In 1979 redneck rock reached an apex with "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," a monster hit that reached No. 1 on the country charts and crossed over to No. 3 on the pop charts. But as this 1983 overview suggests, the Charlie Daniels Band was more than a one-hit wonder, even if the fiddle duel on "Devil" remains their definitive moment. Only Lynyrd Skynyrd could equal the energy of their rocking mix of Southern boogie, honky-tonk, and electric blues. At 10 tracks, this set may seem a bit skimpy, and while there's no dross, some listeners will find the nascent jingoism of "In America" and "The South's Gonna Do It Again" hard to swallow. --Roy Kasten

With their dueling guitar leads and harmonies built on a double drummer foundation, the Allman Brothers Band cast the mold for the southern rock sound that would proliferate in the '70s. Virtuoso musicians, their songs drew upon a number of southern influences, including country, the blues, New Orleans jazz, and even gospel, creating a sound that was distinctly theirs. Decade of Hits is a great catalog of the Allman's at their guitar wielding best. The sweet, infectious harmonies on the instrumental "Jessica" have become a classic reference point in themselves. Next to the tragedies that plagued them--two motorcycle deaths, heroin addiction--the Allman's are probably best known for the heroic "Ramblin' Man." Written and sung by the now legendary Dickey Betts, the song contained everything that made the band great: intricate guitar harmonies, a strong melody, and just enough twang to keep the thing tight. Decade also contains Allman staples "Melissa," "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," and "Southbound." --Steve Gdula

LOVE IT.......2007-04-26
I love this CD. I wish there were more hits on it, but hey. I like The Allman Brothers Band loads better than Greg Allman on his own. It took me awhile to finally find the song/s I like, done the way I remember them. Glad I finally found this one.

This is a great copulation. I Highly Recommend this cd.
GREAT SOUTHERN ROCK COLLECTION.......2007-03-13
The Allman Brothers' A Decade of Hits 1969-1979 is arguably the best greatest hits compilation ever assembled and released within the Southern Rock genre.
Indeed, it is a most enjoyable listen. It has the early hits with the fine-tuned organ and the top-notch guitar work of the great Allman Brothers. The very early tracks from the 1969-1970 period, Whipping Post and all, are quite appealing and are reminiscent of those darker tunes in the style of Sugarloaf's Greeneyed Lady and Santana's Soul Sacrifice.
The commercially successful records that put the Allman Brothers at the top of the charts but were, sadly, recorded and released well after the death of Duane Allman are all there, from the number 2 hit, Ramblin' Man, to the immortal instrumental that has received international accolades, namely Jessica.
For those who want a perfect Allman Brothers sampler without delving into the boxed sets or anything that is outside that frequently played on the classic rock radio stations, this is it. You have the signature live and studio pieces that have preserved the Allman Brothers' legacy. 'Nuff said.
Great CD from one of the greatest bands..........2006-11-05
This is one of those CDs that takes me away to a different place every time I listen to it and there are very few artists that can achieve that. The Allman Brothers were (and still are, albeit with an altered lineup)the best blues/rock band ever, in my opinion. This "Decade of Hits" does nothing to dispel that opinion. I love every single song presented here. My particular favorites are "Dreams" (which features a rare, super slide-guitar by Greg Allman); "Statesboro Blues"; "One Way Out" (with the extraordinary slide-guitar race between Duane Allman and Dickey Betts); "Revival" with a chorus that makes one think of a Deep South gospel choir; the exquisite "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" which is pure Allman jam with no vocals...the list goes on and on. If anyone out there needs a crash-course in the blues, this is a one-stop class. You will not regret purchasing this.

