Album Description

THE ALBUM: Early country music was primarily dominated by men, often over shadowing the women of the genre in historical retrospectives when it comes to their many contributions to the music, and their all-important female perspective on life, love and the wicked ways of the world. Fortunately, the ladies of Dallas' influential Big “D” Jamboree were more outspoken and assertive in their willingness to give the men a run for their money when it came to whoopin' it up on stage and putting on a show to remember.

Dragon Street follows up its acclaimed double CD The Big “D” Jamboree Live!, Volumes 1 & 2 with this long-overdue 29-track tribute to some of the most fantastic female performers to grace a stage in Texas...or anywhere! This set combines rare studio cuts and live performances together on one CD, bringing sharp focus to such overlooked performers as Helen Hall, Sherry Davis, and Doreen Freeman; as well as legends such as Janis Martin, Wanda Jackson, Charline Arthur, and more. Folks, it doesn't get much better than this!

5 out of 5 stars Neko Case, you sly FOX.......2007-02-11

I bought this today at the BuddyHolly Museum in Lubbock, Texas. I am a real music buff, if there is such a thing, and I was caught by surprise when I spotted this. Then I played it.

Holy ShipBuilding, Waldo. This is the STUFF!!

I'll bet Neko Case knows these recordings inside out.

I am adding to what has already been written here. Read the first review for exact describers.

5 out of 5 stars Biased opinion.......2005-12-21

My mom was one of the singers on this album. Pat Smith, who later became Patricia Johnson, had the biggest, most beautiful voice I've ever heard. Unfortunately, she passed away earlier this year in May and we miss her terribly. Her voice brought enjoyment to many...

5 out of 5 stars WHERE ARE THE LOVETT SISTERS NOW ?.......2003-10-18

I GREW UP IN DALLAS LISTENING TO THE BIG D JAMBAREE AND I LOVED ALL OF THE SINGERS, ESPECIALLY TWO VERY YOUNG GIRLS CALLED THE LOVETT SISTERS. I LOVED HEARING " BACON AND EGGS", AS I USED TO LISTEN TO THEM SINGING IT LIVE ON THE RADIO AND WATCHING THEM SING IT ON TELEVISION. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM? ARE THEY STILL PERFORMING ?

4 out of 5 stars Early "Girl Singers".......2001-10-13

Some of these are better than others, but none are dogs. I history lesson, if you are interested.

Various Artists The Gals of the Big "D" Jamboree Dragon Street DCD70101

For the uninitiated, the Big "D" Jamboree was a weekly variety show broadcast over 50,000 watt radio station KRLD beginning in the late 1940s. It was a weekly event much along the lines of similar music-oriented live entertainment programs like the Grand Ole Opry, the Louisiana Hayride and the National Barndance. Held weekly at a Dallas, Texas wrestling venue called the Sportatorium, the Big "D" Jamboree's heyday ran from the late '40s through the early '60s. In continuing their superb Legends of the Big "D" Jamboree series which in addition to a wonderful 2-CD various artists collection from last year (The Big "D" Jamboree Live)as well as other single artist releases focusing on such stalwarts as Groovy Joe Poovey, Johnny Dollar, and Gene Vincent, Dragon Street Records rolls out what is easily its most humdinger collection yet with The Gals of the Big "D" Jamboree. Clocking in at over an hour's worth of music spread cross 29 tracks that are culled from a combination of live material, studio demos and 45 RPM records, it's a collection that presents both known quantities (Janis Martin, Wanda Jackson, Charline Arthur) and unknowns (Helen Hall, The Lovett Sisters, Abbie Neal & the Ranch Girls, Pat Smith, Doreen Freeman, Sherry Davis, Betty Lou Lobb and Ramona Reed) from the Big "D" gal corral. In comparison to many of their Nashville feline country contemporaries, the gals were a more hard-edged, saucy bunch of honky tonkin' ladies for whom a cigarette and a bottle of beer with the fellows was likely never out of the question. More importantly, these were Virginia Slims types (remember those old TV ads??) who weren't afraid to speak their mind in song. Heck, all it takes is a listen to piece-of-mind pieces like What Else Does She Do Like Me? which opens with the not so lady-like line "She smokes the same sort of cigarettes as I do" or Wasted Life about a malcontent husband who can't pry himself from the barstool ("Sitting all alone at the bar / No one knows or cares where you are / You don't care about your home / You don't care about your wife / You're a perfect example of a wasted life") to understand what I'm talking about. Each of those cuts come from the tough-talking honkabilly pepper pot Helen Hall who takes the cake in this collection. Quite frankly, it doesn't get more hardcore honky tonk country than numbers like these and even better, The Gals of the Big "D" Jamboree is filled with plenty more from where these two came from. All too often overshadowed by their C&W male contemporaries, The Gals of the Big "D" Jamboree is an insightful look at a vital chapter in the annals of female country music. Accompanied by a deluxe, 20-page booklet featuring discography, artist biographies from noted Texas country music historian Kevin Coffey, and an intro by current female rockabilly star Kim Lenz, this is a first rate package overflowing with hot tunes that comes highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Twice The Listening Fun!.......2007-02-10

A terrific comp of REAL female country singers. It's a shame we have to buy imports of our own artists to get the good stuff. Worth the price for the song Twice The Lovin' In Half The Time alone.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary RARE package of early Country Female Vocalists.......2005-02-27

This is the most awesome collection of early country female vocalists I have ever seen!!! Looking for a CD with Jenny Lou Carson? Goldie Hill? Molly O'Day? Rosalie Allen? How about certified country queens Kitty Wells, Jean Shepard, and June Carter singing rare songs. If that's not enough how about Patsy Cline singing a track PREVIOUSLY NOT KNOWN TO HAVE EXISTED? Well, folks this is what you have been looking for!! Here are 23 performances from everyone from the legendary Minnie Pearl to the quite obscure Judy Perkins, Ann Jones, and Penny Nichols. These recordings were apparently recorded for radio broadcasts on particular programs but no information alas about where they came from is noted. Highlights include Rosalie Allen doing a superb cover of "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels", Goldie Hill singing the pop hit "Make Love to Me", and Patsy Montana singing a comic novelty "Mama Never Said a Word About Love". And yeah, and Patsy Cline singing a fine, previously unheard number called "When A House is Not a Home". This is a CD that NO lover of country music history should be without.

                Product Description

This traditional country CD has a very special sound. The pickers and players on this album are incredible and is like a who's who in Nashville - Mr. Herby Wallace, Mr. Willie Rainsford, and Mr. Harold Bradley just to name a few. The Jordanaires join her on two of the songs... and they really help bring those songs to life. "Margie Cumbie sings Country" was produced by Robert Thames and recorded in Nashville at Gene Breedens Recording Studio and Tower Master and Recording Studio. She has some great songs - three covers and the rest are original songs written by some fine writers.
