5 out of 5 stars nostalgic memories.......2007-03-20

This is an excellent collection of music offering nostalgic memories of forgotten one hit wonders as well as many more enduring artists. The music is well chosen. It is fun to play this at parties attended by those of us in our sixties and see who can name the artists.

4 out of 5 stars Golden Era of Rock.......2007-01-09

There was only one track of interest since all of the others were previously acquired. The track desired was needed to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best colections you will ever find.......2005-10-20

This is for people who love the Rock and Roll of the 50's and Early 60's.
This is not some collection made in someones garage with sub-par recordings, infact it is just the opposite.
All songs are by the original performers and the sound quality is suberb. The songs appear to be remastered and sound like they were recorded yesterday.
You get all the Rock and Roll artists along with the Do-wap artists like the Platters, The Skyliners.
Personally I am not a huge fan of music from the 50's, but this is where I go when I want to hear something from that era.
All of the classics are on here, Bill Haley, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Eddie Cochoran, Ray Charles and the list just goes on and on.............Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars For those smart enough NOT to buy American Graffiti OST .......2005-06-22

This compilation has nearly all the tracks from American Graffiti's soundtrack, and so much more. This is exactly what I've been looking to fit my eclectic taste. All the hits are here, this side of Great Balls of Fire and Willie and the Hand Jive. Those two would have made this compilation perfect, but perfection is hard to come by when dealing with era compilations.

I wasn't around back when these songs were blasting on the radio, but I grew up listening to this music - thanks, mom! If you want to experience the sound of this era, this three-set cd collection is perfect. I've been looking for Maybellene, Be-Bop-A-Lula, Peggy Sue, Sea Cruise and Blue Suede Shoes and they're all here on the same set!

Try ebay before you buy here. I found this set relatively cheap over there. There were about five sellers when I bought mine, all vying for the lowest price.

This is great road music for those of you in my generation brave enough to try something new and break away from the Death Cab for Cutie/Outkast conformity we hear all the time on mainstream radio.

For those of you who grew up on this stuff, please let me reintroduce you to your old friends. This cd has almost all of them.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly, a First Class 3CD Set from Rock's "Golden Era".......2004-11-28

Compiled to celebrate rock and roll's 50th anniversary this year, this Hip-O three-disc, 62 song set features some of the best sound treatment these evergreens have received in the CD era. Gavin Lurssen's exceptional remastering allows you to clearly hear the Coasters' bass-tenor harmony-comedy in 1958's "Yakety Yak" and the Cadets' in 1956's still-weird operetta "Stranded in the Jungle." You hear the rollicking piano behind the guitar solo in Wilbert Harrison's "Kansas City," and the twangy guitar intros to Richie Valens and the Everly Brothers' (not to mention original twangy guitar Duane Eddy's) signature songs.

And signature songs, one from each artist, is all executive producer Andy MacKaie's team seemed to have room for in this expansive collection. One song each from titans like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Rick Nelson and Buddy Holly. In most cases he safely relied on their first hits ("Maybelline," "Tutti Fruitti") but also allowed hints of the 1960s producer-dominated era in tracks from the Four Seasons and Beach Boys. Hearing "Rock Around the Clock" and "Tequila" again recalls how popular these songs remained in films and television more than three decades after first charting.

Despite Billy Altman's pedantic liner notes, the set deserves five stars for the sheer number and quality of hits present (more than 30 #1 hits and more than enough songs associated with the era.) Too many artists are missing for "The Golden Era" to be definitive: no Elvis, nothing from the Cameo-Parkway or Phil Spector eras, a curious Sam Cooke track. But this collection is a worthwhile introduction or summary of rock and roll's first 10 years, an era fading from oldies station playlists and for today's senior citizens (teenagers when Elvis hit in 1954) becoming the anachronism the big bands were to a previous generation. Essential music, worthwhile here but more so in individual anthologies from Berry, Holly, and others.

5 out of 5 stars Marilyn Horne scintillates.......2007-05-20

This 2-CD set includes 32 separate "cuts." Thus, it provides a perspective on the broad range of works that Marilyn Horne mastered. While some pockets of work may be given somewhat short shrift (e.g., Rossini), overall this shows off her skills nicely. Born in Bradford, Pennsylvania (one of the coldest places in the nation during winter), she made her operatic debut in 1954. In liner notes copyrighted in 2003, she notes that: "Can't believe it's time for a 70th birthday celebration. . . ." And neither can I, since I recall hearing her perform at the Met (via the old Texaco opera show), and it does not seem all that long ago!

