If one were forced to choose a single Garth Brooks album to own, it should be his first. Believe it or not, Brooks once studied at the feet of singer/songwriter Bob Childers, an obscure Oklahoman who has written songs more akin to Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt than to the pop country Brooks would later make his cash cow. This debut has a vision of careful songwriting and honky-tonk traditions Brooks never fully recaptured. "If Tomorrow Never Comes" is the best thing he's ever recorded, a gorgeous country tune recalling Lefty Frizzell and Charlie Rich. Had he continued to make such strong singles, Brooks's artistic stature might have equaled his stock portfolio. It never happened, but that shouldn't stop us from recognizing country music this solid. --Roy Kasten

Amazon.com
Unlikely as it might seem some 70 million in total album sales later, Garth Brooks's self-titled debut was widely ignored at the time of its 1989 release. Most of the program doesn't wander far from the new-traditionalist country pattern established in the '80s by George Strait. Songs such as "If Tomorrow Never Comes," "Every Time That It Rains," and "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)" have an understated charm that stands in appealing contrast to the self-conscious grandiosity of much of Brooks's later work. But it was the least traditional tune on the album, the melodramatic ballad "The Dance," that catapulted Brooks to superstardom. The rest, as they say, is history. --Rick Mitchell

In 1991 Garth Brooks did what no other country artist before had: he broke the million-seller mark with No Fences and solidified a string of No. 1 hits that also conquered the pop market. Fourteen of his No. 1s are here, including the rowdy working-class anthem "Friends in Low Places" and the signature power ballad "The Dance." All of Brooks's albums have their share of filler, but not this one. Even the toughest cynic will admire Brooks's charisma and deadly mastery of pop and country hooks. --Roy Kasten

4 out of 5 stars The Master Of Self-Promotion.......2007-01-03

Love him or hate him, you have to admit that Garth Brooks knew how to sell himself to the masses. His career started out promising enough with his self-titled debut which included two of my personal favorites, "The Dance" and "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)." He followed that with the harbinger of things to follow, "No Fences," which included the tune that really put him on the map, the wonderful "Thunder Rolls," and the bar-friendly "Friends In Low Places." From there, Brooks' tunes took less of a personal and genuine turn and evolved into a hybrid of "what sells the most" and "what sounds most genuine to those outside of Country music."

Starting with the album, "Ropin' The Wind," Brooks began to crank out commercially successful, yet lyrically insignificant songs like "American Honky-Tonk Bar Association" and "Rodeo." He managed to fire off a couple of solid, meaningful songs like "Standing Outside The Fire" and "River," but most of his songs were fluff like "Ain't Goin' Down (Till The Sun Comes Up."

All of the aforementioned songs are available on "The Hits." It, much like every album after his first two, was also created to generate high, fast, and record-setting sales marks by having it put out in limited release. However, it's a very significant album in Country music history since it catalogs the first half of a career full of great promise (songs like "The Dance") and a huge ego (the forced-upon social tune, "We Shall Be Free"). It also signalled a turning point in Brooks' career with the release of even heavier commercial works such as "Fresh Horses" and "Sevens" after "The Hits" hit the store shelves.

Brooks' ego finally caught up with him with the abysmal "Chris Gaines" era. He suffered a huge commercial blow due to this experiment and he has never regained his status as a commercial star. However, this knock to the ego did result in the decent "Scarecrow" album, yet nothing has added up to the success of his pre-"The Hits" albums.

Brooks forever changed the face of Country music. He helped expose the world outside of Country music to great neo-traditional artists such as Alan Jackson and Vince Gill. He also helped pave the way for fluff acts like Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney, who've managed to master Brooks' old formula of self-promotion.

From a blah cover like "Shameless" to a wonderful cover of "Callin' Baton Rouge," and every original hit and miss in between, "The Hits" is a crucial album to Country music history since it is a gathering of the best and worst of a true Country "performer" who single-handedly saved and destroyed real Country music.

5 out of 5 stars I Love This CD.......2006-06-09

I absolutely loved this CD from Garth Brooks. Almost every song of his that I like is on this CD, and I can honestly listen to the whole CD and like all of the songs on it. This CD is a perfect mix of his classic songs, and I would definitly recommend this CD to anyone who is a Garth Brooks fan.

5 out of 5 stars a must-own.......2006-06-03

Anyone who likes Garth Brooks will love this album. It contains many of his best songs, including "The Dance," "The River," "Unanswered Prayers," "Callin' Baton Rogue," "Standing Outside the Fire," and "Friends in Low Places." It is a perfect showcase for his music, and I thoroughly enjoy listening to it whenever I do. Even if you are not a fan, you will still enjoy it due to the perfection of song selection. If you can find it anywhere, get it. You will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars The King Of Music!.......2006-01-14

Garth Brooks is the greatest recording artist in music history. While some claim he never recaptured the magic of his first five albums, I disagree, "Sevens" was one of the best country albums of all time (released in 1997), and "Fresh Horses" was also pretty neat. (Tracks from these albums aren't included here).

