Best known for 1951's "The Wild Side of Life," Thompson wed prewar Western swing to postwar honky-tonk and created a sound that proved viable both on the radio (where swing was usually ignored) and in the dance halls. He kept it up with a steady string of hits that included beer-drinking ballads, heart songs, folkish material, and flat-out novelties; though he plied a distinctly Texas sound, he was never shy about looking to the Southeast for material. His bands, often joined in the studio by guitarist Merle Travis, framed his vocals perfectly without ever taking the spotlight off the singer (and also cut instrumental hits such as "Wildwood Flower" on their own). With 20 tracks, this is the best single-CD sampler of Thompson's early work. --John Morthland

5 out of 5 stars The authentic original 40's & 50's Country + TRUE Country.......2007-05-28

I remember him from way back there in the late 40's to now. And whenever I couldn't buy anymore of his albums. That's ok, I just listened to my LPs and cassettes. Now I'm loading up on CDs. It's got everything: swing, western, honky tonk, blues and even twang(y) and "through the nose." I LOVE IT. I know better than to hope it'll come back. Because: it can NEVER be improved upon. I can live very well with what I've got. I've never seen the first thing bad written about him. He always seemed to be a very likable fella when I'd see him on TV (rarely), but we did use to get the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday nights on TV and the radio. And then there were the individual shows, like Porter, The Wilburn Brothers, and Hee Haw, etc, that he would be on.

5 out of 5 stars Top Grade Honky Tonk.......2007-04-17

This is a real cracker of an album and at the price it's a true bargain. Some call Hank a Western Swing artist however I cannot agree with this moniker. He's much more in the honky tonk mould and quick listen to this album confirms such. Apart from the monster (in depth and price) Bear Family set this is the best Hank Thompson album out there. It covers his period with Capitol Records (1947 - 1961) and, while he made some excellent music after this time, he had his biggest hits with Capitol under the production guidance of Ken Nelson. This album covers just about all those hits plus a couple of Brazos Valley Boys instrumentals (which are more in the Bob Wills Western Swing mould). Hank wrote or co-wrote 12 of the numbers here and shows he was not only a great singer and arranger but a superb songwriter. Another interesting aspect to this album is the obvious development of the artist over time and the improvement in recording technology and techniques. Also, the Brazos Valley Boys were one hot band that could swing it out when required and throughout supply complex, interesting and sympathetic support. Merle Travis supplies his trademark guitar work to many of the songs and he is in fine form indeed. The CD comes with a very informative booklet and the sound/mastering is top shelf making it an essential purchase. I encourage anyone looking for an album of 50's honky tonk in the, then, more "commercial" style at an absolute bargain low price to pop this in the trolley when next ordering music from Amazon. Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great 40's and 50's Country.......2007-01-03

This is a respectable collection of popular songs by Hank Thompson and The Brazos Valley Boys, with release dates going from the 1940's to 1960. In my opinion, he hit his peak in the 60's, but this collection clearly shows the progression of early country music, in both style and lyric development. I recall Hank and his band as huge, but my view may have been skewed by my rural Texas surroundings. The later songs exhibit the honky tonk influence, which I consider the golden era of country. If you collect vintage country, this is indeed essential. I had all these on vinyl but the years took their toll, so it was great to have another chance at them.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Hank Thompson.......2006-11-10

This is a really great CD for those who appreciate the old timey country-western.............it is primarily swing and toe-tappin! If you enjoy Hank Williams, you will love this CD. I highly recommend it! I am very pleased with the CD....the fast service and the continued excellence of Amazon.....................

