Editorial Reviews

Where so many duet projects seem like shotgun marriages, this one sounds like a labor of love, celebrating Southern music as a common denominator that transcends racial and categorical divides. Among the highlights, the pairing of Lyle Lovett and Al Green finds revelation within the funky groove of "Funny How Time Slips Away," while the album-closing "Patches"--with George Jones playing father to B.B. King's son--achieves a spine-tingling majesty. Though Natalie Cole and Reba McEntire misconnect on "Since I Fell for You," Sam Moore (of Sam & Dave) and the late Conway Twitty are at their soulful best on "Rainy Night in Georgia." --Don McLeese

Hard as it is to go wrong when shopping for a Brother Ray package, some career-spanning compilations bundle the decades better than others. Count this one, true to its title, among the very best. The track sequencing is straight-up chronological, opening with 1954's groundbreaking blues and gospel mingling "I've Got a Woman." From there it charges through the late-'50s Atlantic era, rounding up classic singles like "Hallelujah (I Love Her So)," "(Night Time Is) The Right Time," and "What'd I Say." By the time the disc lands us in the '60s, the Genius has saddled up to explore his country side, turning in such popular-music-altering hits as "Georgia on My Mind" and "I Can't Stop Loving You." A final cut jumps into the '80s for the Willie Nelson duet "Seven Spanish Angels," leaving the listener with a solid--and deeply satisfying--sense of Charles' bold artistic wanderings. All that's missing is his soul-dunked rendition of "America the Beautiful." -Tammy La Gorce

Great CD for those who love blues and Ray Charles who has a bit of rock `n roll. All the songs somehow relate to women, heartbreak and good times. Cheaper than the Starbucks edition or Ray cd.

Substitute grits for glitz, soul for sheen, and wry humor for mythic self-regard, and the Amazing Rhythm Aces could have been the Eagles. Though they didn't fly as high commercially, the Aces' blend of rock, country, down-home rhythm & blues, and even gospel continues to satisfy on this combo reissue of the band's first two mid-'70s albums. "Third Rate Romance" remains the Memphis band's signature song and major pop hit, while "The End Is Not in Sight (The Cowboy Tune)" anticipated the changes in commercial country a couple of decades down the road. Rhythm aside, the key to the band's appeal is frontman Russell Smith, whose songs and singing transcend musical boundaries with amazing grace. --Don McLeese

Solomon Burke's return to country is as much a spiritual renewal as it is a reinterpretation of some of Nashville's greatest mainstream and Americana songs. The 66-year old King of Rock & Soul has always plied the gospel, of course, but Music City sometimes forgets to feel it in its bones. Buddy Miller, whose gritty hillbilly pleadings always carry a healthy dose of otherworldly soulfulness, is the right producer to bring it all together, since he invites such sidemen as Sam Bush, Kenny Vaughan, and Byron House, as well as guests/duet partners Patty Griffin, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, and Patty Loveless. This is the kind of album that clicks right off but continues to grow on you, such greasy, rolling blues-rock songs as Paul Kennerley and Barry Tashian's "Honey, Where's the Money Gone" loosening up your sacroiliac and Griffin's affecting "Up to the Mountain" morphing into a secular hymn in Burke's big hands. Not everything completely jells: The R&B chorines on "Vicious Circle" jar next to Miller's plinking banjo and Li'l Abner framework, and this rendition of his searing "Does My Ring Burn Your Finger" cries out for wife Julie's songbird harmonies. But when everybody sets their mouth right--as on Burke's duet with Harris on the George Jones/Tammy Wynette classic "We're Gonna Hold On"--the seas nearly part. Throw in some cockiness from the delightfully twisted psyche of Jim Lauderdale ("Seems Like You're Gonna Take Me Back") and Vaughan's blistering chicken-pickin' electric guitar, and lawdy, momma, ain't that good news today! --Alanna Nash

Album Description

Solomon Burke, the King of Rock & Soul, completes his 21st century trilogy with Nashville, a collection of country songs produced by Buddy Miller and recorded at his Nashville home. Solomon returns to one of his first loves, country music, after the GRAMMY® Award-winning Don't Give Up On Me and the GRAMMY®-nominated Make Do With What You Got. (His breakthrough '60s singles on Atlantic Records were in a country vein.)

