It is a fine collection of oboe pieces, and I really enjoy listening to them. The only complaint I have is that the case was broken when it got here (I'm not sure if it was before it was shipped or not).

This cd took a little while to be delivered (a few weeks) but it was in excellent condition. I bought it along with another oboe cd so it could be that one of them was out of stock and they waited for that so that both could be shipped at the same time (which was fine with me).

I really love the music on this CD.
I just cant stop listening to this. If you enjoy classical music. You will like this CD and if you would like a introduction to classical music than this is the CD for you.
(If you find that you dont like it, you have not spent a lot of money on it).

The record presents the oboe very well. Price can't be beat too. Oboe music is always enjoyable (well, that's somewhat subjective, of course, but if you like oboe, you'll like this collection).

Just a small caution: this is a study aid sort of thing. I find listening to fragments of music -- frequently very familiar music -- somewhat distressful because of this coitus interruptus sorta feeling, kind of like when in the middle of Watermusik the Dying Swan piece suddenly heaves into sight.

In other words, this is a perfect CD for teaching kids the orchestra, but if you simply want some oboe music for pleasure, then I'd recommend to pick something else; for example "The Handel Collection" (a pretty old record), by The City of London Sinfonia (cond. John Rutter), 1990 American Gramaphone Records -- it is a collection too, but not excerpts, pieces are played fully, and the performance is sometimes better. It's just one example; I have it handy so I've mentioned it, that's all. I don't like listening to excerpts, that's what I'm trying to say. But I'm not saying this CD's bad, it's very good for orchestra studies.

5 out of 5 stars At last! Maud Powell's musicianship available again.......2002-01-03

This is a reissue of "The Art of Maud Powell, a 'Victor Immortal' - complete recordings 1904-1917" prepared by the Maud Powell Foundation (Arlington, VA) in 1989. The guiding spirit behind that foundation, and project director of this collection, is Powell's biographer Karen A. Shaffer.

These three CDs were available only from the Maud Powell Foundation. I managed to get volume 3 several years ago after hearing all three discs from a library, but volume 2 has not been available. So, I've waited for volumes 1 and 2 hoping they'd come back "someday." Well, here they are, and Naxos has also released volume 3 according to their January 2 2002 newsletter.

Maud Powell (1867-1920) was in 1904 the first solo instrumentalist to record for Victor's new celebrity artist series on their Red Seal label. Their promotional materials told us to "Listen to Maud Powell's violin...if you want to find out how much can be got out of a fiddle, go--listen to--Maud Powell." They were right.

Powell's performances are the type of playing that may bring tears to your eyes, going straight to the heart and soul of the music and resonating with whatever you find inside yourself. She starts with a remarkably intense tone and naturally easy phrasing, then adds a tastefully varied vibrato and portamento (as vocally-inspired ornaments to heighten the expressivity). She varies her intonation according to the keys and the directions of the phrases, as her younger contemporary Pablo Casals did on the cello. It is extraordinary, like the best singer one can imagine but going beyond words. It is the kind of performance where it doesn't even matter what music she's playing...classical bon-bons, excerpts, folk songs, whatever. The music becomes a living thing in performances this good: breathing and moving and dancing right in front of you, and commanding your attention. It will get to you and you will feel it. What more needs to be said?

Bravo to Naxos for making these recordings available. The sound is pretty good, too, considering that the recordings were made before the availability of electric microphones. I hardly notice the background noise of the record since the performances are so directly engaging. These discs would be a "must-have" even at three or four times the price that Naxos is asking for them....

I listen to all of my Dance music through JBL Professional speakers in my basement. I have 4 SR4719x subwoofers (which have two 18" sub's in EACH cabinet) powered by a Crest 9001 tour amp. All I can say is that you need to listen to Laguna Seca's "the Flow" as loud as possible through the loudest speakers you can find--and you will see that this song takes you to another world. This CD absolutely ROCKS!!!

