2 out of 5 stars Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

What Neko Case lacks in polish and subtlety, she more than makes up for with urgency, authority, and plain, old spunk. Her irresistible originals blend twangy hooks, direct lyrics, and an implied, rather than explicit edge. Stark, brooding weepers such as "Jettison" and "Lonely Old Lies" accompany the perky country-pop of "High on Cruel" and the mysterious anti- gospel of the title track. She adds these originals to covers that range from the Everly Brothers, Ernest Tubb, and Loretta Lynn to Scott Walker and Queen. All the while, steel guitars and mandolins softly accent the proceedings. Much of what's dubbed alternative country is simply alt-rock with country instruments or country music played at high decibels. Case & Her Boyfriends actually create a true fusion of styles. --Marc Greilsamer

Album Description

Neko Case's solo debut is a delightful collection of heartfelt originals and vibrant covers ranging from traditional country fare (Ernest Tubb's "Thanks a Lot," Loretta Lynn's "Somebody Led Me Away") to more eclectic material (Scott Walker's "Duchess"). The highlight is a rip-snorting rendition of the Everly Brothers' "Bowling Green," a duet with Zumpano's Carl Newman. Bloodshot Records. 1998.

5 out of 5 stars Another Solid Effort.......2007-06-12

What can I say? I'm just amazed at how consistent her CDs are, and how often they end up in the player. Before a second cut is finished playing, I've plugged in a Tele and I'm playing along. Pick anything from her catalog and you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars THE WHISKEY DID THE REST.......2006-12-13

Okay...I just can't do it. I thought I could write this review without referencing her but I can't. So, let's get it out of the way. She's no Patsy Cline. No one ever will be, but with Neko it's hard not to conjure up thoughts of a 21st Century Patsy. In Patsy's wake we've been blessed to hear some sublime voices that would not have been possible had Miss Cline not kicked open the door for them. Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris, Maria McKee...and now Neko Case. All unique. All powerful. All capable of devastating, raw emotional impact & rousing roof-raising joy. All due respect to Patsy.

Now once we get beyond unfair comparisons, Neko becomes her own strange, beautiful animal. THE VIRGINIAN is one of the most exhilarating mission statements I've ever heard. It's rewards are rich and many.

She starts off the album with "Timber". Is it a warning? Maybe. She makes the Everly Brothers her bitch on "Bowling Green". "Jettison" is as sparkling, and emancipated as a song about suicide can be. The next two songs are so ferocious & rollicking that Metallica might want to start taking notes. "High On Cruel" is aptly titled and once you hear her immaculate, seductive vocals I defy you to not wish to be the lover under her stilletos. "Karoline" rocks even harder. The band ratcheting up the tension until the live-wire snaps on Matt Murphy's brilliant "Honky Tonk Hiccups". On which Neko outdoes herself in terms of phrasing. That is until you reach a poignant, crushing rendition of "Duchess". She gives Earl Scruggs a loving pat on the back with "Thanks A Lot"...she is led away from a bloody idiot in the next song...and finally confounds expectations with a Queen song to close out the album.

It's a wildly fun ride. You'll take it over and over again. Neko Case is one of those rare artistic gifts. Her every move will be a pleasure to witness.

If you need convincing...start with this album. You can thank me later.

4 out of 5 stars Over analyzing it.......2006-05-12

Don't listen to these people comparing this to the album they bought last week. This was a good album when it came out and it is still a good album. Let them keep repeating this country-noir nonsense because they heard some reviewer say it. These reviews are full of repeated nonsense that people read in Spin or Rolling Stone.

