3 out of 5 stars The Skeleton Key - sounds of the old South.......2007-04-11

Dark, stormy listening to take you to the marshlands of New Orleans - at times, clearly a soundtrack, but with tracks from the likes of Robert Johnson and the hoodoo beats of Iko Iko, you'll suddenly feel an inkling for Gumbo like a true bayou-dwelling Creole.

4 out of 5 stars contains every compositional piece from the movie.......2006-08-04

This CD contains what I thought was every compositional piece from the movie. I was hoping the CD in general would be a little more up-beat and personally I found it a little bit boring to listen to. Listen carefully to the music of the movie becuase that is exactly what you get.

5 out of 5 stars good soundtrack.......2006-01-13

If you are fan of the blues, or you simply enjoy eerie instrumental tunes, this soundtrack is for you.
It is very rare for me to find a soundtrack that contains all the songs i liked from a movie. This is the case! It even has Papa Justify's conjuration of sacrifice, those drums really take you to New Orleans Hoodoo streets. A great complement for the fans of the movie .

4 out of 5 stars Review from Equalmusic.com.......2005-10-28

If you are jonesing for the way New Orleans' used to be or are kicking yourself hard because you never made the pilgrimage down before the recent tragedy, then the soundtrack to The Skeleton Key is your best bet. Like the movie, the soundtrack transports the audience into the bayou culture with such ease that at times it's almost hard to believe that you're not in fact below the Mason-Dixon Line. Released on Varese Records, it is the perfect accompaniment to the film.

Composer Edward Shearmur and the Hollywood Studio Symphony bring the flick to life with their bone chilling orchestrations that can creep you out even in the light of day. Those who dig the horror aspect of the film will be pleased with the inclusion of "Conjure of Sacrifice," a spoken track key to the movie's plot. However, the real reason to buy this release is not for its freaky facets but for its spotlight on a few of the most influential blues artists of the twentieth century.

For anyone beginning to cultivate an interest in blues, this is a great foray into the genre and its heavy hitters. First off is Robert Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen." Johnson, who many have dubbed the father of modern rock and roll, delivers his legendary take on Delta Blues with perfection. Mississippi Fred McDowell, master of the slide guitar, whether it be bottleneck or the apocryphal steak bone, lends his "61 Highway Blues" with a kind of raw integrity.

My vote however, goes to celebrated gospel musician, Blind Willie Johnson. His "God Moves On The Water" with its crackly sound quality, delivers a sucker punch to the soul. Johnny Farmer's "Death Letter" is easily the best track the recording has to offer. Farmer, the only bluesman on the disc still alive and kicking it, loans an infectious ditty that seeps into the skin and refuses to be washed away. Haunting and beat driven, the song is given a modern remix by southern rapper, Organized Noize. The marriage of Delta and hip-hop here is flawless.

Of course there are a few missteps and oddities. Blackbud's "Barefoot Dancing" is a jarring departure from the easy bayou theme. The song is ill suited to both movie and soundtrack, a definite skipper. As is Joe Washburn's "The Goldrush," which despite its melodic back music has a whiny quality that's hard to overlook. "Do Watcha Wanna" by Rebirth Brass Band is an interesting addition. It is a lively big band song that puts one in the mood for Mardi Gras. A rare gem is The Dixie Cups' version of the old Indian Mardi Gras chant "Iko Iko." Although given sinister connotations in the film, it is a fun and upbeat addition to the disc.

Seeped in New Orleans' jazz and Cajun music, the CD captures the music of The Big Easy and its surrounding parishes with forthright conviction. With the latest disaster still a fresh wound, the soundtrack as well as the film is jarring in ways that have nothing to do with the practice of voodoo. However, it is its ability to elegantly capture the culture and feel of the place that make both worth looking into. If only for a little while New Orleans's is returned to its former splendor through the music it has become known for. I suggest seeing the movie first then checking out this superb auxiliary.