If you can pick up a copy of "The Hit's" and haven't got his first five albums, then it may be well worth it, however copies are now selling for up to $100 to collectors, so it might be better off just buying his first five CD's, which are Garth Brooks (1989), No Fences (1990), Ropin' The Wind (1991), The Chase (1992) and In Pieces (1993), all of which are classic albums.

After you get them (or this hit's collection) and find yourself wanting more Garth, get Fresh Horses (1995) and Sevens (1997), Garth also has two Christmas albums, "Beyond The Season" and "The Magic Of Christmas", that are also worth getting.

My favorite Garth songs, at least from this hit's collection, are "Friends In Low Places", "Standing Outside The Fire", "American Honky Tonk Bar Association" and "The River".

Garth brought a new edge to country throughout the '90s, with a great live show and pop-rock influences, but he never forgot his home.

Another stand out cut is the gospel-folk tinged "We Shall Be Free", which is an even better statement that John Lennon's "Imagine".

This is the greatest of greatest hit's albums!

Garth Brooks's obvious inspirations for Double Live were all those 1970s double-album concert recordings from album-oriented-rock influences such as Bob Seger, Kiss, and Peter Frampton. The difference between those classic-rock sets and this one is that Live Bullet, Alive and Frampton Comes Alive all helped to rescue their respective artists from virtual obscurity. Coming as they did from still largely unknown commodities, they seemingly promised nothing yet delivered everything. Already a superstar, Brooks merely promises more of the same on Double Live. He delivers, too. "You guys already know what's coming, don't you?" he asks at one point. "And you know what? You're right." Loaded with 22 hits (and three new tunes) recorded in any number of unnamed cities (and studios, too) over the past seven years, Double Live finds Brooks exaggerating his most irritating tics--the Wynnona-ish growls, the ridiculously elastic twang--in the process ruining even his finest songs. Still, even those convinced that Brooks is the Garth Vader of country music will be brought to pause as tens of thousands of admiring fans sing earnestly along to "The Dance" or "Unanswered Prayers," and scream their way through the anthem "Friends in Low Places." (Please note: You may receive any one of the album's six different covers.) --David Cantwell

1 out of 5 stars Crass Product, Brooks becomes a sell out.......2007-04-22

After Garth Brooks recorded the six albums that made him a superstar, he began to show himself much more a businessman than a genuine country star concerned with the artistic integrity of the music itself, and this album was one of the first indicators of his corporate attitude. Around this same time, Brooks would make a deal with Wal-mart to package his first six albums into a box set, with each album given one bonus song, and which was only around 30 bucks. Naturally, this is dirt cheap, to pick up six albums for only thirty dollars.

The real reason why he was doing this? Because he was chasing The Beatles' record of moving the most units and records of any band in the world to become the biggest selling musical artist ever. He had already shattered Billy Joel's status as most popular male vocalist ever according to record sales. Because each disc counted for one unit, this box set would help him greatly in that chase to topple The Beatles, though this would be done only by inflated sales totals. That is what a sellout Brooks became.

Despite the rather dubious intentions of Garth's first box set, nowhere else does Brooks so blatantly sound like he's selling product. From the unimaginative title (DOUBLE LIVE, which is exactly what it is), to the various hodge podge of different songs from different concerts (none of the performances are dated or noted what concert they are drawn from), to the uninspired set list, Brooks just sounds like he's not playing the music because he loves it or it documents a historic, well known performance, but because he knows anything he puts out will sell. DOUBLE LIVE sounds like patchwork, because it is not a real concert, but rather assembled from various dates and venues.

Most great live albums give us a rather idiosyncratic tour of the respective artist's catalogue. DOUBLE LIVE doesn't do that, or examine some of the lesser known songs of Brooks' catalogue. Rather, it plays exactly like a greatest hits album, only with live tracks, and sounds like Brooks was trying to sequence the record like a fantasy concert where you only hear the songs you want, or more likely when a causal fan is looking at it in Wal-Mart (because he won't sell it anywhere else), the fan realises it has all the songs he knows on the radio so he know it must be good.

Like most other greatest hits packages (which is really all this album is, albeit live), DOUBLE LIVE also includes three new cuts, to entice the Garth Brooks completest (sad that there is such a thing) out to buy this album.

Everything is professional and played to perfection - to the point where it is distracting. In the rush of great performances, occasionally things are out of tune, mistakes are made, etc, but a great concert can overcome these difficulties and still retain the emotional and powerful elements of the music. Not so here. Everything is so polished, and there are a few moments that one suspects studio overdubbing on the original live tapes. Actually, in several songs there is quite clearly studio work done.

In another effort to move more units in pursuit of overthrowing The Beatles (sorry Garth, they will always be much cooler than you), Garth Brooks also put the album out with six different covers, so the `collectors' will try to purchase all six editions.

Even during some of the songs, Brooks acknowledges it is just product. As noted in the Amazon editorial, Brooks says to the audience at one point that they know what's coming. During the live version of "The Thunder Rolls", he asks what a double live album would be without the missing verse of "Thunder Rolls", and then goes on to sing it.