5 out of 5 stars Nuevo Honky Tonk.......2006-01-06

Quite possibly the best album every made. I write this 'review' in response (or retort, rather) to the opening line of the amazon.com official review, which starts with, "what Neko lacks..." - HORRIBLE! Allow me to retort. Miss Neko lacks nothing (except a husband last I checked and she can call me if she is reading this). Simply the greatest nuevo honky tonk voice on the planet. This debut album (yeah, it's still called an 'album' even if you buy it on CD) is and always will be, in my humble opinion, a classic slab of the meanest, most sincere and well played music you will find. Words lack the power to convey my love of this women's (WOMEN, not little girl with a record contract) voice. I prefer this freshmen release on Mint Records (the equally talentuous Carolyn Mark's homebase) over later albums precisely for the ubertwang feel. I will not give you a song by song kitchy Rolling Stone styled review, I don't do that and I don't like people that do. Listen to the entire album, that is what records like this were made for. I love the mando and peddlesteel playing, and the album is recorded in an anachronistic, open and airy style - NOT like cheap imitation, polished records which don't hold a candle. I could go on - just get it and listen repeatedly.

4 out of 5 stars Not a great album, but some great performances.......2004-12-01

Those who are into Neko for her "country noir" music will probably be disappointed by her debut album, "The Virginian." Released a good seven years ago, it's pretty straightforward country/rockabilly--and for that reason I find myself playing it a lot more than "Blacklisted." No, it's not the best album ever, but "Bowling Green" surpasses the Everlys' version, "Misfire" is an inspired Queen cover, and "Honky Tonk Hiccups" is a great little original. Well worth picking up if you liked the more uptempo stuff on "The Tigers Have Spoken."

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

5 out of 5 stars Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11

I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

An American Mosiaic is a delight for both the sophistocated and unsophistocated ear. The music created by these professional musicians (harpist anf flutist) brings warmth, relaxation and joy into one's life. The variety in this "mosaic" or collection keeps one's interest. Also, the pieces have historical significance in the music world. How fortunate for us these talented women decided bring to into our lives beautiful music that would otherwise be overlooked.

4 out of 5 stars One More Great Percy Faith Twofer by Collectables.......2006-02-12

Two big qualities distinguish the late Percy Faith.

First of all he was an original arranger with all those strings combined as if in a brass section in a unique sound. Second of all, he was a staff arranger for Columbia Records what gave him the opportunity to work on memorable albums by Johnny Mathis and other singers.

This twofer shows two different approaches: the first 12 takes came from his splendid album 'The Love Godessess' full of Mr. Faith's own compositions for films and TV series like 'The Virginian'. They're such inspired songs like the title song and 'Celia's Waltz'.

The second 12 takes came from another album with a miscellaneous movie soundtrack repertoire. They're such great songs by great composers but Mr. Faith's arrangements do not add any special flavor to the originals.

A special note on Collectables Records regarding its extraordinary series of twofers which have finally issued virtually all Percy Faith material.

5 out of 5 stars "Miklos Rozsa epic film scores ~ Percy Faith".......2003-07-04

Every week I would go to the downtown library and check out the latest albums (LP's) ~ my eyes would always look for the Percy Faith releases. One of my favorites was "The Love Goddesses", featuring compositions by Maestro Faith, something about his string arrangements drew me to this album. At that time I had a reel-to-reel recorder/player and cassette recorder, would tape every album by Mr. Faith I could get my hands on. Later I would go to Webster Records the local record store in Old Webster, Mo. and purchase his latest releases.

Entire album is a stand out, but here are some of the highlights ~ "MARILYN", beautiful haunting melody as strings and counter strings open, blending a harp that keeps reoccurring in your head ~ "THE VAMP", solo clarinet with plunking violins, enters the solo violin and full strings answer, simply beautiful ~ "OUR LOVE", is typical Percy Faith with an arrangement to die for ~ "CELIA'S WALTZ", a solo saxophone comes forward with counterpoints from Faith's famous string section, the melody gets under your skin and becomes intoxicating ~ "OBA! (BOSSA NOVA)", what is a Percy Faith album without Latin flavor, and this is what he does best.

Second half of the album is "Hollywood's Great Themes", opening with "EL CID(LOVE THEME), "THEME FROM KING OF KINGS" and "BEN HUR(LOVE THEME)" the legendary Miklos Rozsa could do no wrong when it came to epic films, Faith's brilliant arrangement puts the listener right up there on the big screen ~ "MARIA", the wonderful song from "West Side Story" that will go one forever ~ "THEME FROM LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA", a heart-wrenching film with a light floating melody that lingers on, just take a listen to Faith's strings in top form ~ what a classic arrangement from the git-go!