5 out of 5 stars Spooky good fun!.......2005-09-01

I bought this soundtrack mostly for the song that played during the opening and end credits, "Death Letter" by Johnny Farmer (with some fun added drum beats and enhancement by Organized Noize). The song (as well as the rest of the soundtrack) was mixed by Chris Fogel. The rest of the soundtrack is a mix of old bayou songs and Edward Shearmur's shamelessly delicious score. It's spooky with a taste of the old South. It's a lot of fun and one of the most entertaining soundtracks I have heard in a while.

5 out of 5 stars Concert Energy with Studio Polish.......2006-08-08

David Gogo's been touring in WNY, and I've seen his show twice. It's filled with energy, and vocals and instrumentals are about as good as it gets in Blues/Rock. Go see him if you get the chance.

This album captures all the energy of his live performance, and adds that increment of recording quality that comes from studio recording. This disk sounds great - obviously very professional quality equipment and technique was used.

5 out of 5 stars Great new album from one of Canada's finest guitarists..........2002-10-10

"Skeleton Key" contains 11 tracks of blues/rock music that extends boundaries. He co-produced the recording in his hometown of Nanaimo, British Columbia with Rick Salt providing technical assistance and final mixes. While the instrumentation includes keyboards, guitars, drums and bass like previous releases, "Skeleton Key" demanded textures in the form of additional vocals and horns. But the essence of the music is still David Gogo's voice and his guitar.

"David's guitar playing sings and stings with every bit as much emotional authority as Jimi, Stevie and early Eric. I love it!" said Bill Henderson of Chilliwack fame upon first hearing the record.

Like his successful "Halfway to Memphis" release, Gogo is accompanied by a strong band of supporters. Bill Hicks (drums), Todd Sacerty (bass), Gerry Barnum (harmonica), Brendan Hedley and Rick Hopkins (keyboards) are back again, with additions Melisa Devost (vocals), Kyle Burrows (Rhodes), Pierre Komen, Earle Gibson and Tina Jones (horns & vocals).

The album is released in standard jewel case packaging, but a collector's edition DigiPak version is available for a limited time. This version contains extra bonus tracks and Gogo's own track-by-track description of the songs.

Along with six original tunes, Gogo covers seven interesting and varied songs by Albert Collins, Otis Rush and Willie Dixion. Rock 101's host of Sunday Blues, Storman Norman observed, "I'd swear Albert has came back to haunt us when I listen to "Backstroke". Hebe PROUD o the boy!" But, Gogo always adds a few new surprises. His twist this time is unexpected tracks by Stevie Wonder and Curtis Mayfield. Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" has been selected as the CD's first radio single and has been charted on several Canadian rock stations.

Blues Free Press in the United Kingdom wrote, "Canadian archetypal Blues-rocker David Gogo has a new album poised for release and it's a MONSTER. When delivery of "Skeleton Key" reaches your local store it will probably arrive in an armoured truck with a heavily armed police escort. Watch out, watch out coz Gogo's about!"

3 out of 5 stars Creatively abrasive.......2006-04-18

3 1/2 stars

This is a great contradiction in it's avant garde tendencies in the same vein as a Sleepytime Guerilla Museum, coupled with it's no frills catchiness and demented pop homage. When it is not overdwelling on it's sickly unique style, the bandmates pull out some personified sounds from their instruments, crafting somthing special for the demented popster in us all...Future subtle influences that this band affected are abound in this album, and the music works best when all of those elements are balanced out, making tight rhythmically, all of that loose creativity..

5 out of 5 stars mm mm good.......2005-04-05

it's true. no one can knock this album. the only sad part is that the lineup keeps changing. i got to meet the most recent crew know as "skeleton key" back in june of '04 at the metro in chicago. "secret machines" was headlining and the actual talent, skeleton key, played before them. when they were finished we left and saw the guys packing up their van. so we walked over and talked with them for about an hour. they are extremely nice. they couldn't believe that we went there just to see them.
they still play a lot of things of this album, and still, half the set was new stuff that you can only hear on a live recording of that show. go to the metro's website, i think you can pick it up there. absolutely magnificent musicians, and people as well.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites..........2004-12-24

I have to agree with the other reviews in that I'm not sure why this album never went anywhere. I still pull it out, year after year, month after month, and it hasn't left my iPod since I got the thing. Pure, gut punching, raw energy from start to finish. Drummer Steve Calhoon is an absolute beast (listen to Wide Open) and Rick Lee's percussion is insane. It's definitely different, but it rocks really damn hard, and it's a consistently great record, 7 years later.

