Glen Campbell stands as the biggest pop country crossover artist of the late '60s. His highly successful work on Capitol Records applied elaborate studio craft to songs of suburban angst. As an interpreter of the detail-rich vignettes of songwriter Jimmy Webb, Campbell articulated dense lyrical narratives with emotional clarity. A highpoint of Campbell's long career, Wichita Lineman was the third of four career-making albums (along with Gentle on My Mind, By the Time I Get to Phoenix, and Galveston). Along with the title cut, the 1969 album features another massive Campbell potboiler, "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife." The rest of album surveys songs written by everyone from Otis Redding to Sony Bono to the Reverend Billy Graham. --Michael McCall

5 out of 5 stars Memories, memories, memories..........2007-01-20

I listened to this on LP when I was a kid...I knew all the words and learned to sing "high" by singing with Glen. He is still just an awesome performer, and it's so good to know that this is here for us "old folks" to buy and share with our children to show them what REAL music is!

5 out of 5 stars Glen at his best.......2005-08-21

This was probably Glen Campbell's best album effort and marks the height of his superstardom. It contained two huge crossover hits, "Wichita Lineman" and "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife". Many of Glen's other albums also contained a couple of hits, but sometimes fell short in filling out the rest of the disc. Not so here. Glen does excellent covers of "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay", "Words", "Reason to Believe", and "You'd Better Sit Down Kids". Add to that delightful versions of "Ann", "The Straight Life", and, perhaps Glen's most underrated performance, "If You Go Away". Glen adds in the self-penned "Fate of Man" and wraps up the album with the mournful "That's Not Home". The cuts have the flavor of pop, rock, and country all woven together in a masterful collection. If were to buy one Glen Campbell album, this would be it.

5 out of 5 stars Wichita Lineman.......2005-08-08

Back when I was a kid, Glen Campbell had a string of hits that gave him many accolades. While I would agree that this is an album around singles, "Wichita Lineman" is one of the greatest songs that has been played on American radio, back when singles had great influence.

5 stars for the title track alone. It is his best.

Also, "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife" is a pleasant waltz and another haunting melody.

FYI - "Reason to Believe" is the same song that was covered more recently by Rod Stewart.

Glen was one of the first to take country genre mixing and he succeeded.

4 out of 5 stars A few hits, a few overlooked gems and a little filler........2004-08-23

Glen Campbell is definitely a singles artist. He's released dozens of classic singles and works best within the frame of a three minute pop/country composition. Although he won a Grammy for album of the year for 1967's "By The Time I Get To Phoenix", his LPs are usually not worthy of such an honor. A Glen Campbell LP from the 60s and 70s usually consisted of a current hit single, a recent hit single, maybe one yet to be, several covers, and a couple of lesser known tracks. The result was always enjoyable, but rarely cohesive. "Wichita Lineman" is one of his best-remembered albums for several reasons. Being his only Billboard #1 pop LP, it presents Campbell at the zenith of his initial 60s superstardom. It was during this album's chart run that he became a household name and it features two of his most memorable hit singles: "Dreams Of The Everyday Housewife" and the smash title track, which along with "Gentle On My Mind" and "Rhinestone Cowboy", has become one of his signature tunes. Glen's plaintive vocal of the song's haunting lyrics (by Jimmy Webb) coupled with Al DeLory's string arrangement and the ultra cool bass-guitar solo break combined to make this a much revered classic among classics. The line "...and I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time" is one of the all-time great romantic lyrics.
After the hits come the covers. The ones that work best are takes on Sonny Curtis' "The Straight Life", Tim Hardin's "Reason To Believe", and a definitive version of Jacques Brel and Rod McKuen's "If You Go Away". The latter is one of Glen's all-time greatest vocal performances and this track is certainly an overlooked gem. He also does convincing covers of Otis Redding's "Dock Of The Bay", Billy Ed Wheeler's "Ann", and the Bee Gees' "Words". Less successful is his rendition of Sonny Bono's "You Better Sit Down Kids". That leaves two tracks. "That's Not Home" is a sad tale of broken romance reminiscent of "By The Time I Get To Phoenix". It's written by Billy Graham (I'm assuming not the evangelist) and is another great vocal performance. The last track is an original spoken word piece that Campbell based on a poem written by his grandfather, "The Fate Of Man".
If you already own a comprehensive hits collection by Glen Campbell you may want to consider adding this disc to your collection as well. It's well worth the price just to have "If You Go Away".

