many of his later albums, Fire On the Mountain would be a regurgitation of earlier works. Trudy and Georgia were also on Daniels first album (called Charlie Daniels). No Place to Go was on Honey in the Rock and Orange Blossom Special was a concert standard for Daniels and was on other live compilations featuring Daniels and other southern rock bands.

    For many this is the first Daniels album because the first four have been forgotten (almost lost). In the late seventies, they were re-issued, but with different covers and titles. Honey in the Rock was re-issued as Uneasy Rider and Way Down Yonder was re-issued as Whiskey. None of these are available on CD.

    Daniel's first hit, Uneasy Rider, was a spoken word number about a long haired hippy type getting a flat tire in front of a redneck bar, and how he had to fight his way out once the rednecks realized he had long hair. In a nasty turn, he made a remake of Uneasy Rider, called Uneasy Rider 88 on Homesick Heroes. In this updated version, Daniels accidently winds up in a gay bar, and he brags about how he beat up the fags.

    Charlie Daniels was in his thirties before he formed his first band. Prior to this he tried writing for others (Elvis did one of his songs), was a studio musician (played on some of Dylan's records) and was a producer (Youngbloods). With the Charlie Daniels Band, he did southern rock for nearly a decade before going more country. He has a "museum" in Nashville, which is the back part of a store in the downtown area, a few doors down from Hooters.

    Daniels Band was probably the second Southern Rock band (after the Allman Brothers). He added some more country to the sound (the Allman Brothers were more blues and jazz oriented). He also added the ridiculous big fat good old boy personna with the ridiculous oversized cowboy hat. He had some good songs and added some depth ot the music with his guitar playing and fiddle.

    In the world of Southern Rock, this album tops the charts. Charlie Daniels does a great job blending blues, country, rock, and the wonders of the south on this album. The re-release of "Trudy" and "Georgia" are by far perfected compared to their original release on the album "Charlie Daniels". For those just getting into The Charlie Daniels Band, this album is a great place to start. A definite must for fans of Southern Rock and Country Rock.

    to me this is the ultimate CDB cd, with stand out tracks like, long haired country boy, trudy, georgia, the south's gonna do it, orange blossom special, to be honest they are all stand out tracks!!! if you like old lynyrd skynyrd, or the allman bros. or even marshall tucker, do yourself a favor and get this cd!!!, true southern boogie!!

    FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN and MILLION MILE REFLECTIONS are the two best studio albums by Charlie Daniels. If you're new to Daniels' music get these two and A DECADE OF HITS- preferably all at once.

    If you're a CDB fan, then crank up your stereo, grab a cup of Starbucks, and get ready to rock and roll. From the first notes of "Caballo Diablo," this album commands your undivided attention. Some of Charlie's best work, such as "Long Haired Country Boy," "The South's Gonna Do It Again," and his cover of the classic "Orange Blossom Special" make this a great buy. Personally, I would save your cash and buy the CDB 3 Pak, with this album, "Million Mile Reflections," and "Full Moon." You won't be disappointed.

    I remember when I was little, I had this cd, but i lost it. I bought a similiar type of one through TIme Life and decided to try the Classical Thunder one. I have like it so far.

    This two CD set is magnificent. I got the set in the early 1990's when it was advertised on television, along with other releases in Time Life's set. I was struck by the interpretations of the conductors. Whenever I hear these pieces now, I judge them against this recording. Amazing selection as well. There are staples of orchestra repetoire, like Beethoven symphonies, but also gems that are not heard very often, like the Rimsky-Korsakov "Procession of the Nobles." A very impressive recording.

    I got this CD when I was around 16 because I loved a lot of the music on this double CD set. As a student pursuing a Music Education major, it has been a great asset for my musically, and just great for listening to. I will drive on short trips and take this with me and blast it louder than the guy in the next car blasting rap music. I also take it skiing as it sets a great tempo down the mountain. This is a great CD for anyone that loves music.

    I just heard this CD last weekend being played between sets at a club I was gigging at. It knocked me out. Each song was rendered with heartfelt passion to both the material (Dead songs) and the genre (Reggae). There wasn't anything phoney, forced or "wrong" about it. It just worked to the point of near perfection. I saved the fifth star for the original writers and performers - The Greatful Dead.

    The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

    Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

    If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

    The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

    I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

    Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

    What a trip this disc is! I used to be pretty uninterested in the Dead- if it was on, I'd listen, but thats about it. Then I happened on this disc! I love it. I remarked to a friend at how happy the reggae makes the songs seem- and she pointed out that they always were happy! I have a new appreciation for the band after hearing their songs interpreted this way! Standouts are "Shakedown Street" by Marcia Griffiths, "Sugaree" by Gregory Issacs, and "Birdsong" by Ken Boothe!

