As much time as country artists spend out on the road--200 or more nights a year in most cases--you'd think they'd release a lot more live albums. Yet the whole idea of concert recordings seems to scare the pants off the control freaks at Nashville's record companies. Fortunately, a handful of country acts have dispensed with the conventional wisdom and released terrific live discs. Tracy Lawrence's --Live is a fine example of what can happen when you put an exciting singer in front of an excitable audience. At the baby-cheeked age of 27 and after just three studio albums, Lawrence has already racked up enough number-one and top-10 singles to justify a greatest-hits package. Instead of simply recycling those singles, he decided to rerecord them as a live album. The usual approach to making a live album is to pick one particular concert at random, tape the show and accept the results, good or bad. Instead, Lawrence built a portable studio in his tour bus, recording every show and having his musicians listen to the tapes so they could hear what was working and what wasn't. As a result, the band, nicknamed Little Elvis, refined the arrangements and eliminated the extra fuss and clutter which are the biggest sins of live music. The 10 songs on "Live" are taken from several concerts at the end of that process, and they boast a no-frills approach which allows the band to push Lawrence hard without getting in his way.--Geoffrey Himes

One thing that will hit you quickly about Jeremy Camp's Live Unplugged is the number of radio hits the 24-year-old has already chalked up. Ten of the 11 tracks on this release were penned by Camp and nearly every one has reached the top, if not next to the top, of the Christian radio charts. It's been an amazing ride for Camp and he capably displays his career highlights here in a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. He plays it safe with basic arrangements throughout, but you will hear some nice piano touches by Justin Glasco on "Right Here" and "Empty Me." The addition of the Nashville String Machine is also used well on "My Desire," which may be the best track on the release. Along with Glasco's piano accompaniment, Camp delivers powerfully and emotionally here and maybe even surpasses the song's original version. Camp also shines bright on "Take You Back," "Stay," and "This Man." Kudos also go out to Camp's wife Adrienne (who used to lead The Benjamin Gate) for some fine backing vocals. Granted, there are a few blemishes such as the cheesy vamp at the end of "Walk By Faith," a slower-than-it-should- be version of "I Still Believe," and the head-scratching cover of Tim Hughes' "Beautiful One." But why major on the minors? Live Unplugged is a worthy effort and a nice inclusion to any Camp fan's collection. --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!.......2006-09-20

This is a brilliant CD....The songs are naked and quiet. It's a true worship CD and one for the quiet time with God. The song "Beautiful One" is written by Tim Hughes from Watford, England and it's sung slightly different to the way he does it...but awesome none the less. The DVD is really great too and when watching it I felt like I was in the audience. Highly recommended! A+

4 out of 5 stars Agree with most everything.............2006-08-18

Let me say that I agree with almost everything positive expressed by others already. I'll just round out the comments a bit by commenting a little on the technical nature of this DVD. I found the camera work a bit distracting. For my tastes there were too many quickly moving camera angles. Made it hard to focus on the guy singing the music - like you would at a concert. There was also a lot of moving between B&W, out-of-focus, introduction of scratches/spots to replicate damaged film, graininess, etc. Seemed like the post production people wanted to use all the toys in the digital editing toolbox. The soundtrack is also only in stereo. Not bad, in fact, very good but certainly not up to the DD 5.1 standards of other DVD's such as the Eagles. So yes, it's very good but not quite 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Ministers to my heart.......2006-07-03

Let me preface this review by saying that I felt for some time that Jeremy Camp was losing his edge, and that his first CD, Stay, was as good as it would get for Jeremy. He released Carried Me, a worship CD, on which some of the songs are remakes of other artists' work, and one song is even carried over from Stay! Then came Restored, which to me sounded a lot like Stay, but without some of the edginess. I hesitated to buy this acoustic compilation of songs from his past 3 releases.

However, new renditions of faster songs "Understand" and "Stay" among others made this CD worth purchasing. Much of the music is slow and stripped down, but still elaborate and pleasing to the ear. The slower tempo brings greater emphasis to lyrics that are, in my opinion, second-to-none (except perhaps Todd Agnew) in quality and genuineness. The concert on CD plays really well from start to finish. Song selection and order were well done.

The DVD component of this release is one that I figured I might watch once and then let sit on my shelf. However, the camera work during the concert is magnificent! Furthermore, Jeremy intimately shares from personal experience with his audience between songs, and those words really ministered to my heart. His life is one that you will hear about and be encouraged. You also get to see Jeremy's sense of humour come through in some of what he shares. Finally, be sure to check out the music video for "Take You Back." I never really cared for this song when I heard it on his Restored CD, but watching the video for the song (which shows a modern telling of the Prodigal Son story) touched my heart and brought me to tears.

