Gene Autry was perhaps less a singing cowboy than the prototype for all singing cowboys. He made his mark by representing an Americana that was all old-style Western romance and clear blue skies. His yodeling hasn't held up well, but his emphasis on both types of music--"country and and western," as the joke goes--has made him among the first that people think of when they dream of how the West was won. Here, he sings solo and in duets with Rosemary Clooney, the Mitchell Choirboys, the Cass County Boys and the King Sisters, and the Pinafores. The recordings cover the post-World War II era, between 1947 through 1956, and include many Christmas faves, including "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Frosty the Snowman," and "Jingle Bells," among them. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories.......2007-02-23

This was my favorite album as a child. I have looked for it for years and was delighted when Amazon emailed me that it was in their inventory. This CD means Christmas to me. I absolutely love it.

5 out of 5 stars Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer CD.......2007-01-15

This was the music my children listened to as they were growing up. But we listened to it on vinyl records. I bought each one of them the CD. They all said it brought a smile to their faces and a lot of good memories. The sound was even better than the old record.

5 out of 5 stars This item was exactly as I remembered it!.......2007-01-09

This album was an all time favorite when I was growing up. My sisters and brothers all adored it. The CD version is identical to what the album was. I think there are a couple more songs on it, but they are every bit as good as the rest of the album. Anyone buying this album for a little reminiscing will love it!

5 out of 5 stars I Love This C.D........2006-11-18

LISTENING TO THIS C.D. MAKES ME THINK OF MY CHILDHOOD SPENDING CHRISTMAS WITH MY GRANDPARENTS. OF WHICH WHOM HAVE PAST I EVEN GOT MY SISTER ONE SHE ALSO LOVES IT. SO SIT BACK LISTEN AND REMEMBER. MERYY CHRISTMAS

2 out of 5 stars I don't even know where to begin..........2006-10-21

As a Gene Autry fan, particularly of his Christmas recordings, I was really looking forward to this release. But...what a disappointment! I will look over the dropouts - obviously the source tapes have deteriorated - but what happened to the final three cuts? They are so laden with noise reduction artifacts that they are barely listenable. And, I know the disc is short, but were the 2 second pauses between tracks REALLY necessary? Talk about choppy. No flow at all.

This CD did make me do one thing...go back into my archives and pull out my original Grand Prix vinyl. I think I'll be doing a transfer and retire this CD to the bottom shelf.

The late Gene Autry (a.k.a. the "Singing Cowboy" and the former owner of the Anaheim Angels) co-wrote the popular standard "Here Comes Santa Claus" in 1947. Over the next six years he seemed to keep reinventing it, if this 18-song collection of Autry's recorded Christmas music is any indication. There's "Santa, Santa, Santa," "He's A Chubby Little Fellow," and "I Wish My Mom Would Marry Santa Claus"--all variations on a theme (but what Christmas music isn't?). Still, for lovers of cowboy music and particularly Autry's amicable straight-forward vocal style, this is a respectable, unvarnished collection that also includes a duet with Rosemary Clooney ("The Night Before Christmas Song"), a number of tunes penned by Johnny Marks (including "Rudolph…"), and a couple of notable "Frosty the Snowman" themes. There's also a little ditty called "Sleigh Bells," co-inked by the Singing Cowboy six years after his success with "Here Comes Santa Claus," as proof that lightning does strike twice. --Martin Keller

    5 out of 5 stars nostalgia.......2007-01-12

My sister and I grew up in the era of Gene Autry. A few Christmases ago we were trying to sing "If it doesn't snow on Christmas. . . " and couldn't remember all the words. This album is so great. Full of lots of great songs for children. I bought one for myself and one for my sister. It's a great addition to my Christmas music collection.