Buddy Bregman on Charlie Daniels.......2007-05-06
Having been associated with Ella, Bing, Sammy Davis on many many recordings - I can't tell you how thrilled Charle Daniels makes me feel - there is something so infectious about his music - it sends chills down my spine - this album is a total winner - and I play it all the time - I don't even do that with my own recordings or any other artists material - IT IS SUCH A "FEEL-GOOD" GROUP OF SONGS AND OVER-ALL MUSIC - I can't wait to get into my car and play it again. Especially Devil Comes Down To Georgia!!!
Yeah, Charlie,
Buddy Bregman
One of the Best Country Albums Ever Made.......2005-05-03
My dad had a tape of this album and i loved "The Devil Went Down To Georgis". The quick tempo made it interesting to listen to. I listened to it over and over again. I went further into the tape to find more wonderful songs. If you buy one CD this year, make it this, it's one of the greatest ever.
Best album I've ever heard!.......2004-06-28
The Charlie Daniels Band, in my mind is the Best Country band ever! This was an amazing album. I love it and play it every day, probably every hour. I'm only 15, but I know Mr. Daniels' songs like I'm 50. This Album brings out the best of CDB and is well deserving of praise! CDB is very Patriotic and Mr. Daniels is a model citizen. God Bless Mr. Daniels. God Bless our Soldiers and President Bush.
GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!
The songs that made Charlie Daniels an American icon.......2004-05-02
I came of age at a time when rock (if you can call late "1970s rock" rock - I wouldn't) and country sometimes overlapped, and no one straddled the genres as successfully and meaningfully for me and my friends as The Charlie Daniels Band. 1979's The Devil Went Down to Georgia was huge and served as my introduction to this country band that knew how to rock a fiddle. Then came the 1980 Full Moon album featuring The Legend of Wooley Swamp, a song I couldn't get enough of. You couldn't go to a pizza joint for a year and a half without someone cuing this song up on the jukebox (usually more than once). Also from the Full Moon album came In America. This was 1980: America was suffering from stagflation (an all but impossible economic combination of both inflation and high unemployment that only Jimmy Carter could make happen), the Soviets were rattling their sabers and pointing increasing numbers of nuclear missiles at the US, and the American hostages in Iran headlined the news every single night - America was at one of the weakest points in its history. Charlie Daniels made all of us proud to be Americans again with his patriotic anthem In America.
Uneasy Rider is a story song featuring some classic bluegrass picking in the background dating back to the band's early days. The song's about a hippie who gets stuck in a redneck Mississippi town and holds off a gang of five country boys by calling one of them out as a liberal pinko Commie; it's a great, comedic song running in excess of five minutes (which qualified as a long song back in that era). 1974's Long Haired Country Boy is your classic "good old country boy" song; this country boy doesn't have much, but everything he does have, he got on his own - as old Hank would say, a country boy can survive. If you don't like it, just leave this long haired country boy alone. Still in Saigon relates the experiences of a soldier in Vietnam and the trouble he had adjusting to life back home.
Of course, 1974's The South's Gonna Do It Again holds a special place in many a Southerner's heart; this is the song morning deejays play when they want to rile up some of the masses of Yankees that have moved down South in the last few decades. It's a great song, featuring an extended bit of serious fiddle playing, but it's probably best appreciated down here below the Maxon-Dixon line.
Stroker's Theme, Every Time I See Him, and Let It Roll were previously unreleased tracks included on the album. Let It Roll is a real toe-tapping, rocking country number that really gets the juices flowing (and I'm not talking about tobacco juice). The band packs a lot of intensity into Every Time I See Him as well, although this isn't really a stand-out track. The Charlie Daniels Band is still going strong today, but both their roots and their most commercially successful tracks are forever preserved in this impressive collection of hits from their first decade of recordings.
Great Charlie Daniels Collection.......2003-09-29
A DECADE OF HITS is a great collection of Charlie Daniels' best- known songs. If you're new to Daniels' music, get this one, FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN, and MILLION MILE REFLECTIONS to start- preferably all at once.

Not what I expected.......2007-03-18
Very limited selection of music. Not at all what I wanted or needed. There was nothing to tell what songs were on it, so I bought it without knowing. THAT was MY mistake!
Great Records Of The Decade 70's, Vol. 1.......2006-11-06
If you love the 70's like I do this is the CD for you. It brings the past to life with the hit music of that decade. A fan of the 70's dreams come true.
Great records...NOT but a fine CD.......2006-04-19
OK, I have offbeat tastes in music so I purchased this album as soon as I saw it. I can't believe they called it Great Records because the vast majority of people would not agree. However, I grew up listening to Melody of Love and all of these songs. Also, where else can you find the Mike Curb Congregation? I don't know if the Kelly's Hero's soundtrack is even in print anymore. Anyway, fine CD. Most of it is going on my IPOD.
Suits Me..........2006-02-23
I think the title of the CD is a little misleading but the songs suit me. Songs like Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life" didn't become huge hits because nobody liked them! Infact, that song is the reason I bought the CD. I admit it, I love the song!
Good CD For The Money!.......2001-11-28
Yep, I bought this CD right here on Amazon, and it is quite good for its low price. I must admit that it is at least somewhat of a guilty pleasure to hear the then-sparrow (and one-hit wonder) Debby Boone singing 1977's biggest hit "You Light Up My Life" and an early '70's Wayne Newton singing the tripey "Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast." However, the reason why I purchased this CD was to have the long version of the great Exile song "Kiss You All Over", which by itself is more than worth its extremely low price.
Bottom line: sure, some of this stuff is kitschy, but if you're looking for the full-length version of the above song, then where else are you going to get it for only 6 bucks???

