As the liner notes remark, there's a terrific "sense of love and inspiration" in this utterly ripping collection of all-star renditions of Elvis standards. Cuts from Dwight Yoakam, Travis Tritt, Amy Grant, a fired-up Billy Joel, and a killer "Burning Love" from country outlaw Travis Tritt are highlights. --Jeff Bateman

We're the Flying Elvises...Utah chapter!.......2007-02-22
HONEYMOON IN VEGAS was a fun movie, and the soundtrack album is equally enjoyable. Unspoiled by incidental film music or dialog snippets, this Elvis Presley tribute collection by some of the best modern country and rock artists holds up well 15 years later. A must-have for all fans of The King.

Where's Springsteen's Viva Las Vegas?.......2006-08-28
As with most albums of this nature (basically a "tribute" album, even though it's a soundtrack), there are winners and losers. What you like or don't like will probably depend on whether or not you like the artist covering the song. I like most of the artists here, with a couple of exceptions. Also, with albums such as this, the cover versions are rarely as good as the originals. That, too, is true of 'Honeymoon In Vegas.'
Unfortunately, the one song that comes close to the original (keeping in mind that several of these, as done by Elvis, were actually covers of songs he liked) is not on the soundtrack album. That would be "Viva Las Vegas" by Bruce Springsteen, famous New Jersey rocker and longtime Elvis fan. Springsteen was smart to avoid a carbon copy of the original, a great Doc Pomus/Mort Shuman composition. He gives the pop song, which was quite original in Elvis's hands and one of his most underrated movie tunes, a very loose, rockin' treatment - almost a roadhouse feel. Springsteen sings the song as a lovable loser, busted and heading back to Bakersfield. (Singer/Songwriter Freedy Johnston portrays a similar character in "The Lucky One" on his great 1992 album 'Can You Fly') I don't think Springsteen's version of "Viva Las Vegas" is available on any of his official releases, but find it if you can. It is on a very hard-to-find import charity CD titled 'The Last Temptation of Elvis' which, as an Elvis tribute album, I enjoy more than 'Honeymoon In Vegas.' I would also recommend another related, hard-to-find import titled 'Elvis Chante (Sings) Pomus & Shuman.' It includes Elvis's version of "Viva Las Vegas" as well as the songwriter's demo.
THREE STARS FOR THREE SMOKIN'-HOT TUNES..........2006-08-28
... notably, 1) Billy Joel's "All Shook Up"; 2) Travis Tritt's "Burning Love"; 3) Dwight Yoakam's "Suspicious Minds". An honorable mention goes to Ricky Van Shelton's "Wear My Ring Around Your Neck"... most disappointing cover was John Mellencamp's "Jailhouse Rock" - he's got what it takes to rock it, but he totally wimped out (oh, the shame!). And as for Bryan Ferry... what's that artsy-fartsy fruitcake doing on this soundtrack??? And Amy Grant? Puh-leaze. She's the musical poster girl for the Reader's Digest crowd. The travelling salvation show went that-a-way, Amy!
The Most Perfect Wedding Song.......2006-02-13
Hearing Fools Rush In by Bono was one of the most thrilling moments for me. My husband and I used this song for our 'first dance' - it is truly beautiful. It's the perfect song for anything, but especially for that first dance!
Pedestrian Tribute to a risk taking artist.......2005-12-19
The majority of the songs on this album are straight forward karaoke renditions of the original Elvis tunes. You could hear versions just as good at almost any local lounge on a Thursday night. There is not really much special here EXCEPT a very cool, stylish version of "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" by Brian Ferry, a wonderfully sweet "Blue Hawaii" by Wille Nelson and a haunting version of "Can't Help Falling in Love" by Bono. Most fans will probably HATE Bono's take on CHFIL and I'm sure that would make the King proud. Remember, when he first arrived on the scene EP was a very controversial artist, a white boy bringing "colored" music to the masses. Elvis the Pelvis was decried from more pulpits-esp. in his native South-than just about any other musical artist before or since. What Bono has done with his eerie version is turn a straight forward love song into an ode of longing and obsession. And of course, most serious Elvis fans are more than a little obsessed, aren't they? But that's OK because, I guess, they can't help it