Nashville contains Solomon's soulful versions of classic country and country-tinged songs (by Tom T. Hall, George Jones, Dolly Parton, Bruce Springsteen, Don Williams, and others) and previously unrecorded soon-to-be standards by Patty Griffin and Gillian Welch, who also contribute vocals. Country divas Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, and Patty Loveless also make guest vocal appearances. It all adds up to one of the most affecting marriages of country and soul ever recorded.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-03-16

I ordered this after reading that a critic reveiwed it as the best country album of the year. I was very disappointed. I didn't like the content at all, and the production sounded low-grade. For blues-based Americana, order MoFro instead.

5 out of 5 stars Best Yet From Mr. Burke.......2007-02-23

Solomon Burke has always had things to teach. The soul he brought to "If you Need Me" 45 years ago, and "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love" had a profound impact on the Rolling Stones' early work. He could tease the listener a bit, and preach the truth on a sober Sunday morning. The struggle through those early recordings came from being hamstrung by the limited backup arrangements.

Those days are gone. Solomon's voice soars over the acoustic charts used for "That's How I Got To Memphis" and "Valley Of Tears", and punches straight to the heart asking, "Honey Where's The Money Gone". He brings a seasoned reflection to Springsteen's "Ain't Got You" that steps across the decades since the Basie band had Joe Williams shouting to throw him "Smack Dab In The Middle". Each track here engages the vocalist with smart country instrumentalists and vivid duets. It's a triumph all around.

Jagger and Richards (and Brian Jones) brought pointed, fresh guitar arrangements to their early albums, taking Solomon Burke's truth and transforming the genre. With "Nashville" we find lots more to learn from a master.

5 out of 5 stars King Soloman.......2007-02-21

Every song is Great, The Duets are even Better. Hold On with Emmylou Harris is worth the price of theCD.

5 out of 5 stars Nashville or Memphis?.......2007-02-04

I take issue only with the title of Solomon Burke's latest recording. In the company of Buddy Miller, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and other esteemed Nashville artists, it sounds appropriate to title Burke's release "Nashville." However, a better title might be "From Memphis to Nashville," since Burke finds a sublime tone on this recording that mixes the soulfulness of the best of Memphis blues with the plaintiveness of traditional Nashville country. Whatever you call it, though, Burke is in excellent form on this CD and he works very well with artists as diverse as Welch and Parton. Great credit goes to all involved, especially to Burke and Buddy Miller. They know how to make the Memphis and Nashville sounds bring out the best in each other.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Satisfying.......2007-01-08

Love this entire CD. One of my new favorites from start to finish. Fabulous musicians, unbelievable singing. Cannot say enough about this album!

Solomon Burke fans should do themselves a huge favor and also pick up his "Nashville" disc.

3 out of 5 stars esoteric.......2006-08-07

i have a feeling anyone that really is into Burke's music would love this cd. i dont admit to anyone that im not a big fan becuase i get the usual "oh my god what are you talking about solomon burke is amazing." well sorry im only a casual listener at this point and this cd doesnt really do it for me. i bought it for one track "cry to me" and the sound of the CD is much different then the sound that amazon offers as a clip. i can only imagine people that are really into his music loving this as one of their favorites becuase of the true to life sound the album went out of its way to achieve.

5 out of 5 stars Solomon's Gold Mine.......2005-08-22

The 'Bishop of Soul' serves up a service of pure musical salvation here: from the Country number 'Just Out Of Reach' to the classic 'Everybody Needs Somebody To Love' (as covered in the movie 'The Blues Brothers'). These tracks have been lovingly restored from the original single recording sessions, with all their raw power, but also with a good sound balance.

This CD pulses with soul: tight brass, great harmonies, and emotive singing by Burke. If you have Otis, Wilson, James Carr, and Aretha in your collection 'The Very Best of Solomon Burke' is a 'must have'.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Tune in "Dirty Dancing".......2004-09-30

"Cry to Me" would have been a not-so-oldie in the year portrayed in "Dirty Dancing". It was used to great effect for Johnny and "Baby's" first lovemaking session (tastefully) but did not appear on the first soundtrack release which it deserved. It is Solomon Burke at his best. (The man also appeared in a cameo role in the movie, "The Big Easy".) He has continued recording 40 years or more after "Cry to Me", the definitive version, was released. The block of music in this album is a great moodsetter. Dim the lights and let the passion of the tunes flood over you.

