Album Description

Barbara Mandrell is undoubtedly our greatest country music ambassadress. Her career, which has spanned over 30 years, has not only included a massive amount of hit recordings, but her TV show (Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters) in the early '80s - probably the last truly successful variety show - gave the genre incredible exposure, and brought her so much notoriety that she not only won prestigious country music awards, but also the more broad-based People's Choice Awards - nine of them!

Her appeal was far and wide because she not only sang, she played many instruments, which was extremely unusual for a woman in the '70s. Audiences responded to her music because it encompassed all styles, even though she was categorized as country. Early on, she adopted Duke Ellington's famous statement that "there are only two kinds of music - good and bad." That assertion governed the way she chose her songs and the manner in which she elected to record them as evidenced by such cover choices as "Married But Not To Each Other," "If Lovin' You Is Wrong, I Don't Want To Be Right" and "Woman To Woman" in which she struggled to perfect the beginning spoken intro.

"I remember saying to my producer Tom Collins, 'I can't do a recitation,'" Mandrell recalls. "He said, 'I don't ever want to hear, 'I can't.' I always say I don't want to hear that either, so I had to do it."

Excellent collection of Barbara's greatest songs. What wonderful memories this cd brought back.

5 out of 5 stars Barbara Mandrell rocks.......2007-01-10

Gave this to my sister for her birthday and bought one for myself - excellent!!!!!!!!! We both enjoyed it so much!

5 out of 5 stars One Of A Kind.......2006-02-27

Where to start.. where to start.. Barbara Mandrell is one of the best and most beautifuly loved female country musicians of all time. Her untimely unforgettable raspy voice brings back the memories we all once shared in the 70's and 80's. What were you doing when these songs came out? I remember watching The Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters show on TV. hearing her talented voice in each song on the radio. And this collection certainly brings back those memories of each song. Whether you were "SLEEPING SINGLE IN A DOUBLE BED", "BURNING THE MIDNIGHT OIL", having an "ANGEL IN YOUR ARMS", or "LIVING IN TIMES LIKE THESE", this collection is right for you. I say go buy the cd.. It's the best Barbara Mandrell has out there, where else can you find a collection with as many of her songs on one cd? Buy the cd you won't be disapointed!

5 out of 5 stars Sonic Perfection! .......2005-09-21

I have enjoyed Barbara Mandrell my whole life. Much more that a great musician, she is a superb entertainer. With her determination, moral strength, and courage. She is a great lady and it saddens me that you can not walk into the local music store to purchase her albums; whiel most albums today will become forboten songs tomorrow, hers are not dated.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of Barbara's career.......2003-10-11

Barbara is my favorite pop-country singer - I don't count Dolly as a pop-country singer, as most of her recordings are traditional - and this compilation of some of her music shows why.

Twenty of the songs here were recorded during her long spell with MCA, but the set begins with two of her early tracks recorded for Columbia and ends with I wish that I could fall in love today, the biggest hit that she had after she left MCA.

Barbara tackled every type of song, or so it seemed, but she had a soft spot for R+B classics. Her biggest hit came via a cover of an R+B song (If loving you is wrong) and it suits her well. On this collection, my favorites are Married but not to each other, Standing room only, Years, Woman to woman and Sleeping single in a double bed, but every song here is a masterpiece. Barbara is equally good with up-tempo rocking songs (Crackers, In times like these, Fast lanes and country roads) as ballads, many of which are on the sad side. The saddest song of all is The best of strangers, about a marriage gone wrong although the couple are still living together. However, the last ballad here, No one mends a broken heart like you, is much more optimistic.

This is a brilliant collection of Barbara's music.

1 out of 5 stars Barbara Mandrell--Christmas at our house.......2006-12-27

I ordered this before Xmas at a total price of $8.42...Then got an email that it was out of stock--then after Xmas I look again and found it for $30-35 what gives?

5 out of 5 stars Christmas Tradition.......2005-11-22

I was so excited to find this on CD! I have worn out my record from years and years of playing it. Even my 6 year old knows the words to "It Must Have Been The Mistletoe". To me, my Christmas season can't officially start until I play this and Elvis's Christmas album.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas at Our House.......2003-12-22

This has been the number one favorite Christmas album of our family since we first bought it in 1984. We've worn out several copies and now our grown children are adding it to their collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD!.......2003-12-09

When this recording was first issued in 1984, it's a shame that it never got the recognition it rightly deserved, being largely overshadowed by Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton's "Once Upon a Christmas" album. Nonetheless, this CD features song of the most heartfelt songs sung by Barbara yet. There's the cheery "Christmas at Our House", the bluesy "Santa, Bring My Baby Home", my favourite: "It Must Have Been the Mistletoe", the poignant "Born to Die", to the sacred "Christmas Story", which closes the album and reminds us all what the season is truly about. I highly recommend adding this title to your holiday collection, along with CD's from The Carpenters, Anne Murray, and Kenny Rogers among others. Kudos to Barbara for such a timeless album.