There were plenty of slicked-back boys fighting for their share of the spotlight in the wake of Elvis Presley, but Wanda Jackson was one of the rare rockabilly gals of the '50s. It was Elvis himself who recommended that the Oklahoman set aside her country leanings for the time being and rock a little. That she did, drawing on a voice that cut through the din with a surplus of sass and a session band that included guitarists Joe Maphis and Buck Owens. This 20-song anthology mixes country and rockabilly sides, but while Jackson is likable tackling honky-tonk, she shines as a rockabilly spitfire. The likes of "Riot in Cell Block #9," "Hot Dog! That Made Him Mad," and "Let's Have a Party" offered an early affirmative to the question: "Can a gal rock?" The real mindblower here, however, is "Fujiyama Mama," which opens with Wanda boasting: "I've been to Nagasaki / Hiroshima, too / The same I did to them, baby, I can do to you." Pretty strange claim, considering only a dozen years had passed since two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars She deserved a lot more!.......2007-03-14

From the birth of R&R in the mid-fifties till the end of the decade,
all the big stars were "raw" leather-jacket male singers. This music
wasn't for female interpreters. Nevertheless one daring young lady
didn't care about the by then unproper seen attitude of a gyrating
R&R girl. She was Wanda Jackson who had several of the best sung
rockabilly hits ever. Probably the best pure R&R song of
all times is "Let's have a party": everytime I hear that song
I get the "shiver" and one can't help start shakin' his body.
If Wanda had quit the Rock& Roll scene and turned into a sweet
kind of pop music, she would have been as great as Brenda Lee.
When I listened to the songs of this CD, I thought all these songs
could have been Brenda singing... Their voices are exactly the same!
Wanda, however, was forced to change her wonderful and real rockin'
style into Country which she did perfectly well and many of the
songs on this great CD are of that genre. As a matter of fact, after
each R&R song comes a C&W song. The quality is just out of sight.
What a pity they din't permit her to keep on rockin'. Her carreer
suffered a big halt in the 60's and never recuperated those first impressive
genuine R&R songs. It definitely wasn't for female singers those days.
That's one of the reasons why this CD is a real treasure!

4 out of 5 stars Real Country.......2007-01-12

Wanda is a great performer and sings true country not the junk called country today.

5 out of 5 stars fabulous 5O's.......2006-02-27

This record is a must from the middle of the 50's .
Excellent singer , very good musicians and an excellent recording .
This record is still amazing and seems to sound very modern due to the quality of the recording and the mastering.
I recommend this record to all rock and roll fans

5 out of 5 stars An inexpensive and great overview of Wanda's career..........2004-05-26

This cd is a perfect introductory one for a new fan, for it offers the two sides of Wanda... the rockabilly queen and the country torch singer, although there is a LOT more rockabilyl here(thankfully). This cd features rockabilyl classics liek Fujiyama Mama, as well as a blues "Kansas City Blues", and some country/honky tonk/rockabilly "I Gotta Know" and some hillbilly stuff too. A great cd, a great price, though if you want to spend a little more and get ALL the rockabilyl classics try Ace's Queen of Rockabilly or Bear family's Wanda Rocks or just for the Gold and get Bear Family's box set, Right or Wrong! Well, you migth just want to start here, fir this sampler is such a budget price and contians all her rockabilly ESSENTIALS, and shines her in a light as more then just a rock'n'roller. A versitile and great singer who could be rough and roudy and rev ger vocie up liek a 57 Chevy or could coo sweetly like a canarie! Great cd!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wanda.......2001-03-01

She was first female rocker, just now getting the long overdue credit she deserves....listen and wonder why it took so long, she needs to be the next to enter the R&R Hall Of Fame. Rock On Wanda!

"Sixteen tons" is highlight.
Good compilation,good booklet.

2 out of 5 stars At least it's got "16 Tons".......2004-03-15

I didn't know much about Tennessee Ernie Ford, besides "16 Tons," but figured that alone was enough to give this CD a chance. It is a good value, and has a nice mix of songs. Unfortunately, I must say very few besides "16 Tons" interested me. By and large, the songs are overly produced, and lack soul. Ford has a great voice, and a few other songs are worth listening (like "Milk 'em in the Morning Blues"). The album does what it claims to do, give you an inclusive collection of Ford's output, and if you like Ford, it probably won't dissapoint. But this CD left me cold.

