When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. In order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. From the beginning the Ring has spawned numerous written commentaries on the relationships of the motif structure, but by using examples from the Decca Ring recording, Deryck Cooke's thoughtful spoken commentary is by far the most accessible guide for either the fledgling Ring enthusiast or the seasoned veteran. --Christian C. Rix

Ring introduction critique.......2006-11-04
This is very worthwhile, at the same time it requires time, patience and attention, but it does provide some keys to better enjoyment of a sensational piece of music.
FASCINATING STUDY FOR NOVICES AND AFFICIONADOS ALIKE.......2006-08-16
This may look an intimidating, daunting and dull prospect - a 2+ hour lecture on the motifs in the Ring. Don't be put off. Whether you're a relative novice to the Ring and want to find out what it's all about, more experienced with a desire to understand the composer's methods better or an afficionado who thinks he knows it all inside out, there is great pleasure as well as elucidation to be had from this set. Originally made to accompany the Decca Solti Ring, it contains a multitude of musical illustrations taken from those recordings as well as some specially recorded by Solti just for this Introduction.
It wasn't the first time this has been tried. The famous HMV sets from the late 20's also included recorded examples of over 100 motifs. (These, by the way, are available as part of the Pearl reissue of those wonderful HMV recordings). What that set lacked was the wonderful insights as well as the approachability of the talk by Deryck Cooke. Cooke was a great and much missed musicologist - a Mahler expert responsible for the performing edition of the Tenth Symphony still most played today, a fascinating explorer into the nature of music's basic building-blocks in his excellent book, The Language of Music, and an inspiring and elucidating critic of Wagner's work as shown by the fascinating book he left unfinished at his death, I Saw the World End.
On these CDs he does much more than list the leitmotifs and identify them as calling-cards. He shows the amazingly integrated and organic growth of the musical material that Wagner uses throughout his vast work. He demonstrates how motifs can change their sense and meaning as they evolve through the drama. And he shows how the complex combinations of motifs can radically advance both the musical and the dramatic narrative of the piece. There are even places where he corrects the misinterpretation of some of the motifs that had become ingrained from early commentators' false labels.
This set should engage and enlighten anyone with an interest in Wagner's huge and inexhaustible tetralogy. Do give it a try - no matter how far down the road to Wagnerianism you are.
Welcome back to a classic analysis.......2006-05-28
Deryck Cooke's lecture series upon THE RING is almost as much a classic by now as the Solti RING cycle, with which it was originally issued on LP, and from which it derives its musical examples. The difference is that whereas the Solti RING has been continuously in print ever since it was completed, and was among the first opera sets to benefit from the CD revolution, the Cooke analysis was for long almost totally unobtainable. Now we have it back. It should be welcomed: it is a classic. Cooke's mellow, deep voice with the hint of a Celtic burr - which made him ideal on BBC radio - patiently explains Wagner's melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic metamorphoses to such good effect that if you own this recording, you really require no other RING analysis. (A pity about the abrupt beginnings and endings of too many vocal and orchestral illustrations, though.) Musicology lost a fine, sensitive thinker with Cooke's premature death in 1976.
If all you want is dilettantish baby food, there are plenty of dumbed-down Wagner commentaries on the market, stretching from Anna Russell's famous monologue (which doesn't pretend to be anything other than a parody aimed at morons) to the latest standard-issue "Wagner-was-a-Nazi-boo-hiss" feuilleton (which, unfortunately, does). Without reasonable score-reading skill you will find Cooke useless, however diligently you have ploughed through Marx, Jung, Freud, or other gurus purportedly relevant to THE RING. Cooke expects you to use your brains and your musical sense. Quelle horreur. At today's BBC his "elitism" would render him unemployable.
Essential for Understanding Wagner's Ring Cycle.......2006-05-15
I originally bought this set on vinyl in the early 70s when I discovered the Ring in college. I studied the records and booklet assiduously, and after about three run-throughs I finally started getting it. Wow! Thirty-five years later, I still remember Mr. Cooke's analyses of various motive families, and I don't know how I could have mastered and loved the Ring without him. I now own this set on CD and listen again on the rare occasion of attending a Ring performance. My wife calls me a "Ring nut," but of course I'm nuts about many other things as well.
Bottom line, buy this set and study it if the Ring has captivated you as it has countless others. The presentation is dry, but sticking with it brings measureless and longlasting rewards.
Very Functional.......2006-03-19
This CD set is excellent for what it sets out to do: present the leitmotives of the Ring according to their relationship to one another and their role in developing both characters and plotlines. Deryck Cooke's lectures on each motive are very insightful, very helpful at cueing the listener into the semantic aspect of Wagner's orchestral writing. The one drawback is that the musical examples are a bit jarring. Without fade-ins or -outs, the engineering is quite barbaric. And though the orchestra was, I believe, conducted by Solti, and is beautifully done, the vocal performances can be quite unpleasant. Point being: this is not background music, but in accomplishing what it sets out to do, it is very successful, and I don't know of anything else like it.

