Editorial Reviews

Neal McCoy got lucky on No Doubt About It, for Muscle Shoals legend Barry Beckett, who has produced everyone from Bob Dylan to John Prine, took charge of production. Beckett chose some catchy songs and presents them straightforwardly in the no-nonsense Texas-country style of Willie Nelson and George Jones. "The City Put the Country Back in Me" and "Small Up and Simple Down" tackle the same theme--forsaking the crazed pace of urban living for the simplicities of rural life--with the same infectious strategy: hard-rocking honky tonk and sing-along title chants. Al Anderson co-wrote one of the best ballads, the Buddy Holly-ish "I Apologize," and Bonnie Raitt's favorite country writer, Mike Reid, co-wrote the other, the soul-tinged "Something Moving in Me." No matter what the song, McCoy sings with a natural ease that's delightful in its simplicity. --Geoffrey Himes

4 out of 5 stars Way too brief retrospective.......2002-01-05

If you like your country music on the honky-tonkin' light side, you can't go wrong with Neal McCoy. Hits like "Wink," "You Gotta Love That," and "The Shake" (the only new track included ) may border on novelty, but they sure are fun. McCoy's Greatest Hits also presents some top-notch ballads with "No Doubt About It" and a remake of the Casinos "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye." He even manages to stray from the festive and/or romantic mold with a nice slice of acidity titled "If I Was A Drinkin' Man."

Unlike most major label country artists who have emerged over the past decade, it took three albums before McCoy got his first big hit with "No Doubt About It" in late 1993. He only released a couple of albums since then, and with a few tracks included here that didn't make it near the country top ten, it would appear this Greatest Hits collection was a little premature. It certainly is skimpier than other recent country sets, at ten tracks totalling 33 minutes in length (this was the unfortunate standard in country music just a couple of years ago). Ultimately, like a lot of McCoy's music, this set is fine - just not substantial.

5 out of 5 stars Neal McCoy at his best!!.......2001-12-25

I just love this CD!! From start to finish, Neal McCoy puts on a show. I'd recomend this CD for anyone who's not familer with Neal's music, I think he showcased his best songs on this CD. I think the sleeper hit on this album is Now I Pray for Rain, a little heard song from this artist.

5 out of 5 stars Neal Shakes It........2000-06-14

The First 2 Songs I Heard From Neal Where: "No Doubt About It", And "Wink". He Dances The Night Away On "The Shake" Which Also Appears On The "Be Good At It" Album. He Can Sing Ballads Like: "The City Put The Country Back In Me", "For A Change", "Their Playing Our Song", "You Gotta Love That", And "You Can Tell Me Goodbye". This CD Will Never Leave My House.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is excellent!.......1998-11-20

Every single song on this CD is great. I saw Neal in Merriville, IN not long ago and he was the best entertainer I have ever seen live and I've seen alot of concerts. My 4 yr. old son goes crazy over this CD. Every day to and from preshool (it's a 1/2 hour drive) he has to have it playing. I only wish it also had "If You Can't Be Good, Be Good At It" on there also. Keep it up Neal!!! We truly love you!!!

Great song selections with a wide range of appeal to all kinds of music lovers. So many of these songs would make great videos. My mind's eye can picture the little girl looking out the window in "Jessie" and I think "Tailgate" is one of my favorite songs in this whole collection. Neal McCoy will always be my favorite and the diversity of the songs on this CD really allows him to showcase his voice. Hope this is only the beiginning of much more from this well loved and very talented man.

Great!! This CD is worth every penny! Buy it and you will be very happy you did. Every song is great and worth listening to over and over. If the Country Music Awards shows Nominating commitees don't acknowledge this one, than something is wrong with the Industry! I bought it because I couldn't get "Billy's Got His Beer Goggles On" outta my head! After reading the other great Customer reviews on how good the whole CD is I had to go out and buy it! Well, I'm telling ya it is Great!! You'll be glad you did. Buy this one! Neal you have yourself a Winner!!

Missing in action for too long, Neal McCoy is back in a big way. I love this entire CD. From "Got Mud" to "Hillbilly Rap" you can hear the fun Neal had making this latest offering. It doesn't hurt that he now has his own record label and can record what he wants, not what the suits want.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this at all costs.......2004-11-10

Excruciating. Ray Brown is one of my all-time heroes but even he can't redeem this appalling travesty. Kiri Te Kanawa should be prevented from ever attempting this repertiore again by any means necessary.