Atlantic Records has ridden musical trends since the late '40s; these seven CDs chronicle the first 28 years of the label's work in black pop, during which artists such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Otis Redding oversaw the creation and flowering of soul music. Also included are classic tracks by the Drifters, Wilson Pickett, Ruth Brown, the Coasters, Sam & Dave, and many others who walk through the dreams of R&B and rock & roll fans. --Rickey Wright

1 out of 5 stars Lost Opportunity.......2007-03-24

The problem with this collection is not the music selected - a look at the tracks will show that. However, the sound quality is abysmal. I owned many of these songs as 45s and the music would often jump right out of the speakers. This collection sounds dull and lifeless. Atlantic used the master tapes made for the vinyl version released in the 80s, with all the limiting and compression needed to squeeze the music onto an LP intact. The rhythmic, driving quality of the bass is bled away along with the highs. A complete disappointment. Demand a refund.

3 out of 5 stars Damaged Goods.......2007-03-15

Disappointed to find that a selection like this is sent in a damaged state with scratches and scuffs to the CD box when the outer cardboard box is in excellent condition.

5 out of 5 stars essential.......2007-03-10

any serious music fan should have this. a shocking amount of great, great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Une magnifique compilation.......2007-02-14

5 out of 5 stars The real R&B sound !.......2007-02-02

Very good CD's set. Buy a part of the R&B of the 20th century with these discs and get back in these fines years! I can listen to very famous tracks, and many more I have discovered with a lot of pleasure. This set is boxed like a LP set. It failed by contening only 8 dics ;-)

It's the sounds you remembered and loved. It's nothing you've never heard before but it's something you haven't heard in a while. Classic Aces-- what more can you say? I've still got it in vinyl but it never sounded this good.

5 out of 5 stars Toucan Do It Too/Burning the Ballroom Down.......2007-02-06

Two of the top Three albums this group made. Maybe the top 2.
The musicianship heard here is rarely felt or heard today.
The only thing that was ever bad about these albums,
was they did not get publicized well enough.

5 out of 5 stars Toucan Do It Too/Burning the Ballroom Down.......2006-11-06

The Amazing Rhythm Aces are still Amazing! I enjoyed them in the 70"s and now I can enjoy them again. It's great that the old albums are out on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Why don't you own this?.......2005-08-21

This, fellow ARA fans, is the real thing. The recordings are clear, the production very good and the songs are just as good as we remembered. There have been other recordings released on CD which should have never seen the light of day due to terrible original recordings, but don't worry this time. These recordings are a delight!

The Combination of "Stacked Deck" and "Too Stuffed to Jump" may overwhelm some people into thinking they have all of the classic ARA music if they own that CD. This is understandable because those two albums are incredible and have both of ARA's biggest hits: "Third Rate Romace" and "Amazing Grace (Used To Be Her Favorite Song)," but "Toucan Do It Too" combined with "Burning The Ballroom Down" is just as loaded with quality songs and performances.

My all-time favorite ARA song is "Burning The Ballroom Down" because of the music and, to me more importantly, from the stream of emotions that come from the singer's perspective. Russell Smith nails this song all the way from smugness ("I know why you're here by the look in your eye") at the beginning to near-desperation ("It might have to last me forever if I don't see you again") at the end. "Never Been To The Islands" kicks things off with a laid-back style that's easy on the ears, quickly followed by Smith's soulful rendition of "Never Been Hurt" for an excellent contrast.

Again, the musical styles vary across a wide spectrum with the music fitting the lrics and they are all good. The group that was too rock for country, too country for rock and just too eclectic for anywhere else was before its time, but it's given us some great songs.

Pick this up along with another great two-album ARA CD, "Stacked Deck/Too Stuffed To Jump" and their later, self-titled CD.
If you've never heard the Amazing Rhythm Aces, how do you know if you will like them? Do you like surprisingly thoughtful and often clever lyrics? Do you like excellent musicianship? Do you enjoy being exposed to different sounding songs on the same CD? You could do a whole lot worse than this CD and it would be hard to do much better.

5 out of 5 stars Tops.......2002-04-05

I came to the Aces many years after they made their first recordings, and it felt like stumbling on a gold mine or discovering at age 40 that there was such a thing as chocolate. I first heard "Burning the Ballroom Down" on a bootleg tape, driving to Dulles Airport before daylight, and it was like being transported elsewhere. This is my favorite album of the 1000+ albums I own.

