In the United Kingdom, New Zealand-born Natasha Bedingfield and brother Daniel Bedingfield have seemingly taken up permanent residence at the top of the pop charts. He's an earnest rocker with a dance music bent. She's an altogether more exciting prospect--a singer-songwriter who refuses to sit still, charging through decadent R&B ("Single"), jittery electro-pop ("I'm A Bomb") and first-class balladry ("I Bruise Easily"), invoking the likes of Beyonce and Gwen Stefani. And, okay, sometimes Nelly Furtado. An all-star production team, including former Robbie Williams collaborator Guy Chambers, makes for a debut that sounds like an instant greatest-hits set--just add cheekbones. --Aidin Vaziri

Natasha Rocks.......2007-05-09
I love Natasha Bedingfield. I got her CD from my sister. I love all the songs, my faves (hard to pick!) are These Words, Unwritten, Size Matters, I bruise easily and Wild Horses. I have her DVD, I recommend it to all 'Tasha fans. She is a fantastic signer. She knows what kind of music to do, she has a variety, love songs, dance, slow, all kinds!
WOW!.......2007-04-24
What's truly amazing about the young talent of today is how grounded and committed they are to their sound. Although this is not a deep or penetrating compilation of music (and who says it has to be deep to be good anyway?), the songs work well together as an entire package. And if you listen carefully "Unwritten," has range too. If you want something to listen to as you go about your daily weekend chores this CD won't disappoint. It's upbeat, clean and whole lotta fun.
Great upbeat set of tracks for Everyday Life..........2007-03-27
This album never fails to perk me up during a bad day. Her voice is beautiful, her lyrics are at once uplifting and incredibly soulful, and overall the entire album is like a spot of sunshine.
And above all the rest, her song "Single" *always* puts a smile on my face, and reminds me to be proud of exactly who I am and where I am in life...
Absolutely fantastic. ^.^
Words that flow like silk.......2006-11-29
Natasha is like listening to a dream. Her voice can make you smile and feel good. She has an energy that is unlike many artists that are popular now. Natasha uses that energy to power her music to levels that are sensational and memorable. I am sure most of you have heard at least one of her songs. I am also sure that if you have heard that song you have probably remembered some of the simple yet deep verses. Just thinking of some of her lyrics makes me smile on one of those dark days. I hope that she continues to bring excellent music like this to the public. We deserve more quality musicians like Natasha.
Deserves to be heard.......2006-11-07
Since I hadn't heard much from the radio I'd liked for over a year I found it hard to give into the utter likability of Natasha Bedingfield. Her brother's two hit songs that made it onto radio across the globe did little to make me eager to hear his sister's take on pop music--until my sister started blaring "Unwritten" nonstop after I came home from college this last summer for break. The melody grabs hold instantly to the listener and I myself started noticing I'd be humming the chorus throughout the day. Natasha's singing is quite impressive for a pop star--unlike the infamous pop superstar Britney Spears (hey, I'll credit that Spears did have some good vocal moments on record throughout her career and I am eager to hear new material) to which all female pop stars after are compared, Natasha sounds like an actual trained musician. Her deliciously throaty and smoky sound makes for quite an entertaining and pleasing listen--kind of like Joss but much less affected. The big gem here is the perfect "Unwritten" (evident by how huge the single has become internationally, even breaking into the hard-to-get-in market here in the US) but "Single" is pure girls-rock in 4 minutes, "Stumble" is piano-tinged, "Peace of Me" is a rock song by a pop star and "These Words" is great Hip Hop-infused pop. "I Bruise Easily" and the closing "Wild Horses." Though not a perfect record, Unwritten is definitely an album worth hearing by all.

Featuring the soothing narration of Deepak Chopra over the trancelike music of Adam Plack, The Soul of Healing Meditations serves as an introduction to meditation for neophytes and as a more advanced tool to help overcome a physical ailment and/or emotional toxicity. That may make it sound like a digital elixir, but as Chopra says in his liner notes: "We like to tell our patients (at the Chopra Center for Well Being) that the body is the best pharmacy in the world and is capable of making wonder drugs." His message here is that one can naturally prevail over serious life challenges by becoming more attuned to one's body--by relaxing and filtering out the external world, focusing on and influencing internal sensations and biorhythms, and banishing negative thoughts and focusing on the positive aspects of life. This CD is not meant as a cure-all for physical or emotional ills. Rather, it's a supplemental experience to other treatments or programs, and it shows how enlightening and empowering meditation can be when practiced properly. Its actual effects will depend upon the receptiveness of the listener. Plack's accompanying soundtrack ranges from delicate ambient tones to more active Indian music, appropriately serving the mood of each of the album's eight tracks. --Bryan Reesman

Excellent guided meditation.......2007-06-04
This is an excellent guided meditation for beginners or more advanced meditators. I have used it many times and it has helped me through some tough times. Deepak Chopra is great, and his voice is beautiful and soothing. Highly recommended.