5 out of 5 stars Great from beginning to end!.......1999-11-20

I always loved "Sixteen Tons", but I never knew any of Tennessee Ernie Ford's other songs. This collection, which is in chronological order, was terrific from beginnning to end, with lots of singable songs and excellent recording quality. Some of my favorites were "Milk 'em in the Morning Blues", "Country Junction", "I'll Never Be Free", "Hey Mr. Cotton-Picker" and, of course, "Sixteen Tons", but most of the other songs are very good, also. This CD is also a great value -- lots of songs for the price.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

A fantastic collection of old-time music, "Folks, He Sure Do Pull Some Bow!" captures vintage fiddle music at that rare crossroads where the blues, jazz, and something that would one day be called folk were all in their infancy. For fiddle virtuosos performing between 1927 and 1935, quite simply, anything goes. Banjo Ikey Robinson's red hot "My Four Reasons" swings with humor and pizzazz, the State Street Boys' "Rustlin' Man" features the down-and-out blues vocals and fiddling of Big Bill Broonzy , and the Mississippi Sheiks' jazzy, but blues-inspired "Lazy Lazy River" musically straddles both sides of the Mason Dixon Line. For many listeners, the more esoteric tracks will stick out: Bo Chatman (a.k.a. double-entendre blues king Bo Carter) is heard fiddling behind Alec Johnson's goofy vocals on "Sister Maud Mule" (and in the spotlight on his own "Good Old Turnip Greens"); the Georgia Yellow Hammers' "G Rag" is the product of a then-rare integrated recording session; and Abrew's Portuguese Instrumental Trio performs "Cabo Verdranos Peca Nove" with incredible fiddling on what must be one of the first attempts at a crossover world-music disc. It's all here--great remastering, in-depth liner notes, and wonderful playing. Each release from Old Hat--Violin, Sing the Blues for Me and Music from the Lost Provinces--feels definitive, and this gem is certainly no different. --Jason Verlinde

Album Description

"Beautifully assembled, meticulously annotated, Folks is yet another striking contribution by Old Hat to the reassessment, if not the rewriting, of blues history. This is wonderfully unexpected music which refuses to conform to any of the accepted conventions of 12-bar blues. It should serve as a reminder of why the world continues to be drawn to this music, described by early observers as something unaccountably wild and strange. Folks restores some of that wildness, strangeness, and incalculable beauty." Peter Guralnick - author Careless Love, Searching For Robert Johnson, Last Train To Memphis

"I love this CD. So much so that I am jealous and wish that I had done it!" Lawrence Cohn - producer American Odeon's Blind Willie McTell box set, Columbia/Legacy's Roots N' Blues Series

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A delight for the ears and eyes.......2007-01-04

Old Hat Records always goes the extra mile to present incredibly rare sides from vintage 78s. The sound quality is top-notch, and the generous booklet is packed with equally rare photography, highly-informative notes and thorough documentation.

There are lots of reissues of early recordings, but all the offerings from Old Hat are head and shoulders above the rest.

Sure, the pirates of the world can probably find this material in MP3 format, but despicable thievery aside, they're missing out on the complete package. The music combined with the ample booklet is the true prize. The true value is owning this release, holding it in your hand: listening, reading, viewing the rare photos.

Whether you're a hard-core collector or occasional enthusiast of early recordings of Jazz and Blues, you'll enjoy this truly superlative production.

5 out of 5 stars old time magic........2006-12-26

a wonderful disc of old time fiddle/violin recordings. pianos, guitars, banjos, and vocals also are present on a 24 set of songs that all old time music lovers should possess.

4 out of 5 stars People Music for Real People.......2006-07-27

Inspired by my recent review of Sam Ku West's cd of Hawaiian steel guitar from 1927 and '28, and his version of Memphis Blues contained therein, I decided I need to review Violin, Sing the Blues for Me which contains a killer Memphis Blues by the Mobile Strugglers. Then of course I had to review this, its equally compelling companion disc.

This stuff is history-come-alive. There's a fun tidbit for those folks who still think the blues began with Robert Johnson. Check Wild Cow Blues by Joe Williams' Washboard Singers, recorded in 1935... before RJ's earliest sides. RJ obviously listened to, liked, and studied this side. RJ's iconic vocal phrasings come straight from here, but RJ had the better voice, thus pulling them off more powerfully.