If you want a good example of how great jazz with a singer can be, buy "John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman" or Charlie Haden "The Art of Song" instead.

5 out of 5 stars "A lesson in laid back CLASS".......2004-10-14

Here is the most beautiful rendition of "Never Was You" ever with the restrained vocal purity of Kiri and the awesome chords of Andre's piano...a real gem. Ray Brown and Mundell also contribute their world-class talents to this unique UNPRESSURED album. A treasure that will please music lovers for many years. GRAB IT WHILE YOU CAN!

5 out of 5 stars Kiri does it again!.......2004-04-26

Wonderful! As is everything the inimitable Kiri does. No, she does not sound like other jazz singers but adds the Kiri touch that has made her one of the most listened to of all performers, whether of opera or jazz. This CD made my ears very happy. I'd advised the disgruntled writer to hold on to her CD--there is only one available on the entire internet and the seller is asking for $75.00. An unmistakable message--it appears that Kiri lovers don't want to part with Kiri CDs. Also advise other viewers to get the VHS from which this CD was made. Inexpensive now but it'll not be for long. It's called Kiri & Andre: The making of Sidetracks. It has the best closeups of Kiri that I've ever seen and shows what a happy-go-lucky gal she is. Also recommend her Kiri! on VHS (her 50th Birthday Concert) It is one of the best musical recitals ever made--period. Sorry, the price is out of sight.

3 out of 5 stars +1/2 A worthy addition to the modern Nashville sound.......2003-07-11

This is one of those immaculate, perfectly crafted modern Nashville albums that makes you shake your head and marvel at how the corniest formulas and cheesiest production can still pull you in, even when you can't stand the style... To his credit, McCoy's rich, resonant vocals are a big part of the success... From the opening notes, it's clear he's matured as a singer and grown into his voice. A couple of these songs are just too awful for even him to pull it off (notably the super-sappy power ballads, "Only You" and "Completely") but others may provoke an unwilling smile, such as the clever, classic "That's Not Her," and the old-fashioned "Life Of The Party." Nothing earthshaking, but still an album that shows him a worthy heir to the '70s countrypolitan tradition.

1 out of 5 stars disappointment.......2001-09-24

I really wanted to enjoy this cd-but I don't. Not one song bears repeated listening.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Yet!.......2001-09-08

I love this CD. Every song on it is easy to sing to and brings a smile. For those nay sayers who put down Neal and his sentimental ways give this CD a listen. With the right exposure the most hesitant of country listenrs will be wooed over with great songs, "Lipstick on the Radio, Strongest Man in the World and Life of the Party."
It's really a shame that he doesn't get more air time. He's great.

I recommend this CD to anyone who loves life, love and good times.

4 out of 5 stars When life seems more than you can bear...listen to this........2001-06-27

Sometimes life gets real heavy. When it gets like that I pop in this CD, turn up the player and start singing along. There is just the right mix of songs, sentimental, fast, slow, just plain ol' happy. I enjoy every song on this CD...but Lipstick on the Radio and Strongest Man in the World are my favorites. You know, they say if you're feel blah, or blue, or restless you should get up and move. With Neal's CD playing you'll have plenty to dance to! Thanks Neal for the smile in my spirit when I listen to this.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......1999-05-31

Neal's done it again. This is a great album. I Was and Girls of Summer are the best songs. The hole album was great. I think people would enjoy this album. It has a show tune, a couple of fast songs and some slow songs. It's great.

Product Description

BUSH IS BAD is a hilarious, cathartic and unabashedly partisan new revue by Joshua Rosenblum, playing at New York City's Triad Theatre. BUSH IS BAD, which has been described as a cross between Forbidden Broadway and The Daily Show, offers catchy tunes, wickedly funny lyrics and scathing impersonations of the president and his dissembling gang of conspirators. Among the best-reviewed new musicals of the season, it has been described as “savvy, uproarious, [and] delicious,” with “lyrics that draw blood and melodies that stick in the brain,” eliciting “raucous, borderline orgasmic reactions.” The New York Times declared that “Bush-hating has become fun again!” BUSH IS BAD stars Kate Baldwin, Neal Mayer and Michael McCoy, and is directed and choreographed by Gary Slavin with musical direction by Rosenblum. Costumes are by Anne Auberjonois, with lighting and sound by Tonya Pierre. Song titles include “How Can 59 Million People Be So Dumb?,” “Good Conservative Values,” “The Gay Agenda,” and “New Hope for the Fabulously Wealthy.” There are also riffs on how famous composers of the past would have treated the “Bush is Bad” theme, with German Romantic composer Robert Schumann’s “Das Busch ist Schlecht,” and a transformation of Kurt Weill’s “Surabaya, Johnny” into a lament by Laura Bush called “Sure, You Betcha, Georgie.”