This CD/DVD release comes highly recommended for Jeremy Camp fans, and for anyone who enjoys good music and being encouraged by the testimonies of other Christians.

5 out of 5 stars Some of Camp's Best , With Bonus DVD Insights..........2006-06-08

Camp's voice has a hint of rich masculine edge that's modern and youthful, yet the songs are slow, which should please adult contemporary/ballad fans. The CD takes 3 or so of the best songs from each of Camp's CDs and performs them unplugged (piano, guitars, drums, strings) and live, in a setting that the accompanying DVD shows is one of candlelit intimacy, with Camp sharing personal testimony that makes clear what I always wondered about: how can such a young guy sing about God's faithfulness in trials with such matured-by-life authenticity? Camp explains (on the DVD not CD) that some of his songs were birthed out of the pain of his first wife's unexpected death early in their marriage. My favorite, "I Still Believe" is an expression of Job-like faith (thank you Jeremy Camp--it ministered to me during what turned out to be a temporary blindness: "Even when I cannot see I still believe!") Also great is "Empty Me," a toughly tender song about surrendering oneself to God's refining fire.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny.......2006-03-02

The songs are beautiful and the DVD is great! You can really see how much he's grown since the "In 24" DVD. The in-between songs part of the concert (DVD-only) is wonderful.

Unplugged albums are frequently corny, but this was an important artistic move for Dylan in 1995, when many fans had given up on his incomprehensible singing and lackluster concerts. With sympathetic backup musicians, including organist Brendan O'Brien and guitarist John Jackson, Dylan returns the coherence to his originals ("All Along the Watchtower," "The Times They Are A-Changin'," "Desolation Row," "Like a Rolling Stone") and rearranges them just enough to freshen their sound. The previously unreleased "Dignity" is one of Dylan's best songs this decade, and it fits nicely with the rickety versions of "John Brown" and the finale, "With God On Our Side." --Steve Knopper

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Live Dylan Performance of his Classics.......2006-03-21

'Unplugged' does not quite match your expectations if, as I did, you are looking forward to Dylan doing an entirely acoustic version of some of his most famous compositions. At its heart, it is simply Dylan performing nine of his most famous compositions with an amplified backup band, plus 'Shooting Star' and 'Dignity' which are not that familiar to me.

Now any performance of Bob Dylan material, especially by Bob Dylan, is not to be overlooked, but there is a lot of overlap here, if you already own Dylan's albums up through 'John Wesley Hardin'. In a sense, Dylan is doing covers of his own classic stuff. And, in many cases, the covers are different, but not necessarily better than the originals. 'All Along the Watchtower', for example, is clearly not as good as the original, and it is not even quite as good as the great cover done by Jimi Hendrix, but it's still Dylan, so it's a very respectable and interesting collection, just a bit more interesting than a 'Best of' collection of original recordings.

4 out of 5 stars SORRY, ITS NOT EXCELLENT.......2005-09-28

Theres something not right here and I don't know what it is exctly but; WHY THE HELL? TOMBSTONE BLUES? I wasn't happy with this butchering of one of my faves the last time I heard it. Listen, I have a hard time saying anything bad about my man BOB DYLAN, but there is so much better stuff than this CD.
DYLAN was great fun to watch when he did this special for MTV, but admit it, didn't you think it was all over for him when this initially aired? I mean yeah, he was smiling, and he was getting down with the audience, but didn't you think he was one away from the grave? I don't know man, I really hate to say it, this guys my hero. He ultimatley proved he was about to KICK SOME ASS in a year or two and he still is today, but in 1994 it wasn't happening. This is not a great CD. PUT OUT A LIVE CD OF THE LAST THREE OR FOUR YEARS (2002-2005) AND I'LL BE ALL OVER IT! This package gets four stars cuz its DYLAN and I do like the JOHN BROWN rendition; its not an essential or anything, but is pretty cool.

BOB DYLAN; NO DISRESPECT!!!!! KEEP ROCKIN, I'LL BE THERE NEXT TIME YOU COME AROUND!!!!

4 out of 5 stars God forbid listening to the lyrics.......2005-07-14

I love this album, Bob plays all the classics in acoustic form and nails each one. For those who tell you his voice is not up to par, well hear this, I don't listen to Bob Dylan for his voice. Though I love it (all the raspiness and inflection), god forbid you actually listen to the words in the song. That's not what he's famous for or anything.