Rukus Juice features some serious fiddling over a hopping groove. Moanin' and Groanin' Blues has the best humming this side of one of the better Grateful Dead Candymans.

You also get Lonnie Johnson. You may largely think of him as one of the best lyricists and guitarists (both 6 and 12-string) the blues have ever known, or as one of the primal jazz guitarists, but had Lonnie gotten tired of the guitar he could have taken Stephane Grappelli's place in the QHCF with little problem. His Memphis Stomp glides and swirls through time in rather astounding fashion. Pre-war Lonnie Johnson was THE MAN. I still don't understand why there isn't a complete boxset of him from 1925-1932. But I digress...

From slow blues drawl, to a track like Peetie Wheatstraw's Throw Me in the Alley, which would have made King Oliver proud. There's a lot of ground covered here, much of it great. Just try to hold still during Doctor Medicine by the South Memphis Jug Band!

The heart and soul of both this and "Violin, Sing..." are the people you probably never heard of. People who may have only recorded a few sides total, and have rarely if ever before been presented on cd. The few tracks by the famous greats can be heard elsewhere, so it's those largely forgotten by time who make this such a gift.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!.......2005-12-05

Well, I completely disagree with the negative review below, and I have a feeling that the gentleman who wrote it, who claims to be a mediocre picker of several instruments, will remain mediocre for his entire life. Fiddle and violin are not the same thing. As the old joke goes, the difference between the two is that you shouldn't spill beer on a violin.

To expect rural and traditional black fiddlers from the Depression to play fiddle like classically trained modern fiddlers like Mark O'Connor or Allison Krauss is like expecting your country Grandma to make Hazelnut-crusted filet of Chilean Seabass with a Pomegranate and Wasabi reduction for Sunday dinner, instead of pot roast and mashed potatoes. It's an absurd expectation. This is the music of real people. Many of these musicians undoubtedly farmed or did other backbreaking labor all week, taking their only joy from the music they'd play on the weekend. Their faithful listeners were in the same boat.

Remember that for many of these recordings, the concept of "jazz" hadn't been invented yet. Bluegrass, for that matter, wouldn't be invented for a couple more decades.

Anyone with a genuine appreciation for American traditional and folk music will love this album. Yes, some of the recording quality is a little bit rough (many of the songs sound like they're playing on an old turntable instead of on a CD), but it's completely listenable, not nearly as difficult to listen to as many other re-released gems from this era. Listen to it with an open mind, and after you've heard the first few tunes, your brain will automatically tune out the static (which is minimal to begin with).

This album is one of the more brilliant re-releases and collections from this era. Get an idea of what real people were listening to and playing in this time period. You'll thank yourself for giving it a try.

1 out of 5 stars If you want to hear "fiddle" music don't buy this!.......2003-04-13

This is a review for normal people. If you are a fan of standard fiddle do not buy this CD. It is a bunch of badly recorded, half hearted, boring and sloppy songs thrown together on an overpriced CD. Save yourself $... or if you like this type of music just go buy some old Little Rascals episodes on DVD. Then you will get the same music you hear on this plus the bonus of the Little Rascals. Now I know why we think of Blues guitar players not fiddle players when this music is discussed. The other reviewers seem to think some of the names on this CD will be familiar to you. Don't believe them, unless names like "Abrew's Portuguese Instrumental Trio" or "Dixieland Jug Blowers" are familiar to you. I am just hoping to prevent normal music lovers from stepping into this pile and losing $... like I did. I play banjo, fiddle, mandolin, dulcimer and guitar all badly, but I could get a gig with these bands and probably improve their sound. If you are the artsy type that digs this kind of stuff and you can't wait to grow a goatee, turn the lights down low, fill the room with smoke (oops, bad for your health), put your sunglasses on and crank this baby up; I hope you don't mind being stuck by yourself all the time because no one else is going to put up with this lousy music. Go find something with Chubby Wise in it if you want to hear some real fiddle playing. Help support some little known, up and coming fiddle players that need to buy food and pay rent with royalty checks by buying their music instead of making these labels, that get this junky music for free or almost free, super rich.

