5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2005-10-28

I used to own an old cassette of theirs and played it untill it fell apart. I had looked in stores over the years for a CD and could never find one, untill now! I love listening to their songs, they have a wonderful sound.

5 out of 5 stars Brief stardom for rocking country sisters.......2003-04-19

Janis and Kristine Oliver began singing as a duo in 1973 but it was not until 1986 that they hit big. Though their music was firmly rooted in tradition, they managed to give it enough of a contemporary edge so that they could appeal to a wider audience. Back then, Janis was married to Vince Gill. By the time that Vince reached his own peak, the Sweethearts of the rodeo were already past their commercial peak, though they continued to record excellent albums.

This twofer covers their peak commercial years, including all their hits. Their biggest hits were Since I found you, Midnight girl sunset town, Satisfy you, Blue to the bone and a sensational cover of the Beatles classic I feel fine. The other tracks here include many fine original songs, plus a cover of the Everly Brothers classic, So sad to watch good love go bad.

Janis and Kristine could sing ballads, but what they really liked to do was rock. This is good time country music at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Sweethearts Take Me Back to My Youth!!!.......2001-10-24

When I sent for this CD, I expected to have a bit of nostalgia for the good-old-days, but I wasn't really sure that I would enjoy the music. Needless to say, it's great for old fans like me and for new fans who may not have heard their harmonies. If you like music, you'll love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Sweethearts of the rodeo are just that, sweet. Real sweet........2001-03-23

Sweethearts of the Rodeo is a truly excellenty performed, and produced album. Janice Gill (Country great Vince Gill's wife) is supurb, and Kristine Arnold helps out all the way, and she does it great. There are eight tracks on this CD, and seven of them could make it on their own. This is a well put together, well produced, and well recorded album. In short, this is great. If you like country, you'll love this. BTW: Anybody out there in country land know what Sweethearts of the Rodeo actually mean? Lets see how many real Country folk we have out there. Give us some feedback. Christopher L. Ford.

The Vickers Sisters and the Sweethearts of the Rodeo is hot to.
Angie and Katie sing on You Never Talk Sweet in 1996. Kim Conway Sing on her 1991 hit Devil and Your Deep Blue Eyes. Sisters is good for the Sweethearts and the Vickerses. Jody Green sing on the Everly Brothers' So Sad in 1989.

I have looked for this CD when in music stores I finally just ordered it and it is better than I had hoped.

5 out of 5 stars Better than their debut album, and that's not easy........1999-09-20

Why I didn't get this album when it was released I'll never know, but I'm trying to make up for lost time by playing it 3 or 4 times a day. If your feet (and hands, and everything else) don't move to PRETTY WORDS, ONE MORE NIGHT and especially MULESKINNER BLUES, you're comatose. These tracks, along with I WON'T CRY, which has a Marty Stuart HILLBILLY ROCK-like pounding beat, absolutely shake the shingles. And on the more sublime side, they take a song I'd almost forgotten about, Donovan's CATCH THE WIND, and paint a masterpiece of harmony with it. THE INN AT INNISFREE isn't a country song, but who cares? Gorgeous.

It's a pity that Janis and Kris seem to be history as a team, unless I've missed some news. They defined Harmony in the 80s an 90s on level even greater than the Everly Brothers did 30 years earlier. And BEAUTIFUL LIES was their best.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful collection of song's........1999-06-16

janis & kristine are two great singer's,and this ablum show's their singing talent very well."I KNOW WHO YOU ARE" & "catch the wind" are two beautiful song's,every song is good.and janis gill is a great songwriter.you can listen to this cd again and again.

2 out of 5 stars Great music, shame about the CD quality.......2007-01-21

The music of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm is quite hard to find on CD, with only a handful of their tracks previously available scattered on various compilations. However, my joy over finally having a whole CD of their recordings turned to disappointment when I listened to it, to find that the tracks seem to have had some kind of heavy audio compression applied to them. Either someone processed the tracks trying to eliminate the noise and inadvertently eliminated half the music, or this CD is a questionable burn of second-hand low-quality MP3s. This is telephone-quality stuff. But i guess on the bright side, at least it's now available.

