4 out of 5 stars Dreams of Glory is a treat.......2007-04-12

I didn't even know of this band until i
heard them on XM Radio a few months ago,
I don't know why they're not bigger than
they are, it's not for lack of talent.
They remind me of the early version of
the Pretenders, with a dash of Lone Justice
thrown in. Great mix of rockers and ballads.

5 out of 5 stars I have been in Johnny Rock's Cantina........2007-03-21

Johny Rock's Cantina is an amazing song. But is a place too, and the music you can listen to in that place is always pure and simple rock and roll. Find the place starting with this record. You won't be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Stone Coyotes know how to rock!.......2007-02-02

I think this is an excellent cd, full of high energy rock and roll, great melodies, and great lyrics. This band is absolutely fantastic. Barbara Keith has a great voice, can really rock out on the electric guitar, and writes really good songs. The bassist and drummer provide a great rhythm, a strong driving force that will make you want to get up and dance, stomp your feet or at least get your feet tapping. Like most good music, it consists not only of really good rock music, but some stuff that leans towards folk and country. It is a bit difficult to accurately describe, but I would definitely recommend this cd to any rock fan. It is an incredibly awesome production.

5 out of 5 stars Rock AND Roll!.......2006-10-29

Barbara Keith had an eponymous vinyl LP in 1972 that I tracked down and purchased on CD (well worth the effort) learning in that search about her subsequent band, 'The Stone Coyotes'. All (so far) seven Coyotes' albums are terrific, with, in my opinion, "fire it up" and "Situation Out of Control" being the stand-outs. "Barbara Keith" was folk with considered lyrics. Barbara Keith brings every bit of that intelligent poetic sensibility to hard-core rock and roll with 'The Stone Coyotes'.

5 out of 5 stars The Stone Coyotes Continue to Amaze.......2005-04-20

I do not look forward to new albums put out by artist that I admire. Throughout my life I have been disappointed. Surprise! Surprise ! The Stone Coyotes dashed that theory and simply amazed me with their gut wrenching rock and roll and outstanding lyrics. From "All Dressed Up" to "Wakeup" the songs are all great. "Rectified" with its tale of murder sent chills down my back with its driving beat and tale of revenge. "Stars in Her Eyes" is one of the best songs of childhood dreams I've ever heard. Barbara Keith's phrasing is outstanding. The Ghost of Vicksburg settles the middle section of tracks with a great sentimental ballad of the Civil War. Next crank up the volume on The Girls of America. Major Powers chords about Girls who wantto rock. My daughter is now an avid Coyote Fan. This album is great.

5 out of 5 stars For Cowboys at Heart.......2005-10-30

If growing up with all of the old singing cowboys of the silver screen and then spending 20 years cowboy'n out in Wyoming makes me any kind of a judge, I'd have to say these singers catch the true spirit of the west. If you're my age, 65, and 'Running out of Roundups', doesn't bring a lump to your throat, you better go back to Rock and Roll.

The Stone Coyotes might be a rock band, but that doesn't mean they slip neatly into a stereotype. Barbara Keith's songs are influenced by folk music ("Where the Old Oak Grows," "If You See the One") and gospel ("Bone Tired") as much by Led Zeppelin or any classic-rock sound. She's a powerful singer, too, and as a guitarist she can flurry notes with the best of them, although she generally chooses not to, making her solos short and very incisive. For a three-piece, there's a remarkably full sound, with much kudos to the Tibbles father and son rhythm section, solid as a rock but subtle so you sense them without being overwhelmed. This is a band that's confident of its own identity--their cover of Donovan's "Season of the Witch" makes it sound like an original, and they're not afraid to embrace some neopunk on the live closer, "Saw You at the Hop." These coyotes howl. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars Folk lyrics meet power rock 'n roll trio........2006-10-29