Album Description

Declan McManus Pumps It Up. Joe Bussard. "He's an eccentric record collector who's preserved all sorts of magical corners of music - although he says things like, 'There are no good jazz records made after 1927.'" Elvis Costello - Esquire UK October 2005

"This is the music of poor whites and blacks: wild-ass jazz and string-band hillbilly, surreal yodels and king snake moans, lightning-bolt blues and whorehouse romps and orgasmic gospel. It's all anti-pop, anti-sentimental: the raw sounds of the city gutter and the roadside ditch." Desperate Man Blues by Eddie Dean - Da Capo Best Music Writing 2000

"Joe has spent more than 50 years pursuing his purpose with a single-mindedness bordering on mania. And his purpose is no less than collecting and preserving the vast wealth of American vernacular music that was recorded on fragile shellac discs during the early decades of this century." A Visit and Interview with Record Collector Joseph E. Bussard, Jr by Marshall Wyatt - Old-Time Herald Spring 1999 - oldhatrecords.com/BussardInt.html

24 Rare Gems From The King Of Record Collectors - String Bands, Blues, Jazz, Country, Cajun, Gospel. Profusely illustrated, 28-page full-color booklet includes biographical essay, fully annotated discography, and (online) firsthand accounts of Joe's record collecting adventures. 72 minutes of newly, digitally remastered music. Jewel case, second edition.

Album Description

Re-issued with new packaging, with a 28-page color booklet and offered a new low price. Joe Bussard's Treasure Trove Of Vintage 78s 1926-1937. The 24-track sampler is drawn from longtime radio broadcaster Bussard's fabled collection. The Frederick, MD-based Bussard is said to have more than 25,000 of the rarest early blues, jazz and country 78s, all meticulously catalogued in a basement-cum-vault beneath his house. The triple-fold release comes with a full-color, 72-page booklet filled with funny stories about Bussard's door-knocking searches for old shellac, more than 40 photos and complete annotation.

Sell your shoes cause your goin to heaven after you play this one! You can finally say you've heard it all. Top drawer assemblage of roots, blues, and just plain fun. Uncle Joe say it ain't so... give us another, PLEASE!

4 out of 5 stars terrific collection of early songs.......2007-02-13

If you're interested in the history of US music, as I am, you'll find this a fine addition. Cleaned up as well as can be expected but still some hum & hiss...but not enough to be distracting.

5 out of 5 stars another great release from OLD HAT........2006-12-26

everything i've ever bought on the old hat label has been fantastic, and this is no exception. a must have disc for fans of old time music. and if you have no old time music discs, this would be as good a place as any to start with. great sound and a variety of musical styles make this disc a complete winner.

5 out of 5 stars Will Interest Lovers of Roots Music.......2006-07-15

A generous 24-track helping of some of record collector extraordinare Joe Bussard's favorites. The examples included run the gamut of early 20th centruy roots music ranging from Hillybilly music to Blues, Jazz, Jug Bands and beyond.

Sound quality is top notch -- these guys really know how to do 78-RPM transfers. Also Joe's records seem to be in excellent condition to begin with so not a lot of noise reduction is required. This is one of the very finest sounding discs of 78-RPM transfers that I have heard.

Packaging is also lavish with a 70 page booklet that contains annotations for each of the 24 tracks, and lots of interesting photos of vintage record labels and packaging, as well as several essays and stories about Joe's record collecting career. There's much of interest here for those who love Roots music.

4 out of 5 stars A total package .......2006-02-04

I had not heard of Joe Bussard before this collection though I consider myself an avid music enthusiast and budding collector. After having heard this disc (and having read the extensive liner notes) I'm more than a little green with envy over Bussard's collection.

This disc collects some of Joe's personal favourites with names more familiar (Big Bill Broonzy, Gene Autry, Uncle Dave Macon) and some that will prove obscure to all but the most investigative record collectors (A.A. Gray and Seven-Foot Dilly, Fields Ward and the Grayson County Railsplitters, The Stripling Brothers). It's also cross-genre so if you only like country, or only blues, or only gospel, this will not be the collection for you.

