5 out of 5 stars Best Single Disc of Tammy's Solo Hits, But Far From Complete.......2003-07-25

Tammy Wynette was the country queen of unstable domesticity. Her tear-stained voice conveyed the effects a rocky marriage has on the kids in such sagas as "D-I-V-O-R-C-E," "Bedtime Story," "I Don't Wanna Play House," and "Kids Say The Darndest Things." She'd try her best to make a relationship work, as evidenced on her signature tune "Stand By Your Man" and "Run Woman Run," but when that wasn't ultimately possible, she would resign herself to getting on with her life the best way she knew how, be it hesitantly ("Til I Can Make It On My Own," "Til I Get It Right"), regretfully ("One Of A Kind," "You And Me"), or defiantly ("Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad"). Tammy did record quite a few thoroughly upbeat hits, such as the rousing "Good Lovin' (Makes It Right)" and "Singing My Song," but it is the heartbreakers that Tammy did better than anyone and for which she will always be associated.

This collection - the strongest single Wynette disc available - contains twenty of her best solo singles - including all of those mentioned above - released between 1966 (her debut "Apartment # 9") and 1978 (the defiant "Womanhood"), the lone major omission from this period being her spinetingling "Another Lonely Song." Thus, none of her celebrated collaborations with George Jones (get their collection 16 Biggest Hits) or even David Houston (on "My Elusive Dreams") are found here, nor such latterday solo toe-tappers as 1979's "They Call It Making Love" and 1982's "Another Chance." Until an expanded single disc of Tammy's best comes along, the only place to get all of these recordings in one place is her box set Tears of Fire (which contains a lot of filler).

4 out of 5 stars One Of A Kind.......2006-11-04

As I have stated before in my review of the soundtrack to "Walk The Line", I am not a fan of country music. But once again a movie has made me take a detour into that territory. Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man" is played during the opening credits of the film "Five Easy Pieces", and other Tammy songs are featured in the film. After seeing it a couple of times, I couldn't get her music out of my head, so I bought this CD. I have to admit that I like every song to some degree, and I attribute this to Tammy's vocal skills. She takes you into her world of love and heartbreak in and out of apartments and barrooms, and makes you see it and feel it. I especially like "D-I-V-O-R-C-E", with its clever use of spelled-out words, which Tammy handles superbly. I also want to mention the excellent harmony she contributes in the duet with David Houston, "My Elusive Dreams". Tammy makes all of this sound so easy, and I'm sure it isn't. If it was, we'd have 100 Tammy Wynettes, but, nope, there is only one.

5 out of 5 stars The Album That Made Her.......1998-07-25

This is the album that made Tammy Wynette THE FIRST LADY OF COUNTRY MUSIC. It would out sell any other album ever released by a female vocalist in country music and would go on to become the first to pass the one million sales mark. This album is the utlimate Tammy Wynette collection. Eleven tracks of pure musical delight! This album should come with a warning, though! Once you have listened to this one, you will not be able to stop. The sound of Tammy Wynette will be in your mind forever!

      5 out of 5 stars What's Not to Like?.......2002-11-12

What's Not to Like? Nothing! It's still the President and First Lady, though this time it's at the twilight of their musical times together. The CD contains the final 2 of their duet chart hits (according to Billboard): "Two Story House" and "A Pair of Old Sneakers". There is also a good rendition of Tammy's earlier duet with David Houston; "My Elusive Dreams". That had been her first #1 song. Other notable tracks are the often recorded "Just Someone I Used to Know", a playful "Did You Ever?" and a true Tammy and George song- "A Lovely Place to Cry". (What Good is That Mansion Without a Little Love?) Fans of the President and First Lady won't go wrong with volume 2. What a special chemistry they had! Those unfamiliar with this pair are urged to try at least one of their albums, though "GH" volume 1 may be a slightly safer choice.

4 out of 5 stars They're NOT Hits - But They ARE Great!.......1998-09-24

The only real hit single on this CD is TWO STORY HOUSE. WE'RE JUST A PAIR OF OLD SNEAKERS, the follow-up release, failed to top the charts. And the rest of the material is mostly album cuts from George and Tammy's numerous EPIC albums. Unlike their Greatest Hits Vol. One (which was filled with chart topping singles), Vol. Two offers fewer hits but at the same time some fantastic performances from one of country music's best loved duos.

At the end of 1971, George Jones signed a 10-year contract with Epic Records, where Tammy Wynette was enjoying the peak of her career with Billy Sherrill. By then, Jones's hard-country style had fallen out of favor, and in part to soften his clenched-teeth delivery, the producer paired him with Wynette, who rounded her hard, strident delivery with sensuous lower tones. Jones's unconventional style--alternately stretching or biting off the ends of his phrases, and sliding from one end of his register to the other--was hard to follow, and Wynette learned to read her cues in body language. A dipped chin meant he was going for a low note, a tipped head signaled he was aiming high. But Wynette did more than just hang on. The combination made them the President and First Lady of country music during their six years of marriage (1969-75), and their musical partnership took them to the top of the singles charts three times: "We're Gonna Hold On," "Golden Ring," "Near You." When the storybook romance ended, the mood of the duets changed from devoted love to restrained anguish. Every country fan wept. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars The Jones and Wynette set.......2004-02-14

this GOLD album {the 1977 vinyl didn't go GOLD...it was a combination of those sales and the sales of the CD re-issue that put it over 500,000 sold}. But, this is George Jones and Tammy Wynette. Since when did record sales mean THAT much to listeners and fans? The material on this CD ranges from 1971-1977. George and Tammy enjoyed a streak of hit duets that ran from 1971-1981, the same time span of Conway and Loretta. however, George and Tammy were married and their singles reflected what the public assumed their private life was like. Because the duo could get so personal sounding, many of their songs were written exclusively for them by Billy Sherrill, Norro Wilson, Carmol Taylor, and ironically George Richey (Tammy would end up marrying Richey in the late '70s). Also, because of this personalization of their solo and duet recordings, it sent the sales of their singles through the roof. There are 7 Top-10 hits on here and 3 hits that charted below the Top-10. Unlike Conway and Loretta, the duo of George and Tammy issued singles that would over-lap with solo songs and they eventually fell victim at country radio to what Conway and Loretta avoided: over-exposure to the point that it causes a DJ or a listener to quickly refuse to hear someone again. If you'll notice, a lot of their singles charted lower than their popularity suggested because of the DJ's resistance to play them. For the casual fans not interested in hearing the complete duet hits of the couple, this 1977 album does the job because it showcases all of their classic hits from 1971's "Take Me" to 1977's "Southern California". the only single from the 1971-1977 era that's missing is "Old Fashioned Singing", a gospel song. Their 1980/1981 hits, "Two Story House" and "A Pair of Old Sneakers" are missing of course and they can be found on the Epic release 16 BIGGEST HITS.

I own 6 Tammy and George CDs but this is the cream of the crop. I can't explain why I prefer them singing together, but not separately. What a strange chemistry must have percolated between them!. And what was life like at home? High points are "Golden Ring", "Near You", "We're Not the Jet Set" and "The Ceremony". Tammy and George fans can buy this CD without reservation. Country fans unfamiliar with the great, "classic" male/female duets such as Conway/Loretta or Dolly/Porter owe it to themselves to listen to at least one such album. I can think of no better choice than this.
