There's more than a bit of delightful holiday camp and irony afoot in the Crash Test Dummies' Jingle All the Way collection, from Brad Roberts' slow-mo delivery of "White Christmas"--with its heavy Hammond Organ--to Ellen Reid's Patsy Cline take of "O Little Town of Bethlehem," done in a convincing country-western style complete with pedal steel guitar. Still, there's serious business in the group's take on "We Three Kings" with the genuine Oriental influence of Ming Xioo-Fen's pipa playing, and Reid's readings of the traditional songs "The Huron Carol" and "In The Bleak Midwinter" are as reverent as standard Christmas songs get. Roberts' basso profoundo, on the other hand, is an acquired taste and he puts it to wickedly good use in "Jingle Bells," which is delivered like a medieval chant or rugby cry that's certain to put the fear in jolly old St. Nick. --Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars Wow ... and now for something different........2007-01-20

I have enjoyed listening to many non Christmas songs from the Crash Test but this one makes me laugh as it is so different from the usual. I enjoy it immensely and if you like the low vocals Ben performs then you should enjoy this one too!

4 out of 5 stars It gave great light........2006-12-02

I first heard the Crash Test Dummies on the 1991 Christmas compilation album called A Lump of Coal. On that album, they performed the best version of "The First Noel" that I had ever heard (and it's still the best version I've ever heard). Cut to 2002, when the Crash Test Dummies finally released a complete Christmas album. It is somewhat disappointing that they didn't write any original songs for the album. But at least they had the sense to include some lesser known carols like "In the Bleak Midwinter" and "The Huron Carol", alongside somewhat overplayed songs like "White Christmas" and "Jingle Bells". Lead vocals are split about evenly between Brad Roberts and Ellen Reed, unlike on a "regular" Crash Test Dummies album, where Ellen almost never sang lead. "The First Noel" is redone here, and while it's quite good, it doesn't quite match the beautiful simplicity of their original version. The songs for the most part are performed in a very lovely style, with occasional silly touches thrown in. Overall, quite an enjoyable Christmas album.

5 out of 5 stars Totally gorgeous music!.......2006-11-17

I fell in love with The First Noel when Kurt Browning skated to it one year, and looked for this CD for ages before I just found it. I knew no other work by CTD and was prepared for anything. Well, I THOUGHT I was! I have totally fallen in love with this CD and listen to it all the time! I have always HATED the song Jingle Bells, but find that this version I can actually LOVE! GRYMG is like jazz or soft shoe or something, but is really nice. And I hate almost all jazz, so that is saying something! In the Bleak MidWinter, there just are not words to describe. Angelic and haunting. Just beautiful (it's playing now on repeat)! They do a lot of the verses on the hymns, which is unusual for Christmas albums, and which I love. The other songs are just beautiful; especially WTK and DBoy. The First Noel is stunning. The songs are different in that they sound heartfelt and real. Like it's just people really singing, instead of some big theatrical production for a record. I really love the simplicity. It has a folksy feel to me. I will definitely be giving these for gifts too, and am really glad I found this. I really don't think anyone would be disappointed with this.

4 out of 5 stars Cool, different, AND pleasant listening.......2006-01-21

I was not familiar with The Dummies work and bought this based on the reviews because I was over the same old recordings of Christmas fare.

This is really fun. A gregarian "Jingle Bells," some new voices and arrangements on traditional carols, and a great rendition of "In the Bleak Mid-winter." I am actually purchasing this a gifts for both my 55 year old sister and my 22 year newphew's stockings next year. I think they will equally enjoy it.

PS: For those of us who got it on to the Moody Blues in our youth, their album "December" is a must have. Similarly a big surprise from a non-traditional group.

5 out of 5 stars A great mix of comedy and beautiful music.......2005-09-04

Those who see "Crash Test Dummies" and "Christmas" in the same sentence may think of some odd cross of "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" and "Silver Bells". This album does indeed have some tunes we've come to expect of Brad Roberts but also has some stunningly beautiful renditions.