Another thing, to those who say the Byrds of Peter, Paul and Mary's versions of Dylan's songs are better. You are shallow and have no soul. The only reason those songs made it was due to the way they were written not the damn pretty voices and harmony those sell outs used. By the way, are those groups still around? Didn't think so.

I saw Dylan in concert two years ago and though his voice is ultra-haggard, the inflection and passion is still there. End of Story. Buy this album if you like lyrics and songs not pretty voices.

5 out of 5 stars a terrific document of well arranged Dylan classics.......2005-05-05

all these songs have the life breathed back into them, and though Dylan has certainly gotten older, he hasn't lost his edginess as a performer. His songs are still challenging and poetic, and sound better then they have in years thanks to the all-star support he gets on this. a terrific addition to any Dylan collection, with hard edged classics getting a new and improved treatment. All I can say is, it certainly took awhile!

5 out of 5 stars "Vomitific"(Dylan's term).......2004-06-08

I'm not one to get too nostalgic and linger in the past because the present is much to exciting However every now and again I listen to some Dylan. There is something to be said for longevity. This outing from 1995 finds Dylan in a loose mood with a fine nasal vocal tone that ducks and peeks while his strong lyrics jab and punch your sensibilities leaving your brain feeling like silly putty. Created for the superlative accoustic MTV series, Dylan is right at home with his folksy pre-electric roots. His harmonica playing adds luster to the folksy sound. He displays an impassioned vocal range that you will either hate or love but you have to give him his props for his poignant songwritting. Actually he is singing on "Knockin on Heaven's Door"in a very uncharacteristic style that indicates he can actually carry a tune! More at home in his delivery of barely understandable slurring and distorting in his vocal phrasing is more the norm on this disc. This cat was the original white rapper sans urban beats. His poetical lyricism is superb. This collection of songs are timely some 35+ years later. Of particular interest is "John Brown" about the soldier who goes off to war and sees the enemy "whose face looks just like mine" and returns to see his mom after being wounded . In these days that finds our country once again at war the words, reality and horror of war are very relevant. "Desolation Row" is one of those classic Dylan songs that paints surreal imagery with words that still reads like a modern epic tour de force. There are several other songs from the excellent 1965 "Highway 61 Revisted" including the unofficial 60's anthem "Like a Rolling Stone" that begs the question "how does it feel to be without a home, like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone"? Further along in the song Dylan states, "You said you'd never compromise, with the mystery tramp, but now you realize he's not selling any alibis as you stare into the vacum of his eyes and ask do you want to make deal"? These lyrics might make baby boomers choke on their lattes and cause them to wreck their Lexus suv's now days as they reflect on their rebellious youth. Another "Highway 61" song is the mind blowing "Tombstone Blues" with which he opens the set as he makes reference to the everything from the "commander in chief, John the Baptist, Gaileo, MaRainey, Beethoven, Deliah and the Phiilistines." In these times of world trouble and tension, heightened by terrorism, Dylan's exploration of war is very timely today. He ends his song and set with the words"If God's on our side He'll stop the next war." Even though "The Times TheY Are A-Changin'" some concerns remain the the same. This is as important music today as it was originally in the 60's and when this 1995 MTV version was released. Buy it especially if you don't have any Dylan, it is a nice introduction to the poets music. Every song is a winner.

4 out of 5 stars Jeff As You Probably Never Knew Him.......2007-01-09

I bought this CD about a week after I saw him perform live. No condemnation, but stage presence and audience interaction don't quite make it to a plastic disc. His "whiskey voice" (no aspersions meant), great guitar picking, and subtle humor make for great listening. But listen in the safety of your own abode or a parked motor vehicle (driving and listening to this puts you and others at risk when you can't help laughing). Support for small-town local theater (the Purple Rose) is added incentive.

4 out of 5 stars Anything William Shatner can do, Jeff Daniels can do better (in a desperate attempt to raise money).......2006-08-20

This week I went to see Jeff Daniels in concert at the Big Tent Chautauqua south of Bayfield, Wisconsin. The actor, best known for his roles in "Terms of Endearment" and "Dumb & Dumber" (although the Jeff Daniel's movies on my shelf would be "The Purple Rose of Cairo," "Gettysburg," and "Gods & Generals"), has been writing songs for over thirty years, never professing to be a professional singer-song writer but insisting instead that his songs are his diary. If Jeff Daniels makes a movie where Clint Eastwood blows him away in the end, then he writes a song ("The Dirty Harry Blues"). If he goes out on a first date with the woman who will become his wife, then he writes a song about that too ("Kathy"). You will find that those two examples pretty much encompass the complete spectrum of Daniels' songwriting skills because the first is funny and the second is sweet.

