More Filler than Hits.......1998-06-29
As with the first three volumes, too many unfamiliar songs clutter the collection, and too much AC without any variation into other early 80s genres is simply too much after the fourth CD. All original versions.

Customer Reviews:
MCA country classics from the seventies and early eighties.......2005-08-30
One of a four-volume series released in the days when CD's were a recent invention, this provides an interesting selection of country classics with a few songs that are now largely forgotten. While this is limited to recordings made for MCA and old labels that became part of MCA, it is nevertheless a very strong selection containing both a mix of traditional country and pop-country tracks.
Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn each appear twice, once together as a duet and once and once each separately. The Oak Ridge Boys also put in two appearances as they provide vocal support to Brenda Lee on Broken trust.
Terri Gibbs (Somebody's knocking) and John Conlee (Rose colored glasses) sing their best songs while Lee Greenwood sings IOU, which is perhaps his best love song. I've seen plenty of compilations titled country classics that don't justify the title, but every track here really is a country classic, just as the title claim. If you can find this album at a reasonable price, you will surely enjoy this collection.

Customer Reviews:
Eighties country from MCA artists.......2005-01-14
MCA has long been one of the most important labels in country music and this collection presents sixteen of their best artists, each represented by one of their major hits, all recorded between 1979 and 1986. Some, like Waylon Jennings (here singing Rose in Paradise) and Merle Haggard (opening the set with I think I'll just stay here and drink), were only with MCA briefly but that was all the excuse needed to include them. Tanya Tucker was with MCA during the latte seventies and is represented here by Can I see you tonight, an excellent song that is often overlooked.
Other artists were with MCA for much longer including Barbara Mandrell (I was country when country wasn't cool), Steve Wariner (Some fools never learn), Don Williams (Lord I hope this day is good), the Bellamy Brothers (Lie to you for your love), the Oak Ride Boys (American made), Conway Twitty (I'd love to lay you down), Gene Watson (Fourteen carat mind) and Lee Greenwood (God bless the USA) - these artists were MCA's leading country stars for much of the eighties. Conway is also represented by a duet with Loretta Lynn (It's true love).
The album also includes Guitar town (from Steve Earle's outstanding debut album), Common man (from John Conlee, a great traditional country singer that is generally ignored these days), I've been around enough to know (from John Schneider, famous for his role in the TV series, Dukes of Hazzard, but an outstanding singer too) and You're the best break this old heart ever had (from Ed Bruce, another largely forgotten singer).
Most of these songs were number one country hits and the others were not far away. While this wonderful selection is out of print, most if not all of the tracks are available on more recent releases by the individual artists - however, if you get a chance to pick this up, it is well worth buying at a reasonable price.

Customer Reviews:
Modern Country Collection of "Almost" Greatest Hits.......2002-09-03
"The Greatest Hits of the '80's Volume I" boasts an impressive list of both contemporary and well-established country artists. It's an amiable, easy to listen to album that serves best as background music. Although it is referred to as "greatest hits", I didn't find it to be the "best of" them by any sense of measurement. The more memorable tunes were "1982" by Randy Travis; "The Bed You Made For Me" by Highway 101; "I Fell In Love Again Last Night" by The Forester Sisters"; "Swingin'" by John Anderson, and the ever right out of the box man himself, Hank Williams, Jr. singing his lively "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight." The remainder of the songs are out-classed by better releases from each of the respective artists. A good album for sure, just not a great one.

Lives Up To It's Name---Greatest Hits!.......2002-09-03
A far cry better than Volume I, "Greatest Country Hits of the '80's Volume II" is a wonderful selection of country tunes you'll want to play over and over again. This gem of an album truly shines. Starting lively with "Guitars,Cadillacs" by Dwight Yoakam, the pace softens with Highway 101 singing "Somewhere Tonight" (a personal favorite), The Forrester Sisters "(I'd Choose) You Again", and "On The Other Hand" by Randy Travis (another personal favorite). "I'm Just An Old Chunk Of Coal (But I'm Gonna Be A Diamond One Day" by country legend John Anderson adds a nice upbeat tempo that steers the album down a meandering country lane that leads to Hank Williams, Jr.'s foot-stompin' "Born To Boogie." From lively to lovely, the delightful collaboration of Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris singing "Those Memories Of You" is an album highlight, followed by Crystal Gayle and Eddie Rabbit crooning "You And I." "Country Club" by Travis Tritt provides the perfect prelude to "Long Hard Road (The Sharecropper's Dream)" performed by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band; which tells the story of a poor sharecropper's life--an American country classic, and a befitting ending to a fine country album.