"Situation Out of Control", "Lucky Day", "When Parliament Convenes", the haunting (for a sometime sailor) "The Black Atlantic", the kicking "I Want to Rock" the cover of "Season of the Witch", "Saw You at the Hop", what's not to like? How many albums are you going to find where EVERY song is outstanding? Barbara Keith had an eponymous vinyl LP in 1972 that I tracked down and purchased on CD (well worth the effort) learning in that search about her subsequent band, 'The Stone Coyotes'. All (so far) seven Coyotes' albums are terrific, with, in my opinion, "fire it up" and "Situation Out of Control" being the stand-outs. "Barbara Keith" was folk with considered lyrics. Barbara Keith brings every bit of that intelligent poetic sensibility to hard-core rock and roll with 'The Stone Coyotes'. Just the first song alone, "Situation Out of Control", is worth the effort to acquire.

5 out of 5 stars I jest you not folks, this could be your lucky day........2000-12-01

This is one of the songs you hear when being transferred to an order specialist! Let me tell you folks, I called, and was put on hold, and after hearing this song, I was so touched... it was like an angel came and sat on my shoulder. Soon after that experience, I finally got to talk to a LIVE person, and she must have picked up on my overwhelmed state of X-tacy, that she was able to help me with all my problems, and then proceeded to give me a gift certificate for my future purchases! Talk about luck! I credit this song for my good fortune! You know, sometimes I call in and just ask to be put on hold...

A few more wise words for you:

Whatever you do, don't be downhearted, blah - blah - blah, somethings might be coming round the corner, this might be your lucky day,

this might be your lucky day,

your lucky day,

lucky day-ay-ay.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Album.......2000-11-14

For those of you who are fans of the Stone Coyotes, I would recommend tracking down an album by Tom Faulkner called, Lost in the Land of Texico. I think you'll enjoy it for the same reasons you like the Coyotes.

5 out of 5 stars if you want to understand groove..........2000-08-26

to have any expectation about this album is to have it blown away by the opening power of the title track. moving from storytelling in "where the old oak grows" to the imagery of "my horse has wings" and the crunch of "bone tired" there are only moments to catch your breath when needed. this isn't to say that "situation out of control" moves forward at a breakneck pace, out of control in itself - to say that would be an insult to an album taking inspiration from all sorts of places musical from straight-ahead american rock to country to punk to rap - all strung together throughout the album, and, in this reviewer's opinion coming together in the spectacular "when parliament convenes" - thus sounding truly, for the first time in years, like no other band sounds...

5 out of 5 stars The Stone Coyotes have done it again!.......2000-08-17

This album is so good that it gives me chills. I especially like "Where the Old Oak Grows" and "Highland Boy".

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the bad review, don't ignore this album.......2004-01-10

I think that The Stone Coyotes are a band you either get, or don't. Part of that might have to do with whether or not one is willing to "rock" - i know that sounds cliche in a jaded time but there was something compelling in early rock and roll that made it stick around and The Stone Coyotes one of the only bands today that has that "put the world on edge and both make you move and move you" feel to their music.

Pay no mind to the one negative review here....go to the band's website, listen to some sound samples, and find out what a whole lot of people know - that this is an artist that has gained a huge underground following for a reason.

Barbara Keith's songs are songwriting as it ought to be - not the wimpy, woe is me, autobiographical drivel that comes out of everybody's mouth these days (as if we want to hear another tale of sitting at a bar with your face in a beer) but songs with stories, like Johnny Cash once wrote before he started doing nothing but cover tunes (I'm sorry, rest his soul). These are songs that get at the heart of the world. You will not be disappointed.

Album Description

Family power rock trio. As one critic put it, " Imagine AC/DC fronted by a woman who sings like Patsy Cline and writes like Bob Dylan." Internet pioneers blazing their own trail, they have been embraced by everyone from college radio to author Elmore Leonard, who included their lyrics in his sequel to "Get Shorty", the novel "Be Cool". They rock and they mean it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What's your problem?.......2006-06-20

I'm having a little trouble understanding the previous reviewer--What's with the insane anger? And why do you keep reviewing them if you obviously don't understand or like the music? Is there something personal? Does it make you mad that everybody seems to like/love this amazingly cool band? We love them here in new Orleans, and they haven't even toured here yet...but we're keeping our fingers crossed. Can't wait to get the new cd that we've heard some of on xm.

