Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Before moving to the greener pastures of string-heavy countrypolitan, Price was a challenger for the honky-tonk crown. These 20 songs marvelously outline the rapid development of Price's emerging style. His 1951 debut, Lefty Frizzell's "If You're Ever Lonely Darling," finds Price emulating Frizzell's sweet delivery, while two ballads from the following year show Price firmly in Hank Williams territory. By 1953, his voice matured into a booming force, balancing the early sweetness with a hint of spice and a new vigor. The defining moment came in 1956 with the release of "Crazy Arms" and the unveiling of the Western swing-influenced "Ray Price Shuffle." From that point, Price would consistently feature this smooth and steady beat, even covering Bob Wills's "My Shoes Keep Walking Back to You." --Marc Greilsamer

3 out of 5 stars THE ESSENTIAL RAY PRICE.......2007-04-11

I was looking for a cd with all of his great songs spanning the decades of his career. This compilation begins with his early days when he sounds exactly like Hank Williams. I was looking for his trademark sound, the 4,4 shuffle beat. There are more early hits ( when he sounds like Hank ) then when he came into his own. This is still a good cd for any fan but, now I have to look for some of the same songs which are on this cd with his own trademark voice.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2007-04-08

This is essential country music. The "Ray Price Shuffle" sound has been copied by thousands of country artists all over the world and for one very good reason; it sounds fantastic. This albums shows the development of the style and is a must for any comprehensive country music collection. For less than $10 you can get a dose of honky tonk heaven; a heaven where most of todays Country (Pop) acts wouldn't get past the Gates of St. Peter. Also recommened is Ray's ode to heartbreak - "Touch My Heart".

5 out of 5 stars Ray Price: Country Music Giant.......2007-01-11

No country music fan should be without this disc. This is Ray Price's early best. It is all here! That classic ache in his voice makes us feel heartache and "Crazy Arms" is one of the best country songs ever - period - and Ray's version is still the one that all others must be measured by and there are many good others to enjoy. You really cannot be a Country Music fan without this next to your Jimmie Rodgers, Gene Autry, The Sons of the Pioneers,Bob Wills, Hank Williams, Webb Pierce, Johnny Cash,Marty Robbins,Patsy Cline,Louvin Brothers,Jim Reeves, Don Gibson,Buck Owens, Sonny James, Merle Haggard,Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris et al. Its got to be there! So buy and enjoy.

    5 out of 5 stars Where's the 6th Star?.......2007-01-03

Yeah, I'd give this one 6 stars if I could. Ray Price invented the honky tonk sound, and this album clearly documents the development in wonderful progression. Tracks 1-5 are development, 6 through 20 are the best old, hard edge, wintage Texas honky tonk ever recorded. This takes me back to small Texas bars, my fake ID, and Ray Price and the Cherokee Cowboys singing for hours after the bar normally closed, everyone drunk and loving it. The album wisely ends before Ray went weird, singing such pop junk as "Danny Boy" and "For The good Times", and traveling with a frikkin orchestra. This is Ray in that short window of greatness, the true heart of the Texas honky tonk.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW--great honky tonk!.......2006-10-03

This is easily one of the greatest honky tonk CDs available. Why we can't we hear this fanatastic music today? If you want twangy, moaning honky tonk, this is it. This IS country music.