5 out of 5 stars rainy night in Georgia..........2007-06-22

so I'm in Atlanta a few years back visiting old friends, it's a rainy night and we're kicking back. I see a video of Sam Moore/Conway Twitty singing a duet of RAINY NIGHT IN GEORGIA that touches my soul. The next day I run out and pick up this CD. It still is one of my favorite cds of all time. Rhythm and blues artists singing with county and western stars, sounds like one of those hit and miss concepts but this cd is all hits. Sadly, it was the last recording Conway Twitty ever made but what a pairing, the soulful Sam Moore and the gravel voiced Conway. Other favorites are WHEN SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH MY BABY, Patti LaBelle and Travis Tritt. THE WEIGHT, Staple Singers and Marty Stuart. AIN'T NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING, Vince Gill and Gladsy Knight. A smashing fun rendition of SOMETHIN ELSE, Little Richard and Tanya Tucker. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Rhythm+Country+Blues = AMERICAN Music!.......2007-06-04

It's all been said here, and quite well, too. But if you are - or know somebody - who was born in 1977 or later, tell them that this disc is a stone-MUST HAVE if one wishes to see how (what used to be known as) Rock and Roll originated. Oh...MY fave? Trisha/Aaron's "I Fall To Pieces." Patsy is smiling from above...

5 out of 5 stars RHYTHM COUNTRY & BLUES.......2006-11-06

THIS CD IS VERY GOOD LISTENING FOR ALL AGES, FEATURING THE MUSIC & VOICES OF MANY KNOWN ARTISTS.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-07-25

A friend loaned me a copy of this CD last week and I've been frantically searching for the name of it ever since so that I could buy my own copy and one for my folks. I'm glad I finally located it.
I don't know how I missed this when it came out but I'm glad someone found it for me. I'll be recommending it to all of my musically inclined friends.
My favorite cut is Rainy Night in Georgia; it is pure pleasure to listen to my old favorite Sam Moore. I'd lost track of Conway after he deserted Rock and Roll for Country but this song reminds me why I loved him when he sang "Make Believe" so many years ago. Travis Tritt and Patti LaBelle were made for each other, as were Al Green and Lyle Lovett. Aaron Neville is always a pleasure and Tanya Tucker and Little Richard are pure fun. Mavis Staples is always great when she sings "The Weight" and this version with Marty Stuart is no exception. These are my favorites but there isn't a bad song on the CD.
This is a "must have" for anyone who loves all forms of music.

5 out of 5 stars How good can "Good" get?.......2007-07-09

I think that when Bill Monroe died in 1996 there was a lot of concern among bluegrass fans about what would happen to the music in the years to come. We shouldn't have worried. Though based on musical traditions older than the hills, Bluegrass music is enjoying salad days unlike anything in the music's storied past. Right now there are probably a dozen bands that sing better and play better than almost anything that existed during Mr. Monroe's lifetime. For the first 70 years of recorded Bluegrass a hot and new talent would come along every five or ten years, it seems like. Since the break-up of the prototypical band - the one with Monroe and Flatt and Scruggs, how many BIG bands came to prominence in the next several decades? The Osborne Brothers.... Jimmy Martin.... J.D. Crowe.... The Country Gentlemen.... The Newgrass Revival....

When Alison Krauss came onto the scene our heads turned. Same with Nickel Creek. Now my head gets turned a few times a year! Who the heck ARE these guys? Carrie Hassler and Hard Rain are all talents previously unknown to me, yet they have recorded an album of blistering bluegrass and heart-wringing country ballads that aren't just good. These tunes shake your bones and get under your skin. Take a listen to the opening track "Restless State of Mind". If your toes aren't tapping and your body swaying call for the undertaker.

Seriously - Carrie Hassler has serious game as a bluegrass/country vocalist. Hard Rain has serious chops - joining the Infamous Stringdusters as a band with so many instrumental options that you just can't WAIT to hear the next hot break from the next hot player. Check out the instrumental "Sensabaugh Tunnel", opening like a wonderful cross between an Irish Fiddle tune and a syncopated Jazz riff, then evolving into a full speed bluegrass breakdown.