Soothing and comforting.......2007-05-13
This CD helps me each time I listen to it. The comfort I receive is confirmation to me that it truly is healing! Dr. Chopra's voice and the different meditations is completely soothing and relaxing. I enjoy the music they have included on the CD also.
Excellent.......2007-05-07
Excellent tape. I use it a lot. Soothing, healing. I would recommend it for anyone who is serious about utilizing guided imagery for healing.
Excellent meditation instrument.......2007-03-09
The narrator's voice maintains the meditator's attention and focus. The words, music, chants and poetry utilized on this cd are exactly what is needed to slow down and bring your focus inward. If you are looking for a guided journey type cd, this is not it. This cd focuses on healing, breathing, the mind/body connection and the ability of the meditator to generate healing via meditation practice.
New to meditation? This is a MUST! .......2007-01-17
I have been working with this CD for almost a year, and I think it is incredible. Deepak takes us through a series of techniques to help create wellness via a breathing meditation, forgiveness meditation and creating awareness for what we already have created that we are grateful. This is an important step toward creating our desired future. Overall, this meditation is a very energizing experience as he gently guides us to healing. (I won't give it away) This has saved me from feeling sick at various times in my life and produced results in more ways than I can explain. It really works. I also love the music. I'm inspired and I will continue to do this daily and never get bored! Thank you Deepak!

One of the fundamental criticisms of New Age music is that it puts people to sleep. Here, Steven Halpern, one of the founding fathers of New Age, makes that his mission and, as you might expect, does an effective job of it. Drawing on catalog material from the early 1980s, Halpern builds an attractive collection of delicate, lighter-than-air sonic textures that nicely serves the intended purpose--to fill the silence with something prettier than white noise. Halpern does so by blending electric and acoustic piano, plus additional keyboards, to create soothing, improvisational, cloudlike musical abstractions that often convey the tranquil randomness of wind chimes in a soft breeze. The liner notes also promise your subconscious will be exposed to a series of subliminal, sleep-encouraging affirmations along the quiet, unstructured way. This may sound like so much frou-frou to the unconverted, but for anyone sincerely interested in a sleep aid, Halpern's disc is a certified snoozer, a New Age music box. Other New Age discs may accomplish the same purpose as Sleep Soundly, but few will do it as persuasively. --Terry Wood

Works for me!.......2007-03-23
I purchased this cd because I am a nurse who varies shifts (some days, some nights)and find that my sleeping habits can get very mixed up. I have recently begun to use this cd to help me sleep during the daytime if I am working that night. It works like a charm. The music is so relaxing and soothing. There are no annoying sounds that come out of nowhere. Like it says on the cover of the cd, you will never hear the end of the cd because you are asleep! I can vouch for that. I highly recommend this cd.
not sleepy enough.......2007-03-02
Too repetative, made me want to speed up the Brahams lullaby. Just made me agitated. However my 8 yr. old daught listens to it many nights a bedtime and loves it. I like his Chakra CD much better and find it more relaxing.
Great CD For Falling Asleep.......2007-02-09
We have purchased several CDs to help us sleep, but this one is by far the best. My husband and I was able to fall asleep pretty much before the first track is finished or at most the beginning of the second track. I don't think I can even recall what the third track sounds like... It plays Brahms Lullaby in several versions (trio, duet, solo) along with some other songs, but it does it in a way that is very soothing.
I have strongly recommended the CD to other family members and my collegues.
ZZzzzzz is right!.......2007-01-13
During the first 5 minutes I told myself this is rediculous how is this going to get me to sleep?
Well after another 5 minutes I checked out and went straight to dreamland.
I woke up refreshed and full of energy. I always suffered from not being able to fall asleep, worrying about little things. The cd is great, I can't hear my own thoughts.
