Sensual, seductive, and above all smoky, the latest from k.d. lang is a collection of a dozen tunes that all have some connection to smoking--usually in the romantic, post-coital sense--done up in a lush, orchestrated fashion. Some of these tunes are standards, such as "Smoke Dreams" and "My Last Cigarette," while others are just plain strange selections given some of the oddest readings imaginable. Case in point: the cover of Steve Miller's "The Joker." lang's voice is an incredible instrument, and it's a treat to hear her vamping. But you have to wonder what she's up to, especially because she seems to just say no to tobacco herself, --Jim Derogatis

Joanna Newsom's voice--a piercing flutter that's pitched somewhere between Björk and a hand brake--is an acquired taste. But to the uninitiated, it's not nearly as impenetrable as her cosmic poetry or, for that matter, baroque music. The 24-year-old Californian harpist's second album is a five-track concept piece loosely based on its namesake, the mythological drowned city of the Bretons. We say "loosely" because she leaves plenty of room for digressions on meteoroids and birds flying into windows. While Ys was recorded by minimalist Steve Albini (Nirvana, PJ Harvey), it includes lush string arrangements by Van Dyke Parks (Brian Wilson) and the final mix was done by sonic experimentalist Jim O'Rourke (Sonic Youth, Tortoise). The result is an album that sounds unlike anything else. And despite containing spectacularly beguiling songs that stretch out past 15 minutes, every second seems to drip with magic. You certainly don't get that with Ashlee Simpson. --Aidin Vaziri

Having long recorded as Palace Music or Palace, the enigmatic, elusive Bonnie "Prince" Billy continues to confound musical expectations. His latest may well be his loveliest, a series of meditations and tone poems on love and mortality, with the autumnal strains of a chamber quartet and the vocal counterpoint of Dawn McCarthy supporting Billy's tremulous expression of his surreal, stream-of-consciousness lyricism. Results range from the dreamy, bluesy "Cursed Sleep" and the evocation of a British madrigal on "No Bad News" to the discordant propulsion of "The Seedling" and the call and response of the folkish "Then the Letting Go." It all fits together in a manner that defies categorization and dares the listener to resist its aural seduction. --Don McLeese

Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

lovely, deceptively simple.........2007-06-12
for me, this new ep makes up for the pretensions of the Ys album; the band is amazing, and newsom has never sounder better.
i hope this bodes well for the future, for one of my favorite artists.
Addictive Beware!.......2007-05-23
It took me almost 2 years to warm up to her first album MIlk Eyed Mender. My brother in law would play it over and over again when we went to visit. Then after one of our visits I couldn't shake the songs from my head and I had to hear them! I was hooked! This ep is also addictive! Newsom's songs have an optimistic and other worldly elegance that is missing in mainstream music culture. These songs are especially endearing, ( is it the band accompaniment?) and I especially love the mix of melodies pointing to a more ethnic sound in some of the songs. A mixing of sounds, it's fantastic.
I Wouldn't Get Too Excited About This.......2007-04-25
The new song, "Colleen," is, lyric-wise, alarmingly close to boilerplate dorm-room Tori Amosity. (The only Joanna-ish touch is that the song's awakening-to-her-oppression heroine seems to be a were-whale.)
Both "Milk-Eyed Mender" and "Ys" have a muscularity to the playing and singing that's absent here--the arrangements (performed with a small acoustic combo) are much more noodly, and Joanna sings in a more "controlled" (i.e, less yelpy) manner.
For me this EP lacks the loopy imagination and expansiveness of her previous two records. I hope the relatively-lackluster songs here don't represent the shape her future work will take.
A Little Gem........2007-04-24
An EP with only three tracks, only one of which being a new song. Doesn't sound particularly promising does it?
Well by way of an answer it should be pointed out that all the tracks are new recordings and the total runtime is just over 24 minutes.
The songs were recorded at the end of the U.S. tour (Autumn 2006 in California)after having to cancel three gigs due to a lost voice, the songs were recorded 'live' in the studio with her tour band and minimal tinkering. Her vocal troubles certainly aren't evident here, although her voice seems to get richer and less spikey with each new recording.
Anyone lucky enough to have caught her recent live shows will be familiar with the new song here ("Colleen") and the new version of "Clam,Crab,Cockle,Cowrie"(from "The Milk Eyed Mender"album) but british fans will not have heard "Cosmia" in this form as they had the benefit of orchestral backing not available on the american tour.
"Colleen" starts the EP off with a frenetic energy and is typically untypical of anything else out there, it's kind of folky, kind of sea shanty and breaks the verses with a strange flamenco/belly dancing jig that should have you on your feet and jumpin'.
It's followed by a new recording of "Clam,Crab,Cockle,Cowrie" which is fully justified as it is very different from the album version, an almost achingly tender rendition that shows a softer side to the artist, it also benefits from the addition of an accompanying voice, richer instrumentation, and the richer vocal delivery already evident on the "Ys" album. It is possibly my favourite on the EP.
The final track("Cosmia") is in some ways the most exciting prospect as it takes the original and expands it to double its previous lengh replacing the orchestration with a rich variety of sounds utilising the band to its full. I don't think it improves on the original but will certainly be of interest to those who argued that they'd have preferred "Ys" without the orchestration (not my view). The song feels slightly more gentle here than on the album but no less rich for it.
I would say that this is definitely one for the converts (newcomers should start with "Ys") but if you are already a fan then this is an essential purchase.
A final word on categorisation of music. I hate it! This need to pigeon-hole and fence music within little boundaries. If anything new or excitingly different comes along (like this), instead of celebrating its singular beauty, there is a rush to be the first to coin the term that will peg it back. If that weren't bad enough there are a million followers-on who have to prove how smart they are by using the terminology as if it were there own. Thus we have people describing this album as 'freak-folk' a category which, if it exists at all, has been used to describe acoustic driven performers with a hypnotic trippy rythmic feel. Joanna Newsom has actively denied the tag herself and her music is actually nothing like anything in the genre (if it even exists) in fact the only connection is that she has been on stage with some acts that hover on the fringes of the genre. It really comes down to lazy journalism and second-rate 'would-be-critics'who'd like to appear smart at the expense of artists who possess genuine talent.
For all those people who need a category for this music here is one: Joanna Newsom.
Freakfolkery.......2007-04-24
Joanna Newsom is one of the great indie musicians of our time -- just look at last year's "Ys," a sprawling masterpiece of freakfolk.
And after the solemnities of "Ys," apparently Newsom has decided to go a bit more lighthearted. "Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band" is an unpretentious little EP, with some new songs and new takes on older songs -- a fun little treat.
It opens with the strong folky chords of "Colleen," a slice of Celtic-flavoured balladry that trickles through an oddball melody. "I tell it as I best know how," croons Newsom in her crazy-fairy voice. "Pick me up and toss me round/I lost my shoes and tore my best gown..."
She then follows it up with new versions of two older songs: the gentle haunting reimagining of "Clam Crab Cockle Cowrie," and a full-band version of "Cosmia," which seems nicely fleshed-out and polished.
After to the legendary grandeur of "Ys," this little EP seems relaxed and laid-back, as if Newsom and her band had sauntered into a coffee shop and done an impromptu set. They're done with an ear for fun, but that doesn't take the delicate, appealing edge from the music.
Her twangly, delicate harp is matched up with some decent banjo tunes, and what sounds like some soft drums, all mingled together. In "Clam Crab Cockle Cowrie," we mostly just get gentle strums from the harp. And over it all is Newsom's creaky, meandering vocals, wandering through the melody like a sleepy fairy.
One new song and two reworkings, but "Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band" is stil worth getting for anyone who likes eerie, weird little folk songs.

