Customer Reviews:
Quality album full of great songs.......2005-01-24
Lari had a certain amount of success with her second album, Wishes, but this follow-up album attracted insufficient attention from American country radio stations and her record label dropped her although she has recorded albums for other labels since then, most notably Green eyed soul, which has made some impact in Britain - a welcome surprise, as I thought Lari's career was over by then.
The album opens with a 33-second chorus of the classic Cole Porter song originally recorded by Bing Crosby and the Andrews sisters, her performed live with Trisha Yearwood and Shelby Lynne. In this brief version, it sounds much as you would expect it to sound. Later in the album (the last named track), Lari does a full-length solo version, this time given a completely different (speeded up) arrangement. I prefer the original arrangement but Lari's is well worth a listen.
Between those contrasting versions of the title track is a wonderful selection of contemporary country songs, all of them originals and several co-written by Lari including Ready willing and able (different from the Doris Day oldie) and Woman of the world (different from the Loretta Lynn oldie). Australian country fans will recognize the brilliant up-tempo song, Wild at heart, which Beccy Cole (an excellent Aussie country singer) covered for one of her albums. Most of the album is filled with ballads, at which Lari excels.
After the main album finishes, there is a long pause then a hidden track - a second version of Soul searching blues, much longer than the 42-second version in the main album.
This is a brilliant album that should have consolidated Lari's career but didn't. Nevertheless, if you enjoy contemporary country music, nineties style, you should enjoy this album.
An Excellent Album.......2004-04-04
This is an absolutley magnificent album. I love it dearly and find it just wonderful to listen to in any mood. Lari White covers a lot of terriory on this record from broken relationships to just falling in love to being a free spirit. I would recommend this album in the highest reguards, it is one of my all time favourites.
SUPER!.......2003-10-06
I loved this CD.
If you like country music its a must have!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Let theyself be hereby dubbed.........Best Broadway Tune Vocalist..........2007-06-21
Of my dozens and dozens of Broadway music performances, I find only one singer can be dubbed "Best." That person, Thomas Hampson, is thee. While show performers and ballad singers have all had their way with these tunes, only one is across-the-board great in them.
And whether or not these are the "best" representative songs of Porter is a moot point, something entirely up to personal taste. The point is that these songs have not been better performed by an individual male singer. It certainly doesn't hurt, either, that the great John McGlinn was on board as conductor/director (and likely strongly involved in arranging).
****
This isn't a vanity crossover project but Cole Porter with art and style.......2006-07-17
The glut of crossover albums that came our way in the ripe era of Pavarotti and Domingo has abated, leaving not the best taste in the mouth. But there were some high points, and this 1991 Cole Porter collection from Thomas Hampson is a gorgeous example. Like his hero from the 30s, Lawrence Tibbett, who triumphed as much on radio as in the opera house, Hampson sings full out, applying an overtly operatic baritone to popular song. He has such a command of vocal technique that, as with Tibbett and more recently Ben Heppner, the glory of the vocalism would carry the day on its own.
But Hampson adds to this a good deal of finesse, humor, and suavity--particularly the last. "Begin the Beguine" and "In the Still of the Night" convey the cosmopolitan asurance that is a Cole Porter trademark. There are also some bigger songs, such as "It Was Written in the Stars," where Hampson can unleash his voice at full force, a thrilling experience. I don't think there's been an opera star who's made a Cole Porter recording other than Kiri Te Kanawa, in forty years. This is a very enjoyable one indeed.
pure self indulgent garbage.......2006-04-22
SOMEONE PLEASE STOP THOMAS HAMPSON, BEFORE HE HURTS HIMSELF...OR HURTS THE REST OF US....What a collective piece of trash this album is?..is there a more self-important, bloated, indulgent, precious, affected, pompous singer on the planet?...i am waiting for Thomas Hampson sings Disco...or Thomas Hampson sings Elton John...or Thomas Hampson does Eminem?...he probably thinks he could pull 'em off...what unmitigated gaul...don't waste your money here
Thank god, no astaire or kelly singing on this one.......2001-04-30
This was a great listen and it was finally nice to hear trained singers doing Porter. Can't stand it when I hear a lilting Porter song in an MGM film and then Astaire or Gene Kelly decide to try and sing it, usually off key, and end up slaughtering the number. Great to hear some of the old stuff and different takes on other standards.