Some cuts well depict her artistry across a range of genres and composers.

The "Habanera" from Bizet's "Carmen" is, to be sure, an old chestnut by now, but she sings it with a rich and lustrous voice. She sings a seductive aria seductively.

"Eccomi al fine in Babilonia" is from Rossini's "Semiramide" and shows off her skills nicely. This piece shows off the range of her voice well. Her voice is very agile, as it would need to be to do Rossini justice. There are some nice runs; the cabaletta showcases her agility and allows her to display well sung ornamentation.

From Handel's "Semele," we hear "Hence, Iris, Hence Away." This is a sprightly piece that is characteristically well sung by Horne.

Handel's "Rosalinda" features a nice work for mezzos, "Dove sei amato bene?" If I hear correctly, Horne begins this with a trill in piano; there are a number of nicely executed trills in this work. This cut is smoothly and richly sung throughout.

"Addio, addio o miei sospiri" comes from "Orfeo ed Oridice" by Gluck. A sprightly paced work. Horne shows off excellent ornamentation; her coloratura technique is terrific.

From "Norma" (by Bellini) there are 4 cuts (from a longer scene), featuring collaboration with Joan Sutherland. The two singers worked well together in a number of operas, and this set of works illustrates that synergy beautifully. "Mi chiami, o Norma!" starts things off. The two voices meld extremely well together. "Deh! Con te, con te li prendi" features fine work all around. Both singers display good vocal dexterity. Horne hits one high note with a bit of harshness, but not an issue of any moment. "Mira, o Norma" is ravishing; Sutherland's and Horne's duet is absolutely wonderful. Finally, "Si, fino all'ore estreme." This is a fast paced duet, with both singers manifesting considerable vocal agility and sound coloratura technique. When they sing together, their voices almost sound "twinned."

Finally, "Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair." Horne sings this straight, without the ghastly "opera-tizing" that some singers cannot resist. Sung simply and powerfully. Her rich voice produces a very good vocal effect.

And so on.

Although this CD does not fully represent her repertoire, it does provide a good sense of the art of Marilyn Horne and it suggests the range of her singing. For those wanting to get a sense of Horne's oeuvre, this is one recording that provides entrée to her body of work.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest Voices of All!.......2006-01-29

I am not the only one who regards Marilyn Horne's voice as exceptional. During the seventies and eighties she was regarded by The New York Times Music Critic as possessing the greatest voice of our time. One only has to sample this "golden" collection to prove how right he was. Her "mezzo" handles Handel and Rossini like no other. Brava all the way (To say nothing about Dalila's famous aria!) And I must even mention her "Jeannie With the Light Brown Hair". This is a two CD that is a MUST for those who appreciate the glories of the human voice (To say nothing about the warmth and spirit than accompany it.)

5 out of 5 stars Not 100% satisfied with the selections, but what artistry!.......2004-11-03

Decca's release of this career-spanning Marilyn Horne recital contains many "golden" nuggets, but isn't the absolute best representation of her artistry, in my opinion.

There was certainly plenty of material to choose from, as Horne was one of the most recorded mezzos in the twentieth century. As advertised, Madame Horne personally approved the final recital list, and the diva undoubtedly has sentimental attachment to certain selections. Furthermore, a conscious attempt was made to represent the different genres explored during her decades-spanning career. This approach, however, leaves out some truly stunning material that would have made an even stronger case on why she was such an operatic institution.

In summary:

The first disc begins with the Habanera from Carmen. Horne was very proud of her Carmen, noting that it surpassed sales of Callas's Tosca at one point. It deserved to be included, but I don't think she was "THE" Carmen, and besides, the whole opera is so warmed-over by now, it's hard to get anyone excited about it!

From then on, we are treated to a bonanza of wonderful arie and scena. The aria from Samson et Delilah is a real gem. Horne was certainly not the most glamorous singer, but My God, the interpretation is heavenly. This is what the aria sounds like in the hands of a world-class contralto. Eccomi in Babilonia follows, and by anyone's measurement, she is the finest Arsace on record. Blessed with an extraordinary range, she is as fulminating in both the top and bottom registers. What's more, her spirited delivery magnifies the pure genius of Rossini's music. As for Cruda Sorte, "ditto," as Marilyn herself might say.