4 out of 5 stars Back in the Sleigh-dle Again.......2005-01-06

Prolific. That was Gene Autry, it seems. His wife asked him to record "Rudolph", a promotional tune for the long-time but now-defunct Montgomery Ward department store. It went beyond a mere promo and ended up as a Christmas standard. Who knows how much money it's made. Gene could also write a tune now and then and not just "Ridin' Down the Canyon". He wrote some of these songs himself. It's worth having, believe me. And as for prolific, reviewer L. Bernabo (with the typo in his branding) couldn't tell you which song is the #3 most popular (after White Christmas and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer). Well, trust me, it's "The Christmas Song" written by the "Velvet Fog" Mel Torme and sung by Nat "King" Cole. It's been around like 50 years. You can find it easily enough. In the meantime, buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Christmas Classics from the Singing Cowboy himself.......2003-12-04

Everybody knows that the biggest Christmas hit of the first half of the 20th century was Bing Crosby's "White Christmas." Now, the question is whether you know that Gene Autry's recording of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" comes in second on that list (no idea what is third, sorry). The story is that Autry only recorded the song because his wife told him to. The singing cowboy had already had a major holiday hit with "Here Comes Santa Claus" and would have another with "Frosty the Snowman." Autry had a rather large catalogue of Christmas songs, as this collection amply proves. These songs were recorded in the late 1940s and early 1950s, and include some songs that I absolutely guarantee you have never heard before, such as the Autry originals "He's a Chubby Little Fellow" and "I Wish My Mom Would Marry Santa Claus." There is also a duet with Rosemary Clooney of "The Night Before Christmas (In Texas, That Is)"; the song comes in two parts because of the limitation on how much music you could get on one side of a single way back when (a time closer to Edison's wax discs than the CD).

This 2003 release adds a couple of tracks to the CBS "Christmas Favorites" album from a while back, and remasters the entire bunch. That does not exactly make these songs sound like they were recorded last week, but they do sound better and there is something totally appropriate about the old fashioned sound of these recordings that you do not really want them tampering with anyway. It is interesting to note that the most "traditional" song Autry does is the last track, "Up on the Rooftop"; most of these songs are about Santa Claus. You would think there would be something less secular, especially given we are talking about a major country western star, but that is not the case. Apparently that was the way things were a half-century ago. Just remember, this collection is nostalgia and not kitsch, even if these songs were recorded before you were born.

    5 out of 5 stars Christmas Classics.......2003-11-01

What a wonderful CD. All of these songs are classics. And the master of Christmas melodies performs them with his usual mellow voice. Christmas is not Christmas with out Rudolph. And the song "Where Did My Snowman Go?"....what a treasure. Rosemary Clooney and Gene's voices really blend well together on "The Night Before Christmas Song". This version of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" is wonderful. This CD is a must for anyone who loves Christmas music. Mr. Autry is in top form on all of these selections.

I loved this CD. I bought it because when my brother and I were little kids we always listened to a Gene Autry Christmas record while decorating the Christmas Tree. I just had to find a Gene Autry CD for me and my daughter to listen to while decorating ours.

4 out of 5 stars Happy Holidays, folks, wherever you may be!.......2004-12-18

This is a compilation of Christmas songs that Gene Autry recorded for his own record label after he left Columbia Records. Seven of the songs here are re-recordings of songs he previously recorded for Columbia. In most cases, they are not quite as good as the originals, but they are still very good. The arrangements are slightly different, and a few of them have commentaries by Gene before or after the songs. Notable original songs include the novelties "Buon Natale", "Nine Little Reindeer" and "Santa's Coming in a Whirlybird". The latter two feature Mel Blanc as the voice of Rudolph! And then there's the 13 minute long "The Story of the Nativity", which is Gene telling the story of the birth of Jesus to his "nephew". Sure, it's kind of corny, but I found it to be quite moving. While these recordings aren't as essential as Gene's Columbia recordings, they are still quite good and I would recommend this CD.

2 out of 5 stars NOT THE ORIGINALS BEWARE!!.......2002-11-18

I was very upset when this CD arrived. I was under the impression that these were the "original recordings" of Mr. Autry's Christmas records. They have been re-recorded and by no means are they bad.......their just NOT THE ORIGINALS! I want the original Columbia recordings. I gave it 2 stars because he does sound great....again just not the originals!

5 out of 5 stars "Gene Autry is Santa Claus 365 days a year".......2001-01-07

Gene Autry was responsible for keeping one of the world's greatest Christmas traditions alive the "Hollywood Christmas Parade", when bad times surfaced and needed some assistance financially...it was Gene who came to the rescue as Johnny Grant (Honary Mayor of Hollywood) did whatever it took to keep the parade the class-A Holiday event from going under...drawing approximatley one million spectators along the parade route each year, Hollywood's biggest single-day event and the kick off for the Holiday Season...this was all from Gene's generous support and giving spirit.