I wish Bill could have lived to hear what is being played today. This CD is as good as it gets.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds good Carrie........2007-02-18

This album is an excellent bluegrass/country album. I have been a country music fan for years, and this is one of the best pure country CDs I've heard in a while. Most country music today is just noise (like made by Miranda Lambert, Dierks Bentley, and other losers)...and this album was actually suprisingly good. There were about two songs on this album that I didn't like...but overall it was good. I think Carrie must be a new comer because I just recently heard of her, but she is a very good singer and harmonizes well. Although she can't compare to old time country veterans like Charlie Daniels, Lynn Anderson, and Dolly Parton, she is doing a very good job. I enjoyed this album. Excellent. Good Job Carrie

5 out of 5 stars This album represents this band's lunar launch.......2006-12-25

Playing Time - 33:53 -- Rural Rhythm Records' recent emphasis on "New Traditions" has resulted in their signing Carrie Hassler & Hard Rain. Produced by Jim Van Cleve, rough mixes of the early sessions were sent to the label's president, Sam Passamano. "From the very first song we heard, which was `Seven Miles from Wichita,'" remembers Passamano, "everyone at the label was just blown away by the power, beauty and diversity of Carrie's voice. Her ability to move with such style and grace from hard drivin' bluegrass to traditional country to gospel to an emotional ballad is simply amazing." I heartily agree. The up-and-coming artist from Pikeville, Tn. started out singing at an early age but never found her "true place" until she sang her first bluegrass song and the sound, warmth and feeling that bluegrass gave her. The band's first single, "Seven Miles from Wichita," has memorable melody and lyrics. Carrie fronts the band with her magnetic and somewhat sassy voice telling us tales about life. "Love is our business, and business is good" is one of her hooks.

Carrie has a preponderance of songs about broken hearts or being somewhere enroute running hither and thither. I guess my only recommendation would be to look for songs with new creative themes ... topical material and messages we don't always hear in bluegrass and country music. Then again, maybe they just want to play it safe on their debut. The band covers drivin' material from Jennifer Strickland, Lisa Ray, Rebecca Lynn Howard, and others. They're very good songs. The title cut, from Mark Houser and Jimmy Bilbrey, talks of loosening "these chains in a big ol' town and drivin' to Kentucky in a hard rain" to rediscover country roots. Acoustic country repertoire includes a cover of Webb Pierce and Wayne Walker's "Leavin' On Your Mind" and Morgane Hayes/Rory Lee's "Now That She's Gone." The instrumental "Sensabaugh Tunnel" begins in 6/8 time before being propelled into a fiery breakdown tempo. It's followed by the quartet's a cappella "Least That I Can Do," from the pen of Tammy Griffin. Like the label she's now on, Hassler's contemporary bluegrass pays considerable respect to sound roots tradition with a cover of Carter Stanley's "Our Last Goodbye."

From the first notes on the album, the band's strong drive also features Josh Miller's banjo, Josh Swift's dobro, Kevin McKinnon's mandolin, Keith McKinnon's guitar and Travis Anderson's bass. Guest musicians include Clay Jones, Adam Steffey, Darrin Vincent, Steve Reece, Jim Locke and Katie Kerkhover. Carrie has worked with Dave Peterson and 1946, Mountain Heart, Lonesome River Band, Fritts Family, Rhonda Vincent, Shadow Ridge, Lovell Sisters, Cumberland Gap Connection and Kentucky Wind. Josh has been engaged in bluegrass to funk music, appears on the Lovell Sisters' debut album, and has also recorded with Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder. Born and raised in southwest Virginia, Kevin McKinnon had toured with Jeanette Williams' Band before joining Carrie's in late-2005. His brother, Keith, is not only a great guitarist but a very solid fiddler as well. While exploring other musical styles, Travis stays in touch with bluegrass roots by playing with the Bottom Dollar Band and his family band that now includes two younger sisters on fiddles.

Carrie Hassler says she's blessed with all the love and support she needs to keep moving on. Besides a husband and young son, she also now has the band of her dreams - one that is exciting, innovative, stimulating and astute. Young folks are restless, and they keep on the move. Will this group be a revolving door to bigger bands? Is this band just a one-hit wonder, or are they committed to continued growth and reaching even higher goals with their bluegrass music? They've got the talent and potential to go plumb to the top. In her opening cut (written by bandmates Miller & Swift), Carrie sings of being "off to California one more time with the breeze, tryin' to catch your breath somewhere in between." That sentiment could easily characterize this band's lunar launch, as well as their busy days ahead. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

4 out of 5 stars Energetic & beautiful.......2006-12-21

I'm so glad I accidentally stumbled across this album. Top songs for me -"Restless State" & "Seven Miles". Smooth, memorable lyrics. Musicians are incredible - wonderful sound and Carrie's voice sets a beautiful tone - a bit of Alison Krauss with a kick.