"White Christmas" is even deeper and raspier than the version sung by the Drifters. Bing Crosby, who is a great singer in his own right, would spin in his grave if he heard this. "O Little Town of Bethlehem" is an Ellen Reid track and is very well done with a modern feel. The version of "Jingle Bells" features the most bizzare harmonies you'll ever hear in a Christmas song. Anyone who has any kind of apathy toward Christmas will get a good kick out of this one. Believe it or not it's in C Minor...the song is historically done in a major key. Plus it has Brad's raspy baritone. The next track, "In the Bleak Midwinter", is so beautiful it will put you in tears. Sung by Ellen Reid, this is arguably her best work. "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" sounds like an odd cross of the music you hear in Bob Evans and the "Ghosts that Haunt Me" album. It and the next track are both done by Brad. "We Three Kings" isn't a commonly recorded tune in the Christmas music business but this version is done well and is heavy on percussion, making it interesting. "Little Drummer Boy" is a somewhat modernized version of the old classic and features Ellen again. Both Brad and Ellen shine on "The First Noel", which is one of the best tracks on this disc. Ellen does a great job on "Silent Night", which is one of the more upbeat Silent Nights you'll find. The "Good King Wenceslas" is done in a similar fashion to "We Three Kings" and is Brad's job again. Ellen shines on "Huron Carol", which I think is a Canadian carol. Like most CTD albums this last track is slower and features lots of piano (see also "Unititled" from GSHF and "At My Funeral" from GTHM).

Even if you're not a CTD fan this is worth it for the "In the Bleak Midwinter". It's not even Christmas and I just listened to it...that's how powerful it is...

As far as Hollywood's holiday offerings go this Yuletide season, I'll take Schwarzenegger and Sinbad doing slapstick over a bunch of spotted puppies running amok any day, and the soundtrack to Jingle All the Way is not too bad, either. There are a few standards- Chuck Berry's "Run Rudolph Run," Nat King Cole's "Christmas Song," and Charles Brown's "Merry Christmas Baby"-but the real draw is the Brian Setzer Orchestra doing the ol' Buster Poindexter routine on some of your favorites, including "Sleigh Ride" with vocals by the great Darlene Love (the driving force behind Phil Spector's A Christmas Gift to You). The former Stray Cat's new band also backs velvety-voiced Lou Rawls on a version of "So They Say It's Christmas" which is pretty darn swell. The album gets docked a notch, though, for being a little skimpy at only 10 tunes plus some filler from the instrumental score. --Jim Derogatis

3 out of 5 stars Nice Christmas Music.......2007-01-18

I guess it is easy to get carried away and want a soundtrack when you are watching a movie.... Some of the track makes NO sense without the movie.
Anyway , there are some decent songs to make Christmas feelings flow.

5 out of 5 stars Christmastime Classic.......2006-03-06

There are 12 songs on this soundtrack. The 4 songs on here with the Brian Setzer Orchestra - AMAZING. Those songs along justify buying the whole thing!! That rendition of "Jingle Bells" has to be the best ever recorded. Upbeat with the horns and Setzers magnificent guitar playing - this is meant to be played at full volume when you're in your car making a mad dash to the mall for those last minute Christmas shopping items.

The song "So They Say It's Christmas" with the late, great Lou Rawls is a slow, mellow tune featuring Brian Setzer on acoustic guitar and Lou's rich baritone vocals. A winner.

Next we have "Sleigh Ride" with Darlene Love's vocals. This is another quick-paced numbe with horns and Setzer's fancy fretwork. Refer to the notes for "Jingle Bells" - the same applies here.

We all know are likely familiar with most of the next 8 songs - some classics here we never tire of during the holidays.

Former Montose / Van Halen vocalist Sammy Hagar makes a surprise co-writing appearance on the final track - "Deep In The Heart Of XMas" with Darlene Love teaming up with Brain Setzer Orchestra again. A great way to end the CD. This is one of my favorites Christmas CD's ever. The Brian Setzer Orchestra has recorded two other Christmas CD's that are also excellent - check out BOOGIE WOOGIE CHRISTMAS and DIG THAT CRAZY CHRISTMAS. "Jingle Bells" on this soundtrack is also recorded on BOOGIE WOOGIE CHRISTMAS, but the two tracks sound slightly different and I prefer the movie version of that song. I recommend you get them all.

4 out of 5 stars One Of The Better Christmas Movie Soundtracks.......1998-11-24

This collection kicks off with the Brian Setzer Orchestra's EXCELLENT version of Jingle Bells-these guys really rock out, and when they're joined by the marvelous Darlene Love on Sleigh Ride & Deep In The Heart Of Xmas-look out! While rest of the album includes the usual Merry Christmas Baby by Charles Brown; Run Rudolph Run by Chuck Berry & the ultimate holiday rock song Jingle Bell Rock by Bobby Helms, Setzer & gang carry it home. Now if only The Brian Setzer Orchestra would do an entire album of Christmas tunes!