The second album by this Wilco side project has a nicely resilient band quality to it. Originally seen as Jeff Tweedy's noisier outlet, it's arguably as tuneful as his main band's most recent releases. A trio with Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche and producer/utility player/solo artist Jim O'Rourke, most of the songs are clearly the result of group interplay. However, it's the finishing touches, from arrangement flourishes to lyrics, that make them rise about hipster jamming. And just when you thought every cool guitar riff has already been discovered, the set starts off with a bang as "Hey Chicken" lets loose with a dazzler. There follows everything from an easy country groove ("The Ruling Class") to power pop ("Stupid As the Sun") and beautifully fragile balladry ("Answers to Your Questions"), to plenty more smart and mammoth guitar sounds. --David Greenberger
Customer Reviews:
I Liked It Better than the Most Recent Wilco CD.......2007-06-12
I hate to say it, but I was disappointed in the last Wilco CD, "Sky Blue Sky." I found it much too laid back for the band that did "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot." Thankfully, an amazon reviewer turned me on to Loose Fur, which is fronted by Wilco lead singer and songwriter Jeff Tweedy. I was hoping "Sky Blue Sky" would be what this album is: 37 minutes of sometimes loud, always thoughtful rock music. That's not to say that all the tracks on "Born Again in the USA" (which is a loose concept album on American religion) is, like the first track "Hey Chicken," full of distorted guitars. Jim O'Rourke's tunes are mostly acoustic and soft-spoken, but they complement Tweedy's louder tracks. The first song, Tweedy's energetic "Hey Chicken" (with the line, "I'm living rent free, in the back of your head") knocked me out in a way good rock should. Tweedy might be getting a bit tired with Wilco, which has been putting out albums for 12 years now. But if he keeps making albums like "Born Again" with Loose Fur, that's not such a bad thing. The band is a tight, crack unit, and they also have a sense of humor (most prominently featured on O'Rourke's "Thou Shalt Wilt"). Now that I've found out about them, I look forward to buying their 2003 album.
Great pop.......2007-05-17
***1/2 - I really hesitated picking this up after being so disappointed in A Ghost is Born, but I'm glad I did. Most of the songs come in at around 3 minutes, which is part of their charm. This is good, fun, breezy pop rock. And given the material, I don't even mind O'Rourke's voice all that much. Somehow it fits on "Answers to Your Questions", which offers a nice slower tempo song amidst the lighter tunes around it.
The only reason I didn't give it 4 stars is because of "Wreckroom", which features great 70s style guitar work but is eventually marred by the irritating wall of noise guitar style that, for me, ruined much of Ghost. Take that out and lop off the last 4 minutes of the song, and it would be my favorite song on the CD.
Get your Tweedy fix.......2006-10-08
I've been a Wilco fan for years, and love everything Wilco related. But no side projection/incarnation has captivated me the way the Loose Fur project has. The Tweedy/O'Rourke combination is unmatched in indy rock today, in my opinion. In a time when any yahoo can make a record in their bedroom with plug-ins and the like, the Loose Fur records are minimal-production marvels that allow the songs to speak for themselves. And they are amazing songs. In many ways (and I expect a ton of flack for this), better than some of the recent Wilco stuff.
Good at First, But Fades Over Time.......2006-08-17
I've been listening to this album since it leaked onto the internet several months prior to its release. At first, I thought it was incredible. As times passed, however, I found myself listening less and less. Now I still come back to the standouts (mostly Tweedy's tracks) but I don't find myself desiring to hear the full album when I sit down to listen. It's still good and songs like "Hey Chicken" and "Thou Shalt Wilt" will knock your socks off.
Good follow up.......2006-08-15
Songs like "Hey Chicken" deserve to be released as singles. If you are a Wilco fan from Ghost is Born, you will find this an interesting listenable CD. I wish they would cut out a minute of noise here and there, but this overall is a very enjoyable CD for anyone jonsing for some new Tweedy/O'Rourke stuff.