Besides the songs themselves, which would be enough to make this a good buy, the packaging tells you a lot about WHO Bussard is (been collecting records since 12, once ran a pirate radio station), WHY he collects ("You ever smell the sleeves? They got that real funny wood smell to 'em.") along with some great stories about the "finds" he's made over the years. He's enough of a character that I'd love to watch the documentary about him. You also get brief bios for each of the performers included (a paragraph or two) as a nice bonus.

HIGHLIGHTS:
Twin fiddle workout "The Lost Child" has served as the radio theme for Bussard for years and I can see why. It's a keeper that alternates smooth fiddling with some nice staccato that implies the child might be "skipping" at play. Jazz-blues "The (New) Call of the Freaks" has an insistent chorus ("Stick out your cans/Here come the garbageman...") while Blind Gary (AKA Rev. Gary Davis) does a great gospel blues sermonette in "You Got to Go Down" ("You got to learn how to treat everybody/cuz you got to go down...ashes to ashes and dust to dust"). Charley Jordan's risque blues "Keep it Clean" is a standout as well. Autry's "Atlanta Bound" is far from the cheerful image of the man who sang "Rudolph": he's promising to kill the "rounder" who's dallying with his wife.

LOWS:
The only tune here I found unlistenable is the gratingly off-key family gospel tune "Give the World a Smile" by the Corley Family. Despite the nice sentimental lyric, I just couldn't stomach the singers themselves.

BOTTOM LINE:
If you have an interest in early music that's not restrictive to a single style, this is a very nice collection with some gems that would otherwise be lost.

5 out of 5 stars Great Grape!.......2007-07-06

These guys were the quintessinal San Francisco Band - even though they co-existed with the Dead and the Airplane (not to mention Quicksilver), they had it all as musicians, singers, and writers. Too bad they were poorly marketed - I believe that their debut album came out as the same time as Sgt. Pepper in '67. In fact, I vaguely remember buying both in May or June of that year. These guys could play Blues, Rock, Country, Jazz, - even Swing - you name it, they could play it - and played it well they did. But, if I can paraphrase the CD's pamphlet, bad timing and marketing ruined them right from the start. Just give this a listen and you'll be hooked - their songs don't even sound dated - and they range in tempo and key - each one is completely different and enjoyable. I would consider the Grape as one of the best, if not the best, unsung heros of rock and roll. If you listen to these two CDs and walk away unimpressed, then it is my opinion that you are absolutely deaf.

5 out of 5 stars Its nice to have all this Grape in one place!.......2006-04-08

The San Francisco group "Moby Grape" consisted of 5 talented singer-songwriting musicians who blended rock, soul, country, blues and folk. Their self-titled debut album was stunning and definitely deserves it's classic status.
Unfortunately a few factors worked against the group: the wide diversity of styles set them apart from their contemporaries but probably alienated some listeners; they were also way over-hyped and they had such an odd blend of personalities (particularly the unstable Skip Spence).
It can't be denied that their musical output after the first album was a very mixed bag, but despite the fact that they never got close to matching the quality of the first record every album contains some excellent music. This is why a retrospective like this is the best way to appreciate their music. It's especially good for those new to the group and fans like me who have a bunch of old LP's and have longed for a compilation of their better material.
Thankfully, most of the "good stuff" is here, including the entire debut album, some rarities and a few curiosities. The individual members are well represented: lead guitarist Jerry Miller shines on songs like "Can't Be So Bad" and "Miller's Blues" and he shares the songwriting credit along with drummer Don Stevenson on some of their best songs like "Hey Grandma", "8:05", "Ain't No Use" and "Murder in My Heart For the Judge". (It's also no surprise that many place Miller in the same guitar league as Hendrix, Santana and Bloomfield). Bass player Bob Mosley's soulful voice is dynomite on "Mr. Blues", "Murder In My Heart.." and "Truckin' Man". Peter Lewis(son of the late movie-TV star Loretta Young) is probably the best singer-songwriter in the group and is great on "Ain't That a Shame", "Sittin' By The Window", "Right Before My Eyes" and uses his unique vocal vibrato to good effect on "What's To Choose". Last but not least creative and unhinged Skip Spence rocks on the classic "Omaha", does a nice live version of "Changes" and has 2 different versions of his strange "Seeing".
Individually they were all talented, but when they really gelled as a group it would be hard to find a better rhythm section and 3 guitars that blended so well. You then add vocal harmonies that can positively give you the chills and you've got Moby Grape at it's best.
The one thing this CD can't reproduce is the adrenaline rush of seeing the group live; Mosley with his bass hanging down to his knees, Miller all over his hollow bodied electric guitar, the 4 and 5 part harmonies and, although he was never my favorite on record, in concert the whirling dervish Skip Spence always stole the show.