I'm a dj and since using this cd my ears are no longer tired and I can mix my music properly. Love it
works wonderfully for the little ones too.......2007-01-12
We have had trouble with our 2 year old staying in bed. She seems to think night time is a good time to bounce off the walls :) We started playing this CD and within 2 nights she was sleeping soundly without trouble. She shares a room with her 4 year-old sister who loves the CD as well. She will ask to have it played every night. It is very soothing background music.

She was famous as both artist and model, infamous as political revolutionary and social libertine, and Frida Kahlo's controversial life couldn't help but seem the stuff of great musical theater. Her story is brought to the screen by director Julie Taymor, whose musical compatriot here is also her husband; Elliot Goldenthal, student of both Copland and Corigliani, shrewdly sublimates his modernism in service of the rich, evocative music and songs of Mexico and Central America. Utilizing performers that range from the contemporary (Lila Downs) to the folk-classic (Costa Rican legend Chavela Vargas; Brazilian star Caetano Veloso) and traditional (Los Cojolites, El Poder Del Norte, Trio Huasteca, Caimanes de Tanquin, and others), Goldenthal generously displays the true breadth of Mexican folk music, while seamlessly infusing it with the minimalist corners of his own underscore and some winning songwriting of his own. The result is one of 2002's most compelling soundtracks. The enhanced CD features include musical film excerpts, as well as a video conversation between Goldenthal and star Salma Hayek and text interviews with the composer and director Taymor. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Revolutionary times.......2007-05-14
I absolutely love this soundtrack! Everytime I listen to it, I feel as though I am in Mexico during the revolution and Frida's life. Everyone should choose their own life soundtrack and this one allows us to see into Frida's life more clearly.
Black Dove.......2007-05-13
Fell into the movie trying to avoid study and hang out with a jilted housemate. If I'm honest, Salma Hayek was the main draw. Wafer thin.
However, I was enraptured by the story of Frida and the amazing performance (no wonder she was oscar nominated).
I bought the soundtrack the next morning. It really got to me.This is a great soundtrack and, yes, it does help if you have seen the movie but not necessary. I loved the latin passion (highs and lows). Chervala Vargas as Elliot Goldenthal describes in the slieve was once Frida's lover. I loved her Paloma Negra. So powerful.
There is something for everyone in this long soundtrack.
Do as i have: watch the movie and buy the soundtrack. Worth the time and money.
makes me want to dance .......2007-05-07
I really enjoyed the CD, the musical selection is great and it seems very authentic.
Enjoy!.......2006-12-30
I purchased this CD after seeing the movie. The music is enjoyable to listen to and passionate as I would think Frida was. I purchased this CD a second time to give to a female Hispanic artist who identifies with the trials and tribulations of Frida. This artist now paints while listening to this CD. Her artwork not only has improved but has become popular. I defiantly recommend its purchase.
FRIDA would be proud.......2006-10-20
Simply perfection. Each song will move you. I dont really even understand Spanish ( only simple conversational Spanish) and it strums my every emotion. I just LOVE it!

Steven Halpern has more than 60 recordings in circulation, including audio projects ostensibly designed to enhance memory, wealth, and weight loss. He even has his own trademarked slogan--the Halpern Effect(tm)! (Take that, Mozart.) Thus, it's easy to view Halpern's high-volume output since 1975 less as art and more like a commodity. Gifts of the Angels, a 68-minute compilation (sampling eight albums and adding two original pieces), offers a few nuggets that suggest Halpern's music at times can stand on its own merits, detached from all of its deep-bliss, New Age pretensions. "Celestial Prophecy," is a nicely detailed (which is not to say complex) excursion on solo piano that briefly stirs the senses, and the title track from Higher Ground is a delicate space-music standout. Meanwhile, the 1970s-flashback tonality of Halpern's electric piano (one piece, "Earthrise," can be traced to Halpern's debut release, Spectrum Suite) dates several of the tracks included here. Nevertheless, the disc's pace, which drifts deeper into the ether on each of the last five tracks, is nicely constructed for those aiming to nod off into a state of contented nothingness. --Terry Wood
Customer Reviews:
I have used this CD for TEN YEARS..........2006-12-23
As a massage therapist, this is the ONLY CD I have used consistently in my practice over the past TEN years. There is something about this particular CD that I absolutely love and that has not been duplicated in other CDs I have used (literally hundreds!) Steven Halpern comes up with awesome music! I have many of his other CDs as well, but NOTHING comes close to "Gifts of the Angels". I am now using my 3rd copy and will buy another when this one is worn out. Many of my clients ASK me to use it in their massage sessions and ask me where to find Halpern's music. Superb.