The year was 1946, on a Thanksgiving weekend and a Gene rode tall in the saddle, and Santa Claus was right around the bend, heard the children excited chants of "HERE COMES SANTA CLAUS"...and a song was born from Gene and co-written by Oakley Haldeman...recorded on August 28th, 1947 and became an instant hit. Then in 1949 songwriter Johnny Marks composed a tune from a poem - "RUDOLOPH, THE RED-NOSED REINDEER" many artist turned down the chance to record this classic, but Ina Autry, Gene's first wife loved the song and felt the children would love it too...she was right...and the rest my friends, is history.

By 1969 Gene's version of "RUDOLPH" had sold 6,500,000 copies and was the all-time top selling single for Columbia Records (the 1957 version, recorded for Gene's Challenge label, is included here)..."RUDOLPH" ranks as the second favorite Christmas song right behind Irving Berlin's "White Christmas".

Varese Sarabande and Gene share with fans old and new these popular Christmas songs recorded in the late '50s and early '60s...hope you enjoy them and they bring you wonderful memories with many happy returns from "America's Favorite Singing Cowboy" - GENE AUTRY!

        Album Description

Gene Autry is known as the Christmas Cowboy and this special digitally remastered Christmas collection was produced in conjunction with the Gene Autry Estate. This release is like no other Gene Autry Christmas collection. Not only does it contain every original Columbia Records Christmas song he recorded, but it also features in the eight-page booklet rare art from the original record releases, and new liner notes from Grammy-nominated, award-winning author Holly George-Warren (who is currently writing the first-ever comprehensive biography of Gene Autry). This is a must have collection for all fans who have enjoyed his Christmas classics for generations.

5 out of 5 stars Gene Autry The Complete Columbia Christmas Recordings.......2007-01-18

This has to be one of the best Christmas recordings ever made!!! Gene Autry's voice sounds great singing the Christmas classics. There are many songs on this recording that will appeal to the child in all of us. Two of my favorites are "If It Doesn't Snow on Christmas" and "He's a Chubby Little Fellow." This is definitely a must have for any Christmas music collection. I bought extras to give as gifts.

This is great!! I had been looking for one song for years 'Poppy The Puppy". A fond memory from childhood, my Aunt & Uncle had given me the album when I was little and somehow it got lost and now "Poppy" and I are reunited! Also the resto of the album is wonderful too.

5 out of 5 stars The Christmas Cowboy's complete Columbia Christmas catalog.......2005-12-26

The singing cowboy had already had a major holiday hit with "Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)" and would have another with "Frosty the Snowman" to cement his reputation as the Christmas Cowboy. Autry had a rather large catalogue of Christmas songs, as this collection amply proves. Autry recorded from the late 1930s to the mid-1950s and on this album I absolutely guarantee you will find some Christmas songs you have never ever heard before unless you were weaned on Autry's music, such as the Autry originals "He's a Chubby Little Fellow" and "I Wish My Mom Would Marry Santa Claus."

The "Complete Columbia Christmas Recordings" provides just what the title indicates: all 27 songs recorded by Autry for Columbia. That makes this the best Autry Christmas collection available by virtue of its completeness. Once you get past the three biggies pay attention to the other songs written by Johnny Marks, who wrote "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer," namely "If It Doesn't Snow on Christmas Day," "When Santa Claus Gets Your Letter," "The Night Before Christmas Song," and "Everyone's a Child at Christmas." Marks was almost as prolific a writer of Christmas songs as Autry was a singer of same, and as you can see not all of them are novelty songs. This is a perfect coupling of songwriter and singer, so pay special attention to these particular songs. Other than that the novelty songs certainly stand out, as amply proven by the immortal, "(Hard Rock, Coco and Joe) The Three Little Dwarfs" (they help Santa, in case you were wondering, Joe is a girl, and the song involves yodeling).