Anyone familiar with the Crash Test Dummies' 1993 hit "Mmm Mmm Mmm" is apt to agree that, over the course of an entire CD, singer Brad Roberts's froglike baritone is probably an acquired taste. It may also be hard to imagine a Christmas album delivered by that voice, even if a 1991 alternative rock compilation did feature the Dummies performing a version of "The First Noel" (rerecorded here) that still gets plenty of airplay every December. Fortunately, Roberts isn't the band's only vocalist; the soulful, mournful Ellen Reid takes the lead on five tracks, including the gorgeous "In the Bleak Midwinter." Roberts is pretty much the voice on the others, though--and if you can imagine Leonard Cohen crooning "White Christmas" over a skating rink organ, Tom Waits recording "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," and a "Jingle Bells" straight out of a German expressionist film, then you have some idea of what's here. This is an acquired taste, perhaps, but it's certainly one of the better idiosyncratic holiday releases of recent times. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars simply the best.......2006-12-19

i would like to start by saying that they could not have chosen a better set of songs. brad's and ellen's voices are great and thier respective voices fit in great with the songs each of them sing. this album is great because each song is an ancient classic. "THE REAL CHRISTMAS SONGS" and not that stuff made up by an artist who wants to write his own christmas tune. you hear the song once and never again. the songs that the crash test dummies covered you will hear over and over again for the next million years on tv, radio, kids singing door to door. and lest not we forget that a christmas album is not a christmas album without some of the tunes that dickens used in his film a christmas carol. such as "god rest ye merry gentlemen and good king wenceslas" however the most important thing is that the songs were not modified, they kept with the basic tunes of the original versions. i bought this cd hands down because the crash test dummies are a good group and also i was curious to hear what brad would sound like singing x-mas songs great go out and buy this cd

1 out of 5 stars painful.......2002-12-25

even the most ardent fans will have a hard time listening to this painful butchering of christmas classics.

5 out of 5 stars Low Down Christmas Classic.......2002-12-13

I'll be the first to admit that I bought this title on a lark, a whimsy, in a burst of curiousity. I have listened to the "Jingle All The Way" disc a number of times and have heard something different to admire on each new listen. Those persons who were fans of the Crash Test Dummies will certainly vouch that the band's calling card has long been Brad Roberts' sub-baritone vocal stylings. What was lost on this listener in my limited exposure to CTD was the voice of Ellen Reid. Her soaring highs stand in stark contrast to Roberts' lows.
Quite simply, this disc contains the best rendition of "We Three Kings" I have ever heard. Other highlights include the swingersque "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and the harmonies on "Little Drummer Boy" The only song that wasn't quite up to par was the version of "Silent Night." But that minor flaw pales in comparison to the enjoyment I receive each time I play it. I expect this to be a December favorite for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A Twised Christmas album!!!.......2002-11-17

This CD is great! The songs are traditional Christmas songs made better by the sweet haunting voice of Ellen Reid, and the deep purring voice of Brad Roberts. Quite a few are sung with a twisted, almost parody-like quality due to Roberts' deep baritone. It's not even Christmas yet and I'm already in the spirit!!!

5 out of 5 stars Ring in the Holiday Season with Jingle All The Way!.......2002-10-13

This year, it'll be a twisted Christmas indeed...
For those of you looking for something different in music for the Holiday Season, you can do no better than The Crash Test Dummies newest album, Jingle All The Way. Taking Christmas music to a whole new level, this CD is guaranteed to delight. True to their tradition, the Dummies are renowned to change their style with every album, and this one is no exception. A mix of mood, country, medieval and jazz, it's a fusion of all styles - there's something for everyone. As always, the music features the talents of Brad Roberts's unbelievably deep voice and his twisted sense of humor. Additionally, the haunting melodies of Ellen Reid are unforgettable. Not your traditional holiday fodder, this CD encompasses all of the strange magic that is the Crash Test Dummies with a new genre of holiday standbys that you will listen to year after year. RECOMMENDED USE: light a fire, turn off all the lights except for those on the tree, make yourself a cocktail, sit back on the couch and experience something new. Buy one for yourself, and get a couple extra to wrap and put under the tree. This is going to be a Christmas you'll never forget.
