Great.......1999-12-01

This is one of the best Mountain Stage CD's. I agree with the other reviewer, but I want to add a little. It's too bad that you can't sample some of the best songs on this CD. Maura O'Connell's Summerfly is wonderful. My personal favorite is Kathy Mattea's Where Have You Been, it makes me cry every time I hear it! If you are not very lucky in your marriage you won't get it.

Feel-Human Music.......1998-10-31

This is one of my favorite albums. If you needed a category I guess the closest thing would be "folk," but what would that tell you? The best music engages all your faculties, yes? From the dancing shoes to the sixteenth-note-follower to the grin and the tear ducts, all at once. Then it's feel-human music.

John Prine's "Big Old Goofy World." Amazing guitar picking lays the groundwork for, well, goofy, but also touching lyrics about similes: "Mind all your manners / Be quiet as a mouse / Some day you'll have a home / That's as big as a house... There's a big old goofy man / Dancin' with a big old goofy girl / Ooh, Baby! It's a big old goofy world."

"Tank Park Salute" about a man's loss of his father.

"Summerfly"--Maura O'Connell sings the great Cheryl Wheeler song. Jerry Douglas plays his mournful, sparkling, killer-groove Dobro.

"Simply"--Sara Hickman sings: "I'll tell you simply I've / Fallen for you / I've never felt this way before / I don't need flowers and /I don't mind tears..."

Jimmy Dale Gilmore sings, "These Blues ain't nuthin' like the blues I had before I paid a little debt I owed--When I get theses blues I just look back down that road."

The singers on this album approach & sometimes cross the borders of rude, sappy, and dumb. Like human beings with things to say. And boy, can some of them play.

good but not great.......2006-12-22

You cannot go wrong with the "Mountain Stage" series. It is just a matter of whether you are a fan of the various artists for each disc. The series is also good for exposing you to songs that you would, otherwise, never listen to.

The best tune is "Twighlight" by Rick Danko and Grath Hudson. It is a beautiful and emotional song. "O Marie" by Daniel Lanois is also of very high quality. "Such a Night" by Dr. John features magnificent piano playing. Richard Thompson could do no wrong and "Shoot out the Lights" is one of his better hard rockers. The Buckwheat Zydeco closer is a fitting ending and is a smoking hot rocker.

I love NRBQ but "Yes, yes, yes" is weak for a group famous for their high energy and terrific musicanship.

The rest of the songs are okay.

If you check out all of the mountain stage cds and pick the ones where you have an affinity for the artists then you will definitely be pleased.

This series is the best collection of eclectic artists both famous and cult favorites.

Cool.......2001-07-11

This CD is very good, as any of you who are familiar with Mountain Stage would anticipate. Like usual, host Larry Groce steals the show. His version of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on the Wire" is an all-timer. Danko and Hudson are great as well. Groce and company's cover of "Positively 4th Street" should be released.

Best Country Album Compilation Available!.......2002-09-03

This was the first album to be released under "The Best of Austin City Limits" from their vast library of classic country music. It delivers the best country album compilation I've ever heard. With the likes of Mary Chapin Carpenter's "I Feel Lucky" (and you will if you own this great album) to Waylon Jennings "I've Always Been Crazy" and Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man", all the great country music venues are explored here. From slow, tender love songs to foot-stompin' tunes, the minutes race by like an old iron horse headed west into the sunset as you listen to your favorite hits. It all ends too soon, but lively, with "Boogie Back to Texas" by Asleep At The Wheel. If you don't own this album, get it. Then do someone else a favor--share it!

Great Compilation.......2002-01-16

From the familiar first words, "Its Austin City Limits" followed by the unmistakeable voice of Merle doing "Silver Wings", this CD captures what the show is all about. I listen to this CD at least once a week! Just buy it.

Who had to choose the best ofý?.......2000-05-09

"Austin City Limits" has been on the air since 1976. How does somebody arrive at the 16 best performances from those 24+ years!