This album is a good reminder of why I love folk and country so much. It gets you back to the roots. Love it! Good luck Carrie and band!

They've endured late-'90s major-label hype and taken fire for their retro self-consciousness during their days on Arista. Despite all that, BR549 has proven remarkably resilient. While two founding members have departed, the reorganized lineup mixes veterans Chuck Mead, Shaw Wilson, and Don Herron with Chris Scruggs (Earl's grandson) and bassist Geoff Firebaugh. Loose and rocking, they rely on no-nonsense originals penned by Mead and Scruggs together and separately. Despite occasional clichés ("Honky Tonkin' Lifestyle"), most numbers are refreshingly free of pretense. Genuine regret pervades the Mead-Raul Malo rocker "That's What I Get." While "Tangled in the Pines" seems a confessional on the group's past, "Movin' the Country" skewers Music Row's soullessness ("tryin' hard not to fall through the cracks and grease up that machine"). A grittier, more honest instrumental sound complements the material. The quirky tempo changes on "No Friend of Mine" succeed and Herron's aggressive steel guitar now screams more than it cries. Few Nashville acts ever succeed in reinventing themselves; it seems BR549 have beaten those odds. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars Country goodness.......2007-05-06

I actually have had this disc since it first came out. To be honest, I was not a fan at first. I put it on my CD rack and did not listen again. I recently listened to it on a trip....and I listened to it over and over again. I'm sorry BR5-49 for my early errors. I am in the process of buying everything they have ever recorded now. Keep it up!

5 out of 5 stars great fun...again..........2007-01-04

New members, so what. My friends Chad and Miles turned me on to these guys in the early 90's. I have been huck-a-billy-rockin with em ever since. There is just something about a group that gets your ears to pick up just because you hear the start to one of their songs that is very refreshing. My wife says that she thinks that all the songs sound the same to her. She just thinks it's "country" and tunes it out. It may not be to everyones taste, but I do like it. my suggestion: Buy it for a change of pace.

5 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Pine-scented Air!.......2006-02-27

I read about this group in a local music rag and figured I'd take a taste. What a treat! BR5-49 is real straight-ahead country/rockabilly without any pretentions! Nice, clean uncluttered production, and top notch songwriting! They prove that even without a Brian Setzer (who I love, by the way), you can put together a really happening rockabilly band. I'd love to see them live.

5 out of 5 stars Super Fun!.......2006-01-06

I love this CD! It always puts me in a great mood! Whether I am going out to ride my horses or going out on a Friday night, this album helps set the energy! I love their sound: a tip of the hat to the masters of old country injected with the sounds of pure rockabilly fun! Definitely a great find for your music collection!

4 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2005-10-27

I only by chance came across this band while doing a search on another band and had a listen to the samples, I was so impressed with what I heard that I just HAD to buy this album, it is fantastic! If you like country music with good vocals and a rockabilly beat, then this album is for you!

5 out of 5 stars Raymond's seminal material cut in 1963 at a radio station in Moncks Corner, S.C........2007-01-02

Playing Time - 47:17 -- With over 50 years in business, Rural Rhythm Records has built a catalog that connects many dots from past to present. Since its 1955 creation, Rural Rhythm has released hundreds of classic performances by many legendary bluegrass and old-time musicians such as J.E. Mainer, Don Reno, Red Smiley, Mac Wiseman, Vassar Clements, Hylo Brown, Bill Harrell, Jim Eanes, and many others. This album is part of that archival catalog. The label owes its Arcadia, California start to Uncle Jim O'Neal whose vision was to release the music of many top bluegrass and old-time musicians in the 1950-70s, seeking success where Starday had failed by producing records of limited appeal by lesser known, albeit talented, musicians.

One artist who owes a great deal to Rural Rhythm is Raymond Fairchild. For Rural Rhythm, this album by Fairchild was originally put out in 1963. It's one of his earliest releases. It was originally called "King of the Smokey Mountain Banjo" album (RR-146) and is given the highest marks. Known as the "31 tune album," some even thought it was too long. An additional album by the same name (RR-254) was subsequently released about six years later by the label. Only three cuts were different. It was unclear why Rural Rhythm had done this, but the speculation was that the earlier release had gone out of print. Those 31 songs are the material on this CD.

