Album Description

Modern bluegrass was born on July 4, 1957 when the original Country Gentlemen took the stage at the Admiral Grill in Baileys Crossroads, Virginia. The foursome heard on this disc is the "classic" Country Gentlemen-Charlie Waller, John Duffey, Eddie Adcock, and Tom Gray, one of the greatest ensembles in bluegrass history. This reissue of the Gents' 1973 album catches the band in its prime. 28-page booklet, 16 tracks, 46 mins.

5 out of 5 stars classic music, but not the classic line-up.......2007-06-13

This is typically great music from the Country Gentlemen, recorded at a series of live dates in 1964 but not released until 1973. However, the liner notes erroneously refer to it as being from the "classic" Gents line-up of Charlie Waller, John Duffey, Eddie Adcock, and Tom Gray, when in fact it was Ed Ferris, not Tom, on bass.

Amazon.com essential recording

The Country Gentlemen saw bluegrass through some sea changes. One of the first groups to include rock and pop elements in their songs, they also deepened the music's appeal to urban coffeehouse and college audiences. The resulting sound remains influential even as their generation has become bluegrass music's elder statesmen. This double-disc retrospective from Rebel Records gives an admirable overview of what made the Gentleman so consistently innovative and exciting throughout their musical chair-lineup changes, which included at one time or another everyone from Charlie Waller, Doyle Lawson, and Bill Emerson to John Duffey, Eddie Adcock, and Ricky Skaggs. Appropriately enough for the first "progressive" bluegrass band, the song selection ranges from rock and folk covers like Bob Dylan's "Girl from the North Country" and CSN's "Teach Your Children" to lonesome bluegrass classics like Ralph Stanley's "The Fields Have Turned Brown."

5 out of 5 stars Solid Introduction to an Amazing Band.......2007-06-04

I first purchased this collection on vinyl shortly after its original release in 1982 after seeing the Country Gentlemen play live at a festival. Over the course of twenty-six songs, the listener is provided with a concise history of this seminal band. However, while the title 25 YEARS implies a complete history, be aware that what you are really getting is a collection of songs recorded for Rebel Records from the mid-sixties through 1980 (although two tracks--"Come & Sit by the River" and "The Likes of You"--are provided by their then current label Sugar Hill.) Because the Country Gentlemen recorded for a variety of labels during their first twenty-five years (Starday, Vanguard, Folkways among them), this collection is not as thorough as it could be.

Despite those limitations, there is some excellent material here, especially the period from 1959 through 1969 when the classic lineup included Charlie Waller on guitar and vocals (the founder and lone constant throughout the entire band's history), John Duffey on mandolin and vocals, Eddie Adcock on banjo, and either Tom Gray or Ed Ferris on bass. Fully half of the tracks (1-12 and 20) feature this configuration of the band. [Note: Duffey and Gray would later team up again in The Seldom Scene in the early seventies.]

For the most part, the Country Gentlemen kept things fairly traditional. Even when they covered more contemporary material (Dylan's "Girl from the North Country," Gordon Lightfoot's "Redwood Hill," Graham Nash's "Teach Your Children"), it really wasn't much of a stretch to treat these songs as bluegrass numbers. It is worth noting, however, that the two Sugar Hill numbers have the Country Gentlemen updating their sound by adding a drummer.

My only complaint is that the Doyle Lawson years (1971 through 1979) are represented by a mere four songs. [That's Lawson singing lead on "Dixieland for Me."] That quibble aside, this is a fine collection and an enjoyable introduction to this amazing band. [Running Time - 72:16] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Counrty Gentlemen.......2001-03-06

I grew up listening to these songs in Eastern KY. My dad was a banjo player and we spent lots of times at bluegrass festivals and the highlite of any show was the Country Gentlemen! We came to know Charlie Waller and Doyle Lawson on a personal level and these songs bring back so many fond memories. they are a must-have for any fan of bluegrass music. Matterhorn, Teach Your Children and 500 miles were my favorites and no one can sing bluegrass better than Charlie Waller. I learned these songs over 20 years ago and they still have a special place in my heart. If you love bluegrass music you will love these songs! I highly recommend them!

