2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars First Commercial LP and Finest.......2006-05-13

Alabama's pre-fame material remains unfortunately mostly unavailable, and fans still await the reissue of the material of those three albums: Wild Country, Deuces Wild and Alabama No. 3. While those contained original recordings of several of their most famous hits, this first commercial LP sampled some of those songs and made them major hits.

"I Wanna Come Over", produced on MDJ Records, became their first Top 40 country hit in 1979 and was a major regional hit, notably in the Atlanta area. "My Homes In Alabama" also followed on the same label, hitting the Top 20 the following year. While these issues were on smaller labels, the following two commercially produced singles "Tennessee River" and "Why Lady Why" both were instantly #1 hits and were included with those first two Top 40 country charting singles to complete a masterpiece of an album.

Alabama should not be looked at as a singles artist in their earliest years. The first album is a masterpiece with the well-crafted ballads including "Getting Over You" and "Keep On Dreamin'", the second sung by Jeff Cook. Alabama also even tested the limits with disco-charged "Get It While It's Hot" and created a toe tapper with "Hangin' Up My Travelin' Shoes". While not every song may be considered hit material, this first attempt and summary of the tough seven years that preceeded it is an essential part of any Alabama collection and will not disappoint.

1 out of 5 stars Overrated hits band.......2006-04-25

Terrible. I actually liked this band when I was extremely young. I'm glad I woke up and seen them and country music for what it really is.

These guys have too many cheesy type of ballads. Their dull and depressing.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best debut albums ever.......2005-06-21

"My Home's In Alabama" by Alabama is one of the best debut albums ever from any country artist. The first track, the title cut, and their first top 40 country hit, "I Wanna Come Over", were originally released on MDJ records. The latter has a full length version on CD and it's longer than the LP version. The other singles they released went to number one in "Tennessee River" and "Why Lady Why." This was the start of something big for Alabama.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Southern Bands.......2001-09-02

I had the pleasure of actually meeting some of the guys in Alabama at the Bowery in Myrtle Beach, SC in 1979. I was not a fan of country music, on the contrary, did not care for it at all, but was talked into going to listen to them. Now I am glad that I went, because I discovered a group that was destined to make it big. During one of their breaks, I wanted to tell them how good I thought they were so I went to the table where bassist Teddy Gentry was sitting. We chatted for a bit, discussed music and at the time, I was drumming in a band in West Virginia. I asked them where they were headed and he told me they were negotiating a recording contract. Without hesitation I told Teddy that I'd give them a year and they would be the #1 band in the country. He smiled, thanked me for the vote of confidence and then went to finish another set. I handed him one of my band's business cards, wished him good luck and then enjoyed the rest of their music.
I purchased from them, a vinyl album jacketed with a white cover and black pen and ink drawing entitled "Alabama Band #3" which was recorded in an obscure Nashville studio, and I proceeded to wear it out. It contained those timeless classics they grew to be famous for, such as "Why, Lady, Why?", "Can't Forget About You" and of course "My Home's in Alabama". The guys in my band had never heard of them but when they listened to the music, they knew that Alabama would soon to be superstars.
This CD is the debut release, and while a great CD in its own right, you really should hear the previous mentioned "#3" album, it is Alabama in their pure state before corporate recording companies got hold of them. One cut on "#3" that is missing is a song called "Fantasy". It should have been included but was apparently replaced by other songs. "My Home's in Alabama" is the start to a really great collection of this fantastic band.

4 out of 5 stars CLASSIC........2001-03-22

WHEN I FIRST HEARD THAT ALBUM, I FELT LIKE AN OLD SUTHERLAND (FROM "WINNETOU") ON THE WILD WEST IN THE 1800S. AT EVENING, SITTING NEXT TO THE FIRE, PLAYING MY GUITAR AND SINGING SONGS TO THE LADY SITTING NEXT TO ME.

ALL SONGS ARE GREAT (WORTH BUYING) BESIDES "GET IT WHILE IT'S HOT". IT'S NOT A BAD SONG, BUT IT DOESN'T MATCH WITH THE OTHER SONGS ON THE ALBUM. PERFECT BALLADS - "WHY LADY WHY", "SOME OTHER PLACE, SOME OTHER TIME" AND LITTLE FASTER "CAN'T FORGET ABOUT YOU" OR "I WANNA COME OVER".

OLD SOUND OF COUNTRY, GOOD GUITAR ON ALL OF THE SONGS. TIMELESS MUSIC - TO WHICH YOU'LL BE COMING BACK AGAIN AND AGAIN.

5 out of 5 stars Historical Time Capsule.......2000-08-12

This is the most comprehensive recording I've found of songs popular during the Civil War period. The performances are a time capsule of Civil War music.

5 out of 5 stars The start of a great career.......2005-08-31

The title track, a top twenty country hit, made a clear statement about the group's roots. After that hit, Alabama had a long string of number one country hits that began with Tennessee River and Why lady why, two of the tracks on this album.

While the title track sums up exactly what the group is all about, Hang up my travelling shoes (a brilliant upbeat song) seems most inappropriate as Alabama spent the next two decades touring regularly. Other great songs include I wanna come over, Keep on dreaming and Some other place some other time.

Brilliant as it is, this is not Alabama's strongest album but it is well worth buying if you are building a collection of their original albums. If you buy a used copy, be careful - the first CD release of this album only included eight tracks, Tennessee River being one of those omitted. Subsequent CD releases included all ten tracks, just as they appeared on the original album.