For all that, DOUBLE LIVE is entertaining, and I can see why people enjoy it. But ultimately the songs on the live album don't really differ from the album version that much. That just makes the live album boring. The most entertaining thing Garth Brooks did during the late 1990s was record the, admittedly misguided and confusing, ... IN THE LIFE OF CHRIS GAINS. There he is entertaining his rock and roll fantasies, and while it's not the greatest music around, it is one of his most bizarrely fascinating records.

What is really offensive is Brooks' business tactics. Brooks' underhanded, sleight of hand pursuit of chasing The Beatles' record with inflated sales total, and feeling he is just trying to sell product, not make great music, makes DOUBLE LIVE give a very sour taste for knowing listener.

Bottom line: it's a decent sounding record (it should be, with all the studio overdubs), but give this one a miss. The Beatles got their status as best-selling artist of all time because they're fantastic musicians and rock and roll royalty. They did it by making great music, not by cheap marketing, making blatant product, or trying to artificially inflate their sales totals.

3 out of 5 stars Is Great!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-11

I like the live is great to hear Garth Brooks again I haven't heard he's voice an a long time!

5 out of 5 stars Garth Brooks comes alive!.......2007-03-26

Garth Brooks comes alive and kicks rear with this possibly sold-out concert. Being a longtime Billy Joel fan,I'd say Brooks' best recording is Joel's SHAMELESS. In fact, that song is from one of Joel's Grammy-winning albums,1989's STORM FRONT. The other songs rock! Fans of Brooks are also fans of Tim McGraw,Alan Jackson,Toby Keith,Travis Tritt and Kenny Chesney.

4 out of 5 stars Garth Delivers !!.......2007-03-05

Love him or Loathe him, you just cannot take away from the fact that this guy delivers and delivers big-time when playing 'live'. This album manages to capture the electricity, the chemistry and interation with the crowd, the real feeling of regret of not actually being there. A fantastic 'live' album covering all of the hits and more 'Thunder Rolls', 'Pina Colada', 'To Make You feel My Love'..they're all here...Even 10yrs on, the songs still connect and you get reminded all over again of just how good this guy is...Enjoy!!

Though it follows a standard movie formula and predictable plot twists, the film Hope Floats is saved in part by the above-average performance of Sandra Bullock, portraying a separated woman who finds her way back to her hometown in Texas, daughter in tow. The soundtrack seems to follow in due course, a collection of country and rock (thanks to the Rolling Stones) acts adding shades of twang to songs that, for the most part, all sound fairly familiar. The duds of the bunch, Bryan Adams's "When You Love Someone" and Sheryl Crow's "In Need," are saved in large part by some surprise keepers, courtesy of Garth Brooks, the Mavericks, and Gillian Welch. The covers are interesting enough. Brooks's take on Dylan's "To Make You Feel My Love" is modest and pithy and a far cry from the overblown Trisha Yearwood performance of the same tune that codas the collection. --Jason Verlinde

This was not the soundtrack that I wanted. I wanted the soundtrack with the Garth Brooks song on it and some of the other more recognizable songs from the movie - not instrumentals. I was really disappointed and will continue to try to find the soundtrack I want.

5 out of 5 stars A great album........2005-04-06

Just wanted to let anyone reading these reviews that the review by MusicFan posted September 2, 2003 about how misleading these reviews are, is completely wrong!! Musicfan is talking about a totally different CD. He/She wanted the album with "various artists" but bought the wrong one containing the "original movie soundtrack". This is a great album and worth every cent. Any of the reviews that refer to this album with 11 tracks is in the wrong place. The "various artists" album has 13 tracks. Just trying to clear up some confusion!

Brooks's third album, 1991's Ropin' the Wind, found him distancing himself further from the new-traditionalist hat-pack. The album's centerpiece was an all-stops-out Southern-rock cover of Billy Joel's "Shameless." Another hit single, "Rodeo," boasted a slinky Creedence-style groove. Brooks's propensity for sentimental folk-pop clichés surfaced on the ballads "What She's Doing Now" and "The River." But "We Bury the Hatchet" and "Papa Loved Mama" were tongue-in-cheek attempts at honky-tonk and truck-drivin' boogie. While Brooks subsequently has been criticized for putting a cowboy hat atop rock & roll and calling it country, these tracks sound more like vintage Ernest Tubb next to some of today's Nashville Pop-tarts. --Rick Mitchell

5 out of 5 stars Best!!!!!.......2007-03-08

This is by far the best Garth Brooks album he's ever made!!! I remember it when I was younger and I still play it over and over!!! It the best!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-04-04

I'm not a particular country fan, but not only does this CD have great sentimental value for me, but it truly has great songs! There's not one I don't like. Still, I've tried to put them in the order that I like them best. Of course, that's difficult and some may be interchangeable depending on my mood.

Burning Bridges--Beautiful song.
Shameless--So great.
What She's Doing Now--Also beautiful.
In Lonesome Dove--Ditto.
The River--Such a nice song.
Papa Loved Mama--Another story song! Love those.
We Bury the Hatchet--Fun.
Cold Shoulder--Very nice song.
Against the Grain--Ditto!
Rodeo--Umm, ditto!
Which One of Them--I didn't remember this song from the first time I owned the album, but it's good.