    Once again, reggae musicians who are not familiar with the Dead are brought together to play their music. Considering their lack of knowledge, they do a so-so job. But the Dead's music was in the soul, man! The people who put this out are just capitalizing on the lingering longing for the Grateful Dead. Avoid this and buy Dick's Picks from the Dead themselves!

    If you're a fan of classic Christmas music, this is one of the albums you need for your collcetion. Jim Neighbors is not Gomer Pyle. His powerful voice is on full display here, and the song selection is well vaired. Go Tell It On The Mountain is the highlight here, but all of the songs deliver a strong Christmas mood. This will fit fine right next to Bing Crosby, Perry Como, and Nat King Cole in your Christmas album collection.

    These songs bring back memories of us kids coming in from school and hearing Jim Nabors as we were greeted by my mom in the kitchen with hot chocolate ready to go. It just wasn't the Christmas season without hearing "Go Tell It on the Mountain" as only Jim Nabors can sing it. I am thrilled to finally add this CD to my own Christmas music collection!

    This CD really represents the music our family likes to hear during the holiday season. The selections are beautifully arranged, performed with a variety of vocalists and are all recognizable holiday favorites that had us singing away while wrapping gifts and enjoying the season's festivities (even made cleaning the house somewhat more bearable). I would highly recommend this CD as a musical gift to yourself and someone else!

    5 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Recording from America's Other Pops Orchestra.......2004-12-17

    This is a wonderful recording by America's "Other" Pops orchestra. Since I am from Boston, I automatically associate the word Pops with the Boston Pops and when it was first released, purchased it at will believing it was a Boston Pops recording. Upon listening, I realized that it was a different sound than the Boston Pops sound, but this discovery was hardly a disappointment. One of the reasons why Erich Kunzel has been so successful with the Cincinnati Pops is his ability to bring forth a powerful and unique sound. This recording has all the Christmas standards, but the standards are presented in a creative manner, which is both a Telarc and Cincinnati Pops trademark.

    There are two great strengths to this recording: its variety and its guests. There are full symphonic arrangements as well as arrangements for soloist, adult and children's choirs. Brass and organ ensembles, and hand bell choirs. The various arrangements are placed in an order throughout the recording that keeps the listener's attention. The gests are also outstanding. Rosemary Clooney, baritone Sherill Milnes, Doc Severinsen, and Toni Tenille add star power to the recording. There are unique tracks, particularly the chilling and somewhat ephemeral "Walking in the Air" from THE SNOWMAN performed by treble Stephen Van Dyck.

    I have owned the recording since its release in 1990 and it has become a treasured part of my holiday collection. I am sure other listeners will treasure it too.

    One of the best Christmas albums you will find. Perfect balance between religious favorites, non-religious classics, and children's favorites. All tastefully done and arranged to fit the theme of the song. Many of the percussion "effects" bring the songs to life and the solo and choral vocals are outstanding. Cannot recommend this album highly enough. A must have for any Christmas collection to be enjoyed for many years.

    What a wonderful Christmas gift. Erich Kunzel and The Cincinnati Pops rarely fail to please on the Telarc label, and this is (IMHO of course) one of their most pleasing efforts. Rosemary Clooney (Best "White Christmas" since Der Bingle), Doc Severinsen, Stephen Van Dyck, and other guests add wonderfully to a very fun, upbeat, and enjoyable Christmas collection. This cd has become the most played in my Christmas collection...I can't recommend it highly enough.

    Even at his peak Ormandy never made the blood race. His aesthetic didn't allow music to break out of a mold that was shapely, lush, and careful. But in old age the conductor's energy considerably flagged, and RCA got a bad deal when they signed him up just before he died. Here the Philadelphia Orch. steps into Boston Pops territory, but technically they sound miles ahead of their northern counterparts. There's nothing to point out that's better or worse than anything else.

    I'd say the chief value of this pops collection is the fine recorded sound and the appeal to young listeners getting their first taste--as we all did-- of chestnuts like the Sorcerer's Apprentice and Danse Macabre.

    No excessive motion, no exaggerated sound effect, just steadily well-balanced performance. This is the way Ormandy has always been towards his recording. Nevertheless, sound quality is superme, bold and full of layer.

