Trisha Yearwood's fourth album leaves its often-spotty predecessors in the dust. After two lighter-weight opening tracks--the title cut and the smash "XXX's and OOO's (An American Girl)," both of which topped the country charts--Yearwood settles into her moodiest set of songs yet. Most perfectly delivered is "You Can Sleep While I Drive"; here, Yearwood tones down the overkill of Melissa Etheridge's original to stress the lyrics' complex mesh of aching resignation. Similarly, "Those Words We Said" and her version of Tammy Wynette's "Till I Get It Right" are near-great vocal performances--not just on the technical side, but in the arena where the subtleties of true emotion meet topflight material. Even the requisite tough-girl offerings, "The Restless Kind" and "I Wanna Go Too Far," fit perfectly into this portrait of a smart, modern countrypolitan woman. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2007-06-08

After buying this CD, I became a life-long Trisha fan. Words, emotional power, and musical accompaniments and arrangements transcend mere singing ability. I have seriously listened to this entire CD over and over for days on end.

5 out of 5 stars Every cut a good one.......2004-05-06

This CD is one you can put in and leave. Every cut is incredible. "On a Bus to St. Cloud" touches the heart like very few songs can. If you have ever loved and lost and do not feel moved by this song, your soul is empty.

5 out of 5 stars A classy singer does it again.......2004-03-06

Trisha is one of the most intelligent singers in the business - she could have had a very successful career outside music, if she had never made it as a singer. Trisha realized very early that, providing she included a couple of radio-friendly songs to keep the hits coming, she could fill the rest of each album with songs that she really wanted to record. The results are clear for all to hear on this set, which opens with two catchy songs (the title track and XXX's and OOO's) that both reached number one on the country charts, but then continues with a series of reflective ballads that demonstrate Trisha's true artistry, interrupted by just two more up-tempo songs, Restless kind and I wanna go too far. Highway 101 had previously recorded Restless kind when Nikki Nelson was their lead singer, for their Bing bang boom album. Later, Travis Tritt also covered the song.

Perhaps the best of the ballads are You can sleep while I drive (a cover of a Melissa Etheridge song) and On a bus to St Cloud (written by the brilliant songwriter and under-rated singer, Gretchen Peters). Trisha also does excellent covers of Those words we said (Kim Richey) and Till I get it right (Tammy Wynette). Fairytale (another wonderful song) is an original although I've heard other songs with the same title. O Mexico is yet another brilliant song.

This album was originally issued in Europe with three extra tracks - Two days from knowing, Jackie's house and Bartender blues (a duet with George Jones that appeared on his album, Bradley barn sessions). That edition, which I have, is no longer available. The Australian edition includes all those tracks plus Save the land. If you are fortunate enough to be able to track down one of those editions, you are in for a real treat. If not, there is still plenty worth hearing in the standard American edition.

This album provides a great introduction to Trisha's music and is definitely one of her finest original albums.

4 out of 5 stars On A Bus To St Cloud.......2002-08-05

Trisha Yearwood's 1995 album THINKIN ABOUT YOU is often overlooked, which is a shame. Many know it for its hits, like the title track and "XXX's and OOO's (An American Girl)", which both fared well on country charts. Those are great songs, but only the tip of the iceberg. Sadly only those two singles performed well on the charts, the others simply crashed and burned. Other singles included her cover of Melissa Etheridge's "You Can Sleep While I Drive", the Gretchen Peters written "On A Bus To St. Cloud", and the uptempo "I Wanna Go Too Far". Yearwood turns in powerful performances on "You Can Sleep While I Drive" and "On A Bus To St. Cloud", which are arguably the best songs on this album. A few tracks here are remakes, such as Trisha's version of the Tammy Wynette classic "Till I Get It Right". Travis Tritt later redid "The Restless Kind" for his 1996 album of the same name, but Trisha's version has a certain spunk to it. Other highlights include the regretful "Those Words We Said", and "O Mexico" and "Fairytale". Overall give this album a listen, might not be her best but don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Rita Coolidge--always awesome!.......2003-02-13

Singer, songwriter Rita Coolidge & Norah Jones plumb the same musical depths, the same vocal geography. Rita Coolidge fans will not be disappointed. This voice, this woman is a national treasure. Her range, texture, phrasing & versatility around jazz ballads, R&B, blues, & country crossover, are awesome. She leaves you with the sense of polyphonic harmony in a single note. Hopefully her full repetoire will be available again, but this CD with others: Out of the Blues, & the Universal Masters Collection, are a great example of her range. Also recommended with Kris Kristofferson are: Breakaway, & Natural Act. Her soaring voice always leaves me wanting to hear more & more! Although love is the theme here, the delivery & pacing are varied & new. Some literary giant said, "Love is the only story." She's a storyteller. More please.

5 out of 5 stars She wasn't for sale!!.......2002-08-23

I have loved Rita since I first walked into a music shop and heard her singing "Whiskey Whiskey" from the album This Lady is Not For Sale. Listening to her was like having a good friend with me on those off days. She is one in a million. By the way, if anyone has any idea where to find "This Lady is Not For sale" on CD please contact me. Find me at: ... I would be in your debt... Yeah for Rita..

3 out of 5 stars Better Then Most........1999-06-25

The latest from Rita Coolidge finds her still stuck a little too firmly in a middle of the road, adult contemporary formula. The song titles pretty much tell it all, with 6 out of 11 tracks having some variation of the word "love" in their title. Is love all there is to sing about? With the exception of "Love Without Mercy", written by Mike Reid, writer of Bonnie Raitt's hit "I Can't Make You Love Me", and "What's It Gonna Be", written by little known but highly acclaimed singer / songwriter Essra Mohawk, there are no noteworthy songwriters contributing material here. Rita should follow the example of Joan Baez, whose latest cd is all material written by some the best young songwriters in contemporary Americana music. With all that said, THINKIN' ABOUT YOU is still Rita's best effort in years. The musicianship is excellent, and Rita is in fine voice, delivering some strong vocal performances. The first half of the cd is better then the second, the two standout tracks being "Love Without Mercy", the torchy Raitt-like ballad, and "Without Love", a gospel flavored rocker with Rita returning to her baptist church roots. The title track is a real loser, but the cd closes on a high note, with the beautiful, piano-driven ballad "I'll Remember You." This is the closest Rita has come in a long while to recording the kind of songs she did on her first few albums, when she covered Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Graham Nash, Kris Kristofferson and some really fine songwriters. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Rita still has it........1998-10-01

I thought the #10 track was the best song on the album. It should get radio play. "EVERYBODY NEEDS" really shows off Ritas talent.