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Well worth it!!!.......2006-05-08

I saw the show at the Triad in NYC, and have been singing the music for the past 4 weeks since I was there. Politics with humor that tells it how it is!!

5 out of 5 stars Musical political satire doesn't get any better than this.......2006-02-14

The great thing about the songs on this disc is that finally someone is telling it like it is - but it's funny! And catchy. Some of the songs are downright brilliant, like "The Culture of Life" which simply states all the ridiculous contradictions of the right to life movement (anti-abortion, pro-death penalty) to a vaudeville soft shoe. It's funny, but inside you're squirming because you know there are people out there who think like this. Kate Baldwin as God, tired of being invoked by Bush and his 'divine right of presidency' is wonderful, and Michael McCoy's John Ashcroft singing the "Beaten by the Dead Man Blues" is another of those scary/funny songs. I also love the debate number, where Neal Mayer is hilarious as Bush being fed answers by Rove via a transmitter - the mysterious jacket lump. It probably helps that I've seen the show (it's really great, by the way) but the disc totally holds up to repeated listening. Like any good comedy, it gets funnier upon repetition.

4 out of 5 stars Political humor at its best.......2006-01-26

Funny, erudidte, singable and far more original in its music and scathing in its satire than anything done by similar groups on conservative NPR. I only wish the mix on this CD were better engineered to make the lyrics more crisp and clear (they sometimes lose out to the instrumentation). But I can also understand how the producers wanted to gain the immediacy of a live audience relating to very immediate political issues.

5 out of 5 stars Bush is Bad is Bad!.......2006-01-25

I thought it might just be gimmicky and superficial, but it enlightened me. This is really good music, and I can't wait to see the musical when I get to New York next.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific palliation if not a complete cure!.......2006-01-23

Bush is Bad: The Musical Cure for the Blue-State Blues is a recording of a cabaret performance at the Triad Theatre in New York City. It is current, topical, and amazingly funny considering the seriousness of the underlying issues. The concept music and lyrics were composed by Joshua Rosenblum who plays the piano accompaniment, while seasoned Broadway vocalists with comedic skill sing the lyrics. The result is marvelously musical and superbly funny. None of the music sounds trite, dreary, or formulaic. It is written in genre, but imbued with creative touches that give the songs independent interest and leave you humming the tunes hours later. The concept and the lyrics are on the edge. The language is clear and precise, maintains verisimilitude by understatement, and finds a pathway to hope and humor, even when it seems almost impossible. If there is disappointment it is, perhaps, when you have finished listening to the recording and the melodies are still dancing through your head. For, while the Blue-State Blues may have been alleviated, they have not been cured.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best albums yet!.......2006-02-01

If you missed the few times country radio played "Forever Works for Me" and the emotional power ballad "Every Man for Himself", then you need to buy this album.

When you do, you'll also get great songs like "What Would Love Say". Kind of a What Would Jesus Do type of a message. There's a little humor with the song "Disconnected". At the end of the song, the girl hangs up on the boy and the background singers sing the part of the dial tone. It fades seamlessly into an actual dial tone. I really like the all the drums in track 5. "How on earth can I deny it when my heart keeps beatin' it in to my mind?" This album is all about love and you'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars True Cowboy Spirit.......2001-11-15

I am a die heard McCoy fan and no doubt listen to his music with a bias towards loving it. But this CD is simply great.
Neal steps away from the today trend of goatee'd crooners and pop cross overs. Neal's sound is unique and soulful. Smooth and touching. His ballads reach even my husband's busy thoughts.

I do/have recommended this to my family and friends. Let me tell you, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect blend of country and a l'il bit of soul!.......2001-11-08

Neal shows his deep soul and country roots in a perfect blend on what we think is the best album of his career. At the release of this record, Neal already had 5 million in record sales, five No. 1 hits, nine top 10 singles and two Entertainer of the Year awards. His hits have ranged from traditional country, hot country dance to soulful ballads; but, we've never seen him combine them as well as he has on this CD. Each song is honestly a candidate for a single release.