5 out of 5 stars yeah.......2003-03-12

All I can say is this album is awesome, but if you're looking at buying it, try and find the japanese relese, you get four extra tracks, and they're well worth the extra dosh you have to fork out.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, indeed........2002-10-25

My impression from listening to this repeatedly is this is no doubt a disc comprised of material the band had under their belt for awhile; it's all expertly written and performed, with every scream and percussive whomp and clank perfectly orchestrated. No fat or filler to be found here--it's straight-ahead melodic rock and roll that nevertheless places beat and noise above all (play it loud!). And despite the fact that this rocks relentlessly, what pushes this far ahead of the rest of the pack is the novelty of the arrangments, and the band's (and producer's) willingness to strip these tunes down to their bare essentials, all rattle and thrash and wheeze and whine and hooks that burrow in (Skeleton Key is a very evocative name for their kind of music). I can't give you a favorite from this disc--it all seems to be of a piece to me--but I first heard "Scratch" on a sampler CD and was hooked. The songs are quick bursts of dynamic energy, ...This economy is to be admired, I think, and it leaves you hungry for more. This is one of my all-time favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Really, Really Good.......2005-02-07

If you want a review of The Coral in general, check out my "The Coral" review.

As for this CD, I love it. The version of Skeleton Key here is a little different from the one on thier full CD (contains a 5 second intro, this one is the better version). The second track, Oldest Path is pretty catchy, but not a work of art, no matter how fun it is. Next is God Knows. Pretty dark, slow, but really cool. I love it. Classic Rock. Next is Darkness. Also, like God Knows. Dark, but very good. Last is Sherrif John Brown. This is the band's epic: very dark, slow, long, and moral. It tell sthe story of a Priest that tells John to kill all the invalids. The chorus rings "Dont be cruel, It can happen to you" (or something like that). In the end, john gets shot for not killing the people. Really sad, deep song, and then they tell you the moral of it. Peronsally, my favorite song by The Coral.

As for thier music, The first two tracks are fast and fun, but the last three are dark and slow. If you listen carefull, you can hear thier influences: the sound from House of the Rising Sun by The Animals is here (a bit slower though),and other sounds of classic rock bands. But make no mistake. thye are not classic rock. They Are The Coral.

The only bad part of this CD is thats its too damn short. The musci video included of Skeleton Key is pretty good, and explains the sudden slow part in the middle of the song (pretty cool. Those guys they meet in the video look strait out of Pink Flyod's The Wall movie). There is no booklet with lyrics, just a paper with the cover and a band photo on the back. I recomend this. Great stuff here.

4 out of 5 stars Innovative but not pompous..........2005-01-04

This is a 5-song EP originally released by this Liverpool quintet in 2002. I would describe their music as being innovative but not pompous as they sound like they're having a lot of fun. I think they think that they are really pirates masquerading as musicians. I would love to see these guys live. The influences that I pick up are all over the place...from Captain Beefheart, Madness, Frank Zappa, early Pink Floyd, The Beatles, XTC, and Camper Van Beethoven. But if you are interested in checking out this band you are better off with their full CD simply called The Coral.

4 out of 5 stars Solid gold.......2003-09-27

Call them the pirates of rock. This is music to listen to in the car on your way to "Pirates of the Caribbean" -- solid, gritty rock with a mishmash of older influences like Pink Floyd and Zappa. Somehow it's all woven together into a very satisfying whole in the EP "Skeleton Key."

"I am shipwrecked on the rocks!" shouts the rollicking "Skeleton Key," which then melts into a mix of eerie music and bellowing vocals. "The Oldest Path" is catchy and a bit more mournful. The EP then slips into quieter ground with the meditative "God Knows," horn-laden "Darkness," and steadier, slightly folky-sounding "Sheriff John Brown."