Two More Years of Dirt.......2005-07-12
This is the follow up compilation to the 20 Years of Dirt album. It features the bands "country" hits that were released in 1987 and 1988, two older hits that were left off the first compilation and two non-hits. It fills in some of the holes, but not all of them, by any means.
Good Stuff.......2005-02-27
I've always enjoyed the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. They play some great music with nice harmonies and mandolins...yes, mandolins. I'm a sucker for that instrument. This particular greatest hits offering includes some of their biggest hits from the 80's. Just about everybody knows "Fishin' In The Dark," which, in my opinion, is one of the best country songs every placed on vinyl, or a cassette, or a disc. "I've Been Lookin'" and "Baby's Got A Hold On Me" are also here. Those three songs alone are worth the price of this disc.
Other highlights include "Face On The Cutting Room Floor," "Oh What A Love," and "Down That Road Tonight."
In summary, if you're interested in groups like Shenandoah, Restless Heart, and the Eagles, you'll probably enjoy these guys. They are more country than Restless Heart and the Eagles, but they don't have that forced "twang" that lingers on some of Shenandoah's songs.
A definite buy.
Humble Name, Real Roots Rock Legends.......2003-06-06
The follow-up to the original "best of" NGDB collection, More Great Dirt, consists of more of the 80's country hits during their long career. The NGDB was once a folk and country-rock band, but the majority of the songs on More Great Dirt come from their mainstream country days, which were the most overlooked of their albums. They really had no one big radio hit during this time (except for "Fishin' In the Dark), which hurts this record, as does the fact that it is very overshadowed by the "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" albums that were huge hits. The highlights of the album include the summertime hit "Fishin' in the Dark," Bruce Springsteen's "Cadillac Ranch," and the rocking "Down That Road Tonight." It is too bad that there are only ten tracks here. In my opinion, this isn't up to par with the classic NGDB, but it is still good, quality country and folk. A good purchase if you want an overview of their latter days.
Another great NGDB "best of" collection.......2003-01-08
More Great Dirt is the follow-up to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's previous "best of" collection, Twenty Years Of Dirt. This record, like Twenty Years Of Dirt, consists mainly of hit songs from the '80s, the period when NGDB made a transition from being a progressive country-rock band to a mainstream country act. Like Twenty Years Of Dirt, More Great Dirt is a solid collection of the Dirt Band's hit songs. Indeed, in my opinion, this record tops Twenty Years Of Dirt despite its lack of a "classic" NGDB hit song(for instance, "Mr. Bojangles" and "Long Hard Road"). Even if hardly anybody listens to these songs a long time from now, I think the songs the Dirt Band chose to put on More Great Dirt are among their best. This record may have gotten overlooked by some listeners because NGDB released it in '89, the same year they came out with their platinum-selling Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Volume 2. After listening to More Great Dirt, however, I don't think you should pass it up. By itself, it's a great record.
Like other Dirt Band records I have, this one has a lot of highlights. It starts out with NGDB's version of "Cadillac Ranch", the classic Bruce Springsteen song, with lead vocals by Jeff Hanna and Jimmy Ibbotson. There are also Ibbotson's joyful ballad "Oh What A Love"; the upbeat summer song "Fishin' In The Dark", which topped the country charts in '87; Hanna and Ibbotson's toe-tapping song "I've Been Lookin'"; "Workin' Man(Nowhere To Go)", charter NGDB member Jimmie Fadden's song about the tribulations of the displaced farmer; and the rocking songs "Baby's Got A Hold On Me" and "Down That Road Tonight". Finally, the Dirt Band, as they did on Twenty Years Of Dirt, included their best songs from the early '80s. Besides "Cadillac Ranch", NGDB's early '80s hits which are on here include "Home Again In My Heart", "I Love Only You", and "Face On The Cutting Room Floor". There are no Bob Carpenter lead vocals here(unlike "Stand A Little Rain" on Twenty Years Of Dirt), but Carpenter's solid piano and accordion work are obvious on most of the songs.
On More Great Dirt, NGDB not only matched Twenty Years Of Dirt, but they did even better. My only criticism of this record--and my gripe is a minor one--is that, like a previous reviewer, I don't think it's long enough. Ten songs don't completely capture NGDB's musical ability, and I think some of my fellow Dirt Band fans will complain that even after a couple of "best of" collections, there are still some NGDB hit songs that haven't made it onto a "best of" album. Still, I don't see how anybody wouldn't like this record. There are no obvious attempts by the Dirt Band to appeal to their "pop" fans(which is what I think "Fire In The Sky" was on Twenty Years Of Dirt). Instead, what you'll get when you listen to More Great Dirt is a great collection of hit country songs by a group who makes high-quality music even if their songs don't always end up on the charts. Don't miss this one--I think you'll be impressed.
Terrific Eighties Dirt Band Collection (But Skimpy).......2000-04-03
For Most of the Eighties (and the Nineties, too, for that matter), the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band decided they were not a jug band/roots rock/bluegrass/country-rock band. Instead, they were a country band. And by and large, country music was all the better for it. Granted, the NGDB's albums beginning with American Dream in 1979 would be of mixed quality (even though I dutifully bought them all).
So what you get here on Vol. II are the highlights of those albums. Gems like Bruce Springsteen's "Cadillac Ranch," the joyous "Fishin' in the Dark," the rousing "Baby's Got a Hold on Me" and the melancholy "Face on the Cutting Room Floor." Other highlights are original songs like Jimmy Ibbotson and Jeff Hanna's "I've Been Lookin'," Ibbotson's "Oh What a Love" and Jimmie Fadden's "Workin' Man (Nowhere to Go)." The songs feature impeccable playing, tight harmonies and just enough mandolin, steel guitar and banjo to lend an authenticity lacking in much of Nashville's cookie-cutter approach to country music.
If there's any criticism of this disc, it's that it's too short. It's like eating a bag of chips. Each one is so good, you're disappointed when you get to the end. In the CD Age there's no excuse for a 10-track, 34-minute CD, especially when you're talking about a disc that purports to be "The Best of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band." RECOMMENDED