As the title clearly indicates, "Live and Unplugged to Benefit the Purple Rose Theatre" was recorded live at the Purple Rose Theater in Chelsea, Michigan in December and January 2003-2004 with all proceeds from the CD going to the theater. Daniels is the founder and executive director of the not-for-profit regional professional theater company and was coaxed into being pushed on stage with his guitar to see if people would be willing to pay to see what would happen next. Daniels initially dismissed the idea as something William Shatner would do (think "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" rather than "Star Trek"), which engendered the song "If William Shatner Can, I Can Too" that starts off this enjoyable album of a dozen songs.

The most out of date song is obviously "The Lifelong Tiger Fan Blues," seeing as how Detroit has the best record in baseball this season. Daniels sings about his marriage in "If I Weren't So Stupid, You Wouldn't Be So Smart," and was motivated by his objection to a sign in a bar to come up with "You Can Drink An Ugly Girl Pretty." An encounter with a "State Trooper" engenders a song as well. On the more serious side Daniels has a song about his parents ("Momma Never Left Her Oldest Boy Alone"), his first car ("Blue Valiant"), and a cover of a song about the state in which he lives ("Michigan, My Michigan," the unofficial state song of Michigan, with lyrics written to the tune of "Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum" by Winifred Lee Brent after the Battle of Fredericksburg during the Civil War). The one song that does not really fit into those categories would be "If You're Comin'," an anti-war song written in opposition to "those who wrap their reasons for going to war around a higher power."

Vehicle," which makes perfect sense since the true story is clearly inspired by Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant." That is one of the songs that have clearly evolved over the years (Daniels updates "If William Shatner Can, I Can Too" nowadays to make a palatable hit on Paris Hilton, admittedly an easy target but a most deserving one as well). Having catalogued his repertoire, Daniels is also able to tell us when and where he wrote each of these songs, and in the back of the booklet makes some brief comments on each of the songs.

It really is time for Daniels to cut another CD, because his repertoire is considerably more than the dozen tracks presented here. He only did four of these tracks in his concert ("If William Shatner Can, I Can Too," "The Dirty Harry Blues," "If You're Coming," and "Recreational Vehicle"), and there were easily that many songs that I heard Daniels perform live that I would like to be able to hear again whenever I want. There were several times during the evening's performance that my sides hurt I was laughing so hard, and half of the songs that had us in hysterics are not to be found here. I want those songs, Jeff.

3 out of 5 stars Worth a listen.......2005-10-01

This disc serves a number of purposes, all good. First of all, it's a sampler disc, giving you a taste of some music you might otherwise not hear. Secondly, acoustic versions (and live ones, for that matter) allow other interpretations by the original artists, which you seldom hear outside the concert venue. Overall, the quality and selections are good, and I got a chance to hear Henley do a cover of "Rain or Shine", which was worth the price of the disc.

2 out of 5 stars One good track.......2005-09-29

Ok - maybe two good tracks.

Stevie Ray Vaughan opens the album with a powerful voice and a 12 string accoustic. We miss you Stevie.

But for me the album is worth it for the blues version of Are You Gonna Go My Way by Lennie Kravitz.

Why not just download those tracks from iTunes.

5 out of 5 stars What a find.......2004-12-21

This is a must own CD for every lover of great acoustic music. Gail Davies has one of the purest country-folk voices ever. Her arrangements make great listening of standards such as Poison Love, It Ain't Me Babe, Ashes Of Love, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight and many others plus her own compositions and original hits such as Blue Heartache, Bucket To The South, et.al. As live albums go this is one of the best. The band and backup vocals are exceptional. The tempo and energy make this really good listening.

5 out of 5 stars A truly great live album.......2003-10-30

The Station Inn is a great place to hear live music in Nashville, I have been there often. Wish I had been there when they recorded this CD. Gail Davies and her band does a superb job and the recording quality is excellent. That lady has a set of pipes and she really shows them off on this one. Great songwriter, too, I understand. The CD is almost studio quality, Gail and the band making no mistakes, with tight arrangements and great integration of vocals and inststrumental breaks. You will enjoy this CD, trust me.