Welcome to the warm embrace of angels!.......2006-08-31
When much of modern day's rock music and the civilization's pressure on people's lifestyle has a stressful and bad influence on the well being Steven Halpern's music is a blessing. The Godfather and inventor of the New Age music that has a healing and relaxing purpose makes music that puts the body in it's own rhythm and leads into a state of balance and inner peace. Gifts of Angels does all this, but adds an extra dimension with its beautiful angel song, making this an absolute world class New Age album. The music puts the brain waves in an alpha state and sometimes my heartbeat even gets down to 40 beats per minute, leading to a sense of peace and relaxation at the same time as its get me ready to meet my everyday life as a more balanced and happier human being. To have the opportunity to lie down and do nothing, just listen to this beautiful music, and let it fill your entire body with peace and comfort is a luxury that I think every human being should have the opportunity to do and that everybody needs to do once in a while. Unfortunately many people don't have the knowledge about New Age and the way it helps us to a better life. Bands like Rush, Journey and Def Leppard gives us the rush and entertainment that we need to be energetic while going to the gym or driving the car fast on a sunny summer day. Steven Halpern's music gets the body in a state of balance and peace and helps us to get more concentrated and focused. The price of this CD is not just the price of another CD, it's an investment in a better life, like buying a miracle pill that gets you healthier and helps you get away from illness and an unhealthy life, a pill that never will end.
Gift of Angels.......2006-08-21
The music is just that! It sounds like you're in Heaven. Halpern scores again!
This is truly music from the angels.......2006-03-24
I listen to this CD when I am meditating and while I am taking a bath. It allows me to relax and truly be in a state of heaven. I love it.
life saving music.......2006-03-07
I did not expect this but I was really buying this for myself, turns out my daughter likes this at night so she can fall asleep. My daughter is 4 and very active, she never seems to know when to rest and relax.
I decided to play this one night just to ease the mood of the night and she was asleep by the 4th song. We play this cd every night. thank!, you thank!, you thank you!
I love this cd because now I can have her go to sleep at a time that is normal for her age instead of an adult time.
Thanks, I recommend this cd for every one that is tense and needs a good easy winding down. I love it

Relaxing CD Using Psychoacoustics.......2007-06-08
"The music will help slow your heart rate, deepen your breathing, and move your brainwaves in the direction of calmness. Think of this CD as an acoustical balm for your nervous system to be played whenever you feel the need for peace, stillness, and tranquility." - From the liner notes
The hurried pace of overcommitted lives and manic striving is a breeding ground for stress and disease. Stress hormones bathe our delicate nervous system resulting in the fight-or-flight response once reserved for survival, resulting in fatigue, fuzzy thinking and irritability.
Fortunately, there are wonderful stress-reduction products out on the market like Dr. Andrew Weil's Music for Self-Healing: Relax and De-Stress. Joshua Leeds, an expert in psychoacoustics, has designed this CD to soothe the body's primary pulses--heart rate, brainwaves, and breathing rate.
In a sonic progression spanning 60 minutes, Leeds has selected and re-arranged instrumental compositions by renowned composers expressly for inducing the relaxation response. By arranging the musical selections so that each piece is progressively slower in tempo and simplified in melodic complexity, gentle healing sounds can relieve an overtaxed nervous system.
With lovely performances by the Apollo Chamber Ensemble, the Relax and De-Stress CD features the piano, cello, and oboe arranged by Leeds with four psychoacoustic techniques in mind:
1. Resonance - The impact of one vibration upon another
2. Entrainment - A natural process whereby heartbeat, breath and brainwaves speed up or slow down to match an external rhythm
3. Auditory Pattern Identification - Passive hearing techniques designed to relieve the mind of the tendency to "work" to figure out musical patterns
4. Beauty - Resolution between dissonance and consonance found in harmonies, melodies, and performances
Here are the eleven musical pieces found on the Relax and De-Stress CD:
* Aria Lento by Bach
* Reverie by Debussy
* Concerto for Oboe and Strings Sarabande (with nature sounds) by Corelli-Barbirolli
* Arioso from Cantata No. 156 - Bach
* Intermezzo Op. 116 No. 4 in E Major - Brahms
* Concerto for Oboe K. 314, Adagio non troppo by Mozart
* Cello and Piano Sonata in G Minor, Op. 65 Largo by Chopin
* Sonata Andante transcribed from Cello Suite No. 3 by Marcello
* Sonata in A Major D959 Andantino by Schubert
* Winter, Largo from The Four Seasons by Vivaldi
* Meditation by Moussorgsky
* Theme from Largo of "The New World Symphony" by Dvorak
I've listened to Dr. Andrew Weil's Music for Self-Healing: Relax and De-Stress several times and find it to be very relaxing. Aesthetically speaking, these aren't musical selections I'd put in my stereo to listen to for pleasure (even though they're pleasant), yet I can tell a measurable difference in both my mood and bodily state after I begin listening to this CD.