    This album, seemingly designed to appetite the followers of "The Glorious Sound of Philadelphia" like the delighted dessert over the dinner. Amusing and joyful. Instead of giving you a blast of your mind, Ormandy let the music played just by the way it should sound. Simply enjoying and easy listening. Like the sun shine over the meadow.

    3 out of 5 stars Ormandy and Philadelphia Going Through the Motions.......2002-08-06

    An Ormandy critic once wrote: "Ormandy was basically a good, reliable musician who cultivated an orchestral sound that served all music in the same routine, uniform way." While this statement is prima facie untrue, one wouldn't know it from listening to this latest entry in BMG's "High Performance" series (RCA's new audiophile series of recordings from the late 1960's through the late-'70's, early-'80's, akin to RCA's "Living Stereo" series of recordings from the 1950's - 1960's).

    Despite my ardor for the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy (please, God, gave us from Sawallisch!), during a period of time in the early 1970's, there were a number of his performances which I find fall below his usual high standards (especially the RCA Red Seal releases of Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony [I much prefer the Columbia Masterworks 1959 recording] and Swan Lake excerpts). These recordings have the beautiful tonal sheen typical of the "Philadelphia Sound," but Ormandy's tempo is painfully dragging; it sounds as though he's on valium in these recordings.

    The Fantastic Philadelphians falls within the same company; These are showpieces, but I couldn't detect any of the fire that
    Ormandy lent to other recordings from this era (particularly his 1968 recording of Tchaikovsky's Pathetique Symphony and his 1973 recording of Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony). The sound is gorgeous, but the pacing so slow that it sounds as though Ormandy doesn't care about these pieces, as though he's just trying to get through the recording sessions.

    However, there is a glimpse of Ormandy's incendiary potential in the Russian Sailors' Dance and Hungarian Dance No. 5, but instead of a raging flame, all that's there is the pilot light. With all of the excellent unavailable Ormandy recordings out there, I do not understand why BMG chose to release this disc as their first Ormandy entry in the "High Performance" series. I would have much preferred to have seen them release his 1978 recording (the first digital recording made by RCA) of Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra or all of the Sibelius recordings languishing in BMG vaults (especially Symphony No. 7 [1975] and Tapiola [1976]) or his peerless recording of Dvorak's Eighth Symphony (1977). But, then again, BMG's neglect of Ormandy is documented and endemic. For example: BMG has released his recordings of Sibelius' First (1978) and Fifth (1975) Symphonies, both tremendously subtle and profound recordings, but not in North America. They are only out on their European "RCA Classical Navigator" series, and I had to order the CD from an online British store.

    Back to this disc: If what you want is to hear great classical showpieces, beautifully recorded and played, to hear as
    background music, then buy this disc -- it is not without merit. But if you want to *actively* listen to these pieces, skip this one; Ormandy and the Philadelphians are on auto-pilot on this one.

    This CD is a compilation of sorts--a recording of personal orchestral favorites that the Philadelphia Orchestra and its legendary music director Eugene Ormandy made in 1971 and 1972 for RCA.

    While the eleven works on the CD are often thought of as "pops stables" or "musical bon-bons", Ormandy and his orchestra nevertheless displayed a great deal of professionalism in giving these works a great deal of new energy. Of particular note are the three works--Mussorgsky's "Night On Bald Mountain"; Ponchielli's "Dance Of The Hours"; and Dukas' "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"--which the orchestra performed under Leopold Stokowski in 1940 for Disney's classic movie FANTASIA. Ormandy breathes new life into these orchestral warhorses. The performance of Saint-Saens' ghoulish "Danse Macabre" is appropriately spooky. And the much-covered "Dance Of The Comedians" by Smetana, and Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5 are also pulled off brilliantly. This is Ormandy at his late-era peak, and is essential to understanding how he bought this orchestra to the position as one of the world's best, a standing it has held ever since FANTASIA.

    Ormandy and the Philadelphians--who are truly fantastic in these performances--give the listener an aural and musical treat.

    Many of these performances are superlative, and the engineering is excellent. While Ormandy could let his players get a little sloppy when he was recording for RCA, such is not the case here.

    Danse Macabre is wonderfully well done, but the other Saint-Saens item, Bacchanale from Samson and Deliah, has one of the most overwhelming climaxes I've ever heard.

    Espana seems to be the one item that isn't totally successful, IMHO, but not unsatisfying either. On the other hand, the Sorcerer's Apprentice is very well done, as is the Night on Bald Mountain (although here a little more roughness is called for).

    The Philadelphia violas really let you luxuriate in the de Falla and the Gliere. And what a delight to have some other bon-bons, especially the Dances of the Comedians and Hours.

    Worth every penny!