The recordings are of mid 40s Jubilee Radio Show Broadcasts, and include introductions by Ernie "Bubbles" Whitman

For most folks in Nashville, the fall from a mega-company like Columbia Records to a small outfit like Sugar Hill would be a tragic blow, but it may be the best thing that ever happened to the Sweethearts of the Rodeo. On their first album for Sugar Hill, Rodeo Waltz, Janis Gill and Kristine Arnold (who grew up in Southern California as the Oliver sisters) have traded in the electrified country-pop sound of their CBS albums for acoustic country-bluegrass arrangements, which suit them far better. The country-folk approach really clicks for the Sweethearts of the Rodeo, perhaps because their voices and sensibilities are so intimate and delicate to begin with. The wooden echo of the picking by mandolinist Sam Bush, fiddler Stuart Duncan, and others has a gentle quality that fits the sisterly harmonies just right. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of those rare sessions that all come together..........1998-07-15

This is one of those albums you just want to listen to over and over again. The musicans (Sam Bush and Co. are the best in the business). The harmony, material, and musicians make this a rare treat for country music lovers. It is refreshing after listening to so many "production" albums to actually hear the way it should be done! I don't rate many albums 5 star, but this heads up my list.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent acoustic country music.......2005-04-13

Two sisters, Janis (then married to Vince Gill) and Kristine, briefly achieved success in the late eighties following the success of the Judds, but that success only lasted for two albums. This was their third album but it seems that the radio stations and the fans were already looking elsewhere. This album, brilliant as it is, made much less impact than it deserved to.

The set opens with Uphill all the way, a great up-tempo song and one of several songs here that Janis wrote or co-wrote. After that come two superb ballads (He doesn't tell me anything, You look at love that way) before another up-tempo song, This heart. So the album continues, with a mix of songs of varying tempos, all equally brilliant.

If you enjoy the music recorded by the Judds in the eighties, you will also enjoy the Sweethearts of the rodeo, who took their name from the famous Byrds album and emphasized the connection by using similar artwork for the cover of this album.

This 16-track duet package is something of a companion piece to 1993's Saturday Night & Sunday Morning and 1998's Clinch Mountain Country, both of which offered a dazzling array of duets featuring Ralph Stanley singing with an A-list of country and bluegrass stars. Clinch Mountain Sweethearts, which features only female partners, is a worthwhile collection, though somewhat less focused than its predecessors. Country, folk, and pop stalwarts such as Iris DeMent, Lucinda Williams, Dolly Parton, Gillian Welch, Chely Wright, and Joan Baez display their artistry as they square off with Stanley at the microphone. But the real treats are Stanley's duets with less celebrated talents like Gail Davies, Melba Montgomery, Valerie Smith, Kristi Stanley, and Jeannie Seely. --Bob Allen

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars.....Bluegrass Is Alive And Thriving.......2003-02-09

I have had in my collection for decades the numerous albums the Stanley Brothers cut for Starday, King and Gusto in the fifties and sixties. However, I'll admit it wasn't until Ralph Stanley's resurrection in popularity with the whole "O Brother" phenomenon that I began noticing his more recent labums.

The premise to this 2001 Rebel release was simple: Find some of the best female vocalists in the business and revisit some of the old Stanley Brothers classics. I was skeptical at first, but after the first notes of "Ridin' That Midnight Train" with Iris DeMent, any misgivings I had disappeared.

Although no less moving, Stanley performs "Oh, Death" with Gillian Welch--not a capella, but with the backing of the Clinch Mountain Boys. Other highlights are Dolly Parton's version of "Loving You Too Well," Sara Evans' "Are You Tired of Me, Darling," Lucinda Williams' "Farther Along" and Valerie Smith's "I'll Remember You in My Prayers." Truth to tell, these are are all lovingly performed songs.