In fact, I'm listening to Relax and De-Stress right now and I'm noticing that my breathing has deepened and slowed--and that tension in my shoulders and neck seems to have melted away.
If you're looking for a soothing CD to put in the stereo after work or perhaps to listen to while you make dinner or get ready for bed, I can recommend with confidence the Relax and De-Stress compilation arranged by Joshua Leeds.
Relaxing.......2007-01-04
I use this tape in my massage practice and the people seem to like very much and I find they seem to relax easier.

The drug of all drugs!.......2007-03-27
Listen to this album with an absolutely clear head to achieve your mandatory giggling fits, laughter crises, hyperactive jumping periods, obscene gestures and spastic spasms, as you will be launching headlong into an almost-hour long headtrip.
Mindless Self Indulgence is made of the spastic, iconoclastic quartet, Little Jimmy Urine, Steve Righ?, Lyn-Z and Kitty. Their mission statement is clear; fun. Dumb, blind, chaotic and downright offensive fun that doesn't bother itself with what's appropriate, or what's not.
"Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy" is, as should be expected from the paragraph above, is a brainless, unrestrained, uncategorized, strange, hyperactive and overall wild album filled to the brim with a healthy touch of punk. The songs are short ("A 2 minute song just 1 minute and 59 seconds, too god damn long!"), fast-paced, laced with Urine's quirky vocal styles, Righ?'s punk-ish guitars, Kitty's extreme drums and Lyn-Z's almost absent but somehow extremely present bass.
The cardinal rule of listening to this album is to expect anything. One minute, it might be metal, the next, it might turn into hip hop, and next thing you know, it's full-blown nintendocore mixed in with trance/techno. You have to listen to this album with a clear head, like I said, to understand the sheer irony and unrestrained energy of it.
A perfect album by four zany musicians who just want to get stupid.
the better years.......2006-12-23
msi's fgwsss delivers several componants that raise it, at least in my eyes, to the status of best msi album ever.
first of all, mr. urine delivers the sort of vocal range he only carried up until a year or so ago. i've been to a couple recent shows, and jimmy just can't hit high notes the way he does on this album anymore. the song structures are dancable but not overly repetitive, and the sometimes nonsensical lyrics cover a wide range of topic matters which, while horribly offensive, are gloriously clever and immature. if you're ever planning on going to an msi concert, you're definately going to hear quite a few of the songs from this album, and with good reason. it has earned a well deserved place as a cult classic.
listening to msi is like listening to a child with adhd who has learned his first swears, and few things are as rare and beauteous.
Wow, This album was MINDBLOWING!.......2006-07-16
Wow, just the other day I bought a copy of the album, wow, it was pure originality. I heard a couple songs from a website that I liked, and alot of my friends, would carry the CD in their hands, so I'd figure I'd buy it, and see what it was all about. From the minute I heard it, I was hooked. 30 songs of genius. It has a very free, uncaring, fun beat, very far from any "pop" "punk-pop" or "poppy". In my opinion, my favourite song was "Faggot". This is great CD, and If your into listening to new music, just try it, I can assure you, you'll be hooked. 5 stars all the way!
Cool, intense electronic head trip . . ........2005-11-30
. . . that is, if yer a major tweak-head. Otherwise, this CD hardly qualifies as music. If yer looking for melody, you can pretty much forget it here. Since I quit doing drugs, I can only take this stuff in small doses. But it is useful for clearing the ole cranium. And as far as the "outrage factor" goes, it might tee off an uptight & conservative mom or dad, but for me, music stopped being shocking long ago and this is far from the sickest stuff I've heard anyway.