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding early work of a superstar.......2003-04-23

Some of Glen's best early work appears here. A great version of the old Sonny & Cher classic, "You better Sit Down Kids" PLUS "Words" which Glen does SO MUCH BETTER than the BeeGees ever did. "If You Go Away" is so heartfelt and "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife" is nothing short of classic for the period. ENJOY!

4 out of 5 stars The Singers were overshadowed by a beautiful orchestra........2001-02-22

I agree with the previous reviewer in that the King's Singers do sound much better acappella. Their strength is in the way they perform as a vocal group; the flawless ensemble technique that they possess. This technique is obscured by the orchestra. The majority of the album could have been performed by any vocal group, and there would have been not much of a difference in quality. On a positive note, I percieved the orchestrations to be extremely creative. When I first heard the album, having the original performances of these songs ingrained in my mind, I was not particularly turned on by it. It sounded very odd. A few months later, however, I dug the CD out again and listened to it more carefully. I discovered that what I previously thought of as radical and drastic changes to the original recordings actually was a refreshing, poetic interpretation of popular songs.Don't buy this album thinking that you are buying a copy of the King's Singers performing traditional arrangements of America's favorite popular music. Rather, you are buying a rendition of this music that reads more into the lyrics than perhaps even the original recordings did. It is a more classical sound, and it is something to be listened to seriously. I am forced to give this recording four stars. I thought the orchestra and the arrangements were exceptional. I especially liked The Sound of Silence and Homeward Bound. However, I bought this album excepting yet another example of vocal mastery from the King's Singers, and that is not here. They do not shine when backed up by an orchestra.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but not their best work.......2000-06-26

I first heard this recording when I bought a boxed set of 6 King's Singers CDs, and given the repertoire on the album, I actually though I would enjoy it more than what I did. There's nothing actually bad about it, but I thought they could have made more of the songs, particularly Vincent and The Sound of Silence. This recording is accompanied by an orchestra, something which the King's Singers don't do that often, but the actual orchestration on this CD is very well done. Although I still personally believe that their best work has always been a cappella. Nonetheless, one of the things I appreciate most about the King's Singers is their ability to perform an extremely diverse repertoire, and that fact alone still makes this album worthwhile. My favourite tracks are Simon Smith, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and It's Lonely at the Top.

You really gotta love this guy. One of the true originals. When I was in college, I took a music appreciation course (you would think we would learn classical, that sort of thing) Wrong, our teacher taught us, among others, Glen Campbell. It just doesn't get any better than "Wichita Lineman." What a song!

This CD is Great! Okay, all your cool friends may make fun of you but I bet you'll listen secretly behind closed doors. Old favorites include "Gentle on My Mind" and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" but who would think Glen could perform one of the most beautiful renditions of "Amazing Grace" you'll ever hear?

The majority of the songs are so good you can even forgive him for "Rhinestone Cowboy" and "Southern Nights." No one said Glen couldn't be hokey.

Buy this CD today and play it for all your friends. Let's turn on a new generation to the wonder that is Glen Campbell.

I too had never heard Glen Campbell's (or anyone else's) version of "Wichita Lineman" before hearing this. Not being a huge Wade Hayes fan, I was stunned at his beautiful rendition. The only word I can use is WOW! A gorgeous song, a gorgeous voice, gorgeous melody, simply perfect. This is truly one of the best songs that nobody has ever heard. I don't know why it wasn't more widely played. But this one is too good to pass up.

I was cleaning the house with CMT playing in the backround, not really paying attention to what videos were on. I heard that ache-inducing music and then the smooth, deep, buttery voice of Wade Hayes. I said to myself-Oh my God what IS this song?! (I had never heard Glen Campbell's rendition). I sat down on the sofa and gazed at the TV screen. The analogy of Wade traveling from show to show and his lonely ache for the one he loves, to the lineman and his lonliness was meaningful. The way the video was produced really set the mood perfectly-I felt like crying. I had to have this song so I could play it so many times that I was sick of it. I waited for the CD to be released. And waited. I called a local country music station and asked them to play it-they didn't have it and weren't getting it. The DJ wasn't very clear as to why. I was frustrated--how could this masterpiece be kept such a secret?!--Wade should recieve MUCH recognition for his version of this solemn song. In the grand scheme of things it was written for him to sing. And he certainly knows how to protray a feeling-in his singing and acting. But his song has disappeared into thin air. Can anyone tell me why???