I also learned thatGene Autry was the first person to put pictures on a record sleeve to help sell his image and his music. No wonder the man ended up owning the Los Angeles Angels (who became the California Angels, Anaheim Angels and several other permutations thereof). The songs have all been remastered so that they sound great; you will probably forget that they were recorded a half-century ago because they simply do not sound that old fashioned any more. The collection tries to end on more of a spiritual note with "You Can See Old Santa Claus (When You Find Him in Your Heart)," but clearly Autry is a singer of secular Christmas songs. The "Complete Columbia Christmas Recordings" constitute nostalgia and not kitsch and if you want to recall when Christmas was a simpler time (and nobody complained about calling it Christmas), then listening to these songs might do the trick.

5 out of 5 stars The Christmas Cowboy.......2004-12-23

Gene Autry is the second most important recording artist of all time when it comes to Christmas music (Bing Crosby being #1, of course). He introduced three songs that went on to become Christmas standards ("Here Comes Santa Claus", "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and "Frosty the Snowman"). This CD collects every single one of the Christmas songs he recorded for Columbia Records. This is classic stuff. Almost all of these records are great, even the ones that nobody ever heard of. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who loves Christmas music.

5 out of 5 stars Gene Autry Is Great.......2004-12-14

In These songs I listen to them on cassete, From Up on the rooftop when Santa comes down the "Chimnley" To the santa claus is comin' to town with the horrible doll that says "MAMA". But all the songs are GREAT most of them I never even heard.

          5 out of 5 stars SLEIGH BELLS!!.......2003-11-21

          Sleigh bells jing-a-ling,
          Jing, jing, jing-a-ling
          Everything's all right,
          What happy sight,
          Santa's ridin' ol' sleigh bells
          Jing-a-ling,
          Christmas seems to glow,
          Holly and mistletoe
And the whitest kind of snow....

I was 7 years old when I got my first record player that Christmas and along with an album (vinyl) called Gene Autry - Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer. Sleigh bells played on side 2 and after the first listening, the essence of Christmas was so clear. After many years of playing the LP every Christmas, it became so scratchy and worn. You can hear the pops and crackles and it is just so gol-durn awful to listen to. I never could bring myself to part with it. I still have it after 40 years. The record cover is pretty worn and the label in the middle of the vinyl is streaked with markers. A reminder of my childhood.
Two years ago I was at a record store and I saw a CD titled Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and noticed that it had the song, Sleigh Bells! I bought this CD and what did I listen to first? SLEIGH BELLS!!! So clean and pristine. Tears of joy welled in my eyes...
My mom and dad have been gone for several years now, so every Christmas, I pull out this CD and listen to Sleigh Bells and immediately all memories from life and Christmases past comes hurling back. I'm not going to say anymore because I can't see what I'm typing....MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good for this genre of music.......2002-05-16

I liked this CD a great deal, but then I have a deep-seated fondness for cowboy music. I'm not sure why. My only criticism of these songs is that most of them begin with a verbal bit of storytelling, that, although charming, gets a little redundant. I think I may make a copy of this CD and edit the vocals off the beginning of each song, then I can enjoy the pure, simple cowboy christmas music I like.

5 out of 5 stars NEXT GENERATION OF FANS.......2000-04-27

THIS CD IS FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES. HE WAS THE BEST AT WHAT HE DID. I LISTENED TO THESE SONGS AS A TEENAGER, BECAUSE MY DAD HAD THEM ON TAPE. NOW I LISTEN TO THIS CD BECAUSE I LOVE IT. IF YOUR CHILDREN LISTEN TO IT THEY WILL LOVE IT TO AND A NEW GENERATION OF FANS WILL BE BORN. SO LET THEM LISTEN TO THE CHRISTMAS CD BY GENE AUTRY AND FIND WHAT A GREAT ENTERTAINER THEY HAD BACK IN THE 30'S, 40'S, 50'S AND 60'S. CHRISTMAS AT IT'S BEST!

5 out of 5 stars Blast From the Past.......1999-11-28

Oh my gosh! This brings back memories. Gene's smooth voice and joyful tunes perfectly complement a winter's night. You can just taste the eggnog and smell the pine needles as he croons Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. If you love classic Christmas music, get this CD. It doesn't matter if you like country. This transcends genres!