What an underrated band!.......2005-10-19
This album rocks. In the purest form of what rock should be these days. It's a new direction that I'm afraid will fizzle out and disappear. It's raw, chaotic, original and flawed. Yes, flawed. It's not perfect or refined by any means. But that's why I like it so much.
I don't think a single songs runs past 2:30 on this album, which is why we're given 30 tracks (in alphabetical order). This makes the album blaze past you really fast. It's all good, all aggressive and angry. Most of the lyrics are very satyrical and funny, but they're meant to be. It's not a serious album in any way. It's like a violent petting zoo. Loads of fun.
It must be heard to be understood, no real label covers what this music captures. It defies generes. My favorite songs are Bitches, Clarissa, Faggot, I hate Jimmy Page, and Planet of the apes. This band isn't for everyone, but it's a definate underground favorite. Worth a try.

As the folk singer-songwriter continues to incorporate more pop elements, Dar Williams conjures a whole coming-of-age era in an album that suggests a 1970s soundtrack suffused with 1960s idealism. My Better Self's opening track, "Teen for God," evokes the bouncy innocence of Bible camp and the bittersweet ironies of innocence lost. "Echoes" sounds like it could have inspired a singalong around that campfire, a secular hymn for the global village about the big impact of small actions. On Williams's revival of Neil Young's "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere," Marshall Crenshaw provides vocal counterpoint and stinging guitar, while she teams with Ani DiFranco for a disembodied duet on Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb." With its intimations of immortality, "Blue Light of the Flame" features a shimmering keyboard generating space-age atmospherics reminiscent of early David Bowie. "So Close to My Heart" and "The Hudson" (with harmonies from Patty Larkin) return Williams's music to its folk base, but much of the rest suggests rites of passage, at a time when all sorts of "better selves" seem open to possibility, with the radio always on. --Don McLeese

Meet the new Dar, same as the old Dar...Kind of! .......2007-04-26
My daughter introduced me to Dar Williams music, and ever since then I've gallen in love with her songwriting. She is a fine guitarist, decent singer, and absolutely mesmerizing in concert - especially solo.
On 'My Better Self', she comes out with some of her best work as well as some of her most uninspired. My favorite is the bluesy 'Two sides of the River', a song that draws me in with its simple but profound lyrics and fine guitar work.
She shows off a couple of political numbers in 'My Beautiful Enemy' and especially on 'Empire', where she masters such lyrics as 'Some will say that we force our words/We find that incredulously churlish". It doesn't matter which side of the aisle you're on, you gotta love this kind of poetry!
Dar also reminds us that she can still tell a story on 'Liar', a well-spun tale about being from the wrong side of the tracks. And 'Teen for God' is a both whimsical and semi-spiritual portrait of Christian youth camp and how we often get jaded in our passions as we grow.
She duets with Ani Di Franco on a decent cover version of 'Comfortably Numb', maintaining the moodiness of the original while interpreting it, not trying to reinvent it.
Less successful is her cover of Neil Young's 'Everybody knows this is Nowhere', and 'The Hudson'. Neither track really jumps out with any passion, and I often find my attention diverted easily when either of those two tracks are playing.
Dar's musical horizons continue to expand with each new release, and this CD is no exception. While much of her older stuff is definitely superior, this CD will please a good portion of her fans.
Not her best.......2007-01-14
Dar's latest CD is "My Better Self." It's a bit of a disappointment. The best song is "Teen for God," which is a typical upbeat, funny, catchy song. The rest is kinda depressing. I hope her next album has more upbeat songs.
Recharging her batteries.......2006-12-18
For those who grew weary of the didactic Williams, here's the (almost) pure pop Williams. The sound is pushed to the fore: glossy and agreeable, burnished and warm.
Alas, it doesn't distract from the album's primary weakness - a noticable slump in songwriting. "Teen For God" delivers, no doubt, and is a certain standout musically and lyrically.
However, the remaining high-profile tunes ("Echoes," "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" and "Comfortably Numb") are covers, demonstrating a reduction in Williams' former prowess.
No doubt, the covers sound lovely - but one does question the point in her choice of the old PF radio mainstay. (I'd rather hear Williams check in with something a bit more left field - like Grace Slick's "Lather.")
(Williams is presently reworking classic Dead material, so it seems her batteries are still not charged.) She'll (eventually) be back, better than ever, though; Williams is the real deal, and it shows even on a 'transitional' album.
