Product Description
Don't dismiss Kenny Rogers as just the bearded porker that dueted with Dolly Parton on 'Islands In The Sun' and wet grannies' panties with his TV appearances and smooth baritone growl on the country hit 'The Gambler'. Before reaching superstar status in the late 70's, Rogers was a member of the pop-rock hitmakers The First Edition ('Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Was In'), and before that, folkmeisters The New Christy Minstels (which included a pre-Byrds Gene Clark and other pronto-folk/rock notables). And by the way, his brother started the International Artists label which brought the world Roky Erickson and The 13th Floor Elevators, Red Krayola and others. This CD presents the best of Roger's 60's output. Masked Weasel. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars I lurve her... just discovered..........2005-04-11

She and Steve are great! I see them everytime they come to Boston

Check out the Weepies x-mas song: "All That I Want," you'll listen to it year 'round.

3 out of 5 stars I've Opened All My Doors.......2004-06-22

Deb Talan is wonderful and poignant singer/songwriter along the lines of Edie Carey, Anne Heaton, and Dar Williams. I have had the pleasure of seeing her live at the Iron Horse in Mass. and was pleasantly surprised. This CD is a testament to her talent. My personal favorite is "Forgiven" which can also be found on the Lovely & Amazing soundtrack, of which I also recommend.

5 out of 5 stars A Great find.......2002-11-29

Boy am I glad I found this one! I came to this cd following hearing Deb Talan's voice singing on the soundtrack to the movie "Lovely and Amazing"-and the cd more than lives up to my expectations (hey-her song from the "Lovely and Amazing," was good enough to risk buying the whole album). And the song from the movie -"Forgiven" is on this cd. I would compare her voice and songwriting style to Jonatha Brooke (as another reviewer mentioned), Shawn Colvin and Suzanne Vega. If you like those singers- you will not be disappointed with this album.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is lovely and amazing!.......2002-11-01

When I first got this CD a year or two ago I became completely fixated and didnt stop listening for months (very good for singing in the car, too!). Every single song on it is good. Her voice is uniquely expressive and the song-writing is just..., way way up there with the best, quite a few of these songs have won various songwriting awards. I have no doubt that Deb will be discovered in a big way, when the time is right. Her music and her singing have an almost spiritual quality to me (see her live!), and I really can't compare her to anyone. She also happens to have a very spiffy new web site...

4 out of 5 stars Up and Coming.......2002-07-20

How to define a "new" singer-songwriter deserving of true praise? Others compare her to Jewel or Colvin; to me, her voice is most eerily like an early Jonatha Brooke (of The Story). Her production is much like that of more recent Story releases as well. No matter the comparison, though; Deb does it better, lyrically and vocally, and it shows here as elsewhere. A poet's heart with a keen eye and a minor case of perversity, a catch in her sweet voice and a reverent respect for every note in a chord make for a woman to watch!

What we hear here is the overly polished Talan; her more recent live album Sincerely, also available from Amazon.com, better showcases her poignant imagery without drowning some songs in overproduction. For example, the classic title track "Something Burning" would be more powerful, I think, without the crashing drums and extra sound-board wizardry that make for the mediocre-est of Adult Alternative. Better production would have easily made this a five-star CD. But this album still holds some solid gems, especially "Whetstones" and the "single" Forgiven, a plaintive song of loss and self-worth. And Deb's talent is not to be missed in any forum. See a show when you can; until then, get this disk!

(note -- a version of this review was originally submitted for Talan's own release of the same album, listed as a separate product on amazon.com. Although listed separately, the albums are the same; only difference is the publisher.)

5 out of 5 stars So Glad I Found Her.......2002-02-16

It wasn't so long ago I discovered the music of Nick Drake, and was blown away by it. I quickly became depressed that no one was coming out with such innovative, amazing music today.

Then I heard Deb Talan. While her music is very different from Nick Drake's, I can't help but drawing comparisons in my head. She has a gorgeous voice, and her songs are so perfectly musical, marrying the music to the words gorgeously.

I have a feeling that Deb will be a household name a couple years from now. This is one gal you don't want to let slip by.

And to see her live is... bliss.

If you ever have a chance to see her live, do it! She is amazing. Her new one Sincerely is my favorite, but Something Burning is wonderful too! Her voice and guitar work is rich with emotion and honesty. BUY IT!

              5 out of 5 stars Wow..........2001-08-07

I think this is some of the best song-smithing I've heard in a long time. The words are alive and meaningful, matched with the music. Reminds me of early Dar Williams in lyric content and better. I'm looking forward to her next release...

Deb does a great job of using recent folk music as her base, but making it sound all her own. Her voice, songwriting, and instrumentation are all unique and work so well. Yay Deb!