Great Music and Arrangements.......2006-09-24
I listen to alot of different styles and types of music. I have a pretty large music library. This collection is one of my top 3 favorites. The Nelson Riddles don't come along very often. Due to their time frame most all of these tracks are only a little over two minutes in length. Every time I listen Nelson leaves me begging for more of each track.Even if you don't think that you will like this collection, take my word for it. YOU WILL......Lightfoot
Outstanding 2-fer of jazzy arrangements of TV themes.......2005-06-29
Though only four of these are Nelson originals ("Route 66 Theme" "The Untouchables" "Theme From Sam Benedict" and "New Naked City Theme"), the maestro puts his stamp on every track through his inventive, signature arrangements. Highlights include swinging charts for "The Alvin Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show," Latin beats for "My Three Sons" and "The Lucy Show," the Bert Kaempfert styled "The Defenders Theme," and a fine light-jazz take on "Supercar." Two great albums, brought together on one extraordinary CD!
Classic big band arrangements.......2004-06-17
Embodies all the excitement of the 60's TV shows. Nelson Riddle and his band of top musicians can still can stand along side todays TV and movie music creators with colour and richness of sound that is often assisted by digital enhancement today.
Top marks for releasing both LP albums on a single CD, my original 33rpm records can now be put into retirement.
TUNE IN to GREAT TUNES!.......2002-04-17
Three cheers for EMI for finally putting these two albums out on CD for all to enjoy. Nelson Riddle's TV Theme versions were really hot when they were released on vinyl. Since then, an ocassional song has been released here and there, but here are both albums complete in pristine sound as well. This CD is worth its weight in gold for the rip-roarin' version Nelson and the gang lays down of The DICK VAN DYKE Theme, if for no other reason. There are of course about 20 other reasons including the themes from THE ALVIN SHOW, the LUCY Show, and THE BALLAD OF JED CLAMPETT. TV fans of all ages will delight in and enjoy this long overdue collection of some of TV's greatest theme songs, done by one of Hollywood's most fantastic arrangers.
Hope to see more of Nelson's albums represented in this fashion by the good people at EMI. Very nice packaging including all original liner notes as well. Great CD!