Next, we are treated to two excellent Handel arias. Iris, Hence Away gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it. This was recorded in the early sixties, for inclusion in the Age of Bel Canto recital she shared with Joan Sutherland and Richard Conrad. Now, if she had recorded this a few years later, she might have drove the coloratura harder. However, at this point, the voice had a somewhat lighter quality, thus the aria isn't sung with that all-purpose "Marilyn Horne" voice we are so used to. Speaking of lightness, Dove Sei, Amato Bene will send shivers down your spine. Again, Marilyn wasn't known for her subtlety, but she proves here that she was more than capable. Just listen to the fluttering trills and fil di voce, and dare to disagree with me! One of my major complaints is it there isn't more Handel on the recital. Sure, a whole recital of Handel arias by Horne is still available, but in this best-of disc, there was room at least for Or La Tromba, the trumpet aria from Rinaldo, and a personal favorite. Also, nothing is included from Vivaldi's Orlando Il Furioso, another travesty.

The pinnacle of the first disc is Addio, I Miei Sospiri, from Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice. This is Horne magified to the nth power. Where to start? A scrumptiously sung recitativo, then the aria itself, with Marilyn pulling out all the stops. The bronzed tone, perfect breath control, spectacular coloratura fireworks, superlative diction, evenness and security from top to bottom, and Marilyn's own way of generating excitement will floor you. This is bravura singing at the highest level.

After a few other selections from the French reperetoire, the disc closes with two Rossini warhorses. Again, the "ultimate" Horne best-of would have saved room for more Rossini, on the second disc. But the evidence here is ample enough to proclaim her honorific as the leading interpreter of Rossini in the last century.

The second disc is less satisfactory. The first selection, Superbo Di Me Stesso sounds like it came from an inferior source, and wasn't remastered properly. Il Segreto Per Esser Felici, from Lucrezia Borgia is fine enough, but Marilyn could have ornamented more, and that snare drum is too loud! Then, we have an extended scene from Il Trovatore. Now, Marilyn herself stated that she wasn't perfect in Verdi. As she put it, she sang Verdi by not taking "both feet" out of the bel canto waters, so that she could go on singing the roles that brought her the most fame. This is understandable, but if that's the case, then we didn't need this long scene. Perhaps she wanted to highlight her collaboration with Luciano Pavarotti, and I'm sure Decca saw this as a way to lure the casual listener. For my money, though, they should have just included Stride La Vampa, and called it a day. This would have freed up lots of room for the stuff for which she's better recognized!

Now, another extended scene, from Norma, is completely justified. Equally important to Marilyn's legacy as an individual artist is her legacy as one-half of the Sutherland/Horne duo. I don't need to write more- the music speaks for itself.

The rest of the second disc throws in a bit of verismo (Horne is unrecognizeable in Ponchielli; Simionato she's not), a bit of German lieder, and some patriotic tunes. Along with Leontyne Price, Marilyn Horne was the most conciously patriotic singer out there, and to have left out her American recordings would have been a disgrace. But, again, we are given an ample serving of it, when it could have been scaled back some to make room for her operatic triumphs.

All in all, there is enough glorious material here for any fan of the legendary Marilyn Horne, and also those who want a taste of how a superlative mezzo/contralto sounds like.

5 out of 5 stars Vive Madame Horne !.......2004-01-09

5 out of 5 stars Some old favourites, and some unfamiliar, enjoyable voices and songs.......2007-03-11

This compilation has the usual songs that immediately bring the name of composer Victor Herbert to mind - Ah, sweet mystery of life, I'm falling in love with someone and Tramp, tramp, tramp - with such well known voices as those of Macdonald, Eddy and the famous tenors, Richard Crooks, Richard Tauber and Charles Kullmann.

Perhaps of greater interest to many listeners will be the relatively seldom heard artists, such as John McHugh, Florence Easton and Florence George. All three have very pleasant voices and aural personalities.

It is a somewhat mixed delight to hear Amelita Galli-Curci, John McCormack, Alma Gluck and Richard Werrenrath in recordings from the acoustic era. My personal favourite from that group is Galli-Cutci's charming version of A kiss in the dark.

Altogether, a well chosen mixture of the familiar and the out of the way, carefully and well re-recorded.