Anybody who watches ACL regularly is aware that it certainly isn't just country music; some of the best acts I've seen have been Stevie Ray Vaughan, Danny Gatton, John Mayall, The Neville Brothers. This collection, however, definitely leans toward "country" acts. (I believe there's a "blues best of" compilation as well.) With so much material available, something would definitely be wrong if there were a dud performance in a 16-cut collection, and there's not. (The disc is a mere 51 ½ minutes - why not 20 or 25 minutes more?) Some of my favorites: a rockin' "Blue Side of Town" by Patty Loveless, "Baby Now That I've Found You" by Alison Krauss, "He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones.

I'd really like to be able to purchase my favorite ACL programs from over the years, either video or audio, but alas, they blame licensing / royalty complications. So I guess these "Best of" compilations will have to do. And this one does nicely.

Fantastic.......1998-08-04

This has to be one of the finest collection albums ever put together. The sound is crisp, clear and the song selection is superb. Every country fan will know the songs on this one. I highly recommend this album.

Great CD to bring back memories of some of the most popular "Southern Rock Groups" - easy listening makes this one of those CD's to put on when you just want to settle back and relax.

Great music . . . but not the "best of".......2006-11-05

For anyone unfamiliar with "Southern Rock," this cd is a great SAMPLER. However, this is nowhere near the "best of" Southern Rock. I have to agree with the other reviewers in that you would need to include songs from Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, Marshall Tucker Band, and more songs from Lynyrd Skynyrd to truly represent the "best of" Southern Rock. In fact, several of the songs on this cd would probably fit better on a cd of "Country rock" selections (i.e., Pure Prairie League & Ozark Mountain Daredevils). What this cd does is provide an excellent spectrum of music that falls into the "Southern rock" genre. From the mellow, easy-listening sounds of "Let Me Love You Tonight" and "Fooled Around and Feel in Love," to the jazzy feel of "Champage Jam" to the hard-driving multi-guitar attacks of 38 Special, the Allman Brothers, and the Outlaws, you get a good feel for the variety that exists even within this style of music. Of course the presence of "Ramblin Man," "Sweet Home Alabama," and "Ghost Riders in the Sky" alone make this cd worth the price of admission! The South's Gonna Do it Again!

Not enough Skynyrd.......2002-05-28

I'd just like to say that there just aint enough Skynyrd on this compilation. I do like The Allman Brothers Band but one song from the Skynyrd, the greatest southern rock band of all time come on. And why is it that on all these "southern rock" or "classic rock" compilations for Skynyrd they always put in songs like Sweet Home Alabama or Free Bird? I love those songs (especially Free Bird) but they're getting played out and that does no good for the band. They should put songs like The Needle and the Spoon on there.

Without Molly Hatchet & Blackfoot...you ain't got much........1999-04-17

Anytime you overlook Molly Hatchet & Blackfoot when your talking Southern Rock, you overlook a major portion of the hard drivin, butt thumpin down south style.

How can a southern rock compilation be complete without at least one song from the Marshall Tucker Band, or does that have something to do with licensing?

How are they gonna do that one?.......2006-02-01

This is a collection of songs played live on the Mountain Stage radio show. Most of the songs here are the blues, but there are other styles represented. My personal favorite is the acappella version of "Purple Haze" by the Bobs.

The best of the eight in the series.......2003-06-27

I have had all eight of the Mountain Stage series for a number of years and they all get play time in my house. Somehow, though, I always come back to this one. It's a good thing.

Marcia Ball rips through "That's Enough..." If you don't dance to that, you're dead. The soulful Charles Musselwhite lays down one of the best guitar licks I've ever heard on "It's Getting Warm in Here". Pops Staples recalls his days traveling with Martin Luther King including a conversation the day before MLK was killed.

Keep looking! This is not what you're looking for........2002-02-10

This CD is supposedly the "Best of the Best" Road music. Trust me, it's not. Worst $x.xx I ever spent! I expected to hear songs by the original artists. Instead, they are all done by someone else, and not done very well. The songs have all the right words, but wrong artist, and the music isn't quite right.