Definately now as good as the first edition!.......2001-06-20
I was truly disappointed in this purchase. Not only is the quality bad, but I didn't really care for some of the selections. The song did not feel like they flowed together at all. But I do need to say, that MobHits 1 was great and I highly recommend that purchase!
Bad try.......2001-05-03
If you are expecting anything close to the first album , forget it. Sound is poor, selection so so . I would give it a value of $5.00. Very sorry I wasted the money.

I love my Mob Hits I, and thought that this would be just as wonderful. It is good, but not great. If you don't have MHI I suggest it, but II just doesn't pop.

Playwright Tony Kushner adapted his sprawling meditation on the AIDS epidemic of the 80's into an equally epic, Mike Nichols-directed HBO miniseries. But while Thomas Newman's score spans that dramatic landscape with rich stylistic diversity, the young champion of the daunting Newman family musical tradition (his father was Fox legend Alfred; his brother fellow film scorer David; his cousin songwriter/composer Randy) never lets musical bombast get in the way of compelling emotional introspection. Anchored by a delicate wind and string-driven main theme that's as mature as it is bittersweet, Newman proceeds to explore some of the same adventurous, rhythmically restless soundscapes that characterized his work on Erin Brockovich and American Beauty. But that typically moody experimentalism is leavened elsewhere by moments of neo-baroque choral exultation, smokey 30's jazz (courtesy of George Lewis and his Ragtime Band and Duke Ellington) and even flashes of gospel and orchestral post-modernism, all of it served up with a masterful sense of irony-free restraint that's become one of the composer's most refreshing hallmarks. It's easily one of Newman's -- and 2003's -- most accomplished and satisfying film scores. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Some of his best work.......2007-06-12
Most of us know Thomas Newman for his work on his more famous films like American Beauty, Shawshank Redemption, Scent of a Woman and Meet Joe Black, but this soundtrack to the HBO film is right up there with his best pieces of work. The whole album goes through various feelings, shades and emotions, the best tracks for me being Mauve Antarctica and Tropopause. If you're a Thomas Newman fan then you need this in your collection.
Angels in America - Always Great!.......2007-01-03
Love the film, the play and the soundtrack. If you find the topics of Angels in America interesting, thought-provoking and warm to your heart, you will LOVE this. As a man battling HIV, I find it outstanding. Thanks Amazon, for offering all the Angels in America products.
GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-01
There are not enough stars on the selection for me to say how good this CD is! It is so beautiful and like classical music. I listen to it all the time!
The Celestial Xpression of Thomas Newman.......2005-08-31
...well, to only write a review is not enough to describe the impressive sound in this record. it is necessary to listen to it. Thomas do not scrimp in efforts to assemble this wonderful musical work. in fact, each one of the melodys, agreed, and instruments (mainly those of wind and strings) even are perfectly connected and performed in litle some more of 70 minutes of music. Transitions from the quietness of a melody to the loudest human chorus, may be hear is this soundtrack (tipically from the original Serie, that I have too in DVD). But everything is not perfect. Must be had included the Henry Mancini song: "Moon River" contained in one of the most sentimental scenes in the film/serie (that i think at least). In a plus, if you are an lover of this kind of productions, it does not have to lack in its collection the "Angels in America Soundtrack". Buy and enjoy it..!
Amazing work.......2004-11-28
After working in film scoring for the past decade, Thomas Newman has finally achieved his masterwork with the soundtrack to "Angels in America." It is a culmination of the different techniques and themes he has worked on in the past, along with a completely new orchestral sound that perfectly underlies the depth and scope of the film. It is a very rare score in that it conveys all the happiness, pain, pessimism and hope that Kushner's work is all about, simply through the nuanced way Newman has written and arranged it. It is an incredibly entertaining score that stands well on its own. A must for any fans of Newman or the film.