5 out of 5 stars B. Mandrell - Forgotten tracks to be digitally remastered.......2002-07-26

As one of Barbara's biggest fans for the last 22 years, I can honestly say, I have mixed emotions with MCA Records at this point! It seems over the last 5 years since Barbara "retired" from the recording industry that this major Record Label, with whom Barbara brought many, many hits over a 20-year period is giving her, not to mention her legions of fans, a raw deal by re-hashing and re-releasing compilations of the same singles she had over her tenure with MCA Records. Not that these songs are not spectacular, but I believe they should review her catalog of album cuts over these years and consider a compilation of "rare" album cuts and B-sides to be digitally re-mastered.

The standouts on this compilation, due primarily to lack of availability on CD format are "'Till You're Gone", "One Of A Kind Pair Of Fools", and "Happy Birthday Dear Heartache" - not to take away credit from any of the other eight magnificent cuts on this collection.

I just feel that, MCA (if you are reading this!) should review and consider re-mastering some of Barbara's spectacular album cuts from her catalog and releasing a compilation CD, or even better, a Box Set!! Songs to consider for this potential project: "Cryin' All The Way To The Bank" (1983); "Just Like Old Times" (1984); "If They Grow Tired Of My Music" (1985); "Survivors" (1985); "Why Am I Still In Love" (1982); "How Long" (1977); "Sometime, Somewhere, Somehow" (1980); "Black and White" (1982); "Bad Boys" (1983); and "Don't Look In My Eyes" (1985) - just to name a select few of so many!!

Take a note MCA Records - thanks for the continued interest in Barbara's previous recording accomplishments. Let's just not forget the songs that weren't so obvious and well-known and digitally re-master them onto CD format! I'm sure it would be a best-seller due to rarity!

4 out of 5 stars A Legend In Her Own Time.......2000-11-14

They just don't do it like Barbara Mandrell anymore. She set the standard. She brought style and class to country music and made it "Cool." She was the consumate entertainer. On record, on TV or on stage she gave her listeners everything she had. In October of 1997 Barbara Mandrell left the spotlight and the world of not just country, but all music suffered a great loss. This new compilation from MCA Records brings together some of her best performances. Barbara Mandrell began her career on CBS records in 1970 (for a collection of those songs I recommend SUPER HITS) and moved to ABC (which MCA eventually bought) in 1975 and released "Standing Room Only." From there, her career began to soar. She scored crossover hits with "Married, But Not To Each Other" and "Woman To Woman" in 1977. In 1978 she finally hit #1 with both "Sleeping Single in a Double Bed" and "If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Want To Be Right." After winning a CMA for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1979, Barbara took herself and her sisters to network television and the hits kept coming. 1981's "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool" became her fourth #1 smash and she became the FIRST artist to win the CMA for Entertainer of the Year two years in a row. Although her TV show folded due to health issues her recording career kept on going. She had more #1s with "Til You're Gone" and "One of a Kind Pair of Fools" in 1982 and 1983. The last selection on this CD is 1984's "Happy Birthday Dear Heartache." Shortly after the release of this song, Barbara was involved in a serious accient that almost ended her life and her career. But, she came back in all her glory the following year, proving that she's no quitter. This compilation is a nice collection of songs spanning the years when Barbara was at the top of her form and making herself a true musical legend. Barbara is one of those artists who had left an indelible mark on the face of music and inspired many of the new artists like Shania Twain and Martina McBride who continue in her tradition. If you're a long-time Barbara Mandrell fan this CD is a must for your collection. But, it's also a good album for ANYONE who loves music to have. Not just country. Barbara sang many different styles of music, so there's something for everyone. So buy it already and you'll soon discover why Barbara Mandrell is one of the best....a ture living legend.

5 out of 5 stars Most Awesome Collection of Country Queens Ever Packaged!.......2005-05-25

This Time-Life collection of the 20 greatest female country singers of the 1950's through the 1970's has been such a blockbuster success in the television commercial hawking it has been parodied on Saturday Night Live with Jennifer Aniston! This is truly a historic collection of legendary performances that every country music fan should own, spanning from Kitty Wells in the early 50's to Barbara Mandrell in the late 70's. These are the ORIGINAL recordings too! Almost every song on this CD was an essential ground-breaker for country music, a true landmark record! These are songs ("The End of the World", "Ode to Billie Joe", "Rose Garden", "Help Me Make it Through the Night" etc. etc.) that even those with just a passing knowledge of country music are well familiar with and many of these ladies - notably Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton - are true American pop culture legends. Every song and every performance is truly a classic unforgettably performed by as extraordinary a collection of female vocalists as any music genre ever had in a single generation. Certainly today's country "divas" cannot compete with these QUEENS. Every artist here is represented with her signature hit with the curious exceptions of Kitty Wells (her classic "Making Believe" is featured instead of the historic "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels"), Donna Fargo ("Funny Face" may have been a bigger pop crossover but "Happiest Girl in the Whole USA" is surely Donna's most famous song), and Brenda Lee (represented by "Break it to Me Gently" instead of say, "I'm Sorry"). Lee's presence on this collection is the only sour note for me; yes she was a legendary pop artist who recorded in Nashville but this does not make her a country artist. Her song here "Break it to Me Gently" was not even released on the country music market!!! Nor were any of her other 60's pop hits issued to or played on country radio. The fact that she had a modest career later in the 1970's in the country music market does not make her vintage pop oldies now country records!! Her place should have been filled by Jeannie Seely ("Don't Touch Me"), Jan Howard ("Evil on Your Mind"), Susan Raye ("LA International Airport"), or Billie Jo Spears ("Blanket on the Ground"). Nevertheless, this still remains an awesome collection of every important country queen from Jean Shepard to Crystal Gayle to Connie Smith to Emmylou Harris to Dottie West - every one of these women (with the arguable exception of Ms. Lee on whom I may be being a tad too critical) rightfully deserves to be known as one of the true queens of country music.