Are we talking about the same album?.......2006-10-18
I went to Borders ten minutes before opening the day this album was released. Listening to the CD beforehand seemed like a waste of time because I love (LOVE) Dar Williams and was certain I would love this album. It stayed in my car's player for about 4 weeks before I and my fellow Dar-loving roommate admitted the sad truth: we hated (HATED) the CD. I like the lyrics for the most part, but she didn't pull the songs together this time. I don't know what sound she was going for with songs like, "Liar" and "Two sides of the River", but it doesn't work for me, and doesn't work with her voice and style in my opinion. I like the tune of "So Close to my Heart," but the repetition of the phrase 'close to my heart' immediately gets (and stays) really annoying. To be fair, I am a fan of Dar's raw stuff - Dar and guitar, and minimalist everything else and feel that to mix the honesty of her voice and lyrics with mainstream pop-culture-esque accompaniment seems vulgar. Listen before you buy - this certainly is a departure from Dar's norm; and honestly, are you all serious about loving this album so much?
Really good stuff, right up there with Mortal City.......2006-10-09
As I already said this Dar release is right on par with Mortal City. Although there will probbaly never be another "February", "The Ocean" or "Iowa" this record has some great songs of its own. The opening "Teen for God" is a biting satire against the hypocrisy of the Religious Right. The sad "I'll Miss You Till I Meet You" channels the best shades of Sarah McLachlan. The gentle "Echoes", "The Hudson" and "You Rise and Meet the Day" are definitely worth a listen. Certainly not to be missed is the excellent cover of the Pink Floyd song "Comfortably Numb" which Dar manages to put her unique spin on while still keeping it recognizable unlike a lot of covers these days. You should definitely buy this if you are a Dar fan. If you aren't you will probably still like it but I would suggest you start with Out There Live, since it offers a good overview of her career up to Before the Rain. Happy listening!

Outstanding CD.......2007-06-05
I can't say enough about this CD. It is great to meditate to. If you just want to take a 20 minute nap, it is possible with the help of Steven Halpern's music and sounds on this CD. I have it uploaded to my iPod and on a difficult migraine night I just pop the ear peices in and go to sleep listening to this over and over again on shuffle. Highly recommended!
Effortless Relaxation.......2007-03-11
This is a very relaxing CD. My husband and I play it while we are working outside or relaxing in the lanai and it fits perfectly with the nature sounds around us (birds). We also use it for background music when friends are over. Everyone enjoys it and wants to know what it is. It would be a great tape to play in the quiet of the evening to fall asleep to, or to play in a guests room for a relaxing ambiance. It is very well spent money. Thank you, Steven
Not very impressed.......2007-02-14
I got this CD with the hope it would help me relax while I meditate. I didn't care for it. Not my kind of music.
Relaxation!.......2006-11-03
I really enjoy every Cd from Steven Halpern, but this one is really my favorite. It always helps me relax and I use it a lot to drift off into a restfull sleep. I put my MP3 on shuffle because I always fell asleep and never remembered hearing the end of the CD. I would highly recommend this for relaxation. It really melts away the stresses of the day.
Unique, the Best I've Heard.......2002-09-08
Dr. Halpern's talents shine on this CD. I had many relaxation CD's, but after hearing this one, I threw away all but this one. Everyone needs relaxation for good health. This CD is the best of the best!

Album Description
MSI's music is a hybrid of Atari driven electronics with a venomous splash of ADD punk rock. There are three different versions of this release: a 10 track explicit version with a video for "You'll Rebel To Anything", an 11 track clean version with a video of "Diabolical", and an 11 track extra heavy double vinyl version. The clean and vinyl formats have two entirely different bonus tracks and all three have their own individual artwork, so true collectors will think nothing of owning them all. "MSI are, to me, how punk rock should sound in the 21st century: abrasive, brilliant, and sounding like no one else"--Rhys Fulber (Front Line Assembly). "...one of the most creative and genre-swirling outfits on the scene"--Serj Tankian (System Of A Down).

Dang, shut up and like it will ya?.......2006-07-25
Okay.... gotta say it... SHUT YER COMPLAINING ABOUT THE 'TIME TOTAL' OF THIS RECORD!!!!! You are all giving me a headache! Now, lets talk about HOW GREAT THIS ALBUM IS!!! Its what got me into MSI. Before I heard them, I DIDNT EVEN LIKE MUSIC. But when I took this cd from my friend and downloaded it to my comp, I literally fell in 'like'. Sure, it took me a few listen(s) to really get into it ((regarding the fact that I never really listened to a specific band before)) but ever since, I cant stop obessing! 'Shut Me Up' (the first song) is rawsum and to this day I can still listen to it twenty or more times in a row.