So basically, it's an all-around winner! Good for listening to continuously.

5 out of 5 stars "You know a dream is like a river.".......2005-12-30

"Ropin' the Wind" was Garth Brook's third record, after "Garth Brooks" and "No Fences" made him a superstar. The album debuted on the pop charts at #1: the first time for a country artist. It would go on to sell a staggering 14 million copies in the U.S. alone - only 25 records have ever sold more, including Garth's own "No Fences" (16 million) and "Double Live" (15 million).

Garth pulled five hits from "Ropin' the Wind," starting with the ramped up "Rodeo." The single did fairly well, peaking at #3 on the country chart, although it ended Garth's string of five #1 songs. Up next was the pop-rock `Shameless" - a remake of a Billy Joel song from "Storm Front." The song hit #1 for two weeks and became a fan favorite at Garth's concerts. The third single was the biggest - the rich and smooth ballad "What She's Doing Now" (#1 for 3 weeks). Garth's voice has never sounded better than it does here. The most countrified song was released next: the playful "Papa Loved Mama" (#3). It was one of my favorites at the time, although it sounds a bit forced now.

The final single was "The River" (#1 for 1 week). The song perfectly encapsulated Garth's gradual turn from traditional country to the more adult contemporary sound in which he would subsequently specialize. The song would fit nicely on any James Taylor CD, or maybe even something by Dan Fogelberg. It's not a bad song, but it's rather tame and feels like 80s pop. Although the CD is glossier than his prior releases, it's top-notch all the way - it WAS country music at the time. I have all of Garth's CDs; "Ropin' the Wind" is his last CD with a more a more traditional country feel and not coincidentally also his last release that really enthralled me.

5 out of 5 stars Another classic from Garth.......2005-08-31

The person who compiled Garth's hits compilation (sadly now long out of print) clearly loved this album. Six of the tracks from this album were included, making it the best-represented album on that compilation. I can well understand the compiler's enthusiasm although there are some of Garth's other albums that I rate even higher.

The six tracks that featured on the hits collection have some interesting stories. One of them (Burning bridges) became a Spanish hit. Another (Shameless) is a cover of a Billy Joel song that Garth recorded only after he learned that Billy wasn't going to release his own version as a single One of Garth's favorite songs here (Rodeo) began life in the early eighties as a slightly different song titled Miss Rodeo, intended for a female singe. None recorded it so Garth eventually recorded it with modified title and lyrics. Garth co-wrote a song (What he's doing now) for Crystal Gayle - it appeared on one of her albums (Ain't gonna worry) - before recording his own version with a gender-adapted title (What she's doing now) and lyrics. Perhaps the best song here (The river) is a song that Garth co-wrote with the brilliant but very under-appreciated Victoria Shaw, whose own albums never sold well enough to establish her own career as a singer. The other song to make the hits collection (Papa loves Mama) is just a fun song but it is superbly performed.

Of the tracks that didn't make the hits compilation, the opening track (Against the grain) is a brilliant up-tempo song that was surely considered for single release. There is an amusing song (We bury the hatchet) about problems with the neighbors. There's a very cleverly worded song (Cold shoulder) about the loneliness of a long-distance trucker - if you're not paying attention, you might think it's Garth's partner that has given him the cold shoulder - then again, perhaps she has. Garth also sings a wild west story (In lonesome dove).

This is an outstanding album from Garth. If you lovre Garth's music, you are likely to enjoy this album.

4 out of 5 stars Most Underrated Garth Album.......2005-07-18

This album may not be the best of Brook's albums, but it is definitely up there. Hits "What She's Doing Now" and "The River" are as good as any of his other hits. I especially like "What She's Doing Now." "Papa Loves Mama" is possibly the worst song Brooks has ever sang, but one rotten apple does not spoil the bunch. I did not "Shameless," but many people found it a refreshing addition to this album. And this is only the hits.

But what makes me declare this album worthwhile is not any of the hits but rather Garth Brook's greatest song he ever wrote and greatest song he ever sang: "In Lonesome Dove." It is a true country song and the lyrics are pure genius. There are few songs that I really, really, just love. "Love, Me" by Collin Raye is the best song ever, but this is in the top 25. Too bad it was never released so that it could earn its deserved respect.

This album is worth the purchase if you don't have it and you like Garth Brooks. Do not buy it if you do not like Garth; that song will not change your opinion.