      Total Time: 72:52 on 24 Tracks ~ Collectables 7478 ~ (3/19/2002)

3 out of 5 stars Uneven outing for Faith.......2002-05-20

This twofer, with over 70 minutes of music, provides a showcase for Faith-penned tunes and some lesser known hits from Hollywood. The Love Goddess finds the Faith arrangements full of his trademark strings, but several hits are distinctive in that Faith employs the brassiness of a big band sound, especially on Cheesecake. Keystone Kapers, with whistles and bells, is forgetful, but other selections are an easy listen. Hollywood's Great Themes contains selections that certainly would not make anyone's list of great themes from Hollywood. Would you pick the love theme from Ben Hur, or the theme from Light in the Piazza, or how about Over and Over Again from Jumbo? The only real Hollywood classic here is Moon River, though Faith does add a smattering of Richard Rodgers, with Hart and Hammerstein.

      4 out of 5 stars Love Goddesses/Hollywoods Great Themes.......2002-03-23

The Love Goddesses from 1964 is a fairely good album by Faith and oneI'm glad to add to my collection. This album is more jazzeier than a lot of Faith's other albums. Some songs are very lush such as Marilyn Our Love,The Monoco Theme,The Love Goddess,Chico Bolero, and Celia's Waltz. The other songs on this album are upbeat with incarnations of jazz especially Cheesecake.Oba is a bossa nova and is pretty good. All songs from the Love Goddesses album was written by Percy Faith himself.Hollywood's Great Themes from 1962 is movie themes and some are very good. This album features light strings with the exception of the last two Theme From The Four Horseman Of The Apocalypse and Theme From Light In The Plazza These two have heavy strings. My favorite is Splendor In The Grass. This album was only available on cassette several years ago beforecollectibles, taragon, good music and ranwood came along with Faith reissiues.Back then only 4 albums were out by Faith and 2 cassettes this one and Deep Purple which were hard to find than.Liner Notes are included for the Love Goddesses but are not included for Hollywoods Great Themes.Another great 2 on 1 album with 2 great albums by Faith.

        4 out of 5 stars good debut....err..."Honky Tonk Hiccups?".......2005-09-19

anyone who knows me, knows that i LOOOOOOVE Neko Case. she is one of the most talented voices emerging from modern music. in an age of sterile lifeless junk, her style rises above the mediocre crap. all of her albums are most certainly worth buying and cherishing. her music will comfort you. this is her first album as a solo artist, and it's heavy on the covers, but it's a good listen. the title track and the Earnest Tubbs' cover of "Thanks A Lot" are both worth the price of admission alone. but the one track that will make you think twice would be "Honky Tonk Hiccups." yes...you read that correctly. it is not a funny song...it's a silly song. very silly. and at times i feel myself singing it in my head because it's so catchy...and it drives me absolutely crazy! watch out. this is a fun little album, but not an essential place to start if you are curious about little miss Neko. start with the "Furnace Room Lullabye" album. no hiccups on that one.

4 out of 5 stars Not a great album, but some great performances.......2004-12-02

5 out of 5 stars Patsy Kline on steroids with post modern sex appeal.......2003-10-28

Being a fan of the grass roots resurgence, I think this album is a piece of history that any true music lover would have to cherish. Vibrant, alive, smart, and sassy, this exploration of blue grass country is nostalgic yet reinventive. On some songs, Miss Case's voice echoes the torture of an angel torn from the very womb of heaven. On others, her light-hearted melodrama beams through but always with the crisp, perfect voice that has become her trademark.

        5 out of 5 stars Powerful debut.......2000-07-11

Neko's got the voice and the motley band rocks on some choice covers and originals. Fans of Maria McKee and Wanda Jackson will dig this roots rocking disc.