I absolutely love this mix. Some people are dismissing it as geared toward an American audience but I dismiss them because it's a stupid thing to say about a DJ. A dj's ultimate job is to make people happy by mixing others tracks together to create a journey unlike any other. Too often this is not done because some dj's will use tracks that you've have on ten other mixes, that's one of the strong points of this cd, it has some familiar tunes, (Godspeed by BT and Under the Water by Brother Brown) but Seaman also throws in some tracks that I don't have on anything else that are simply fantastic (Voices by Desert and The Flow by Laguna Seca). This cd is a must have for all trance/progressive music lovers whether you're American, European or Martian.

this is a very very very boring CD. Not only the songs he chose for his CD are flat, but the mixing itself is nothing special even though technically it is supurb. I got it because I like Dave Seaman's Renaissance Awakening CD. Do not get it even if you are the biggest fan of Dave -- you'd just be disapointed.

This album is great for those beginning to listening to trance.
What Dave Seaman exceeds other DJ's is his ability to uncover simple elements of trance and make it even better. Give him any tracks of your like and he'll remix it in a way that will make even the cheesiest song a true masterpiece, a delight to the ears of even the most hardcore trance listeners..
The tracks are subtle, yet it grooves with clean pure form of energy and style that's not outdated even though it was released in 1999,
impeccable mixing skills is what i associate with Dave Seaman,
enjoy it.

Ever since his dual cd contribution on the classic Renaissance 4 compilation, Seaman has had a star in my book. This outing is actually rather old now, but it demonstrates Seaman's quality behind the turntables. The mix builds nicely from the almost techy version of Godspeed through to the climax of Escape's fantastic Cascades and Orkidea's subliminal Unity, before coming to an end in the Albion remix of Anomaly - Calling Your Name (Yes, Sasha's done this before - but so what ?) In my opinion Seaman here demonstrates mixing which is world class: The subtlety is perfect. Another reviewer classified it as slightly rushed. I contest that by saying it has that all too often missed drive. Occasionally, instead of letting the tunes come to their outro, another track is mixed in - picking up before it's too late. This keeps people on the floor, and this CD more than any other is a CD suitable to dance to. My only wish is that this was another 2CD compilation - but when the CD is this good all is forgiven: Another one to Seaman's tally. Sasha (actually my favourite DJ) - watch out!

I love this cd. I bought it when i heard him for the first time on this cd's cd release tour. I just had to go buy it. It is head and shoulders above 100% of all trance albums of that era. Some people have remarked that he just played songs off Oakies' Tranceport, but this cd came out 10 months before Oakies'.

Do you remember that feeling that you had when you got your first kiss, had that first krush, snuck out of the house for the 1st time and got away with it, the afterglo after your first big 'O'.........."with another person"..;-)), well this is the music equivalent. So for the purist and novice alike BUY this classic and re-live those long forgotten vibes or create new ones. ;-))

For starters, For the other person who said it was cheesy yet good, it appears his review was just written in February 2003. This Kimball Collins ICU Session 1 CD is far from new, therefore the sound isnt the same type of electronic music or trance you would find today. This CD is 5 years old which makes it ancient for electronic music by todays standards. However, despite being 5 years old, it is easily one of the best CD's ever along with Paul Oakenfold's original Tranceport. This is one CD that should not be missing from anyones collection and you can literally pop it into the CD player and crank it without worrying about "happy trance drop outs" found in some of DJ Sammy's shallow club sounds or that of ATB or Alice Deejay.

If you are looking for a great CD to pop in and keep you awake on that long road trip, this is definitely one of those CD's. I consider this album one of my favorites as it, in a way, started my entire love for electronic music. (Track 12-Phase II) was the song that started it all for me. Since then I have managed to collect every single Global Underground, DJ Tiesto, Oakenfold, Seb Fontaine and many more. This Kimball Collins is still considered great, even among the artists and label runnings I just named.

I am a major trance junkie. I love the fast paced dance beats with the heavenly female vocals. I have been a big fan of trance for the past several years. Unfortunately trance doesn't get taken very seriously in the world of dance music. I think trance gets a bad rap and therefore are put down quite a bit like music snobs like house dj Armand Van Helden. Then again djs like DJ Sammy doesn't help the trance movement any better. Kimball Collins is another dj whose mix cd (for ICU) I found a bit on the cheesy side but nearly as bad as DJ Sammy on MoS's more recent dance compilation. Granted that "Session 1, Vol.1" is four years old, I can't help but feel that the music sounds so dated unlike Paul Oakenfold's "Another World" mix cd which is a few years old and yet still sounds fresh. Despite the material, Kimball Collins does an excellent job at blending the songs he chose into one endless mix which is a good thing. I thought he really did a good job at getting Fathers of Sound's "Water" and Agnelli & Nelson's "El Nino" to sound like one song. If anything I found this mix cd more on the trance side than house as noted on the cd cover. I'm not completely blown away by Kimball's work as a mix dj like I am with George Acosta. Still "Session 1" is a good cd to listen to right before heading out to the clubs on a Saturday night.