No Fences captures Garth Brooks just after his initial success yet before superstardom. Though it includes "The Thunder Rolls," another of the pop-country power ballads he'd introduced with "The Dance," No Fences bounces mainly between impersonations--often catchy and engaging ones, but impersonations nonetheless. "Wild Horses" is straight-up George Strait, while "Two of a Kind" and "Friends in Low Places" are John Anderson and Hank Jr. respectively. The best moment, the Dan Fogleberg-like "Unanswered Prayers," relays a message either highly spiritual or hugely rationalized. Regardless, it succeeds because its delivery is earnest, sweet, and humble--something Garth wouldn't be for long. --David Cantwell

I got this CD out and played it and really like it again I like the song Unanswered prayers

3 out of 5 stars Half .......2006-02-15

I wanted to rate this latest release half, (three stars), because Pinoccio only has one woman to complete him right now. This is really starting to show through in his latest cd. The old stuff was FAR better. I love Garth's old stuff.
When Garth meets the other women he desperately needs in his life, and becomes "a real boy" - I will give Pinoccio five stars. I'm sure his music will improve then.
Isn't that what life's all about? Do a little memory dance through life, pat your wife on the head for being a good sport, and keep truckin until the next stop? What an ego! I am asking, because I am not as old as him yet, and I am still trying to learn.
His ex-wife may not be a glamorous singer, but she must be an amazing woman to devote her life towards his happiness.
I guess Hollywood will make a movie soon, and try to make her look evil or something.

5 out of 5 stars Review: Garth Brooks, No Fences.......2005-09-13

No Fences is one of the best albums that Garth Brooks has ever created. He managed to record an album that appealed not only to his normal country listeners, but the pop crowd as well. This is shown through the album's sales and numerous number one hit singles. The title of this album shows off Garth's ability to not be pinned down to any one type of music style. This is shown by contrasting "Friends in Low Places" with "Thunder Rolls". While "Friends in Low Places" is a fun and energetic song to be played in a local country bar, "Thunder Rolls" has a much more serious and somber tone because it is about a cheating husband.

While there is no question that Garth is a country artist (in fact many consider him to be THE country artist), he also tries to tie in other sounds from other genres into his music. This is evident in his number #1 single of all time, "Friends in Low Places". He combines his tried and true county sound with a lead guitar, piano, and a violin to create a catchy tune that almost anyone can enjoy.

The main reason Garth is as big an artist as he is because of his voice. He can make you cry and be overjoyed all with his voice in a matter of minutes. The song "Unanswered Prayers" is about how lucky he was to have his initial prayers of love unanswered, because it lead to him finding true love and his wife. While listening to the song, you cannot help but feel the passion that he does while he sings.

5 out of 5 stars Garth wins friends in many places.......2005-07-08

Country music changed forever in 1989, led by Clint Black with his hugely successful debut album that spawned several number one country hits. Garth started at the same time as Clint but his debut album, while also very successful, didn't do as well as Clint's album at the time. With his second album (this one), Garth took country music to a level of popularity never previously known and became its leading star for much of the nineties. Indeed, Garth outsold all pop singers in America for a few years. I don't know how many copies this particular album has sold but I know it passed the ten million mark long ago. I was one of the early purchasers but, brilliant as it is, I never expected it to become that popular.

The four big American hits are The thunder rolls, Two of a kind working on a full house, Friends in low places and Unanswered prayers. None of these songs made the UK charts. Garth was unable to reproduce his American success in Britain although he eventually made the UK top twenty with a song from a later album. Friends in low places is a classic lightweight drinking song that Mark Chesnutt recorded at around the same time. More dramatic and equally brilliant is The thunder rolls, about a woman waiting for a man to come home safely during a stormy night - he does but she realizes that he's been cheating. Another classic is Unanswered prayers, in which Garth shows his gratitude for not having his old prayers answered, preferring his wife to an old flame. Sadly, Garth and his wife eventually went their separate ways some years later. Two of a kind working on a full house uses a poker game analogy to describe a couple in love although it makes no mention of a family, which you might expect from the title

Quite apart from the hits, there are other great songs here including New way to fly (about people looking for love that lasts), Victim of the game (about cheating), Wild horses (about a man's love of rodeo), Same old story (about a one-sided love), Mr Blue (a cover of a fifties pop song) and Wolves (about rural hardship - this song is by the brilliant but obscure singer-songwriter Stephanie Davis).

If you enjoy Garth's music, you should definitely buy this album, which is a classic.

2 out of 5 stars Garth's Best .......2005-07-02

Garth Brooks is to Country what the Disco era Bee Gees are to Rock 'n' Roll: the music made pure pop drivel and/or a reflection of the lowest common denominator tastes of the market at the time. Garth is Country Lite and cutesified; which means that continuing the beer analogy, Garth is not merely Lite; he is also Lite without any trace of alcohol and way too much sugar and gawdily colored packaging. If, as Bono says, all other singers are sissies compared to Johnny Cash, then Garth, based on his choice of material more than his voice, is the biggest sissy who ever released a #1 Country album.

That said, No Fences is the best Garth album (of the first 5 he released; after that, I refused to bother giving a listen). That is so, I think, because, as David Cantwell says, the album is slightly more mature than the debut album but before the massive superstardom that allowed Garth to indulge all his apparently bad taste.

Even when he records something that in the hands of a real Country singer who exudes character, such as 'Friends in Low Places,' could be quite interesting, an astute listener will see in his mind's eye a picture of a freshly scrubbbed Mama's Boy donned with cowboy hat (like PB&J eating Leon on Andy Griffith) doing his best to sound tough and independant like his older brother, convincing only those who either wish to be duped or don't know any better.