There are four strong power ballads including What Would Love Say which every father and son can understand. It's about a father teaching his son how he should deal with a bully. A Love That Strong is no doubt a hit love ballad with a powerful and tasteful vocal performance from Neal. The Key To Your Heart gave me the feeling of If I Had Only Known from the Eight Seconds Soundtrack even though it a totally different kind of song. Every Man For Himself is a great song for the single guys which basically says that we are all friends; but, when it comes to meeting women, it's Every man For Himself.

The album starts with two really addictive upbeat love songs. Count On Me is an nice play on the phrase with the chorus 'You took the one out of lonely/Put the two back in together/with three little words 'I Love You'/Forever and ever endlessly/You can count on me'. Forever Works For Me is proabably my favorite song because it reminds me of when you meet a girl you really like. He checks his calendar and say he can see her 'Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday/How 'bout Friday night/We might as well spend the weekend gettin' all our plans just right.' My Life Began With You is another unique love song which says that he can remember a few things about himself before he met her such as 'I was born\I was raised\In a town in Indiana\Went to school\Went to work'.

Overall, this is one of our favorite albums of the year because it just doesn't recycle the same old lyrics. It's got some great themes written in very fresh and creative ways. It has a variety of rhythms with Neal's voice shining over all of them. The only thing better would be seeing him in concert.

5 out of 5 stars This Is A Phenomenal CD - One of Neal's Best.......2000-10-31

I must say that when I first heard this CD I wasn't completely impressed, however, after listening 2-3 times, I became totally hooked on it! Neal is at his best -- both with wonderful ballads and catchy, upbeat tunes! His song, Every Man For Himself, which is also his current single, is really great. The more you listen, the more you fall in love with this song. Also, the first song, Count On Me, is another winner. All I can say is buy it, play it, and you'll find yourself listening to it over and over again; it's very addictive! This CD definitely deserves a five-star rating!

5 out of 5 stars Always #1.......2000-09-28

Neal is just getting better!!! This cd is wonderful (as are all of his others). He sings with such emotion! He has truly earned the title "Entertainer of the Year" and should have that title every year!! I've even gotton friends to love him who don't like country! After they saw him they were amazed at how full of energy and how much fun he was to see. If you get a chance - see him. You won't regret it!!! HE'S GREAT!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Something even better.......2000-07-13

I don't want to sound 'Like a broken record' when I say that Be Good At It is just another sign of what a great recording artist Neal is. When I purchased this CD, I wan't sure I would like it as well as the others. But once again, Neal has out done himself. Each song is just another of Neal's great work. I have enjoyed this one tremendously. All I can say is that I lookk forward to the release of his new CD 'Forever Works For Me'. Cynthia Overstreet

4 out of 5 stars Very good album.......2001-01-16

Neal McCoy is a real underated entertainer. This 1995 album contains some great songs. "For a Change" and "They're playin' our song" were big hits and are two of my favourites. This album is a good mix of ballads and up-tempo songs. "Plain Jane" is a fun danceable song. I recommend this album to all country lovers.

5 out of 5 stars You gotta love this album.......2000-09-17

It's hard to believe that Neal McCoy isn't more popular of a country music artist. Sure, he's not one of the best singers of all, but he does have some great songs. This album showcases some of his best songs. "They're Playin' Our Song" is one of my favorite country songs of all. This album also has a lot of other good songs such as the title track and "Y-O-U."

If you get any of Neal McCoy's albums other than his greatest hits, I would recommend getting this one.

5 out of 5 stars Neal McCoy- one of my ultimate faves in country!!!.......2003-01-08

This is one of the first CDs I ever bought- and it's TERRIFIC all the way around. Great lyrics and a great voice from a singer who comes across as genuine in EACH song!!! In his performances, he always has a ton of energy and personality. Seems like a real fun guy! My faves are "No Doubt About It," "Why Now" and "Something Moving In Me."

5 out of 5 stars Great Listen!.......1998-08-05

Neal's voice is so-o-o smooth. My husband doesn't like much country, but this is one album he really likes. All our Neal McCoy CD's are the first ones in the CD pack when we travel, and are the ones always laying out by the CD player at home. Why put them away if you're always playing them? You can't lose with this one.
