5 out of 5 stars Just like you remember.......2007-06-11

Writing this from the perspective of someone who has gone to great lengths to acquire decent David Cassidy music for his fiancee, I can tell you that this CD is probably one of the best ones I have found. It blends classic Partridge Family hits with modern David Cassidy, and every song sounds wonderful. There was enough of the old stuff to keep even me interested, and the "new" music was actually quite good. David has a fantastic singing voice which is often overlooked because of the bubble-gum pop that he did in the 70's...but after seeing him live in April (took my fiancee for her birthday), I can honestly tell you that he's still got it! And so does this CD...you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2007-04-12

This cd is an excellent mix of David Cassidy songs with Partridge Family highlights interspersed. It is a very interesting concept to set it up this way.

Anyone can argue over what has been omitted or included for we all have our Partridge favorites. The important thing is it is an excellent overview of those very happy years and as another reviewer said - is remastered for the best sound quality yet with any of these collections.

It is an awesome listen and stays in my cd carousel all the time. A definite must for fans.

4 out of 5 stars Good, But Could Be Better..........2007-02-09

No doubt about it, the sound quality on this DC/PF cd is the best out there! And while the song selection is decent, it could be so much better!

Obviously, David had a hand...maybe the sole hand...in this song selection. Although he hates Doesn't Somebody Want to be Wanted, that is no excuse for leaving it off a greatest hits collection, since it was one of the highest charting PF singles. (Apparently he hates the song because he hates talking (not singing) during a song, a la Elvis' Are You Lonesome Tonight. But then why doesn't he object to his talking in Echo Valley 26809, which he includes in this set??) Also, if he was going to include songs after his Bell label days, why did he stop at I Write the Songs and Darlin' (which is a terribly truncated version) and not include, say, Lyin' to Myself? He should simply have gone solely with the 1970-1974 period. And You Are Always On My Mind instead of, say, Friend and a Lover, or Brown Eyes, or Point Me, or so many other great choices??!

Anyway, it still includes most of the best PF/DC songs, and for that, it is definitely worth a purchase!

5 out of 5 stars Could It Be Forever: The Greatest Hits - David Cassidy.......2007-02-01

Absolutely brilliant album from start to finish. Wonderful to revisit music from my teenage years. exactly as I remembered him.

5 out of 5 stars Plus & Minus + 5 stars.......2006-12-15

I know all those hard core PF and DC fans will be on this review, but the fact is...YES, another collection. I say keep them coming. Maybe someday they will include the unreleased PF songs as well as David's First Bell B-side to Cherish called All I Wanna Do Is Touch You and his last Bell B-side to If I Didn't Care called Frozen Noses. Neither have ever been released on LP or CD.

This collection gives an overall view of Cassidy & Partridge hits and most popular songs. Minus the hits & singles Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted, David's least favorite track, as well as Am I Losing You, Friend And A Lover, Looking For a Good Time, Daydream and Please Please Me. I Am A Clown is the edited version and If I Didn't Care is the unedited version. Could It Be Forever sounds slightly different, but not sure why.

The sound quality is the best I have heard so far from any Partridge Family or David Cassidy CD! It gives a fatter and fuller feel as the original LP's do. Summer Days, One Night Stand, You Are Always On My Mind and Ricky's Tune some of the added tracks not usually found on previous collections.

The artwork is minimal and the inside info is skimpy. The fact that it has been remastered is what makes this a CD to have.

5 out of 5 stars Not for fans..........2006-04-20

If you don't have any Faithless albums then by all means get this before you spring for the full collection. It's a good sample of the wonder that is Faithless.

I have all their albums and an embarrassing number of singles, so I got this one in case any of the tracks were different. Sadly the only variation is that some of the tracks are shortened Radio Edits rather than the full track.

If you already have Reverence, Sunday 8pm, Outrospective and No Roots, then better spend the money on the "Why Go?" single import which has the brilliantly smooth Hoxton Whores remix.

5 out of 5 stars I continue to have faith in their ability to create great dance music.......2005-12-29

1997 was the year. "Insomnia" by Faithless had swept over the dance floor. The ensemble's unique echoic sound would last through their numerous albums, but always bringing in new elements to keep their musical proposal fresh. Unlike others that seem more meant to fulfill a contract, this Greatest Hits compilation does do them justice and presents the true best of their works. Almost nine years later, I hear the Monster Mix of "Insomnia" on this album, and it takes me back to the day. Definitely my faith in Faithless' ability to create great dance music is as strong today as ever.