Avoid this pop-Country tripe and purchase something worth hearing.

5 out of 5 stars A must have boxed set.......2007-01-10

I really like this collection of Garth Brooks music. I have heard most of his tracks through the years, but I have never been able to find any of his discs. I like all the discs in the box. My favorite is the double live disc. I always like a good concert album every now and then, and Brooks holds nothing back on this one. My favorite track is friends in low places. He really gets the audience involved with this one. I know he released a studio version of the track, but it was really just ment to be a live track. For you Brooks fans, there is also a dvd included in the box that includes a gallery of photos, and an interview with brooks along with live performances. A good bonus in my opinion. This is Brooks's gift to all his fans.

4 out of 5 stars excellent choice.......2006-06-03

This wasn't too bad a boxed set. While it contains a few of Garth's past albums (i.e. Scarecrow and Sevens), he could have done what he did on his past set and add a new song to each album. The Double Live CD adds another cover to your collection. I think the DVD in the set was a nice addition, as it includes a few of his videos and interviews. I think the Lost Sessions CD was also a nice touch. Just about any Garth fan will like this. Add it to your collection and soon.

5 out of 5 stars classic garth ! even the "new stuff" included is classic..........2006-04-11

Ok first you get 4 of Garth's past CDs. Sevens (5 star), Scarecrow (5 star), and Double Live (5 star). Basically going to walmart and getting the box set gets you these discs for free. If you have these cds already, they are probably worn out and you might need new copies anyway. Perfect way to get them right here! Then the big news here is "The Lost Sessions." Wow, what a breath of fresh air. This album is great. It has every type of Garth song you want to hear. The fun stuff, the moving stuff, and the classic country stuff. This cd is going to be big. Of course now there are 2 versions, the box set version ..and the "out of the box version." Get them both! THe DVD in the set is great too. Garth gives great insight and then you have the music......What a trip down memory lane. MY ADVICE IS GET THE SET WHILE IT LASTS. GO TO WALMART!

4 out of 5 stars Only Good Garth Album.......2005-11-26

Here is an artist that blew his wad on the first take....after this album, it was all downhill for country music. Of course, the pop music crowd ate him up, and the guy made millions...but left most of the real country music fans scratching their heads, and wondering what the hell happened! But, back to the album. This CD showcases Garth's talents with such numbers as: "I Know One", "Much Too Young", and "If Tomorrow Never Comes". It also includes the more "pop" oriented preview of the "Garth" to come, such as "The Dance" and "Everytime that it Rains". Despite my distaste for the direction he led country music (and he's a natural leader!), this is a solid album. I just wish his follow-up CD's would have followed the same vein.

2 out of 5 stars O.K. CD SOME SONGS ARE GOOD, MOST ARE AVERAGE!.......2005-11-04

Like most of Garth Brook's CDs, this one is average. The best songs on here are "The Dance" and "If Tomorrow Never Comes". Recording techniques using ultra modern equipment make anyone sound good but if you have ever seen this man perform live..and I have....he tends to go flat very often and cannot maintain his pitch. They can make anyone sound good on the records but the real proof of a good singer is in hearing them live. In Garth's case he does a lot of screaming and banging and breaking guitars but the man really cannot carry a tune to save his life.

5 out of 5 stars The start of a great career.......2005-08-22

Whatever you think of Garth's music, there is no doubt that Garth took country music to a wider audience (at least in America) than anybody else had ever done before him. He ended up outselling most pop stars while other country singers were able to sell albums in much larger quantities than their predecessors had done. So this first album by Garth marks the start of a musical revolution. This album yielded three major country hits (Much too young, The dance, If tomorrow never comes) but also contains many other excellent songs.

The first hit (Much too young) made the country top ten while giving a massive boost the career of a hitherto obscure singer called Chris LeDoux, who get a mention in the lyrics. However, the other two hits are the ones that live longest in the memory. The remain among Garth's most popular hits. Although neither charted in the UK at the time, The dance eventually became a minor UK hit for Garth while If tomorrow never comes topped the UK charts in 2002 when covered by Ronan Keating.

Among the outstanding album tracks are Alabama clay (about somebody attracted to the city lights only to realize that life on the farm is more to his liking), Every time that it rains (about a good memory of love on a rainy day), Nobody gets off in this town (about a town that has nothing to offer) and Cowboy Bill (a story song of the type that Kenny Rogers used to be so good at).

This is a classic album. I rate it third among Garth's albums (behind No fences and In pieces) but I'm sure that there are plenty of people who regard this as their favorite Garth album. If you enjoy Garth's music, you'll love this album.

2 out of 5 stars Good debut album.......2004-09-10

I am not a big fan of traditional country music, so this isnt among my favorite Garth CD's. However, it is a very good debut album overall. Includes the only song Garth ever wrote alone "Not Counting You" Also includes the classics "If Tomorrow Never Comes" "The Dance", and "Much Too Young To Feel This Damn Old" Very good!!