5 out of 5 stars TRUE COUNTRY ROYALTY!!.......2001-10-11

This live CD is one of the best things to come out of country music in a long time. It is evident that Davies and her band had a blast recording this CD. They perform eighteen of their favorites in this collection which includes several tunes written by Bob Dylan (It Ain't Me Babe, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, and Tomorrow Is A Long Time). There is also the Louvin Brothers classic "Ae You Teasing Me," which was a big hit for Carl Smith in 1952 and the top ten "Round The Clock Lovin," which was co-written by K.T. Oslin. Other songs worth mentioning are "Right By You," "The Fox Hunting Song/Grandma's Song," "Bucket To The South," and the comical "Wedding Invitation." Buy a copy of this CD, and if you get a chance to see her live, don't miss it!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2003-11-24

I found this CD more satisfying than the previous two. I play it constantly while driving. I have no idea how I came to this CD. Maybe one of my daughters bought it for me. I prefer the renditions of Mozart, Beethoven and Dorsey himself to those of Bach (personal taste, I guess). By the way, I found tracks 20 and 21 on this CD, "Dimensions" and "Birthday Dimensions," the best of the lot. Both were composed by Dorsey. He should do more. I am waiting for his next CD. Dorsey is a gift to our generation, as much as Beethoven was a gift to people of another time.

1 out of 5 stars Make him stop!.......2002-01-09

I can't believe this guy even has a recording contract. He is completely without talent and just plays a bunch of machines that any 15 year old with an IQ of 80 can operate. This music is some kind of bad joke.

    2 out of 5 stars Busted is a bust.......2001-01-06

This CD is a big disappointment after hearing BACHBUSTERS and BEETHOVEN OR BUST. It contains duplicates from these previous albums and a lot of other music that isn't especially pleasant to listen to and has no central theme. The Mozart additions are not very exciting and sound a lot like cuts from the previous albums. I had hoped to hear some great Mozart stuff on this disc, but it isn't there.

3 out of 5 stars I like River Deep, Mountain High!.......2002-11-04

Never heard Annie Sing "River Deep, Mountain High" before.

As a matter of fact, I've never seen or heard Annie do her LIVE MTV UNPLUGGED special.

I think that "RDMH" sung live by Annie is amusing! She's got the voice to do it, but at the time she did that show, and when the single was made, she was pregnant. It took a toll on her voice. She still was able to belt it out though.
It's always nice to hear an artist do an MTV Live Unplugged show. It shows how much versatile an artist and their band is.

I'm not too crazy about hearing Annie singing "Here comes the rain again" and "It's alright, baby's coming back" live, because I already have the Eurythmics live double concert cd.

Anyhow, owning this single is fine. It adds to my Annie Lennox collection. I do like the studio, single version of "Walking on broken glass". Most of the time, single versions of songs are slightly different than the album version. I will have to listen to both versions of WOBG to see if there is much of a difference there.

The biggest complaint I have, is that this cd came out way too late. Would have been nice to get it at the time it was released!

    Hope this review helped you.

    5 out of 5 stars A Classic Pop Single.......2001-11-05

Classy and soulful. Two adjectives that describe this single re-release of Annie Lennox's 1992 hit "Walking On Broken Glass". One of the hits from her solo debut "Diva", the song is contained here in 2 versions - a single version, and a live version recorded for MTV Unplugged during the summer of '92. Three other live cuts from that show are present here, all three with Annie's rich and alluring white soul voice. Two being choice Eurythmics tunes - "It's Alright (Baby's Comin' Back)" and "Here Comes The Rain Again". The high point for me though, is the cover of the classic "River Deep, Mountain High" - a tune she sounds great on. If you missed this single the first time, follow my advice and pick it up on it's second go round like I did.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best unplugged albums ever........2004-01-05

This is a great album; too bad it is too expensive (import) and hard to find; Doctor Doctor, Anytime and We Believe in Love are the best songs. I would recommend all MSG fans to make an effort and buy this album.

4 out of 5 stars DIFFERENT FOR M.S.G.......2000-12-08

THIS IS DIFFERENT FOR SCHENKER,IT`S VERY MELLOW BUT ALSO IT`S VERY GOOD.THIS IS LIKE A UNPLUGGED GREATEST HITS WITH ROBIN MCAULEY PLUS SOME OLD U.F.O. SONGS THROW IN.MCAULEY IS PROBABLY THE BEST SINGER MICHAEL SCHENKER HAS EVER WORK WITH AS FAR AS HIS RANGE GOES,EVEN THOUGH THIS WAS A BIG DEPARTURE FROM HIS EARLY WORK.WITH THIS HE KIND OF VENTURED INTO POWER POP,BUT IT STILL HAS A HARD EDGE.IT`S JUST TO BAD THAT THIS IS AN IMPORT,BECAUSE MOST PEOPLE WON`T PAY 30 DOLLARS FOR ONE CD,BUT THIS IS A VERY GOOD LISTEN.MUST HAVE FOR ANY M.S.G. FAN.