1 out of 5 stars Very overrated here at Amazon.......2006-06-10

This is the second Stone Coyotes album I've heard, and all I can say is that it's boring, predictable, and very overrated (apparently, judging from the Amazon reviews). I would only think this was decent if I came across this band at a bar and had had a few beers. Imagine Bonnie Raitt fronting ZZ Top and you're halfway there, except that they're barely half as good as that would be. Barbara Keith may have a decent voice, but she sings here with little true energy and no variation -- if you like one of these songs, you're bound to like them all, because they pretty much sound alike. The best song is their cover of "Jolene," because it's a great song and it's not theirs.

If you stopped paying attention to rock in about 1980, and classic rock radio is as cutting edge as you care to be, I can see where you're coming from liking these guys. If punk and other risk-takers in rock since then have been too scary for you, then this band may be for you. If you want to hear some truly great women in rock, though, listen to P.J. Harvey, Sleater-Kinney, or Neko Case, to name but a few.

5 out of 5 stars Be Cool and Listen.......2005-03-25

The freshest rock in years comes from a middleage rocker named Barbara Keith. I love this album. My 10 year old daughter and I are both inspired to play the guitar and rock. Nothing false here. Long live the Stone Coyotes. I'm seeing them next week and I am stoked.

5 out of 5 stars why isn't First Lady of Rock the most known song on earth?.......2004-01-14

First Lady of Rock.

This song is just the coolest.

The greatest inspiration for all the aspiring grrl guitarists and singers like me

5 out of 5 stars My New Favorite CD.......2002-05-23

One review writer for a major publication described the Stone Coyotes as "AC/DC meets Patsy Cline." That's about as close as one can get, yet this family trio certainly has a sound both unique and awesome. I was virtually dumbstruck the first time I heard this disk, and it was my first exposure to this band. Their sound is powerful and crunchy, infectious and erotic. Every song on this disk is hot, hot, hot. Barbara's voice is both haunting and searing, and Doug and John form the tastiest rhythm section of any rock band today, bar none. Their cover of Dolly's "Joline" is particularly noteworthy. If you like rock, you absolutely must own this one.

It was once a given that oldsters couldn't rock & roll. Until the genre had been around three or four decades, however, how was anyone to really know? Now, at least on the arena level, there are plenty of graybeards still making a stir. So the next question is, Can middle-aged musicians develop into a viable group later in life? The Stone Coyotes make a pretty strong case that you don't need a slew of old hits and a tour sponsorship to win new fans in your September years. The group is fronted by guitarist-vocalist Barbara Keith, who released a major-label album in the early 1970s and went on to pen songs for the likes of Barbra Streisand and Lowell George. Her husband and his thirtysomething son from another marriage round out the trio. The Coyotes work a simple formula to perfection: their music has a bluesy, punky edge, and they eschew beautifying production touches. Keith has a commanding voice that's a little reminiscent of Grace Slick in her prime, and she pens gutsy, stick-in-your-craw tunes. What was it that Van Morrison said? It's too late to stop now. Well, it's also not too late to start. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Cult Classic.......2005-08-03

This cd took me completely off-guard as I only knew Barbara Keith from her gorgeous debut album on vinyl. I was thrilled when at last this album became available on cd and so I ordered - completely unknown to me - also this album from the Stone Coyotes. As Barbara Keith was singing this couldn't be bad. But WOW what a surprise. This cd is very - to say the least - different from het debut but I love it. The pleasure they get from writing, singing and playing bursts out of the speakers (a thing rather rare nowadays as I have the impression that most groups are willing to sing or play anything as long as it sells).
I dare anyone, if you have a car to try this cd and not be thumping the wheel with a wide grin on your face. Love it, love it, love it....