Decade is a greatest hits album containing singles recorded between 1981 and 1989 ranging from "Planet Earth" to "Notorious." This CD provides any Durannie a chance to reflect on the transgression the group had made from the stark pop of "Girls on Film" to the New Romantic chariot "Save a Prayer" and finally to the dismal Brit funk embarrassment "All She Wants Is." The album could have been stronger if commercial hits such as "Notorious" were replaced with better songs like "New Moon on Monday." Nevertheless, the purpose of this collection was to display representative songs from each album created before 1989, and in this it succeeds. --Beth Bessmer
Album Description
Dutch edtition of 1989 singles compilation for the new wave icons, currently out-of-print in the U.S.. Standard jewel case.

Duran Duran Greatest Hits.......2007-03-22
If you are a fan of Duran Duran or 80s music in general you owe it to yourself to pick up Duran Duran DECADE. Chock full of the top hits by one of the hottest bands of the 1980s (was DD everywhere in 1983/1984 or what, only Michael Jackson was bigger --- albeit a lot).
Songs that stand the test of time like Hungry Like The Wolf, Rio, and tons more, if you want a solid compilation of great 80s music with synthesizers ablazing, pick up a copy of Duran Duran DECADE!
**** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Utterly Fantastic!.......2005-10-01
If you want to get into 80s music, forget all the other bands and focus on Duran Duran. They have a talent that is un-paralleled, and this shows on this hits album.
If you don't know what album to get, but want to get into this band, buy Decade, as it has every single hit they've ever recorded - "Rio", "Hungry Like The Wolf", "Girls On Film", "Save A Prayer", "A View To A Kill", "The Reflex" and "Wild Boys", amongst some other fantastic tunes.
Pop-tastic, in the 80s way.
This is strange for me to rate, as I am generally a rocker at heart, but the 80s are my weakness, and Duran Duran are my biggest weakness from that time. And yes, I am going to see them in about three months and can't wait.
But seriously, this album is absolutely AMAZING, and everyone must own it who likes this type of New Romantic music.
Dated Collection, Covers 80s Very Well, Terrible Liner Notes.......2004-09-08
There was a time when Duran Duran was as big a band as any band of the 80s. During the early and mid 80s, the quintet from England were the complete darlings of MTV and Top 40 "Hit Radio". As the late 80s occurred and there was a more of a trend away from synth-pop and more toward hard rock and rap - Duran Duran would start to struggle to find themselves. This collection "Decade" basically is a dated greatest hits collection that was released at the end of the 1980s that chronicles the band during the decade.
The reason why "Decade" is dated is because Duran Duran has still gone on in the 1990s and have released several other albums. The band released "Greatest Hits" in 1998 and that particular collection has every song that "Decade" has, plus some of the major songs from the 1990s. "Decade" still does a decent job at providing a collection of Duran Duran's works from its peak period - the 1980s. In fact, the song that I would have expected to have on this collection, but isn't is "New Moon On Mondays".
Duran Duran would release six albums in the 1980s and there is representation from each of the albums, plus the title song from the James Bond movie "A View To A Kill" (which was their only U.S. #1 period). I normally like to see a greatest hits collection presented in chronological album order. "Decade" comes close, but doesn't do this exactly. For example, "Is There Something I Should Know" is from the self titled "Duran Duran" album, but this follows "Save A Prayer" from the Rio album. I think they may have followed the order when the singles are released, but I'm not really sure. Of the six albums, you do get a view for how Duran Duran evolved as a group - so this is a good thing.
"Planet Earth", "Girls on Film" and "Is there Something I Should Know" come from the debut album "Duran Duran". These are songs when Duran Duran first hit the music scene. At this time they were still somewhat of an underground new-wave group that go a lot of play in the clubs. These songs clearly reflect that.
When the "Rio" album was released, this put Duran Duran mainstream. This was the hey-dey of the early 80s music and clearly the songs from "Rio" represent this well. "Rio" and "Hungry Like th Wolf" were boosted by some creative videos by the band, yet these songs stand very well on their own. Also included from this album is a very powerful ballad called "Save a Prayer". This particular song showed that Duran Duran had depth with their music. All of these songs catered very well to 80s radio and MTV. The third album, "Seven and Ragged Tiger" was basically a solid follow-up to "Rio" and Duran Duran rode the wave very well. "The Union of the Snake" and "The Reflex" represent this album on "Decade". The songs from these two albums were from the synth-pop period of Duran Duran.
Things started to change as the mid 1980s occurred. The band members began to find themselves and this is where the group started to splinter in projects such as the Supergroup Power Station (John and Andy Taylor) and the Duran Duran spinoff Arcadia (with the remaining 3 members Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes, and Roger Taylor). Right before these projects occured, the band released a live album called "Arena". One of the songs on that album was "Wildboys". Perhaps each of the members were starting to find themselves as they started to depart slightly from the formula that had worked. This particular song had some moments of some terrific drumming by Roger Taylor. The band would also do the terrific song for the James Bond movie - "A View To A Kill" (not on a Duran Duran album) which continued along this theme and also had terrific percussions.
As the 80s progressed, Duran Duran and the music scene around them changed. Roger Taylor and guitarist Andy Taylor would leave the band. Meanwhile, the music scene moved away from synth pop. Tears For Fears was a top synth pop band in the 80s and when they released their 1989 "The Seeds of Love" album, they basically reinvented themselves with a more natural sound. Duran Duran did make some adjustments to their formula - but not a reinvention of themselves. On Duran Duran's fifth album, "Notorious" - they do start to move away from synth pop - however it just didn't work. The title song "Notorious" was clearly not on par with the previous work they did during the decade. The other song from "Notorious" is "Skin Trade" deviates further from their traditional early 80s sound and isn't bad. Duran Duran's sixth album "Big Thing" would continue along the same trend started in "Notorious" and "Decade" includes two weak songs - "I Don't Want Your Love" and "All She Wants Is". "All She Wants Is" does incorporate some slight rap elements (although the song isn't a rap). These two songs are pretty weak and as the 80s ended, Duran Duran were no longer the pop darlings. Following "Decade" in the 90s Duran Duran would find some success in reinventing themselves with the "Duran Duran (The Wedding Album)".
The liner notes are terrible - in fact as bad as can be. The song titles are printed in big betters and the credits are very hard to read. There is no credits listed for the band members as well. There are also no lyrics. It would have also been nice to have some sort of writeup for this collection. Yes the content is here with the songs, but you can also get this on the more complete "Greatest Hits" album. This wouldn't be something I recommend unless you can get a good deal on it.
This is HISTORY.......2004-08-22
Reading past comment I was laughing very loud.
Although everyone has its own opionion I believe that this compilation is worths the buying.
DD made history. This is not an opionion. This is a FACT. Then you may say if you agree or not and that is correct. We all have opionions. But FACTS are FACTS.
Now, further to that, if you wanna take a junmp into DD history I wuld probably reccomend the laytesta Compilation, that is DURAN DURA GREATEST HITS. It contains all major hits until 2000 (medazzaland cd included).
But htis compilation is nice too: songs from DURAN DURAN, RIO, SEVEN and the RAGGED TIGER. Believe me: they made pop music change. Forward.
Cheers,
Enrico
i give it a "3" but it's better than that.......2004-08-02
ahaha. well, what can you say about duran duran's greatest hits? "rio" is probably the only certified masterpiece, but others, like "girls on film," "hungry like the wolf," "planet earth," and "save a prayer" (also maybe a masterpiece) are fun, too. but really, who are you kidding? just go hunt down _rio_ in a bargain bin somewhere and call it a day.

