When Storms of Life's singles were climbing the charts in 1986, they sounded like a miracle. After all, at the time, Randy Travis was just about the only young exemplar of traditional country you could hear on the radio. Travis's first hits ("1982," "On the Other Hand," "Diggin' Up Bones") helped put twang, briefly, back in the saddle, inspiring what was quickly dubbed the new traditionalist movement. So, yeah, this is an important album, but what's really important here is Travis's beautifully expressive and quivering baritone. On the bridge of "No Place Like Home," he gets down on his knees and begs his wife to take him back in--and, with that voice, it's no wonder he pulls it off. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars Really good.......2007-06-26

I admit I bought this because I couldn't pass up an album that included a song called "Send My Body Home [On a Freight Train]", but there really isn't a bum track on there.

5 out of 5 stars Great Debut Album.......2007-04-08

This is Randy's mainstream debut album and one of the best country debut albums of the era, along with Dwight Yoakam's "Guitar, Cadillacs, etc, etc". The album is jam packed full of great songs, wonderful singing and playing and superb production from Kyle Lenning. There are quite a few of Randy's "Best Of" albums out there and all of them sample heavily from the "Storms of Life" album; a very good indication that the album was out of the top draw. It is incomprehensible that this album is now out of print although there are some Amazon re-sellers selling it for less than $5 which is amazing value for one sensational record. I'm not a big Travis fan (I only have two of his albums (vinyl) and one CD - this one) but the Storms Of Life albums is a necessary purchase for any traditonal country music fan.

5 out of 5 stars After 20 years, this is still the best album around!.......2006-07-03

I have nearly 50 years of recordings in my collection and this album has been in my top 5 from the day I bought it. The other reviews written here state the reasons why it is one of the best country music albums ever made. The main reason is the voice of Randy Travis and the other reasons are the songs themselves; each one is excellent. A perfect example of what is the best of country music.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely The Best!!!!!.......2006-03-19

I first heard this "tape" in a restaurant while having supper. I had to go to the music store and buy it. That was back in 1986 and now I want the CD. I have the tape and have probably worn it out. I have a CD player that I listen to on my way home from work. I wish I could buy the CD but cannot afford the money. I know I will be able to get it soon....I will have to save for it but I keep listening to the "samples" on this web site and hopefully will be satisfied until I get my own CD. I love Randy Travis and I just wish I could have this CD now. Thanks and please, if you can get the CD now, buy it and enjoy, because you definitely will!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best album of the last 25 years .......2005-12-15

There are very few albums where every song is a winner, but this is one of them. All ten songs could have been released as successful singles. "1982" (originally titled "1962" but that title was wrong for a singer as young as Travis) and "On The Other Hand" were the first two hits followed by "Digging Up Bones" and "No Place Like Home" but the quality doesn't drop one iota on the non-singles such as "Reasons I Cheat" and "Send My Body (Home On A Freight Train)" and "There'll Always Be A Honky-Tonk"

I've been collecting recordings since 1968 - this is one of my top five ever along with JOHNNY CASH AT FOLSOM PRISON, BUCK OWENS LIVE IN LONDON, COUNTRY CHARLEY PRIDE and GUITAR TOWN - Steve Earle

3 out of 5 stars My View Review.......2004-04-16

I felt the CD has some beautiful songs. I just feel that he should try to appeal to more than just 16-24. Some people are a little more traditional. He made no attempt to communicate with those of use who have been in church since child hood. True enough I am 28 and I do like contemporary urban gospel. He came really close with 'Uh Uh Peace'. The entire cd is wonderful I just believe that he should want to touch more than just one generation. For example: an a capella spiritual, a traditional sunday morning song with a foot stompin' hand clappin' feel of his own original words, maybe a country gospel toon. I just feel like he has boxed himself in to one avenue. I don't see the creativity.

Make no mistake, I love the CD. I listen to it regularly.

5 out of 5 stars Loving Greg O'quin's title cut "Unh-Unh".......2003-05-08

If you don't have this CD, then you should get it in a hurry. I heard one cut ( title: Unh-Unh) and fell in love with it, then I bought the whole CD, and it is "AWESOME", (One of the cuts on this CD). This is definitely by far the best I have heard from Greg O'quin. As long as he (Mr. O'quin) keeps telling the storm, everything is going to be great. God has really worked in you with this project. It is rejoicing to my soul everytime I hear it (everyday, all-day). GOD IS "EVERYTHING" (another cut).

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect CD If Your Going Through A Storm.......2003-01-10

thiz cd is wonderful and it will minister to your soul if you are going through a storm because the songs help you get through your storm. the song Unh-unh! and I told the storm tells you what to tell your storm. I really liked the interludes and Greg's storm because he is real with what was going on in his life and how he made it through his storms because "my God surrounds us"

5 out of 5 stars Anointed.......2002-06-06

Saints let me tell ya. When I first got the cd I was a pretty big O'quin fan. But when I put the cd in I got to the first couple of songs and judged them by the beat so I did what most people probably did and fast-forwarded to "I told the Storm (Remix)". Well I gave the cd another chance the next day at work and as I have been going through some thing I was praying and the Lord opened my ears and heart to "Awesome", "Unh-Unh!" and "I told the Storm" the Spirit began to sit in and minister to me. A word is what I receive (present tense) when I listen to it.
For anyone that's going through you need this cd for anyone that's not you need this cd b/c we all have storms come in our lifes.

5 out of 5 stars great CD.......2001-09-17

This CD is in the stores now - great CD - if you have the opportunity to pick this one up - you will love it - not saying that because - it is awesome. Shouts out to James Pickney a member of Greg O'Quin and Joyful Noyze and a member of Pleasant Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas.