The folk revival frequently takes a lot of heat from bluegrass experts. When a younger urban audience and their ethnomusicologist guides began discovering and drawing attention to established bluegrass artists in the '50s, they sometimes proffered a distorted folk purism to the music--and that can rankle hardcore bluegrassers. Yet without the folk revival, bands as seminal as the Country Gentlemen would not exist--in fact, one of the band's earliest singles was a reworking of the best-known folk-revival performance: the Kingston Trio's "Tom Dooley." This four-disc box set collects the most energetic and groundbreaking work of the classic Country Gentleman ensemble--Charlie Waller, John Duffey, Eddie Adcock, and Tom Gray--as well as the equally great, early-'70s lineup of Waller, Bill Emerson, Bill Yates, and Doyle Lawson. No bluegrass band of the '60s and '70s was more influential: they brought songs by Dylan and the Beatles into bluegrass, not as novelties, but with all the soul of the standards these songs would become. But this isn't hippie newgrass either--the playing is stunning, and the harmonies grip like a vise. --Roy Kasten

I really regret that I discovered The Country Gentlemen so late in life. I don't understand how I missed them all these years but I really love their music and play it everyday. This group of CD's gives a good variety and shows the range of the Gentlemen's sound.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Country Gentlemen CDs.......2003-10-30

I have a lot of Country Gentlemen LPs and CDs since they are one of my most favorite bluegrass performers. This one, however, is unique because of the live environment. I have many of the same songs from other LPs and CDs, but actually prefer these live versions. This particular set of Country Gentlemen performers, among the many who have been with the group's main man, Charlie Waller, seems the best to me, and in front of an appreciative audience, they are clearly doing their best work. You cannot go wrong with this CD. Worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome addition to any collection.......1999-03-28

Given that this project was recorded just after the release of "Award Winning", it is a same it lay dormant for a while. This project is the classic example of the class act of Waller/Lawson/Emerson/Yates. From the opening with "Fox on the Run" to cuts from "Award Winning" ,it is a must for any Gents fan. I wish there had been a video with this one.

You can't go wrong with a Country Gentlemen CD. I have them all, and I recommend them all. But there is something about the Waller/Lawson/Emerson/Yates lineup that stands out from all the others. I personally feel that this CD, the "Calling My Children Home" and the "Live in Japan" CD's capture the Gent's in rare form. Not meaning to take away from Duffy, Adcock, Gaudreau, Gray, Bailey, Allred, Corbett, or any of the other great historic Gents. They are all legends, and as I have said, all Country Gents CD's are recommended, but this CD epitomizes the "magic" that IS the Country Gentlemen.

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" for any bluegrass fan old or new!.......1998-12-12

This older Country Gentlemen collection is out of this world. It features Charlie Waller singing lead and Doyle Lawson singing tenor (replacing John Duffey). This is how bluegrass is done!

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Moved to tears.......2004-03-18

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

5 out of 5 stars Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

5 out of 5 stars Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02

This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

5 out of 5 stars one of the best bluegrass gospel albums I've listened to.......1999-08-21

The Country Gentlemen do a remarkable job on this album. The vocal harmony is superb. I highly recommend this album to bluegrass music lovers or gospel music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars A "MUST HAVE" for those who love Bluegrass Gospel.......1999-07-19

This album marks the beginning of Doyle Lawson's expertise that set the standard for gospel music in the bluegrass style. "A Place Prepared For Me" is a just one example on this album of the things to come from Doyle Lawson's new venture with his own band, Quicksilver.

5 out of 5 stars The standards by which others follow........1999-03-28

This project, along with "The Model Church" from JD Crowe (who had a little known tenor by the name of Doyle Lawson), set the standard for bluegrass gospel projects. The harmony, the message, the total package of bluegrass gospel. My only complaint: not enough tracks.

    5 out of 5 stars On a scale of 1 to 10, This CD is a 27!!!.......1999-01-07

When it comes to bluegrass or bluegrass/gospel, few can compete with the Country Gentlemen. And when it comes to the Country Gents, few of thier personnel lineups can match the awesome vocal/musicianship talents of Waller/Lawson/Emerson/Yates. This CD, along with the "Award Winning" project featuring the same roster are MUSTS for any fan of bluegrass or bluegrass/gospel.

5 out of 5 stars Any one looking for real Bluegrass Gospel, this is it........1999-01-03

This is one of the best gospel recordings that I have ever listened to. I give it 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Bluegrass variations from the masters.............2007-03-29

Pamela Brown steals this CD. Excellent little number with lots of rythm and of course, Charlie's baritone voice. The instrumental accompaniment on this CD is Crisp and well designed. The A Capella "Lord Don't Leave Me Here" is a good blend of voices and harmony. Excellent CD.

      5 out of 5 stars Classic '70s bluegrass.......2005-06-20

A fine set of straight-ahead progressive bluegrass from the early 'Seventies. This edition of the band featured a young Doyle Lawson, along with Charlie Waller and the boys... a couple of tunes hint at Lawson's future as a major proponent of bluegrass gospel, particularly the fine a capella group harmonies of "Lord Don't Leave Me Here," which closes the album. This album isn't dazzling or flashy, it's just a fine, solid effort by one of the most talented and professional bands of the bluegrass revival... Definitely worth checking out!