Why not? I never considered Pachelbel's famous "Canon" as a calming bit, but it has a drawing in atmosphere to it. In that sense, as this version has me forgetting my surroundings, yes... meditative.

Bach's "Air" has the pensivity you are likely looking for, as does Mozart's "Adante."

The Budapest Strings and Budapest Philharmonic are well-represented here, as they are on all ten CDs in the collection.

I fully recommend "Meditation: Classical Relaxation, Vol. 1", but for twice the price, you'll get all ten CDs. Come on... you know you want them.

    I met John at a club in San Diego a few months ago and he was the most egotistical self centered jerk I have ever met. I couldn't believe it. At the time I had never heard any of his stuff so I decided to give it a second chance and get one of his CD's. MAN WAS THAT A BAD DECISION!! This is one of the worst Cd's I have ever heard. I would rather listen to Vanilla Ice and NKOTB all day long for the rest of my life before I had to listen to this CD again. However the CD makes a nice coaster.

    Well I'm a big fan of Trance, progressive house and hard house. I don't know why I decided to buy this CD but it is probably one of the best CD's that I own now.

    This CD is the best of NuNRG. If your not familiar with this style its like a blend of House, Hard house and techno. Its very fast, hovering around 140 bmp and its slammin. This CD is great to party too. I don't have any others like it in my collection. I've had it for a year or so now and it is still pumpin. The CD stays hard from start to finish. So if you're in the mood for something to rock the house with get this CD, full of energy.

    Great mixing with a track selection that keeps your body movin from beginning to end. You won't be disappointed if your looking for something to dance all night too. I'm eagerly waiting for Jon to come out with another CD.

    I'm not biased.

    It's not that I'm displeased with the album, it's just that I don't like his style of house.

    A reviewer commented that he's heard cds from Oakenfold or Sasha, but they don't compare with Bishop. It's hardly fair to compare these djs considering their diversity in style and track selection--it's like comparing grunge rock to pop rock.

    If you prefer trance or funky house, then this cd is probably not for you. If you are into NRG, thumping electronic house, then pick it up. You will probably love this album. The mixing is well done and track selection is fine. I am not a particular fan of this house and conversely can only give it 3 stars.

    I have worked as a rave and party promoter, and a musician in the scene for nearly ten years. I am biased because when I first met Jon it was to hire him for an underground massive. He was the hit of the show, and I booked him at anything I could put togeather therafter. One of the cool things about Jon is that if the party was a money loser - not enough people - Jon would still spin like a mutha, and then refuse his pay. He has always supported the scene - and I'm glad to tell it. He wouldn't.

    We have also collaborated on a song or two. If the song or remix says it was done by Bliss, that would be us.

    His choice of music reflects his passion - get the feets on the floor. It is also typical of his songs, and the ones he chooses for his sets, to build with many layers - a trippy-fuge-prog house style. If you have ever indulged in mind altering practices or substances on the dance floor, this record will bring it back full force. This is hard and fast music, though. Not to be confused with chill room tunes. Beats are in the mid-to-high 130's and up from there. It's his choice of music and skillfull creative way he brings it togeather that set his mixes apart. I have been to many clubs and not known who was on the lineup - when suddenly the energy would change. It would notch up perceptably - people would hit the floor, moods would improve. I swear 9 out of ten times when this effect was hitting I would ask who the DJ was and be told it was Jon Bishop, just starting his set.

    He is great. His star is rising. Buy this CD. It is a prime example of what he does like no one else. It is in my "ready access" stack at all times.

        Recordings of the legendary violinist Erica Morini (1904-1995) are truly treasures - especially ones as rare as these. Once one of the great concert artists, looked up to by both Heifetz and Milstein for inspiration, she spent her last years in ill health and seclusion after suffering the theft of her Stradivarius and all her scores and memorabilia. These HMV, Polydor, Victor, and Armed Forces Radio Service recordings from before World War II are priceless records of her genius.