2 out of 5 stars Wanted to like it, but pretentiousness ruined it for me.......2004-09-22

I really wanted to like this CD. I tried, I really did. But in the end, it never got above generic rock for me. Yes, it does rock pretty hard at times, but the main thing I couldn't get past was the pretentiousness of the lyrics. Enough of the heavy-handed Biblical imagery already, Barbara! Leave that sort of thing to Dylan...he knows what to do with it. (In fact, they end this CD with a cover of Bob's "Highway 61 Revisited," and don't do the song any favors.) And while Barbara Keith has power in her voice, I don't hear much soul. Take a listen to Neko Case to hear the difference between a belter and a singer who can mix a strong voice with subtlety.

Musically, the CD is full of pretty straightforward rock riffs, a bit along the lines of Joan Jett without the growl and later ZZ Top. They're basically a competent bar band that needs to lay off the sophomoric "poetry," and honestly, I'm a bit baffled by the overwhelming response this CD has gotten here in the Amazon reviews. I guess this might sound good compared to a lot of what you hear on mainstream radio and MTV (when they play videos) these days -- that is, you'd have to not have been doing much exploring outside the mainstream over the past decade or so. To each their own, in any case, but the lyrics of these songs make me cringe. I need it played with more freewheeling spirit, more heart, more soul, and a little more creativity. A bit of a sense of humor wouldn't kill them either, for that matter.

5 out of 5 stars They Should Be Famous.......2002-12-25

Probably like most people, I discovered the Stone Coyotes via song downloads. after reading some Amazon reviews this free music addict pried open his wallet and purchased this CD. I'm now a fan and I'm hoping for more Stone Coyotes under the Christmas tree.
My assessment is this CD has 4 great original songs (How many best sellers have 1 or even none?), 1 great Dylan cover, and 9 very good original songs. I've played it at least a dozen times and skip nothing, although it took awhile for 3 of the songs to grow on me. It merits and unqualified 5 stars.
The band successfully pulls off rock, punk, ballads, and country. The songwriting and musicianship are excellent. Dad/Hubby is a terrific drummer, in my opinion, and Barbara Keith's appealing, emotive vocal style is a welcome relief from the blaring divas and diva wannabes.
I guarantee, if you like intelligent, mostly up-tempo, spare, yet paradoxically rich rock music, you'll love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest recordings ever made.......2002-11-08

I'm not kidding. If you love genuine rock music, if you love great stories and songs played with passion, if you love loud guitars and drums, if you hate everything on the radio these days, you need The Stone Coyotes! Get it -- get it now. Don't ask questions; just buy it, play it loudly, and watch all your friends' jaws hit the floor when they hear it. Then buy the rest of the Coyotes' albums. This is the real thing. It'll scratch you where it itches!

5 out of 5 stars Great Poetry, Satisfying Musical Basics.......2001-06-21

Barbara Keith, vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter, is quite a poet. The lyrics on this CD invoke the archetypal, the extraordinary, and the sacred in the context of mundane life. Love, death, longing, & the falseness of modern life are some of the themes that crop up.

But this is not a book of poetry, it's a music CD. Barbara Keith has a voice that can hold its own against the likes of Stevie Nix or Janis Joplin. She renders her own lyrics with a strident beauty. She drives her guitar hard, and is well supported by John Tibbles on Bass and Doug Tibbles on drums.

No synthesizers, no London Symphony Orchestra, no rare bird calls or exotic drummers from far away lands fusing in a taste of the unexpected. This is basic, satisfying, rock. But, you don't have to take my word for it, there's a free download of the title song available. Quit lollygagging and give it a listen!

Five stars for poetic lyrics, five stars for basic, uncluttered music, five stars for vocal power. A totally satisfying package.