4 out of 5 stars see all the other reviews for the history lesson.......2005-11-06

The Summer of Love was not easy on all of its revellers, regardless of their innate musical brilliance. Moby Grape definitely got the short end of the stick.

Considering the musicality of such catchy rock numbers as the quick-fingered "Aint No Use" or the resolute "I Am Not Willing," it's stunning their name isn't dropped more frequently with the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, or even Quicksilver Messenger Service. They could rock harder than most of their contemporaries, often were more delicate and concise too, and had the added firepower of 3-part vocal harmonies which put them in a league with the Byrds.

All the right ingredients can be present and still not result in success or acclaim. These are the hits you never heard, and an unfiltered taste of the San Francisco sound in the late sixties.

4 out of 5 stars as hard as this was to get my hands on..........2004-08-05

...i expected more.

so what is this> this is a 2-disc package of moby grape's good stuff. everything you need in one place. moby grape was the 60s san francisco psychedelic band you never heard, but it was also arguably the best. buffalo springfield, creedence clearwater (admittedly a far superior band), grateful dead, all of these SF bands went on to attain worldwide fame, and though moby grape should've been neck and neck with them, terrible management, misdirected promotion, and inner turmoil destroyed them before they even had a chance. the debut album, included here in its entirity, is considered one of the greatest albums of the 60s, indeed, one of the greatest debut albums of all time. and it is very good, but i've never been a huge fan of harmonized vocals...i much prefer a single prominent lead singer. nonetheless, this is a near-perfect record. the rest of the stuff is good too, and some of it i like even more, as they eventually drifted away from the harmonies-only approach. if you like the grateful dead and buffalo springfield and crosby stills & nash, you'll like this even more.

4 out of 5 stars Rich, but imperfect anthology.......2002-11-03

There's a certain ironic consistency in this anthology being a slight misfire. Given the long-string of events that negatively affected the band's commercial fortunes, a perfectly realized retrospective would almost be unfitting. Still, given that the Grape's first three albums are currently only available from the band's former manager (and arch nemesis) Matthew Katz on his Los Angeles-based San Francisco Sound label, and that the debut lists for a ridiculous price (and the reproduction of "Wow/Grape Jam" is incomplete), hunting down a copy of this out-of-print 1993 collection is still your best (and perhaps most morally fulfilling) bet.

Though compilation producer Bob Irwin (who now heads Sundazed records) is an obvious Moby Grape enthusiast (as is David Fricke, who wrote the excellent liner notes), some of his choices for this collection are hard to understand. Of particular consequence is the reproduction of the first album in its entirety (good!), but with bits and pieces of studio chatter inserted here and there (very, very bad). The debut was a beautifully produced and tightly crafted package, and the additions are hugely distracting. The inclusion of original mono single versions is a nice touch, especially given that producer David Rubinson's stereo mixes reproduce poorly in mono.

The selections from the remaining Grape albums leave out a few key tracks, such as "Three-Four" from the "Wow" album, and virtually all of "Truly Fine Citizen" (a contractual obligation recording, but still valued by Grape fans). What's here is excellent, and serves as both a fine introduction and fitting reminder of the Grape's greatness. The demos and live tracks are nice additions to the Grape canon, but they're no substitute for having complete, unenhanced, versions of the albums available. This 2-CD set is out-of-print in the U.S., but can still be found used on Amazon's U.S. site, and new on Amazon's U.K. site ....