So, basically, this must be a GREAT/AWSOME/RAW album if someone like me ((like one of the pickiest people out there)) got into it. MSI is truly an addiction for me. After listening to them, I got FGWSSS, Straight to Video Single, and most of their other songs from cds like 'Tight' you cant find in most stores. Heck, Im listening to 'Thank God' right now. In fact, the other day I went to their concert!!!
All in all, if you are looking for something disturbingly freaky and original you can find it with MSI. Check this cd out dispite what other 'picky' people say. Who cares, I WOULDNT BE WRITING A REVIEW IF THEY WERENT THIS GREAT!!!!
this band sucks.......2006-07-11
my god what has the world come too....this bad is so called unique...hell thats becasue they suck worse than anyone else before them....total insult to rock/metal. This is pop.
Shite..........2006-04-18
If you like the whole new wave electro rock thing than listen to The Faint instead. Similar style of music without the crappy vocals.
Great album but very poor and underhanded marketing!.......2006-03-12
I'll break this review in to three parts. First, the review of the album itself. Second, the review of the tactics used by MSI and Metropolis Records to sell this album. Lastly, my advice on getting everything that should have been included on one album.
1. The review of the album:
Simply put, if you like previous MSI albums, Babyland or stuff like Korn you'll eat this up. It's another top notch hybrid electronic, punk/metal, lofi quasi-hip hop, quasi-post-industrial genre-bending album. I suppose this would have fallen in to the label "coldwave" circa mid-90's post-industrial labeling. It's not exactly coldwave, not exactly anything other than the sum of its influences, which seem to be mainly hip-hop, post-industrial and punk/metal. The highlights of the album are definitely "Shut Me Up" and "Stupid MF", although there isn't really a weak track here. Another bonus is a positively weird cover of Rush's "Tom Sawyer". Be sure to put the CD in your computer as there is a video for "You'll Rebel To Anything" (it's a neat collage of old 50's propaganda footage mixed with weird cartoons, vintage stock film interspersed with just general weirdness.)
2. Commentary about questionable gouging of consumer by label/band:
There is absolutely no reason for there to be three different versions of this album except to rip off the consumer. Period. In an interview Jimmy Urine said they released a clean version for people who couldn't buy the album in places like Wal-Mart. Who cares about Wal-Mart? For someone so outspoken and inspired by punk, it bothers me that he'd cave to pressures to release an edited version of anything, let alone an entire album. That leads me to believe it wasn't an effort to cater to the imbeciles who buy music at Wal-Mart but rather a flimsy excuse to release a different version of the album, with different artwork and different bonus tracks.
When I used to buy a lot of electro/industrial (circa mid-90's) I remember this type of crap burning the hell out of me. I'd buy the import of a particular artist (say, someone like Haujobb) and then a year or so later a domestic version would come out with bonus tracks. And it'd cost LESS to boot! So all the "early adopters" and people on the cutting edge would get burned over and over. I can't tell you how many CDs I bought like that when I used to buy a lot of obscure electro/industrial music. It's a trick in order to separate you from your money, nothing more. If they cared only about exposing underground music to a new audience then they'd simply license the album and release it exactly as it was originally in Europe. But I digress.
3. My advice:
Buy this explicit version, then download the bonus tracks "La-Di Da-Di" (bonus track on vinyl) and "Mic Commander" (bonus track on clean version) off teh intarweb and say fsck you to Metropolis Records/MSI for forcing us to buy three versions of the same album in order to get two extra tracks, different artwork and a bonus video (the clean version of this album has a "bonus rehearsal video for 'Diabolical'"). Alternately, if you feel like giving MSI more of your hard-earned money, you can at least get the track "Mic Commander" on iTunes Music Store by itself.
In summation, MSI are a great band and if you like punk, electro-industrial, metal with electronic influences (Fear Factory), hip-hop, nu-metal, coldwave/aggro-industrial (Ministry) then you'll probably totally dig this album.
Also, check out Jhonen Vasquez's video for "Shut Me Up" on myspace (or just do a google search for it). The ex-Johnny the Homicidal Maniac/Squee/Invader Zim/etc. mastermind pulls off one of the funniest videos in a long time.