Cole must have been watching over this project.......2000-09-06
John McGlinn's orchestrations on this compilation of Cole Porter tunes have as much to do with the brilliance of this CD as Mr Hampson's vocal renderings. Both have that lush sound that make a Porter tune sound like what this reviewer believes Porter would have appreciated, judging by his own versions of his songs, and the arrangements that he was involved in. McGlinn remained faithful to those original arrangements and added a few of his own ideas and along with modern day recording improvements produced a sound that I think Porter would very much approve of. My only complaint is the selection of songs, but that as always comes down to personal taste. However in doing so I was tuned into a few songs that I had never heard before, some of which are now among my favorite Porter songs. Specifically, 'Who said Gay Paree' is a sublime version of a lesser known Porter tune. It is one of his tunes about Paris but unlike the others its a sad tune of love lost with McGlinn and Hampson both at their finest. Another one new to me was'My Cozy Little Corner In the Ritz' an early Porter tune with him at his sarcastic best and a brilliant rendition. The standards are all briliantly done. 'In the Still of the Night' is my favorite, followed by I Concentrate on You', 'Easy To Love', 'Night and Day' (edging out Sinara's version, but not quite as magical as Fred Astaire's from the movie 'Gay Divorcee', but close) 'I've Got You Under My Skin' is divine, Begin the Beguine and 'Don't Fence me in'. All the others are great versions but none would make my top 50 Porter tunes. With the convenience of tracking with CD's though I program my favorites in and hear an hour of heavenly music from one of my favorite tunesmiths as interpreted by two contemporary masters of our time.

Amazon.com
Don't Fence Me In anthologizes cowboy music for greenhorns. Which isn't a bad thing at all! The 14 titles included here are culled from the catalogs of the genre's most popular practitioners and represent the era (roughly the late '30s through the mid-'40s) when guitar-strumming cowpokes ruled the airwaves and the silver screen. Thus one is presented with Gene Autry crooning "Back in the Saddle Again," Tex Ritter kicking up his heels with "Jingle, Jangle, Jingle," and Roy Rogers taking a shot at "Don't Fence Me In." The likes of Bob Wills, Rosalie Allen, and the Sons of the Pioneers flesh out the album. While there are penetrating cowboy collections out there (this is the second release in Rounder's four-part cowboy series, so check out Cattle Call, Stampede!, and Saddle Up! for a thorough overview of Western music), this one is rife with the setting-sun romanticism that once fired America's matinee imagination. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
Very good overall, but with a couple of clunkers.......2000-02-18
This disc is an excellent sampler of early cowboy music by Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Tex Ritter, Sons of the Pioneers, etc. I stopped "one star short" in my rating, however, because of two tracks that I wish were different. The obligatory comic relief is provided by a song titled "Wa-Hoo", in which a member of the band shouts out these words at various story-related places (e.g., what Anthony said when he first saw Cleopatra!). The song is neither cowboy nor amusing. Keep that remote control handy. The next track, by Elton Britt(?), was recorded in 1954, more than a decade later than the average date of the other pieces. Not only is the performance style more modern, the sound quality--full and resonant--comes as a shock after your ears get adjusted to the lean sound of the other tracks. I would rather have heard an earlier work by this artist. Aside from these admittedly minor nits that I felt obliged to pick, the disc is a lot of fun. It also includes a truly beautiful, haunting song (Dusty Skies) by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. Listeners who might be deterred because they don't like the "Country Swing" style of Bob Wills need not fear. This is one of the prettiest, most moving western songs I have ever heard. If the recording were on vinyl, the track would get worn out quickly from repeated playing. One more point: The sound of even the oldest pieces is great and approaches demonstration quality when one considers their age. In summary, a highly recommended collection that could have been even better and probably will be most enjoyed by die-hard fans of cowboy music.

Perfect Porter.......2001-06-27
It will be a remarkable feat indeed if this recording of Porter standards is ever surpassed. Feyer, a classically trained pianist, has a remarkably deft touch and an uncanny knack for the driving, rhythmic vitality of Porter's music. Acoustic guitar, drums, and other percussive instruments provide an essential, but unobtrusive, rhythmic foundation throughout. Thirty-four pieces are packed onto the disc, one often merging skillfully into the next, to form a series of three colossal medleys. Although recorded in the pre-digital era, the sound quality of this Vanguard Classics disc equals or surpasses the best contemporary recordings. If you like Porter, this one's a sure bet; if you think you don't like Porter, this one will change your mind.