5 out of 5 stars Good collection.......2005-06-01

For sure, I must recommend to buy all the original albums including remixes, but this is because I love Faithless.
If you are not a Faithless fan, but you like electronic music, you must have this album. This compilation is very well done, you get the best and buying it you'll not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Best is the perfect title.......2007-07-07

The music included on this CD is the very best of Rex's career. It speaks from the heart. You can always tell what he is truely feeling just by what he sings about in his music.
These 2 albums when they debuted originally were my strenth and inspriiraton after my husbnad died.
Without this music years later when both of my son's passed away I would not have had the strength to continue.
There are times that others do not realize the power of their work as well as the impact it has on others.
Next time you plug this CD in listen to the words that Rex is saying. The meaning is truly timeless.
Thank You Rex for putting this out again for the next generation to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Sighs.......2006-11-03

Just FYI it is true that amazon has the wrong title selections for this CD on the first 6 selections. Those are the songs from the movie Sooner or Later, which is a sweet romantic comedy set in the 70's. If you are a die hard Rex fan than this CD is a must for your collection. Rex's voice smolders, no other word for it. So if you are nostalgic for music from the latter 70's-early 80's this is the one for you. Rex has a website and offers a more recent version of the favorites (You take my breath away CD), but this captures his maturing voice. Not at all bad, but I am partial to his earlier recordings. They have a heat all their own, and that takes my breath away!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A quick correction..........2006-08-03

This is a great CD for longtime fans, but I was a little disappointed -- Amazon's tracklist for the first six songs is wrong. This is actually his first and third solo albums ("Sooner or Later" and "Everlasting Love") complete, and in the same sequence as on the original vinyl. It does not have the tracks listed from his second album, "Forever" -- I guess we're just going to need to wait for that and "Camouflage" to be released on CD, too!

5 out of 5 stars Rex Lives!.......2006-08-02

If there are more than five stars I could rate this cd, I would give it more than five stars. It deserves it. I practically browsed through every record stores I knew looking for any album by Rex Smith that contained the songs "Oh Girl" and "What becomes of the Broken-Hearted", to no avail. I even e-mailed the guys from this website about it and they told me that Rex Smith didn't sing the songs that I just mentioned. But I insisted. Then, after long years of waiting, and hoping, here it is. At last! The Rex Smith I have been waiting for is on my computer screen, smiling at me, as if saying: "So, what are you waiting for?" The cd is quite pricey, though, but, hey, it's not very often that dreams come true. It's really worth every penny. The first 10 songs I have on vinyl, on two LPs actually. But it is the last 8 songs that I was hoping to find. I give each of the songs 5 stars. These songs are from an album, the title of which I don't remember anymore. I had them on cassette back in the '80s. And to reproduce them on cd along with the rest of the tracks is just awesome and one-of-a-kind. Whoever compiled these songs is a genius and knows what music is all about. So, guys, if you like Rex Smith, are a fan of Rex Smith, or are just curious to hear how Rex gives justice to the oldies, this is your chance to listen to him. So, what are you waiting for?

If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.

5 out of 5 stars Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25

Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

5 out of 5 stars Decipher.......2006-12-21

Ahh, After Forever - home to Floor Jansen, owner of the finest vocal chords this side of the known universe and hands down the most ridiculous frontwoman in Scandinavian B&B metal (that is, beauty and the beast, for reasons which quickly become evident as one listens to the music). To put it simply, I just cannot appreciate any of the other female voices that have crossed my ears after listening to Floor wail away for an hour. Where their voices are pretty, soothing, and gentle; Floor's voice is a beautiful, powerful, and stunning force of nature. Her delivery is so pure and so unmarred by any detectable deficiency that it's like listening to angels roar in your ear... or at least, that's what I imagine it would sound like. Then there's her range - the notes she hits and holds with absolutely no strain are unreal.

Anyway, before this review becomes an obsessive essay about Miss Jansen...

Decipher is a very elegant album. The mixture of metallic and symphonic elements is presented in a way that seems perfectly natural, as if metal and symphony were destined at some point to join impeccably; that point, of course, being Decipher. It does not lean heavily toward the power metal side as with Nightwish, nor does it ever feel as watered down as Within Temptation, nor as overly dreamy and forgiving as Leaves' Eyes... it is a very delicate balance of all associated elements - composed intelligently, produced professionally, and performed flawlessly - and the average age of the band at the time of this recording was 19!