Customer Reviews:
Good job.......2005-08-26
I remember when I was little, I had this cd, but i lost it. I bought a similiar type of one through TIme Life and decided to try the Classical Thunder one. I have like it so far.
Masterful!.......2005-06-15
This two CD set is magnificent. I got the set in the early 1990's when it was advertised on television, along with other releases in Time Life's set. I was struck by the interpretations of the conductors. Whenever I hear these pieces now, I judge them against this recording. Amazing selection as well. There are staples of orchestra repetoire, like Beethoven symphonies, but also gems that are not heard very often, like the Rimsky-Korsakov "Procession of the Nobles." A very impressive recording.
Great CD of Classical music's power pieces!.......2005-06-07
I got this CD when I was around 16 because I loved a lot of the music on this double CD set. As a student pursuing a Music Education major, it has been a great asset for my musically, and just great for listening to. I will drive on short trips and take this with me and blast it louder than the guy in the next car blasting rap music. I also take it skiing as it sets a great tempo down the mountain. This is a great CD for anyone that loves music.

Album Description
The American Yiddish musical theater, a vibrant expression of the immigrant experience, became famous during its heyday in the 1920s-1940s. Combining the musical flavors of Viennese operetta, Tin Pan Alley, and eastern European nostalgia, these songs and duets are quintessential American popular musicwith a Yiddish voice. Volume 1 spotlights the hit songs of Abe Ellstein, one of the genre's premier songwriters. New, historically accurate orchestrations re-create the unforgettable glory days of Yiddish radio and film, the uproarious vaudeville houses, and the thrill of a night at the theater on old New York's fabled "Second Avenue."
Customer Reviews:
Great collection, nice orchestrations.......2005-01-19
Great collection of yiddish musical theatre favorites. Unfortunately the singers were told to sing the songs in a supposedly "authentic" galician accent which in certain instances is completely incomprehensible to any yiddish speaker. The singers are quite good and the orchestrations are lush and well done.
A Great New Addition to the Milken Archive!.......2004-03-10
This CD is perfect for fans of Yiddish folk music and newcomers to the genre alike. It is a great introduction to some of the treasures of the Yiddish stage. Especially worth noting are the four tracks sung by Elizabeth Shammash, whose rich Mezzo-Soprano voice brings a great sensitivity and tone to her pieces.

Customer Reviews:
Great CD for my yoga classes!.......2007-07-10
With over 40 songs and sound meditation moments just on the first CD of Namaste! this set gave me lots of tools and ideas to work with for teaching my yoga classes.
For example, I found the song "Being Present" to be a good lead in for meditation practice with children and even with adults in my classes.
I have played "Being Present" as a listening meditation to center my students at the beginning of class. It makes a great introduction to seated meditation focusing on the breath. I have also played "Being Present" at the end of yoga class as encouragement for my students to continue noticing times during the day when they are "being present" while engaged in day to day activities. Listening to "Being Present" has helped my students find easy and fun ways to focus on meditation practices. It's been an instant "hit".
Fun for all ages.......2007-04-25
This Cd is so much fun! It is joyful and full of heart and soul.
I highly reccomend it for anyone!
A Great Buy for Kids and Adults Alike.......2006-07-21
I bought "Namaste!" upon a recommendation by a friend, and boy have the CDs exceeded my expectations! We have listened to the CDs in the car during trips (we have three boys) and listen to them at home as well.
The tunes are catchy, the boys pick them up and hum them when they are doing their chores (so maybe I used this music to "focus" the boys during their chores). Many of the "ditties" are good for introducing new poses or transitioning into something new (even in every day activities). For a novice yoga family, this music collection is fun, positive, and inspiring.
Fun, great messages, good for kids' creativity.......2006-02-20
My two kids (ages 4 & 7) are listening to this and they are really into it.
They end up making up lots of their own creative yoga poses,
dances and games from what they hear,
which I think is a positive aspect of an audio-based piece.
Good stuff , lots of heart .......2006-01-26
Lots of heart and good stuff ... which I appreciate as a parent and someone into yoga myself. I love the fact that these songs are simple enough for young children to sing. As an adult, I find the simpleness and singability of the songs are more like melodic chants or mantras in English. Actually listening to them, using them for yoga poses, and singing them really brings them to life.
I am glad to have found out about this CD and have recommended this to other yoga-families who are looking for inspirations.