5 out of 5 stars An aural revelation.......2006-10-28

I've loved The Mamas & The Papas music for nearly 40 years and never got tired of hearing their songs on the radio or putting an a greatest hits compilation and just chilling out to the wonderful melodies and harmonies. A couple of years ago I heard this compilation. The first track I played was my favorite, 'Safe in My Garden' followed by 'Look Through My Window'. I couldn't believe what I was hearing; it was like I was hearing these wonderful songs for the first time. I am no audiophile and what I know about the technicalities of remastering you could write on the back of a postage stamp, in a font size of 72; all I know is that this collection makes every other M&TPs release seem like the music is being filtered through a bunch of dirty old socks. Yes, the remastering may not have removed every single audio artifact but it just sounds.....fantastic! if you love the music of The Mamas & The Papas but have not heard this collection, do yourself a favor and try and track down a copy, you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars For a digital remaster, I've heard better sound quality..........2006-03-06

I was peripherally aware of the release of this collection, and was finally moved to purchase by the news that it might disappear as MCA is replacing it with a more scale-down release with fewer tracks. What finally convinced me, though, were the glowing reports of the superb sound quality.

I own all of the original albums in their original, "from analog sources"-disclaimered CD releases, as well as the Creeque Alley collection. I now sit with those, as well as the Golden Era Collection, and am comparing the audio side by side.

While there is no question in my mind that this release has the best sound quality, it simply does not deserve the glowing reports heaped upon it here - not enough for the average listener who owns previous issues to dump them in favor it this one.

Yes, the original analog-mastered releases are sonically awful. Creeque Alley which, by the way, says "transferred to digital" in its liner, is not much of an improvement. But compared to a contemporary remaster, such as (a semi-random choice) the recent Japanese reissues of the Spanky and Our Gang original albums, this Mamas and Papas collection is still woefully inadequate. Just listen to the opening of Monday, Monday, for instance, and hear the abundant tape noise and other artifacts in the background. Perhaps the original source material was not available for this project, or perhaps they were damaged so as to limit what could be salvaged, but in any case ... I expected more.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music From A Forgotten Band.......2006-01-05

Now when I say forgotten band, I don't mean that nobody knows the Mama's and the Papa's; every body loves their hits. Beautiful arrangments and melodies mixed with the best vocal arrangments this side of the Beach Boys with simple, yet often heart wrenching lyrics. These four albums (the first two perfect, the second two merely wonderful) make a strong case for the Mama's and the Papa's as one of the greatest bands of all time. The quality of these albums are high; there is nary a filler track. I would say with the last album, the Papa's and the Mama's, there is a small amount of filler. It's obvious John Phillips was running low on steam due to many reasons; drugs, depression etc. The problem with the album is that they tried to break out of their well established style, and into more "hard core" psychadelic sounds. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't. The songs that do work are wonderful.

The other three albums, I can't even explain. It's beauty in music personified. Besides the music, this is an amazing collection as it's a) cheap. I found this for less than 20 bucks I think. Four albums for less than 20 bucks is incomparable. b) the sound is amazing. I have no idea who remastered these, but they sound like they were recorded yesterday. c) Its hard to find. I've only seen this thing in a store once, when I snatched it up. Don't pass this by if you love 60's pop music, and haven't quite experienced the band yet.

5 out of 5 stars BEYOND COMPARE.......2005-12-11

James Dewitt's review is perfect so there is not much more to say - but since I have a big mouth I have to say something.

These four individuals came together and created that sound - I think they called it "Herman" - the "creation" when they all sang together. It's THERE and HERE on this remastered masterpiece. There have been great vocal groups - none compare to the quality and sharpness of these four artists.

Their final album of their 60's recordings, "The Papas And The Mamas" is one of the most underrated records of all time. Even Mamas and Papas fans slag it off - which makes me think they need a good carton of Q-tips. Especially on this edition - you can hear how intrinsically John was producing the sound in his studio. Even high as hell they were geniuses. This recording is as important as IF YOU CAN BELIEVE YOUR EYES AND EARS - if not even more so.

5 out of 5 stars A Window To The True Spirit of the 60's.......2004-12-17

Those who are looking for a "favorable, but.." review or more crass and cruel jokes about ham sandwiches, look elsewhere.