A CD that would have been great if it were complete........2001-05-22
I am a Disney fan. I admit it freely and without shame. So naturally when I saw this album I decided that I had to have it. It starts off great, with the modern Lion King and other Disney favorites, in all their radio version glory. Unfortunately, there is a notable gap in the playlist. The cd does not include the Beauty and the Beast duet, which is one of the best radion version Disney songs out there. And I also was disappointed to see the caliber of the songs degrade as the cd progressed. The last few songs on the cd were not worth hearing, and certainly do not deserve to be considered the Greatest pop hits. I was annoyed enough to burn the songs I liked and add Beauty and the Beast and You'll Be in My Heart from Tarzan, creating a cd that truly deserved the name Greatest Pop Hits.
Really, Really Good.......2000-08-06
I thought this CD is very, very good. I really have the tape verison I got for my bithday but it's the same thing. It has songs from the movies The Lion King, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Toy Story, Cinderella, Hercules, and others. And different artists Elton John, Venessa Williams, Peabo Bryson, Regina Belle Randy Newmen, Lyle Lovett, Jon Secada, Linda Ronstadt, Donna Summer, Jimmy Cliff and many others. I think this cd or tape is really good for little kids who like the movies the songs on this cd(or tape) are from. I recommed this cd(or tape) for any age but more little kids. Most of songs on this cd are beautiful or fun to lesson to or sing along. It has the song If I Never Knew You that was cut out from the movie Pocahontas! Buy it Today.
Really good.......1999-10-03
Cute tape. Nice songs. I agree with the person who said they wished "Beauty and the Beast" featuring Celine Dion was on there. "Never Alone" is so sweet you could cry. The best-ever Elton songs, "Circle" and "Can You Feel" are on here, and so is the so-beautiful "Colors of the Wind" by Vanessa Williams. If you are a fan of pop, Disney or both, get this CD today!
Great....prefer pop songs to the actual movie songs........1999-09-01
I don't know about all you people all there, adults and children alike, but I thought that the Disney songs in the movie were dull and boring. However, when I got this CD out of a GOOD recommendation, I noticed these songs were from the ending credits, beginning credits, etc. (Which were the exact songs I enjoyed the most!) I especially liked several of the songs on this album including "Can you feel the love tonight" from Elton John; "Whole New World" from Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle; "Circle of Life" from Elton John again; "Colors of the Wind" from Vanessa Williams; "Go the Distance" from Michael Bolton; "If I never knew you" from Jon Secada and Shanice. These six songs were the best on the album, and it is definetely worth your money.
However, if you like the songs in the actual MOVIE itself (not ending/beginning credits); May I suggest the Classic Disney albums. This album series has five, I believe, in its series. I do not suggest wasting your money and buying all of them. I especially liked the 1st and 2nd album; you may also take a look at the most recent (the 5th album). Great stuff, don't miss out.
It was great except that it lacked one great song........1999-04-14
I really enjoyed this album a lot, but I never heard the song sung by Celine Diona and Peobo Bryson, the ultimately beautiful Beauty and the Beast ballad. Why is that song not on this album? Other than that, I felt that this album was spectacular.