4 out of 5 stars The Best Album Garth Put Out.......2004-04-20

When Garth first hit the country music scene, it was back in '89 or '90. I remember first hearing him on the radio and was very delighted to hear something different and at the same time it was country.
This debut album of Garth's convey's a whole other side of Garth.
His version of, "I Know One" is beautifully done. Just wish he would have still done his music the way he started out; country.

In... The Life of Chris Gaines is a way for Garth Brooks to indulge his rock-star fantasies without directly putting his country credibility on the line. This fictional greatest-hits album is supposedly a prequel to a movie (The Lamb) in which Brooks will assume the role of a mysterious Australian-born pop singer. The first single, "Lost in You," sounds like Kenny Loggins auditioning for a role in the Backstreet Boys. Gaines's other "hits" range from the funk-lite of "Snow in July" to the Prince-like "The Way of the Girl," the Beatlesesque "Maybe," and the blatant Wallflowers rip "Unsigned Letter." The tune on which Brooks most resembles the cat in the hat we all know is the melancholy ballad "It Don't Matter to the Sun." The most provocative tune is "Right Now," which interpolates (really) the Youngbloods' hippie classic "Get Together" with Cheryl Wheeler's antigun screed "If It Were Up to Me." As himself, Garth Brooks has sold almost 100 million albums. If he's lucky, many of those fans will forgive him for Chris Gaines. --Rick Mitchell

5 out of 5 stars No twang here.......2007-03-30

I like Garth Brooks generally but this album is something else entirely. If you're not a country and western nut, but have a broader set of tastes, I think you'll like this album about a fictional rock star. It quickly became a favorite album of mine and it really made me laugh to see the "Garth-heads" become incensed about this betrayal. Lighten up guys - it's his career. If you don't like the album, don't buy it. Personally, I think it's one of the best things he's ever done.

5 out of 5 stars Way to go, Garth, or Chris.......2006-11-08

I'm not really a fan of country music, but I remember when the single on this album was released and when no one really knew it was Garth Brooks. I recently found this cd at a flea market and got it. If I had known what it would be like, I would have paid full price when it was first released. I really like the songs and it's really nice to see a country singer do something other than what he is famous for. I just wish they had done the movie which was supposed to follow the album. I'd give this one a definate thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars Garth got ripped on this one.......2006-06-21

I am a huge Garth fan but I just never got around to buying this album when it came out. Probably because I figured if it didn't get any air play, when he was so big at the time, that it must have been a loser. I kept hearing reviews from critics saying it was really good and that Garth should have released like his other records, not as an alter ego. I finally bought it and for once the critics were right! The radio stations really turned their backs on Garth over this one. It is a GREAT album. It does not sound like the "country" Garth but who cares! I can't believe that radio people just discounted and ignored the great songs on this CD and shame on his record lable for not promoting it more and releasing more singles off of it. He really got ripped off on all sides, with the exception of his more devoted fans and oddly enough the music critics. Garth needs to re-release some of this music with a new album cover and name on it, I am sure it would do really well.

5 out of 5 stars Brooks doesn't suck when he writes rock.......2006-05-20

As an avid hater of country music, I bought this album knowing that it would be better...Brooks has been quoted as saying he prefers rock but could not break into that market. It's too bad, because this is one of my favorite albums, and I am someone who likes Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, and Coldplay.

This is a diverse album of easy listening and easy rock tunes with lots of different sounds, styles, etc. It probably illustrates that Brooks was TOO diverse for rock. Whereas Country can handle these variations, rock is a little too narrowly defined.

I gave this a five out of five deliberately. I really do like all of the songs, some better than others. The guitar work is expert, the beat is solid and the songwriting is first rate. Great songs include "That's the way I remember it", "Driftin' Away", "Unsigned Letter", and "It Doesn't Matter to the Sun".

Brooks took some krap for crossing over to the dark side, but its the best stuff he has ever done.

1 out of 5 stars More controversial would've been better...........2006-02-05

Don't get me wrong. Garth brooks is very talented and has a great voice. However, this is basically a commercial sounding pop album...and not a very good one at that. There are a couple of good songs on here, especially the first track. Other than that, it is an overproduced, adult contemporary type sound. From the looks of the cover, you would think this CD would have a harder edge to it. Perhaps Garth should have leaned more towards hard rock, or even a heavy metal soundtrack. Hey, I believe that Garth Brooks has a good enough voice to do it. That would have got my attention! All in all, this is quite a dissapointment. If you find this in a bargain bin somewhere, it is worth a listen for a couple of bucks. Other than that, only buy it if you're a die hard Garth Brooks fan.