For us hippies in the 1960's, there were two songs that made us realize that moment when we looked up when everyone else looked down: If You're Going To San Francisco and California Dreamin'. We realized that it had nothing to do with actually GOING to San Francisco or LIVING in California - it was the idea that things would be approached differently from then on.

John Philips wrote both songs. We knew he understood something deeper about a vibe that was in the country but had not been codified - and he wasn't even a hippie himself. Funny about that.

What he did was to select the finest voices he could find among the end of the popular folk music era and bring them together to perform a new kind of music. People who mistakenly lump his work in with The Association have ears of tin (though I like their work). This is instead the crossroads of The Hi-lo's, the Weavers and a kind of unabashedly romantic soft rock (before that was a pejorative term)that has not been performed since.

This collection comprises some of the finest pure SINGING of the decade of the Sixties, and that was my revelation from it. I had not properly remembered just how good a singer Cass Elliott was. Her voice is just magnificent. Denny Doherty, as one of the two great classic voices to come out of California in the Sixties ( the other being Marty Balin) is just breathtaking in both his approach and his mastery of the material. John's backup singing and his incredible vocal arrangements just lead me to wonder what he could have done with a modern studio with 128 vocal tracks. And as for Michelle, aside from being the absoulute pinnacle of attractive female rock singers then or now, I only wish the interior relationships would have permitted her to sing more leads. The great thing about this collection though is that you can hear EACH VOICE in EACH SONG to the extent that you can follow just John's voice in I Saw Her Again or just Denny in Stumble and Fall. Every lyric in every song can be clearly heard. Imagine that today!

There is more to this collection than just music - it contains artistry. If you like SINGING, even if you aren't sure about the material, BUY THIS SET. If you like the Mamas and Papas, YOU NEED THIS SET. If you want a quick Cliff's Notes on what late 60's music was really supposed to be all about YOU WANT THIS SET.
PS: Make absolutely sure you listen to the "studio chat" piece on the end of Disc 2...it'll clean your ears.

And by the way, speaking as a hippie - Cass died from a heart attack, not from a ham sandwich. Please don't defame her memory any longer with that sad-a**ed urban legend..

Reggae's golden age was as bright as the following years have been dim for the once glorious genre. Indeed, it's the work of the pioneers of the '60s and '70s that, more than ever, defines reggae decades after the heydays of Marley, Toots, and Tosh. This four-disc, chronologically arranged box set (in contrast with 2001's similarly expansive but more wide-ranging Reggae Box) maintains its focus on the first decade and a half of reggae and its antecedents, allowing the compilers to delve deeper into the great one-offs that played a vital role in shaping the classic sound. Yes, like countless reggae compilations before it, this Trojan set features "Israelites," "Pressure Drop," "Rivers of Babylon," "Trenchtown Rock," and "Marcus Garvey." In addition to those indisputable touchstones, however, This is Reggae Music generously and expertly plunges into a remarkable archive to highlight the less-celebrated likes of Bongo Man Byfield, the Uniques, and Ken Parker. Colin Escott's pithy but erudite history and track-by-track summary further flesh out this exemplary package. --Steven Stolder

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-04-07

I did not enjoy this collection as much as I thought I would. Many of the songs might be important for "historical value" but were lousy music. I did get some new names/groups from this collection but overall, not worth the price in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Rudie No Fear Boxset.......2007-02-21

One fat compilation, "This is Reggae Music" is as fine a collection of roots reggae music as can be found anywhere. This collection brings together many great--and often forgotten--ska and reggae tunes from the 60s and the first half of the 70s. Herein, one finds gems like Derek Morgan's "Fat Man," The Ethiopians "Train to Skaville," The Upsetter's "The Return of Django," Eric Donaldson's "Cherry Oh Baby," and Burning Spear's classic "Marcus Garvey." One will also find many songs from artists that appeared with one song and vanished into the vapors of time, forgotten except for the mark they made in vinyl. One also hears songs that are earlier versions of later hits, or songs that were later cannibalized by other artists giving a reggae devotee an idea of the evolution of reggae music. The songs on the four disks sound great, and box set's packaging is outstanding with great assortment of photos of the artists and environs of the time.

I feel "This is Reggae Music" has a few shortcomings concerning the selected songs and artists. First, there are too many songs from Desmond Dekker, Toots & the Maytals, the Wailers clan (Bob and Peter), and from "The Harder They Come" soundtrack (roughly four or five of each). I love all those dudes, but their music is readily available on a great number of records and compilations. That's who's over-represented, now who's under-represented. Not included on this collection are the Skatelites and Prince Buster--two of the biggest names in reggae's development.

