5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-01-20

If you enjoy the beautiful, unique, and lyrical voice of Mac Wiesman you will enjoy this cd. It had so many of our favorites. The quality of the recordings is also very good. It is currently one of our favorites.

4 out of 5 stars A classic Mac Wiseman album from 1966 (with country band).......2007-01-02

Playing Time - 40:55 -- With over 50 years in business, Rural Rhythm Records has built a catalog that connects many dots from past to present. Since its 1955 creation, Rural Rhythm has released hundreds of classic performances by many legendary bluegrass and old-time musicians such as J.E. Mainer, Don Reno, Red Smiley, Mac Wiseman, Vassar Clements, Hylo Brown, Bill Harrell, Jim Eanes, and many others. This album is part of that archival catalog. The label owes its Arcadia, California start to Uncle Jim O'Neal whose vision was to release the music of many top bluegrass and old-time musicians in the 1950-70s, seeking success where Starday had failed by producing records of limited appeal by lesser known, albeit talented, musicians.

Mac Wiseman was born on May 23, 1925. He hails from Crimora, Virginia but lives on Percy Priest Lake, near Nashville. He was born in 1925, the same year the Grand Ole Opry started. In 1944, Mac began his career as a DJ in in Harrisonburg, Virginia. In 1946, he worked with Molly O'Day, then in 1948 an original member of Flatt and Scruggs' Foggy Mountain Boys, and then in 1949 with Bill Monroe. From 1952-1956, Mac with his band "The Country Boys" recorded several hits for Dot Records including "Jimmy Brown the Newsboy," "Love Letters in the Sand," "The Ballad of Davy Crockett." From 1957-1963, he was an A & R man (Artists and Repertoire) for Dot Records and ran the company's country-music department. While at Dot, he was instrumental in the success of Pat Boone's career. It was Mac who suggested that Pat record the song "Love Letters in the Sand" which became a smash hit for the young singer. In 1958, Mac one of the founders of the Country Music Association (CMA) and its first secretary. In 1965, he performed at the first bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Virginia. In 1966, Mac managed WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling, West Virginia. That was the year that he recorded this album for Uncle Jim's Rural Rhythm Records. He was in fine country voice for songs that also include some uncredited accompaniment with drums, jew's harp, Dobro, harmonica, autoharp, electric bass, and others.

In more recent time, Mac's kept busy with music. In 1990, he was elected president of R.O.P.E. (Reunion of Professional Entertainers) in Nashville. One of the goals of the organization is to build a retirement home for country music entertainers. In 1991, he worked at the revived Old Dominion Barn Dance, Richmond, Virginia.
In 1992, he worked at the Willie Nelson Theatre in Branson, Missouri. In 1993, Mac was inducted into the IBMA's Hall of Honor. In 1997, he recorded with "The Groove Grass Boyz." In 2001, Wiseman recorded a duet with his old friend Johnny Cash: "When It's Reveille Time in Heaven."

Songcarriers and musicologists would be particularly interested in this type of archival material. Don't expect to hear vocal harmonies, elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic country sound of yesteryear. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars If you buy only one country recording, buy this one!.......1999-08-29

I First heard Mac Wiseman when I was Eight years old (It was this very recording that I heard, on an old 8-track tape), and from that moment, I was hooked. I'm 15 now, but enough about me. This is a great album! Mac Wiseman has a warm tenor voice that cannot be equaled, even by the great opera tenors. Plus this album has some great country favorites such as I SAW YOUR FACE IN THE MOON, ROVING GAMBLER, MIDNIGHT SPECIAL, WRECK OF THE OLD '97, and others. This CD is a MUST for any True country fan!

5 out of 5 stars One of bluegrass music's most tasteful & soulful low-key baritone voices.......2007-01-02

Playing Time - 38:37 -- With over 50 years in business, Rural Rhythm Records has built a catalog that connects many dots from past to present. Early ads for records released by Uncle Jim O'Neal stated that the LPs sold for only $3.50 apiece. The self-professed "Little Cotton Picker," O'Neal also took an approach of releasing 20 songs on each 33 1/3 RPM album. These would have been great bargains in the mid-1960s when major label monaural records (with only about a dozen songs) were selling for $3.98 and stereophonic records were $4.98.