Incredible,Ska+Originality, best of the Aquabats!.......2004-11-27
Well I picked this cd up last after all of the other three aquabats albums, and I was very surprised. The sound made me want to get up and dance. This cd is very short and more of a ska dance feel, it's classic. Many people disagree when I say this cd is there best, there are only ten songs but Playdough and CD Repo Man are so good plus the fact that Idiot Box and Martian Girl are originally from this cd makes them even more fun to listen to, this cd is essential for Aquabats fans and a ska fan.
Playdough- So catchy! Better than Super Rad. 10/10
Martian Girl- Long, 2nd best song about a Martian. 7/10
Ska Robot Army- A great song! Makes me want to party. 7/10
Idiot Box- Excellent. Slower than the remake but still great.8/10
Pinch & Roll- Wow! Hilarious and a good ska raggae feel. 9/10
Tarantula- A little repetitive but still funny and decent. 7/10
Marshmellow Man- Another great song, sound like the Toasters.8/10
Aquabat March- The only track I occasionaly skip, still ok. 5/10
CD Repo Man- Best on the cd, one of the best Aquabats songs.10/10
It's Crazy,Man! Another great song on the cd, fast and fun. 9/10
As you will see all of these songs on the cd are very high rated with one exception. You probably think I'm just rating these songs high because I just like the Aquabats, well if you don't beleive me then check my other review for the Fury Of the Aquabats or just buy the cd, trust me it's there best.
Evildoers beware...........2004-09-14
Everyone's favorite ska superheroes burst onto the scene with this debut album and it's obvious from the start that they are one of a kind. The album offers up 10 ridiculously catchy ska anthems about, well, basically nothing, but who cares? With songs as infectiously silly as "Pinch And Roll," who needs deep meaning? This is a great CD, but it pales in comparison to their second work, "Fury Of The Aquabats," which contains revised versions of a few of the best songs here. But for fans of the Aquabats, this is a classic CD.
Fantastic Debut Effort!.......2003-10-02
As always, The Aquabats have a style unlike any others. They have an excellent sense of humor and don't take themselves too seriously. Their songs themselves are also very catchy.
BlossomBat, Aquacadet extraordinaire.......2002-04-22
I love this CD... it is really the best ska cd to have been released in a really long time... NOt only does the music rock, but the bats themselves are super rad.. I met most of them at a concert, along with aaron brackett of reel big fish, but anyways umm for the people who like the bats I suggest you visit their cool website... and become an Aquacadet!!!! its very cool.... oh and this cd has all the classics like martain girl, playdough (which is the best song on the album) Cd Repo Man, Tarantula, just a lot of great songs.... The Bats also do the themesong for a new show on cartoon network, but I forgot the name... All in all I highly recomend this cd and every other cd buy this group... They are the greatest Band EVER!!!!...
BE OPEN MINDED AND TRY THIS CD!.......1999-11-24
This CD is GREAT. A friend of mine, Stevie, suggested this CD, because she told me it was her favorite band. I never even heard of the band before that. NOW It's my new favorite band. It consists of a unique type of music. I can only describe it as, maybe ska, punk, and some comedy. But, really it's neither, because it's better! TRY IT! I GUARANTEE YOU, YOU WILL LOVE IT!

Album Description
The original Swing arrangements in a Big Band STEREO Spectacular! Here's the sequel to our first Glen Gray CD (Eric #11506) with 22 more authentic arrangements. Digitally remixed in brilliant true stereo sound from the original sessions recorded by the top musicians of the big band era at Capitol's studios between 1957 and 1964. The sound is so good you'll think you're actually in front of the bandstand back in the Thirties! Almost 70 minutes of great music.

More Great Sounds.......2003-11-03
I think this cd and it's companion first volume are a must for any big band fan. When these remakes were first released I recall that many reviewers were not to pleased with the results. When listening to big band music one usually has to make a trade-off between swinging spontaneity and qood sound quality, and this cd is no exception. Casa Loma was a pretty swinging band in the mid-thirties, but seemed to have mellowed out over the years. As a result these recordings sound a little dry and perhaps over-rehearsed. The band clearly lacked a propulsive rhythm section, when compared with the Harry James Orchestra in the fifites and the Basie band at any time. Nonetheless, it is great to hear the original charts (with very few and very minor changes) recorded with relatively modern equipment, and notwithstanding the engineer's apparent desire to favor the brass over reeds and bass. Pop this cd into your sound system and crank up the volume and you'll get a good idea of how the great bands sounded, and how much we have missed.
