Many current pianists take the motor rhythms and other elements of Bartók's style as a license to play with brutal power. But the composer's own performances show the rhythmic drive of the music leavened with a lyrical, romantic sensibility. You hear the same thing in the playing of Lili Kraus, a piano student of Bartók who remained devoted to his music all her life. Kraus recorded this collection of folk-influenced music in 1980, near the end of her life. She still played beautifully, and her interpretive style shows us how this music was meant to sound. This is a very entertaining disc as well as a very instructive one. --Leslie GerberAlbum Review:
