5 out of 5 stars JELLY ROLL the Bonus Track.......2003-06-16

Vernel Bagneris' tribute to Jelly Roll Morton, JELLY ROLL won both the Drama Desk and Lucille Lortell as Best-Off Broadway Muisical (1994-1995).It also won Mr Bagneris an Obie for his portrayal of Mr Morton. A cast album is available . DR JAZZ however, wasn't included in JELLY ROLL.Finding another Jelly Roll number by Mr Bagneris is a treat indeeed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Hot Dixieland.......2001-01-18

The music on "Fireworks" is a compilation of performances recorded at the Riverwalk Landing in San Antonio between 1990 and 1994. I had the good fortune to see the Jim Cullum Jazz Band there on several occasions prior to the time of these sessions. The album was recorded during live broadcasts for NPR. Cullum and his group play good swinging Dixieland Jazz. Two of my favorite tracks on the album are Cullum's rendition of Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean A Thing" featuring vocals by Clark Terry and Benny Goodman's "7 Come 11" featuring Lionel Hampton and Allan Vache. Vache really brings back memories of the Goodman style. Terry is also featured on a rather goofy presentation called "Mumbles" which is bound to bring on unbelieving chuckles from any listener.

If you like great improvisation and hot, feel good, hard driving Dixieland, you'll really enjoy the Jim Cullum Jazz Band.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great CD!!.......2006-12-10

First, the positive review of what I have heard from my new CD. They picked a great list of songs. "Silent Lucidity" is my favorite because Geoff Tate can sing absolutely ANYTHING, no matter what! And it's about time that "Ballad of Jayne" by L.A. Guns was properly put where it belongs, and not ignored. From the many awesome Great White ballads, they picked the best.

Ok, now for the criticism. Night Ranger and Alias should not have even been selected for this CD. And "The Way It Is" by Tesla was the absolute wrong song to add. "Love Song" was the most popular ballad by them, and it should have been on this CD. I was highly disappointed with that choice. "When the Children Cry" was not even sung in tune with the original at all. I didnt even know what song it was until the chorus.

But overall, I was happy with this CD and would suggest it to all the power ballad lovers out there.

2 out of 5 stars give me a break.....Metal???.......2006-01-14

This is not metal, it's old school rock and roll. Yes, it's all good music by very talented artists, but it is NOT Metal. It's not even heavy ROCK for pity's sake, yes, it's sappy ballads...

4 out of 5 stars Great Alubm, but "Metal" and "Mania"?!?.......2006-01-03

I really like this album...but another reviewer has it right, it's simply another metal ballads compiliation...albeit a VERY good one. Each song is a really inspired take on the original, some in intimate performance settings, others apparently in studio. The only song that didn't impress me much was Extreme's "More Than Words", but being an accoustic song to begin with, all they could really do is an a cappella version...which didn't impress me much.
If you are a child of the 80's hair-band, metal, and stoner music era, this is an album you will likely enjoy. It's ill-thought out sequel is *NOT* on my suggested disc list, so be thorough in your pre-purchase consideration.
As a hobbyist guitar player, I really enjoy hearing the different takes on these songs. Definitely on my favorites list!

5 out of 5 stars Acoustic power ballads.......2005-09-08

Some don't like metal associated with 80's hair rock power ballads, hey whatever. Very good acoustic performances give a new life to classics from the past. VH1 might have considered a more definitive title for this collection though.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks original feel.......2005-08-13

Not too bad of a set list, but some of the songs lack the original feel. The main ones are: Don't Know What You Got (Until it's Gone) by Cinderella and When the Children Cry (White Lion). Children Cry was a dissapointment. The original had feeling in the tone, structure, and melody. In this version, M. Tramp sounds bored.
When I Look Into Your Eyes is still lame, and I mean lyric wise. I swear if I knew better, thos words were written by a 4th or 5th grader. However, the vocals on it are powerful.
They could have chosen a better song than I Saw Red for Warrant. That version is available on their greatest hits cd. The one they should have added was the acoustic version of Blind Faith. Wow, that was so much better than the original. You have to buy the single of We Will Rock You in order to hear it, and it is worth trying to find a copy.
Silent Lucidity sounds really good, as to my surprise, Sister Christian by Night Ranger. I was never a fan, but eh...the song is decent. His voice sounds a little raspy, but doesn't hinder the tune.
More than Words by Extreme is without the guitar...and...it works, mainly because it is a dominant vocal song.
Tesla's tune doesn't belong on there. It's a filler. I know they had better ballads than that one. That also knocked a whole star for me. Fillers are common, but when it's picking greatest hits type cd's, there is no reason for filler.
Overall sound quality is good...some songs are low such as Poison's Every Rose, but that's because it was recorded back in 1991 on MTV Unplugged. Oh well, I heard there is a DVD coming out...should be interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but not good........2004-09-16

The problem I personally have with some of Felt's music is that even the best songs they create often have some little fault or annoyance within the song. It's like owning a nice older Jaguar sedan, the refinement and ride are wonderful, but you have to put up with the little electrical system failings which now stand out because everything else is so perfect and seamless. Take the song "Primitive Painters" for instance. It starts with incredible delicacy, a soaring mix of floating guitar work, then the accomodating drum line, then the nice kind voice, and then suddenly at the chorus a woman's voice flattens the original voice. It's jarring to me, and I want to skip to the next song. They should have reserved her voice for the finale. "Primitive Painters" makes me feel like I'm dying, finally leaving my withered body and encountering the indescribable beautiful Light of Heaven, and then a Light Being's voice says, "It's not your time yet, back you go." Yet I give this song 5 stars because even if a song has moments that send me into ecstasy it's easily worth it. This is some of the best music I own. Do you notice the kind of words used in their song titles? Sunlight. Whirlpool. Golden. Light. Scarlet. King. This is glorious work. The level of the music often matches the aspirations of the words. What you will get if you buy this is a collection of breathtaking, wonderfully arranged songs, matched by a few songs containing passages that mar the refinement.

4 out of 5 stars Not Belle and Sebastian, but still good........2003-03-29

I'll admit it. I got this expecting an 80's version of Belle and Sebastian. That, is not what I got, but I don't regret buying it. It's defiantly got an 80's sound. To me it sounds like a mix between the Smiths and the Cure, with a dash of the Fall. Not a bad combanation. But Belle and Sebastian fans beware, there's not a bit of twee in Felt. Just because they're Stuat Murdoch's favorite band doesn't me they'll be your favorite. But I must admit that they're growing on me, there are some brilliant songs on here like 'Penolope Tree' and 'Sunlight Bathed the Golden Glow'.

      3 out of 5 stars I Found The Reason.......2002-07-29

Felt made 10 albums and 10 singles in the 1980s. "Absolute Classic Masterpieces" contains a selection of 16 songs from the Cherry Red years. The album actually contains 18 tracks. "Index" was Felt's first single - really a solo recording by Lawrence (Felt's founder and frontman) - released on Shanghai Records in September 1979, and "Dance of Deliverance" is taken from guitarist Maurice Deebank's 1984 solo album "Inner Thought Zone." Neither one deserves more than a cursory listening. Of the 16 other recordings, only four are otherwise unavailable on CD: "Something Sends Me To Sleep," "Trails of Colour Dissolve," "Penelope Tree," and "Fortune." The rest of the tracks can be found on the Cherry Red studio albums. But as luck would have it, these are four of Felt's finest songs, all written around the time of the magnificent and ethereal debut album "Crumbling The Antiseptic Beauty" (1982).
"Something Sends Me To Sleep" is a four-track demo recorded for Mike Always's Cherry Red Records in 1981. Its funky off-kilter rhythm, impenetrable lyrics - all half-whispered sub-symbolist gibberish - and archetypal lo-fi production make it a gem of the postpunk, pre-New Romantic period in Britain. Apparently, around this time Mark E. Smith accused Felt of ripping off the Velvet Underground, but Lawrence and the band were more influenced by Wire, Subway Sect, Television, and Smith's own band The Fall. Deebank's classically-trained guitarwork has not yet, for example, degenerated into the frilly arpeggios and excessive soloing that pops up on later Cherry Red recordings.
Recorded the same year as the first album, but presumably while Deebank was on holiday, "Trails Of Colour Dissolve" consists only of Lawrence on guitar and vocals, drummer Gary Ainge on bongos, and producer John Rivers on synth bass. Like The Beatles' "Ballad of John and Yoko" (which featured only John and Paul), the song makes a virtue of artistic simplicity. The maniacal tempo and hallucinatory lyrics more than compensate for the absence of heavy production and endless guitar odysseys.
"Penelope Tree" takes its name from the 1960s fashion model. Recorded in early 1983, before bands like The Smiths, The Go-Betweens, and The Jesus & Mary Chain helped urge the British independent music scene towards a reassessment of the `60s, the song has nothing to do with the period or the model, according to Lawrence. Like the previous single, it's also missing Deebank, and perhaps for that reason, remains one of Felt's most finely executed, if overlooked, songs. (Deebank's shining moment, "Primitive Painters" - the music was entirely written down before Lawrence even touched it - gets trotted out as the acme of Felt's achievement, but their lasting impact will doubtless be the rougher, less-produced tracks).
"Fortune" was originally written and recorded for the band's debut album, but this version is a re-recording done in 1984 as a b-side for "Sunlight Bathed The Golden Glow." Gone is the earlier charm of barely audible singing and tinny guitars, but in its place Lawrence puts in one of his most heartfelt vocal performances, and Deebank is back with a finely contained exposition of his skill at producing layered and dense musical atmosphere. If Felt had a capsule philosophy (which of course, they do not) it is to be found here: "and wisdom is your virtue/ I hear them all scream/ led away to their own fate/ believe in your dreams."
The quality and uniqueness of these four tracks - as well as a handful of others - more than make up for some fairly notable weaknesses in track selection and order. It's a pity "Goldmine Trash" has been deleted from the Cherry Red catalogue, as it includes all the best tracks found on "Absolute Classic Masterpieces," while excluding the weaker ones. (The only exception is Stuart Murdoch's beloved "The World Is As Soft As Lace," also available on "The Splendour Of Fear"). It should be noted, by the way, that not all the singles from the Cherry Red label are included on this compilation. "Sunlight Bathed the Golden Glow" is the album version, not the hard-to-find single version with Ivor Raymonde-style - albeit cheap - string section. Similarly, neither "Mexican Bandits," the double A-side with "The World Is As Soft As Lace," nor "My Face Is On Fire," the A-side to "Trails Of Colour Dissolve, are included.

      4 out of 5 stars Dino-Surprise.......2001-01-04

This is a very interesting band. In a way standard slow/mid tempo guitar rock of those days, but with over the top guitar, with intense epic keyboard layers and good vocals. This results in a rather unique style, with fine subtle, melodic songs. There is a fine variation between more and less powerfull ones, which gives an uplifting positive refreshing listening. Because of its harmony it could be enjoyable for any pop/rock fan. It is sweet like sugar to begin, and afterwards shows a good robustness in that it does not get boring, but even turns out to even get better. At least, it didn't disappoint me the last 20 years. I think, with this Greatest you have a very good overview of this band.

5 out of 5 stars cliffhangers!music from the classic republic serials.......2002-03-20

      Great album!
I just sat back, closed my eyes, and relived great memories of these great serials that I saw as a kid.The music is so accurate
that it could have been lifted from the films instead of re-creations.I reccomend it highly!

5 out of 5 stars This collection far exceeded my expectations........1999-10-18

I've been a huge fan of Republic Pictures serials for many years and was thrilled to discover this collection. James King and the CinemaSound Orchestra have captured the pulse pounding tempo of those classic Republic Serials perfectly!!! The music brought back fond memories of watching Commando Cody (The Rocket-Man), the Masked Marvel and all the rest. If you are a Republic Serial fan or just love great motion picture music, this CD is a must have for your collection.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent, thrilling, action-packed, chilling.......1999-04-11

As loyal, dedicated fans of Republic Serials, we found this soundtrack to be one of a kind. When you listen to this, you will return to those thrilling days of yesteryear at the Saturday matinee, when our heros were threatened by Zardoz, the Crimson Ghost, Dr. Satan and 39013, and couldn't wait for Dick Tracy to arrive on the scene.

4 out of 5 stars The Wife Likes It.......2002-06-15

I picked this up after seeing Susan in "The Roswell Movie" and in total, it's a well-executed singer/ songwriter acoustic thing with a little fiddle and percussion. No surprises there. Relaxing to listen to, sometimes more singing than actual songs, if you get my meaning. Standouts are "The Roswell Incident" narrative and "Great Day."