5 out of 5 stars Music that makes you smile.......2007-05-27

I discovered Miss Shay as a boy in the late 1950's when I found a 78 rpm album a family member owned. My reaction has not change 50 years later-the songs are funny little commentaries on life and love and "sophisticated" despite being from the 1940's. Don't be fooled by the moniker "Park Avenue Hillbilly" because the backround orchestration is a dance band setting, not fiddles and gee-tars. Enjoy! There is very little duplication of the tracks contained on the recent Sepia lable CD.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the waiting.......2007-01-14

Finally a substantial collection of Dorothy Shay's songs. The sound quality is great and most of my favorite comedy songs are here. Every since I wore out my mother's 78's of "Agnes Clung" and "It's the Little Things That Count", I hoped that Dorothy Shay's musical humor would be reissued in a quality package, and now it's happened. The collection, "Park Avenue Hillbillies and West End Cowboys" did a good job of remastering but only about half of the songs on it were Dorothy Shay's. This has a lot more of the most popular songs she sang. A treat for anyone who enjoys combining good music and good humor.

This is the best new young group I have heard in years. If they aren't HUGE soon, what a waste of talent that will be. This is like city meets country - love meets lust meets angst - all wrapped up in the some of the most poetic lyrics i have heard. And Daniel Ahearn, the lead poet-singer, is really gorgeous!!

-Loving them in NYC

5 out of 5 stars Sophisticated, like country music in 2035.......2004-04-27

An exquisitely crafted collection of songs. I bought this record the other day after hearing about them on NPR's Weekend Edition and I am just blown away. Lives up to the billing, for sure!

4 out of 5 stars more like short stories than music.......2004-04-26

ill lit's second full-length, i need you., combines the melancholy-drifter sounds of Americana - lonesome acoustic guitars, on-the-verge-of-tears vocals and strong melodies. The lyrics on i need you. provide such detail that they almost seem more like short stories than music. This is an album for anyone who has ever felt lost; ill lit might not help you get found, but it will give you some beautiful songs to light the way. R.I.Y.L.: Will Oldham, Beth Orton, Clem Snide

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Collection Series-Slim Whitman.......2007-03-09

I was very pleased with both the product and the service.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks, Tim B.!.......2006-02-22

After viewing my "Mars Attacks" DVD (I hadn't seen the movie during it's theatrical release), I HAD to push the "pause" button when the music credits rolled over the screen. At first I thought Tim B.'s final weapon against agressive little green marsians was some special effect, recorded solely for the movie... and then, searching Amazon on the words "Slim Whitman", I got THIS! Really amazing, voice AND style: this man apparently sang without overacting nor pouring out of tons of jelly: just plain goodhearted singing. Especially the teaming up with the electric Hawaiian steel guitar results in a really "outer space" sound... OK, the high end of those amazing sounds tends to have some distortion, especially on the oldest records, but still... probably the recording equipment of those days simply wasn't made for such extremes...

5 out of 5 stars old school whitman at his finest!.......2001-08-24

before you consider buying any slim, i suggest you go no further than his early recordings. the man simply lays down the maddest tracks on this album. i am not even a country fan, but slim nails it on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing and comforting.......2000-10-05

Slim Whitman is a wonderful singer. His voice is unique, as is his wonderful yodeling style. The music itself is from the good old days and is quite peppy and positive. I find that I feel very good when I listen to his music. The style is amazingly simple, but simplicity often improves things. Even his songs that are supposed to be sad have a happy sound to them. You can hear pre-rock-and-roll or early rockabilly style in some of the songs, since these were made in the late 40's and early 50's.

I love every song on this album. I'm sure his other albums are also excellent.

I highly recommend this album!

Album Description

What is your favourite Sunday morning record? "I like old recordings. I love the things Joe Bussard puts out - he's preserving a lot of corners of music that are precious, mountain music, jazz, blues, music that was on 78. I dig that." Elvis Costello - MOJO Dec 2005

Profusely illustrated, 72-page full-color booklet includes biographical essay, fully annotated discography, and firsthand accounts of Joe's record collecting adventures. 72 minutes of digitally remastered music.

5 out of 5 stars ear candy.......2007-06-26