Despite a few shortcomings, if I had to pick one reggae compilation, this would be it. These tunes rock. So sit back, listen, and help Rudie shake up Orange Street.

5 out of 5 stars Knoked Out.......2007-01-13

After Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, and maybe 3 or 4 others who have managed to get on the radio, most folks I come across aren't aware of the myriad of performers in this field, or how long it has actually been around. They get this look of surprise when one points out that "I Can See Clearly Now" by Johnny Nash was a reggae song. This is a truely wonderful collection in a nice package. There is not a bad song in the set. It knoked me out.

4 out of 5 stars Must have.......2005-05-04

Next to Tougher than Tough, this is one of the best reggae box sets out there. I hope they come out with a second volume of 1976-1980, that would be sweet!

5 out of 5 stars A Sonic Goldmine.......2005-02-13

Roots, rock, reggae. The 4-CD set ENDS with Burning Spear's Marcus Garvey. I worried about sound quality with vintage cuts, but the sound is as good as U.S. rock singles from the same periods. And the tunes! Great music, Bob and Peter and Winston and Sly and Robbie had teachers. Hear them.

Home of the Columbia and Epic labels, CBS Records (now Sony Music) was late getting into the rock & roll game, despite issuing some classic '50s R&B singles on the subsidiary OKeh. Corporate aversion to the music was largely due to Mitch "Sing Along with Mitch" Miller, the A&R head whose philistine bent helped run Frank Sinatra from the company in 1952, shortly before he revived his career at Capitol with some of the greatest American music ever recorded. Not surprisingly, the The Golden Era volume of Sony's massive Soundtrack for a Century project is a mixed bag. Pre-Elvis gems such as Sinatra's "Birth of the Blues" sit alongside unforgivable schlock by Miller and the Four Lads before rock & roll-based pop finally shakes things up. With everyone from Dylan and the Yardbirds to the Cyrkle ("Red Rubber Ball") and the Looking Glass ("Brandy [You're a Fine Girl]") on hand, these two CDs are a mishmash, but highly representative of what CBS had to offer Top 40 once it realized Buddy Greco (not included) wasn't the future. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Thanks for the Memories!.......2006-05-05

This is a superb review of a superb musical era. Anyone who lived the music of these years will love this set.

5 out of 5 stars Great sampling of pop music!.......2001-06-13

This is a great mixed bag of pop music from the 50's through the mid-70's. Like any collection, it is missing many pieces that you or I might have chosen to include, but let's face it...there is so much music to choose from and a limted number of songs that can fit on 2 CDs! Keep in mind too that if some of your favorite stars are missing, it is probably because they did not record for labels that today fall under the umbrella of Sony Music...essentially, these are all artists who recorded for Columbia or Epic.

This entire series "A Soundtrack for a Century" is a great opportunity to obtain some of the best songs of the 20th century as well as some very obscure ones...seek out the entire series and buy those volumes that appeal to you!

5 out of 5 stars A great tribute for a truly great artist.......2007-04-22

If you want to know about Tito Gobbi, this is the set for you. Truly the very best of this phenomenal baritone, one of those rara avis in opera (both a great singer and a great actor).
On both CDs, is Gobbi in his finest: from comedy (All'idea di quel metallo/Come Paride vezzoso) to tragedy (Nemico della Patria), from grand opera (Cruda, funesta smania) to verismo (Si puo?).
The first CD includes some selections of less known operas (such as Zazà, Fedora, I gioielli della Madonna or L'arlesiana) that adds value thanks to Gobbi's artistry.
But it is truly on the second CD where Gobbi shines as the powerful artist he was. Devoted entirely to Giuseppe Verdi's incredible rols for baritone, track after track Gobbi reveals himself as one of the milestones in opera; his deeply emotional approach of Di Provenza il mar (La Traviata) and A tal nome palpito (Simon Boccanegra) matches perfectly with the grandeur of Eri tu (Un ballo in maschera) or Dio che nell'alma infondere (Don Carlo), and chilling Pietà rispetto amore (Macbeth) and Iago's Credo (Otello).
Cherry over the cake: his portrait of Falstaff...