Prime Cuts: I'll Leave Something Good Behind, Men and Trains, Where Are the Pieces of My Heart

"No Nonsense" was released in September of 1990 by Capitol Nashville Records--a glabrous time for the Jimmy Bowen-fronted label. With an array of over 60 artists on the label's roster, Mandrell, like the majority of her label mates, fell through the cracks. The lone survivor out of this morass was the monumentally successful Garth Brooks. Hence, it was no surprise that "No Nonsense" was only able to nest, for a single week, at the paltry 72 position on the Billboard's Country Album chart, making this Mandrell lowest charting album.

Despite its lukewarm commercial response, "No Nonsense" is a stellar effort from this two time CMA Entertainer of the Year. There's a cornucopia of songs on this 10-cut CD to appease her fans. The album starts off in a pop-country slanted direction that we have come to expect from Mandrell. "Where Are the Pieces of My Heart," the first of two Hugh Prestwood composition, is a pacey number driven by a mesmeric chatting guitar with some clever lines here and there. Not sonically inferior by any means is Prestwood's other offering, "More Fun Than the Law Allows." Though it's not spit n' dust country, it's one of those small town story songs you can only find in the country genre. "More Fun" tells the story of an officer interrupting the partying Ms. Mandrell and her partner for having too much fun in a frigid little town. It is winsome and cute; though I could live without "pa pa pow pow" refrain in the chorus.

While some of Mandrell's repertoire had been over daubed with synth work, "Feed the Fire" is a breath of fresh air. "Feed the Fire" has an organic, earthy feel with some tasty strumming of the guitar that complements rather than overwhelms. While Mike Reid's bluesy waltz "Too Soon to Tell" is remindful of Bonnie Riatt at her finest. "Men and Train," the debut single, is a charm. Comparing men with the moving caboose, "Men and Train" is exuberant and as the title suggests it roams along at a bullet train speed. "Men and Train" rocks merrily and it is a delightful ditty.

R.C. Bannon (Mandrell's brother-in-law) displays his wares to his advantage here with three cuts. The best of which is the duet with sister Louise Mandrell "I'd Rather Be Used (Than Not Needed At All)." "I'd Rather Be Used," a popish flavored ballad, overhears Barbara (playing the role of a housewife) interacting with Louise (playing the role of a single lady) about the advantages and disadvantages of marriage. Kudos to both Mandrells, as both played their roles convincingly. Equally delightful is the gentle love ballad "You Gave It to Me," while "We Can't Go Back" sings home the all-important message of forgetting the past and pressing on to the future with hope.

The highlight of the album comes at its tail end. "I'll Leave Something Good Behind" is the sophomore single released from this album (after "Men and Trains") but it is also the final charting single by Ms. Mandrell. Though it failed to placate radio, it's the best legacy Mandrell has had left behind. Culled from the first-rate catalog of songsmith Hilary Kanter, "I'll Leave Something Good Behind," is a moving tribute from a mother to a child. Elegantly accompanied by John Jarvis on piano, deftly produced by Jimmy Bowen and James Stroud, Mandrell has never sounded better--her raspy vocals caressing the lyrics as she exudes her maternal sentiments over every note on this masterpiece. Truly, one of those unforgettable moments captured on CD.

Overall, "No Nonsense" stands by its album title: there are no fillers or throwaways, just 10 well crafted songs with individualities. To me, "No Nonsense" will always be remembered as my favorite Barbara Mandrell CD. To paraphrase Mandrell herself, she has indeed left something good behind.

All though none of these are big "hits" (we can blame that on radio!) none the less, that are great recordings! I really enjoy them!

This is a great collection of some of Barbara's many hits. Highly recommended!!!

4 out of 5 stars I wasn't country before it was cool........2001-03-28

It's been a long time since I watched Barbara's TV show. I was always impressed about her talent when playing the steel guitar. Anyway, I bought this purely for the song "I Was Country When country Wasn't Cool". Unfortunately, country was cool before I liked it. The rest of this CD is very good. If you like the sound of country of old, then this is for you.

This is also cheap. If you want to hear more of Barbara without paying more then check this out.

This album was recorded and released in 1998 and sold only through the theater she owned in Pigeon Forge, TN.

The theater closed in 2005 when Louise sold it to spend more time with her husband.

This album is now being sold on AMAZON and EBAY only.