Dynastic bluesman Bernard Allison is a second-generation star now shining in his own right. The guitarist-vocalist son of the late legend Luther Allison paid his early dues leading Koko Taylor's crack Blues Machine band, learned the family business leading his father's electrifying group in Europe, and has now created his own catalog of fine recordings. Storms of Life is the most eclectic and uniformly excellent example yet. After the sizzling solo slide guitar opener "Slip Slidin'," Allison roams wide and free, confidently overlaying his blues personality on material ranging from the reggae-tinged "Just Do Me Any Way You Want" to the R&B title track, which glides over a cushion of keyboards and extra percussion. A bouncy, horn-powered rendition of "Goodbye Little Girl" that recalls Bobby "Blue" Bland provides a fitting conclusion. Allison surprisingly, but effectively, mixes a wide variety of cover material, including everything from ZZ Top's "I Wanna Drive You Home" to Mark Knopfler's "I Think I Love You Too Much" to mentor Johnny Winter's suitably manic "Mean Town Blues." The well-chosen covers, including tunes by Anders Osborne, Leon Russell, and papa Luther, convincingly demonstrate his gifts as an interpreter. --Michael Point

Album Description

Bernard Allison was born to play and sing the blues, as well as born to play and sing funk, rock, R&B and more. The son of blues legend Luther Allison and a guitarist with a stunning and broad command of his instrument, he leads the movement that is creating blues music for a new generation. Already a major star in Europe following a decade of living and touring on the Continent, Allison recently returned to his homeland to rapidly establish himself as both a thrilling player and a musical stylist who seamlessly fuses tradition with contemporary sounds.

Allison's blues for a new century are indelibly stamped onto Storms of Life, his second release with Tone-Cool Records. As he works his way through material by fellow guitar talents like Mark Knopfler, Johnny Winter, Billy Gibbons, Anders Osborne, and his father Luther, it's clear that Allison puts his own variegated imprint on everything he plays. As Billboard observed of his last album, "Although he plays with the power and majesty of his father, Allison stands in nobody's shadow. [He] will certainly have an impact on the modern blues idiom."

For Storms of Life, Allison joined forces with producer/engineer David Z, whose credits match Allison's stylistic breadth: blues players old and new like Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, John Mayall and Chris Duarte, such rock acts as Fine Young Cannibals and Big Head Todd & The Monsters, and R&B stars like Jody Watley and Jill Jones. The results prove that the roots of blues music support an idiom that is still very much alive, and continuing to grow and evolve.

Album Description

2002 release for the great blues guitarist. Special guests include Buddy Guy, Johnny Lang, John Mayall & Chris Duarte. 13 tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Really strong effort here.......2006-01-29

Bernard Allison is a bluesman like his late father. He has appeal to blues fans but also like his father has not really crossed over to the rock fans. That is probably due to the restricted nature of what radio today than what Allison performs.
If you are a fan of guitar driven rock like Eric Clapton, the Allman Brothers, Aerosmith, you will love this. The guy can play and he can play loud! He's also a fine singer, bandleader, and writer. He;s one of those well kept secrets that should be huge star.

5 out of 5 stars Braving the Storms.......2004-06-01

Once in a great while, I hear a new blues release that recalls the depth and energy of the great electric blues players I grew up listening to, players like Waters, Winter, Clapton, Green, Rush, et al. After listening to this CD for almost two years, I've come to the conclusion that it's the best blues release of 2002. It's got everything a great blues album needs. Allison's voice and guitar work are tasty, gritty, and well-seasoned, evidence of the amount of work and dedication he put into his apprenticeships with Koko Taylor and his father. And the song choices are superb. My favorites are "Fistful of Dirt," a killer rock-steady mid-tempo shuffle with a profound message about living through hard times; "Mean Town Blues," which is ample proof that Allison can lay claim to Johnny Winter's Texas electric slide legacy; and "Snake Bit Again," a remarkable vehicle for Allison's gritty, dead-on singing. There's a lot of redundancy in more recent blues releases, but this album shows Allison is capable of being a truly original talent in this often hackneyed genre. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars BERNARD ALLISON ROCKS!!!.......2004-05-04

When I first came into the blues scene most of my friends in the hood would make fun and call it old peoples music, but I was relieved to find out that this guy was only ten year older than me. What's even better is that he's not alone in the new blues scene. I was blown away with his first two albums "Hang On" and "Across the Water" were he was playing with the Jimi/Stevie influencial fire, but when this album began with the slide guitar playing I couldn't move. This was something I had not heard from him before. Sucks his talent is rarely heard. If you are a blues/rock fan you will not be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars my my he`s smooth.......2002-10-04

THIS IS JUST A SOLID BLUES/ROCK CD.BERNARD CAN FLAT OUT PLAY THE SLIDE GUITAR AND THE REGULAR GUITAR.HE DOES A GREAT REMAKE OF A JOHNNY WINTER SONG MEAN TOWN BLUES.BUY THIS IF YOUR INTO GREAT BLUES GUITAR WORK.

5 out of 5 stars HOT!... what more can I say?.......2002-08-17

I was first introduced to Mr. Allison only this past summer by his electrifying performance at this year's Prince A Celebration: Xenophobia. I am not normally a Blues fan, but this man is a master guitarist...of not only the Blues, but also of Funk and Rock!!!

Even Prince had to give him his due at the concert. But back to the album... Storms of Life is an excellent piece of work. From start to finish it has your head bobbing and your toes tapping. If you have not purchased music from Bernard before and want a good sampling to wet your taste...this is the CD to get!

And if you are lucky enough to have him hit your town for a concert do check him out. The CD is just the pacifier but seeing him LIVE is a real treat.