As the reigning patriarch of bluegrass, it's encouraging to see Ralph Stanley (who was 73 when these recordings were made) not only receive the recognition he deserves but for helping pass the torch so bluegrass will continue to thrive into the 21st Century. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars In Dreamland with Dolly, Iris, Melba, Chely, Lucinda, et al.......2002-08-01

This is the third album of Ralph Stanley's with guests (or is it the fourth? - I think Saturday Night Sunday Morning was recorded as two separate albums) - and came about because the ladies were seriously under-represented on the earlier projects, yet clearly indicated a desire to record with Ralph. The success of John Prine's In spite of ourselves (featuring another stellar cast of ladies, also including Iris, Melba and Lucinda) would have dispelled any doubts about the viability of such a project.

Though under-represented, some notable ladies did appear on the previous albmus (Clinch Mountain Country and Saturday Night Sunday Morning), including Connie Smith (who also appeared on that John Prine album), Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris. Patty Loveless, Rhonda Vincent and Laurie Lewis, so they leave the stage to others this time.

All the songs are beautifully sung and well chosen. On albums like these, your favorites tend to depend on which guests you like best, but there are so many here that I love, although Dolly is my favorite singer.

Valerie Smith recorded a stunning debut album (Patchwork Heart), listed as Limited Availabilty by Amazon.com - a definite contender for my favorite bluegrass album. I haven't heard her second, Turtle wings.

It's great to see Jeannie Seely back in the recording studio, singing a lovely version of I'm ready to go.

Kristi Stanley (Ralph's daughter-in law) makes her recording debut here, and acquits herself well. It remains to be seen whether she records anything of her own.

Patty Mitchell, who also puts in a great performance, was once a member of the Dixie Chicks. Their music pre-Natalie was very different, much more solidly traditional (way off the mainstream - I could never imagine a major label wanting them), as evidenced on their Little ol' cowgirl album, one of three unavailable early albums, not listed by Amazon.com.

Then there's Pam, Maria, Sara, Gail, Joan, Gillian and the five in my headline .... each and every one of them makes a magnificent contribution. For Iris fans, there's a real treat - she gets to do two songs.

So there you have it - a great bluegrass album of love songs, featuring fifteen magnificent ladies, some world-famous like Dolly and Joan, some complete unknowns like Patty and Kristi and the rest somewhere in between, yet all putting in strong enough performances such that nobody really stands out from the rest - and that makes for a great album.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional Bluegrass.......2002-03-12

How can any album go wrong with Ralph Stanley at the helm! These albums that have been created with Stanley and friends will go through many generations of music listeners as the best that bluegrass has to offer....I love ya Ralph....

5 out of 5 stars Ralphs Band in Rare Form.......2002-02-17

Having made the pilgrimage to Ralph's mountaintop Memorial Day festival last year I can tell you that even the best recording can't do justice to Ralph and his band live. That said, this album rocks! Ralph and his producers have done a fine job pairing him with some phenomenal singers. His band sounds like they were born to play together. These guys are special! "Lil Willie" gets my vote as the best track among several stellar cuts. That fiddle tears me up every time I hear it.

My heartfelt wish is that this wonderful music continues to find its way into popular culture. We need Ralph unplugged on MTV! If it worked for Tony Bennett it can work for Ralph (although Ralph would be a considerably more challenging cross-over project!). If this NYC-raised Van Halen - George Clinton lover can "get it", anyone can!!

5 out of 5 stars This hits the Spot!.......2002-02-08

Making a distinction between this recording and "pure" bluegrass seems beside the point to me. Ralph Stanley has simply assembled some of the very best female country/bluegrass vocalists around, matched them up with great tunes and produced a CD that spends A LOT of time on my stereo system. Iris DeMent and Ralph are terrific, so much so that I hope they record again together real soon. But then I would buy a CD by Iris DeMent and virtually anyone. Don't pass this album up, no matter what sort of music you prefer.

    5 out of 5 stars L Starr.......2005-10-14

I remember listening to Lucille Starr in the 60s, and for so long I have tried to get the album and then recently I just typed in Lucille Starr and voila, I now have my cd and with millions of sentimental memories and to this day I still adore her music, so now I can continue to listen to those golden days when Lucille started out.
Thanks Amazon for re-erupting my youth with this awsome cd of Lucille Starr.