The quintessential 1980s band.......2004-07-31
In a decade known for novelty acts and one-hit wonders, Duran Duran was the real deal. Other bands from the 1980's may have gone on to bigger and better things (c.f. U2, REM) but no group better captured the zeitgeist of the decade. As such, Duran Duran's first "best of" compilation is aptly named.
As with many "Best Hits" records of the pre-CD era, "Decade" has become marginalized by longer, later releases, and thus consigned to the cutout bin. But there's something pure in "Decade's" approach that the other compilations lack. "Decade" includes most - but not all - of Duran's top hits from 1981-1988. As with all vinyl era comps, there are some regrettable omissions, most notably "New Moon on Monday" (as well as some fortunate omissions, like "Meet 'El Presidente.')
Duran resists the temptation to include the obligatory "previously unreleased" track that every other band uses to push record sales. Unfortunately, that means there's nothing extra here for the hardcore Duranie, who had to wait until "Singles 1981-1985" for such rarities as "Secret Oktober" and "Faster than Light."
It seems every compilation review focuses on what you don't get. What you do get is a solid best-hits compilation, pure and simple. For the diehard Duran fan, it's probably superfluous, unless you're an absolute completist. For the casual Eighties fan, it's essential. And at this bargain basement price, it's a no-brainer.
I lvoe Duran Duran.......2003-09-18
this is the band that made View To a Kill a good movie. The songs on here are great like girls on film, Rio, and Planet Earth This is one of the best bands of all time

50's Hits: Great Records of the Decade.......2001-10-19
Finally! After being ripped off by sound-alike (I use the term sarcastically) artists and crummy re-recordings, I found a label I can trust! This album is released by Curb Records, and the songs are the genuine article. Apparently Mike Curb, of "Burning Bridges" fame, believes in giving the customer the real thing.
All of the songs on this cd were big hits in the 50's, and one of the few that has the original "Poor Little Fool" and "Susie Darlin". The variety of selections is also unique, ranging from Pat Boone's ballad "Love Letters in the Sand", to the somewhat unusual (compared to the other 12) "Black Denim Trousers", and the timeless "Blueberry Hill".
There are really no bad tracks in this baker's dozen. Whether you are just getting into the sounds of the 50's or just filling gaps in your collection, this album is worth it!
Worthy Collection of Assorted Hits.......1998-06-19
Though many of the songs included are available on better collections, this CD boasts original hits by the original artists, including the elusive hit single by Ricky Nelson, "Poor Little Fool." Any CD that includes "Black Denim Trousers" by the Cheers and "Susie Darlin'" by Robin Luke is worth the price.