Guitarist/vocalist Frank "Hylo" Brown was a star on Capitol Records in the 1950s, before joining Flatt & Scruggs' show. To stay financially secure, Brown had transitioned his music into both bluegrass and country. He did seven albums for Rural Rhythm (as well as a session for Vetco, and a gospel album on the Newland label). I would say that his "Hylo Brown and the Timberliners" (RR-168) and "Country Gospel Songs" (RR-187) were among his very best records, while his later releases for Rural Rhythm ("Sings the Blues" RR-200 and "America's Favorite Balladeer" RR-204) experienced some problems with either extreme brevity of the selections, or lack of arrangement. After Hylo parted company with Rural Rhythm, he became increasingly inactive until his death in 2003 stilled one of bluegrass music's most tasteful and soulful low-key baritone voices. Roy Ross and his Blue Ridge Mountain Boys' record (RR-207) was an unqualified success for its polished music, varied arrangements and close harmony reminiscent of Jim & Jesse. Although considered just an Ohio "local" band, they also backed Hylo Brown on three of his albums for Uncle Jim O'Neal.

Produced by Lee Sutton (also a visionary who helped Uncle Jim capture the music), "20 Gospel Favorites" was originally entitled "Country Gospel Songs" when it was put out in 1967. Accompanying Hylo are Jack Casey (lead guitar), Dan Milhon (Dobro), Ross Branhan (banjo), Dick Brickles (bass), and John Maultbay (fiddle). It's unclear who sings harmonies on songs like "Workin' on a Building." Liner notes are provided by Barry Willis, author of "America's Music: Bluegrass."

Songcarriers and musicologists would be particularly interested in this type of archival material. It's an immeasurably wealthy body of familiar and not-so-familiar tunes, many of which are still played today by bands on stage and bluegrass musicians in jam sessions. Don't expect to hear elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic bluegrass sound of yesteryear. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Playing Time - 40:17 -- With over 50 years in business, Rural Rhythm Records has built a catalog that connects many dots from past to present. Virginia-born mandolinist Earl Taylor worked with Jimmy Martin, Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs and many others during a long career dating back to the 1940s. Earl Taylor formed the Stoney Mountain Boys about 1958. They were the first bluegrass band to perform at New York's Carnegie Hall (1959) as part of the "Folksong '59" show promoted by Alan Lomax. In 1964, Earl recorded an album "Blue Grass Taylor-made" on Capitol Records with his new band, "The Blue Grass Mountaineers."

Earl joined up with guitarist Jim McCall, and their Rural Rhythm releases should be required listening. Originally released in 1967, this album (produced by Lou Ukelson) illustrates the consistently high quality music that this band was producing. Volumes 2 & 3 (RR-242 and 243) were put out in 1971. The band subsequently went onto the Vetco label and put out "The Bluegrass Touch" (Vetco-3017) in 1974 and "Body and Soul" (Vetco-3026) in 1977.

On "20 Bluegrass Favorites," Earl (lead vocals, mandolin) and Jim (vocals, guitar) are accompanied by Tim Spradlin (banjo) and Charles Haskins (bass). Songcarriers and musicologists would be particularly interested in this type of archival material. It's an immeasurably wealthy body of familiar tunes, all of which are still played today by bands on stage and bluegrass musicians in jam sessions. Don't expect to hear 3- or 4-part vocal harmonies, elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic bluegrass sound of yesteryear. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

4 out of 5 stars More Earl Taylor!.......2003-08-20

This is a solid bluegrass disk with great banjo pickin' and soulful vocals. Its 'ol timey charm is great in the workshop or out on the lawn. I only wish more of the old Earl Taylor vinyl would be released to disk (especially Folksongs From The Bluegrass).

With over 50 years in business, Rural Rhythm Records has built a catalog that connects many dots from past to present.

Producer Lee Sutton was the visionary who captured the music of the legendary J.E. Mainer, an "unabashed, unreconstructed, unapologetic old-time musician," according to one of Richard Spottswood's reviews in an early issue of Bluegrass Unlimited magazine. Although he had recorded earlier, Mainer's output had dropped off in the 50s and early-60s. Beginning in 1967, twenty volumes of his music were released over the course of just a few years. In Rural Rhythm's extensive J.E. Mainer archive, Volume 20 (RR-250) has material drawn from his earlier albums, but they also included alternate takes and were put out in stereo. They also had his down-home fiddling, and his singing and banjo work impart more good-time hilarity than anyone since Uncle Dave Macon. We sincerely appreciate the legacy that Uncle Jim, producer Lee Sutton, and musician J. E. Mainer have left us. Uncle Jim had the foresight to realize he was recording an important old-time musician whose years were limited and whose musicianship was intact. An immeasurably wealthy body of familiar and not so familiar tunes.

Mainer's earlier releases were unquestionably his best. He sang and played fiddle. He worked with many of the same personnel who had recorded on King and Arhoolie. Sound quality was good. Later, quantity seemed to become the main goal although all of the sessions produced some good music. Others who worked with J.E. included Earl Cheek (bass), Jerry Cheek washboard), Bill Deaton (guitar), Danny Milhon (Dobro), and Morris Herbert (banjo, vocals) who eventually came to be featured more than J.E. on the later albums. J.E. Mainer died in June, 1971 before a scheduled appearance at a festival in Culpepper, Va.

THE GRANDFATHER FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF MY FAMILY WAS A BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN BOY. THEY ARE FROM SOUTHERN OHIO. ROY ROSS (MANDOLIN), RECENTLY DECEASED, PLAYED ON THIS ALBUM. HE HAS A GREAT STYLE SIMILAR TO JESSE MCREYNOLDS. HYLO IS DOING OK ALTHOUGH HE HAS TO WALK WITH CAIN BECAUSE OF A RECENT BRAIN STROKE...

The label owes its Arcadia, California start to Uncle Jim O'Neal. whose vision was to release the music of many top bluegrass and old-time musicians in the 1950-70s, seeking success where Starday had failed by producing records of limited appeal by lesser known, albeit talented, musicians. Produced by Mac Wiseman and Lee Sutton (the same visionary who captured the music of the legendary J.E. Mainer), this album captured the high quality work of Reno & Harrell and their band released originally in 1967 (Rural Rhythm LP# RR-171).

Guitarist Bill Harrell played and sang with banjo-player Don Reno for over a dozen years, and Don Reno kept the Tennessee Cut-ups together until his death in 1984. "20 Bluegrass Favorites" is a great introduction to his band's music that was very well received at the time. Don't expect elaborate arrangements or clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic bluegrass sound of yesteryear. Don Reno's banjo break on "Footprints in the Snow" is worth the budget price of this album alone. There's in fiddle in the mix, and the choruses are just sung as duos. While Ronnie Reno plays mandolin, there aren't many breaks from him here. George Shuffler plays bass. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice Early Vassar!!.......2003-04-04

Any fan of Vassar Clements who studies his work will LOVE this CD! Don't expect any of the Hillbilly Jazz influence here, this is a studio production started in 1969 running through 1972. Vassar was working as studio musician so this band is tight! The cuts are not the free flowing form developed in the mid 70's, but standard cuts, probably made to be played commercially if a DJ liked the tunes. During the time this was produced, Vassar was stretching his limts playing with the likes of John Hartford, Norman Blake and Tut Taylor. Here is Vassar just before he ventured out with the Vassar Clements Band and "electrified" fiddle. Its a good study of an excellent fiddle player any lover of real fiddle music should have.

    1 out of 5 stars Not Vassar's best, by a long shot.......2000-09-08

Sorry to say this, but if you're a fan of Vassar Clements from his playing with Old and In the Way, or the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, or his own jazzy/swing excursions, you may not like this too much.

Vassar plays over a very cheesy country backup band, with steel guitar, electric bass and drums. I personally was not able to listen to more than a few tunes, and I am a big Vassar fan.

    Buyer beware...

Produced by Lee Sutton (the same visionary who captured the music of the legendary J.E. Mainer), this album captured some of the consistently high quality work of Red Smiley and his band.

Prior to fronting the Bluegrass Cut-Ups, Red Smiley was with Don Reno, one of the of the pioneering first-generation bluegrass bands, very popular and influential throughout the 50s and 60s, but never as commercially successful as Flatt and Scruggs or Bill Monroe. Red Smiley brought his new group, the Bluegrass Cutups, to Rural Rhythm, with Tater Tate in Reno's place. Tater had already worked a spell with Bill Monroe before joining Red in 1965. Fans of traditional bluegrass could hardly go wrong with Red Smiley and the Bluegrass Cutups' original clear and sparkling albums (RR-160, 182, 211) that included hymns, instrumentals, novelty, bluegrass and even a few old pop songs, all handled with grace. This CD is a reissue of #182. Although not in stereo when originally released, RR-211 was showcased as "a model for all small-label productions." As part of Rural Rhythm's archive, Uncle Jim O'Neal liked to offer 20 tracks on the LPs originally issued. For CD, the music's been remastered by Ran Ballard. Liner notes are included from Barry Willis, author of "America's Music: Bluegrass."

"20 Bluegrass Favorites, Volume II" is a great introduction to his band's music that was very well received (and quite eclectic) for the time. Don't expect elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic bluegrass sound of yesteryear. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. Just enjoy and relive a classic bluegrass sound of yesteryear. Red's health forced him into retirement in the late-60s. He was a warm and affable individual with a great personality. Smiley died on Jan. 2, 1972. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