Fairchild's pleasant banjo album of mostly old standards included backing by Red White's Dixie Bluegrass Boys (Buck Duncan, Roy Mull, Tommy Rodgers). A reissue entitled "31 Banjo Favorites--Volume II" by Raymond Fairchild was issued on CD in 1999 as RHY-268. Based on a 1999 interview with Barry Willis (author of "America's Music: Bluegrass"), Fairchild shares some recollections about his early days of recording for Rural Rhythm. Dobro-player Clarence Jackson had recorded "Houndog Dobro" (RR-130) and "Bluegrass Special" (RR-132) for the label, and it was Jackson that produced Fairchild's first album for Rural Rhythm. "He come to Maggie Valley," recalls Fairchild, "and told me about that company. I was workin' on Ghost Town, in Maggie Valley. After the season, I got in touch with `em. We cut it then. Roy Mull was on rhythm guitar, Tommy Rodgers was on fiddle, Red White was on rhythm guitar and Bud Duncan was on bass, and me on banjo. It was a little ol' radio station and a reel-to-reel tape recorder. It was Moncks Corner, SC. We worked on it a couple of nights."

When asked why he had two rhythm guitars and no mandolin, Raymond replied, "Well, I don't know the story now, but it seems to me that Mull might have been a little weak. And Red White, he was around, and we figured that two might fill out my pickin' a little better, you know. I very seldom use a mandolin.

Full of boundless energy and determination, his albums demonstrated a multitude of banjo techniques on plain ol' country picking, fiddle tunes, standard bluegrass, old country and gospel. The volume of material being released at the time made it nearly impossible to give it all the attention it normally would have received. Songcarriers and musicologists would be particularly interested in this type of archival material. It's an immeasurably wealthy body of familiar and not so familiar tunes. Some should be revived by today's bands. Don't expect to hear vocals, elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic bluegrass instrumental sound of yesteryear. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

4 out of 5 stars good banjos.......2003-07-31

Although I had not heard of Raymond fairchild, i was impressed with his style, had some good blue grassy tracks and the picking was great

4 out of 5 stars Maybe not perfect.....but what is??.......2003-03-23

To put it simply, Mr. Fairchild is awesome. I have had the privelege of seeing Mr. Fairchild in concert many times and it is always a humbling experience for aspiring banjo players like myself. To be dismissive of Mr. Fairchild's obvious talent, like a previous reviewer called it "gimmicky", is ridiculous. It is obvious that the reviewer is unable to simulate the style of this guy. I agree that the genius of Scruggs and Crowe is well known and they are considered "tasteful", but the "Scruggs" style is also a very simple one to emulate. I find it much easier to tabulate a "Break" by Crowe or Scruggs and to pick it out than to try and play a tune like Mr. Fairchild plays it. You just can't do it without having the talent to back it up. While a certain amount of showmanship is included in Mr. Fairchild's recordings and live-shows, it is the banjo playing that keeps me coming back for more. This CD is not perfect however, the sound leaves a little to be desired in comparison to todays releases, bear in mind this CD was recorded in the 1960's and the mix is weak at times. Also the back-up musicians are not of the caliber that Mr. Fairchild tours with now, but over-all,it provides a raw and true picture of an awesome talent displayed by Mr. Fairchild. More recent CD's by Fairchild such as "Lil Zane" and others, are more polished, so if you are obsessed with a polished product, check some of those out, but if you just like hearing a master at work, buy this CD and look past the imperfections and you will "see" what I "hear". It's not a "gimmicky" sound at all, but an awesome display of a true master that is in complete control of his instrument. If you don't believe me, just try and copy one of his tunes!! Better yet, go catch one of his live performances, where he really shines, and you will have no doubt of his standing of one of the true "elite" banjo players of our day.

5 out of 5 stars musical delight.......2003-03-18

I love bluegrass and love listening to the humming banjo. I had never heard of raymond fairchild, but soon fell in love with his amazing fingers. after listening to this back to back twice, I ended up buying several more CD's of his music.

3 out of 5 stars For banjo history buffs..........2003-01-20

Raymon Fairchild belongs to an exclusive group of super pickers that Bela Fleck has credited with providing inspiration for his own work. Fairchild's picking is raw and fast, and his sound is straight from the mountains. Listening to Fairchild and his unique 3-fingered style is a little like watching a Ken Burns documentary- like finding a missing piece of a puzzle- you'll begin to see the whole picture in the history of the 5 string banjo.
These recordings vary in quality from poor to fair, but each seems faithful to the original.