I know of two songs about the Quecreek miners. The nostalgic, lame, cashing in faux-solemnity of the Buddy and Julie Miller cut - and this track by The Stone Coyotes - "Pennsylvania Coal Mine" is a song that celebrates the survival and heart of the miners and the effort of all to rescue them. With a lyric like "And when someday I die/and they lay me in the ground/my soul shall rise and it will be/the second time around" how can you go wrong?

Plain American Girl is the best damn song I ever heard also. Request it on an indie station, or just buy this CD, it has other great songs too. It's great rock music with lyrics that make you happy to think.

I love this band , and hope they hit it big. You could say they're the best woman-led rock band, but why? They're the best band working today. Period.

The 1998 deaths of Roy Rogers and Gene Autry focused new attention on a much-forgotten subgenre of country music: cowboy songs. This release by the Sons of the San Joaquin may benefit from this renewed interest, but the Sons are no Johnny-come-latelies; they've been making this style of music for years, perfecting the same vocal harmonies and simple acoustic nuances that make these songs such perennial favorites. Lyrics embrace the hard and lonesome life of the archetypical cowboy--cattle drives, "Injun" encounters, and the "unwritten code of the West"--as well as the tough reality of that lifestyle's slow death. It's a smooth ride with expert guides, so sit back and enjoy the sunset. --Alexandra Russell

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2003-01-01

My favorite music is classic italian tenors. San Joaquin's rich harmonies, strong clear voices, and choice of songs make this a recording one I enjoy over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Horses, Cattle and Coyotes.......2000-01-21

Having been a fan on the Sons of the San Joaquin for a long time this cd has again shown me that Lon, Joe, and Jack are the finest of vocal artist today. The blend of their voices are so rich and smooth. The lyrics in this cd as in past cd's paint vivid images in my mind and send me on a mini vacation with every song. Some of the songs I laugh at, some I cry but all are special.

5 out of 5 stars let your imagination go!.......1999-12-25

Not only are Jack, Joe and Lonnie about the nicest guys you'd ever want to rope and ride with, but their music.......well, if you're out drivin in the country, just pop one of their cd's or tapes in the player, and imagine that it's a hundred years ago! Their music is pure, unadulerated pleasure. Likely you might even have to buy another copy cause you'll wear yours out, and for sure you'll want to give these guys to your friends, cause we all have a little cowboy in us!

5 out of 5 stars Horses, Cattle & Coyotes.......1999-12-14

This is one of the Sons' finest efforts, differing from their earliest CDs in that most of the compositions on this one are originals. These fellows have a unique sound. They received praise from Roy Rogers who was pleased that they were continuing the tradition of fine Western harmony and solos, begun by his Sons of the Pioneers many years earlier. The San Joaquin boys grew up on the music of the Pioneers, but have now added their own wonderful (award-winning) compositions to the library of great Western music. A prime example is "He's Running Out of Round-ups" on this CD. But I was also glad to see them include Michael Martin Murphey's "Land of Enchantment", too (listen to the sample!). This CD's a winner!

5 out of 5 stars The Sons of The San Joaquin riding trails into hearts..........1999-08-04

The Sons of the San Joaquin manage again in this superlative album of western music to ride into the listener's heart....As usual with the Sons, the harmonies are rich, full and lush. The songs that Jack Hannah writes will surely be classics in the Cowboy genre for generations to come, with such songs as Ridin' Easy With The Sun and I Ride Along and Dream; every word rings true, and the melodies are memorable, pretty and fitting. Every piece on this collection brings us to a realm where the code of the cowboy lives, and will continue to live. It's difficult to choose a favorite song here -- the Trilogy for Roy, a medley of Shenandoah, Red River Valley and Home on the Range is so seamlessly put together and so beautifully rendered that tears came into my eyes; another fine song is Border Affair, from a traditional poem by Badger Clark, perhaps one of the best of American's premier cowboy poets (If you like this one, you can find Clark's poem A BAD HALF HOUR nicely done on Tom Russell's album Cowboy Real). The Sons of the San Joaquin, in their honest and inimitable way, have produced another masterpiece here. Yippie ti yi yay!