Those just getting acquainted with the Coral will find this a good display of their talents. While the band seems to excel in boisterous rock, "Skeleton Key" also shows that they can handle milder, quieter songs with a variety of tunes and lyrical styles. The vocals range from smooth to scratchy.

While "Skeleton Key" is a satisfying mini-album, it will probably leave listeners wanting to check out the Coral's self-titled album (which contains the title song). Recommended to fans of Britpop, roiling rock, and the high seas.

5 out of 5 stars thank god.......2003-01-05

If you have read any of my reviews in the past you will come to realize that I like artists that at times might be jumping genres and that the music seems to be all over the place.
Well Coral doesn't dissapoint. picking up where Syd Barret left off, these guys carry the psychedelic banner proudly. i can't wait to buy the full release

I really enjoyed this album. I recommend it to anyone who likes Mr. Bungle or Ween, or even faith no more. It's pretty mellow for being so poppy, except for Barker of the Dupes, which is upbeat. I think it's the best of their albums

3 out of 5 stars Decent, but lacking some of their original bite.......2006-04-18

The principle gutairist, songwriter, whoever it is, can write a decent song in his sleep, but he is lacking the unique interplay that made this band's sound so special on balloon. Many songs on this album come of as something that Failure could have wrote, not that that is inherently bad, but it just sort of tarnishes the sacredness that made the first album some sort of underground phenom... Alas, welcome to the followups of so many powerhouse albums.

3 out of 5 stars wish they were still the original band.......2005-03-27

If you are considering this album, do yourself a favor and check out their first album from 1997 also: Fantastic Spikes Through Balloon. That earlier band is almost gone now, except the frontman and this album is not quite as noisy and strange as their wonderful first effort. Still, this is pretty good, just more produced and mainstreamish.

5 out of 5 stars Fat Albert and his junkyard band would be proud!.......2004-08-10

I saw these guys recently in Tampa for the first time, and was not at all prepared for the spectacular spectacle that ensued.

Simply put: do not miss these guys live.

I always just innocently assumed that it was the drummer who came up with all the odd clinks, clanks and whatnot that make up the brilliant percussion on all of Skeleton Key's songs. Instead, they actually have a guy that plays his very own "junk kit," composed of upturned buckets, pipes, stacks of broken cymbols, an empty propane tank, and what appeared to be miscellanious auto parts. This guy really steals the show as he does a frenzied dance, almost as if in a trance, reproducing faithfully all of his studio work. This is not to knock the rest of the band, who also put on a great show, but I have to say that the junk guy truly shines onstage.

5 out of 5 stars tremendous album.......2004-02-17

i'll be honest...i saw them with tomahawk and the melvins.i was extremely pleased with such an awesome opening act.then i actually fell asleep during the melvins.that's not a joke.i loved this band, bought this disc and then fell asleep during the melvins.i've only heard this album by skeleton key, their first album is in my bag still wrapped,i just bought it because i have been itching to hear more.i'm the type of person who plays a cd out for a month then it comes back out in year.but this album has been in and in for 9 months. but it now, you will have no regrets.

5 out of 5 stars No one plays makeshift percussion as well as Skeleton Key.......2001-06-18

This is a gem of a cd, one reason because you can't find any thing else by them in print anymore(the closest you can get is that every member of skeleton key minus the guitarist are in the band enon, and skeleton key do one song with the melvins on "the crybaby"), and the other reason is that the infectious up and down grooves, and gritty chemistry of the band keep you wanting to listen to the (sadly only) 6 songs over and over again. I highly recommend this to anyone who is into unique music.

5 out of 5 stars The Skeleton Crew...........2000-10-20

This is a great little CD. For some strange reason their sound reminds me of "Good Morning, Captain" by Slint. They are awesome, bombastic, percussive musicians who's music is equal parts Harry Partch/Tom Waits and straight up hardcore/rock. It is atmospheric and ultra creepy, the perfect soundtrack for the scene of some supernatural crime. Plus, how can you not love a band that titles one of their instrumentals "Hoboerotica"?!?

Recommended if you like Slint, Tom Waits, John Zorn, Mr. Bungle, hardcore or indie rock.