Do not miss this album. Not only a excellent tribute to Gobbi, but also one of the best double sets of The Very Best series of EMI.

A wonderful collection of the roles sung by this superb and multi-talented
baritone of days long gone. In 65 years as an opera lover, I never heard a
better Figaro or a more bone-chilling Scarpia.

This scruffy, well-traveled, literate Rhode Islander recalls the desultory whispers of Nick Drake, the ragged tunefulness of Ryan Adams, and the natural wit of a young John Prine. He may come off as a slacker, painting his name on water towers and jamming to Townes Van Zandt on the porch, but his lyrical skills, unpretentiously poetic and refreshingly concise, suggest a purposefulness that's deeper than just folksy charm. Within the sparest musical framework--fingerpicked guitar, whirling organ, lo-fi drums, some bass--Ritter evokes a delicately dense romanticism that's more on edge than earnest. "This world must be frightening," he sings, "everybody's on the run/but I can't leave this world behind." There's quiet wisdom in Ritter's world; fans of post-Dylan singer-songwriters will want to listen close. --Roy Kasten

4 out of 5 stars Listen once and you'll be trying to write your own songs.......2003-12-20

I do not want to say that Josh Ritter is a "new Dylan" or the second coming of Townes Van Zandt, because he is definately the first Josh Ritter. I do want to say that catching his first album before he has exploded into mainstream consciousness must be similiar to what it was like to discover Dylan or Townes when they were still getting started. His song writing is at that level. In addition, as my wife points out, he sings better than a lot of "your raspy male singers". After listening to the album I immediately started writing my own lyrics. Yes, they're bad, but I'm having a ball. Thanks, Josh

5 out of 5 stars Worthy of the Aplomb.......2003-09-26

I don't think this musician is any kin to John Ritter, who so unfortunately passed away recently. but I can report that he can hang with most contemporary folkies these days. Josh Ritter has assimilated the old sounds without getting tedious or imitative about it. You'll swear you've heard the guy before, but you probably haven't. He's at once a Proteus and an original. The songs are from the collective folk consciousness, but newly minted. Love the sound. Love the backup band, the production values, etc. A very ownable CD.

5 out of 5 stars Very Talented!.......2003-06-13

This is one of the best albums I've heard in a few years. Every song is very catchy - you won't want to quit listening to it! After hearing the haunting 'Come and Find Me' on Six Feet Under, I had to rush out and buy the album. This is one purchase you won't regret - especially when he becomes a household name (as he inevitablly will) and you can tell all your friends you heard of him 'way back when.' He has a new album coming out in the Fall of 2003.

5 out of 5 stars Just really good.......2003-06-10

Josh Ritter's "The Golden Age of Radio" does what many albums fail to do; it creates a world that you can lose yourself in, that almost sweeps you off your feet. When I first heard it I was blown away, with the gentle first track "Come and Find Me" into the second "Me and Jiggs" which has more of a alt-country feel to it, but is neither abrupt or disappointing. Ritter's lyrics are beautifully woven, and each song is recognizably distinct, however most are reminiscent of Drake and Dylan. An amazing buy, you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars An up and coming artist........2003-04-24

'Golden Age of Radio' is a great overall, folk album. The songs really make you wonder of times past and reflect on deep moments. The HBO series, Six Feet Under, used his first song, "Come and Find Me" at the end of one of its episodes this season. In the context of the scene at the end, it was haunting, I thought it must be something that Dylan did or possibly Nick Drake, and searched the lyrics on google and came up with Josh and bought this album.

Coincidentally, Josh was playing right near me a week later, in an intimate venue of 150. We went to see him and he was excellent. Humorous, while humble he strummed through each song masterfully, while adding interesting anecdotes to how he wrote some songs and how he came to be a musician. It was a great evening.

My favorites include, "Come and Find Me," "You've got the moon" and "Leaving." The ending track, "Song for Fireflies" ends with a very moving guitar that brings this album altogether very nicely. If you like "New" folk, then definitely pick this one up.

4 out of 5 stars A Londoner.......2007-03-12

These songs were recorded from 1905 through 1931 and, therefore, the sound quality is quite poor. However, the songs were well sung and a lot of fun. They were a cause for a chuckle or two (or maybe even three), especially, "Waiting at the Church," "Quite Alright," "Grandfather's Clock," and "When Father Papered the Parlour."