The Limited Series is either: a) the most generous gift to an artist's fans ever, since it packages six albums (that's Garth Brooks, No Fences, Ropin' the Wind, The Chase, In Pieces, and Fresh Horses) for a price that's actually less than what you'd normally pay for three; or b) the most manipulative use of an artist's fans ever, since it forces them to purchase as many as a half dozen albums they already own in order to hear the one new song included on each disc, simultaneously assisting Garth in his race to beat the Beatles' record for most units moved. Hmmm... Would you believe c) all of the above? --David Cantwell

In Pieces finds Garth at the height of his popularity--the album scored 5 hit singles--but in the basement of his admittedly considerable talent. This rise and fall coincided with Brooks's boldest movement yet away from traditional country. "Standing Outside the Fire," another Garth anthem to emotional risk, ends with bongo and rock guitar while "Ain't Going Down till the Sun Comes Up" is rock down to its "Subterranean Homesick Blues" melody. All of which would be fine if the songs were catchier, or if the lyrics--one song disses welfare recipients, another valorizes a father who beats up his boys--weren't such an annoying muddle. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars Garth Brooks- Country Idol.......2007-01-22

Yes, I'm just a kid, But I know about as much when it comes to Garth as anyone. Garth is the best, Not a very detailed fragment. But he can reach out to anyone, Me, You, Grandparents, Mom's and Dads, Small Children, Toddlers, Teens, Pre-Teens. Anyone, He's so entergetic. You'll see! If you think you've heard Country Music, You think you've seen and hearf it all? Not intill you listen to Garth Brooks.

5 out of 5 stars In Pieces.......2005-10-07

I am a huge garth Fan, I have all the albums and six of his live concerts. I like In Pieces because of the song "The Red Strokes" I don't really like the music video for it because I think that Garth could have done better on what to use in the video instead of just red paint and a white room, because just thoes two things are just scary when put together. But, I like the song because it talks about mainly love and what color the heart is, and he potrays it with alot about two people painting a picture of a heart and the color they use is alot of red. He even talks about how when your blue, the color of your heart is blue and when your jeleous your heart is green. But when you love, your heart is really red. In general, In Pieces is one of garths better albums.

5 out of 5 stars Garth's last classic album.......2005-08-10

While Garth has recorded some great music since this album was released, this was the last of his classic albums. It includes traditional country (The cowboy song) and a Cajun-styled song (Calling Baton Rouge) but most of the songs here owe as much to pop and rock influences as country. Die-hard traditionalists may not be impressed but this album has much to commend it.

The big American hits were generally the more up-tempo songs such as Ain't going down till the sun comes up, American honky tonk bar association and the aforementioned Calling Baton Rouge, which is a cover of a New Grass Revival song and features that group (including Bela Fleck and Sam Bush) as backing musicians. The album also includes Garth's two biggest UK hits, these being the mid-tempo Standing outside the fire and a power ballad, The red strokes, which provided Garth with his only UK top twenty hit.

Garth shows his romantic side on outstanding ballads such as Anonymous and One night a day, either of which would have made brilliant singles. Though none of the tracks were as controversial as We shall be free (from Garth's previous album, The chase), some tracks certainly caused a stir. One of the songs her (The night I called the old man out) is about a fight between a father and son. Another (The night will only know) manages to combine adultery and murder in the same song, though here the lovers are only witnesses to the murder. Another great track, without controversy, is the bluesy rocker, Kicking and screaming.

This is truly a classic album from Garth. Among his album, I rate it second only to No fences, though I can understand why some people think it's the best of the lot.

5 out of 5 stars Garth is the Real Deal.......2003-11-23

Garth Brooks was quoted at the time this CD was released as saying that this was "the most live album that we've cut", and it has a very basic up-close and personal feel to it; perhaps why I like much of country music is its lack of artificiality, and the making of great music without gimmicks and engineered manipulations (I'm obviously not counting cross-over "pop" country in that category). Here we have Garth's vocal mastery, with some virtuoso musicians backing him, giving us the real deal.

Garth co-wrote 5 of the 11 tracks, and the two songs that some find controvesial are my favorites: "The Night I Called the Old Man Out", about a rebellious son whoose father teaches him some old fashioned discipline, with a fist fight. "The blood came from my mouth and nose / But the tears came from his eyes". It has a fabulous rhythm and melody, as does "The Night Will Only Know", about an adulterous couple who are compromised to keep a dreadful secret. "But they would pay for their deceiving / For a deadly web was weaving / Why they picked that spot that evening / Lord, the night will only know".

It has a blend of slow and lovely ballads (Garth's sweet singing and the smooth, mellow saxophone on "One Night a Day" make it a winner, and "Annonymous" is truly romantic and beautiful) and rousing dance tunes like "American Honkey-Tonk Bar Association", and on all the numbers the musicianship is thoroughly brilliant, with each instrument given its time to shine.
This is some of the finest country music you can get; a combination of superb artistry and skill, and good for years of listening pleasure.
The sound is terrific, and total time is 40:42.

5 out of 5 stars The best country singer ever.......2003-10-29

Garth Brooks is a true talent his music is popular the world over. This, the last of his "early albums" just before his Greatest hits CD and "Fresh Horses", is one of his best. Every album Garth does has been great from his debut "Garth Brooks" in 1989 to his latest "Scarecrow". "In pieces", released in '94, covers Country, Rock and Pop. My favorite tracks are the top 10 hit's "the red strokes" and "standing outside the fire" as well as the album cut "the cowboy song". This is a fine album and will be liked by anyone who likes a wide tatse in good quality music.