The listener is initially greeted with "Ex Cathedra", which is an orchestral chamber piece filled with choirs, chanters, violins, and otherwise lush classical instrumentation. It builds, swelling dynamically until it finally bursts into "Monolith of Doubt", which is certainly a change of pace. Double bass drums, crashing cymbals, and powerful riffs provide a driving metallic foundation that's strikingly enhanced by symphonic flourishes and, soon after, Floor's glorious voice harmonizing with the soft yet sinister growls of Mark Jansen (no relation to Floor). The highlight here is at around 2:53, where Floor holds a most intense note (I'm not sure which exactly, but probably high enough to shatter glass) for about 10 seconds - it really needs to be heard to be believed. The first of the two-part "My Pledge of Allegiance" is also very noteworthy. The song has a Middle Eastern theme, and features several breathtaking moments from Floor (possibly even more so than on "Monolith of Doubt") where she hits and holds a note so high, perfect, and tranquil that it makes me shiver.

The remainder of the album moves through similar arrangements. Floor and Mark continually trade off vocal duties in dramatic fashion atop exquisite musicianship that focuses as much on power and impact as it does on beauty and elegance. "Imperfect Tenses" is a pretty duet between Floor and a guest tenor vocalist... it doesn't do much for me in particular, but it's quite touching. "Forlorn Hope", the album closer, has a similar feel to "Monolith of Doubt" with a tad more drama, and is an excellent finish. Of note is the drumming of Andre Borgman - his style is far more varied and dynamic than what you normally hear from bands like this; his foot and cymbal work is very interesting, and his rhythmic phrasing is a pleasure to listen to.

All in all, After Forever don't win any points for originality, as this style of music is damn popular over in that region of the world... but, to put it bluntly, Floor Jansen obliterates her peers in such embarrassing fashion that there really is no question as to who's at the top of the symphonic metal food chain over in the mighty Netherlands.

5 out of 5 stars "She kept her beauty concealed behind a curtain of suspense".......2006-05-16

That is the first line of the 3rd track, and likewise, beautiful music is concealed behind this CD cover. I have two other AF CD's that I'm not too happy with (and therefore did not review), but I suspected there was a 5 star rating out there somewhere for them and this is it. With violins, an oboe, a choir, powerful drums and guitars, interesting melodies and an exquisite female operatic voice (maybe even better than Tarja?), it can be nothing less. And even the lyrics are good - none of the usual negativism or fatalism. One of the best examples is from track 10, The Key: "There's no excuse in ignorance/No time for weakness or regret/Face your mirror without doubt/Your reflection without remorse." Now that is the way to look at life!

After forever. What could be after forever? I have no idea, but if I ever get there, I certainly hope they have music like this.

The above was entered 5/16/06. 3/29/07 Update: I have been listening to this CD more and more and decided I wanted to add it to my top 5 list. But I couldn't decide which of the five CD's currently there to delete, so now I have a top 6 list. (Please see my profile for a brief discussion of my rating philosophy.)

5 out of 5 stars AF is great - this is their best album.......2006-03-02

Decipher was the first album I listened to from After Forever. At first I was not sure if I liked it because it was just so different from anything I had ever heard before. But it grew on me and I absolutely love their music now. I have almost all of their cd's now, including the new one, Remagine. But Decipher is still my favorite - the songs are just so complex and diverse. I just can't wait for the day when they tour in the US!!

I would recommend Decipher as your first AF purchase!

5 out of 5 stars Find the emphasis in your own reality..........2005-06-19

Ahh...ridiculous import prices, must you annoy me so? Buy it at www.theendrecords.com, it's only $15. No need to say thanks.

Onto my review...

Decipher, like The Gathering's Mandylion and Within Temptation's Mother Earth before it, is one of those albums that just seemed to come out of nowhere and at the same time revolutionize its own genre (which in this case is of course symphonic gothic metal). The factor I've always loved about After Forever is their progressive element - a thread that, in fact, many other gothic metal bands lack. I find that many will compare AF's music to that of the Finnish quintet Nightwish, and I'm not completely sure why. Sure, they both have two of the best voices on the planet fronting their music, but when it comes down to it - AF take the cake for being the most experimental.

Decipher is After Forever's second studio release, produced by Stephen van Haestregt (drummer for Within Temptation/Paralysis/Ambeon) and released in 2001. The line-up includes frontwoman Floor Jansen, Mark Jansen (now in Epica) and Sander Gommans on guitar, Lando van Gils on synths, Luuk van Gerven as bassist, and is rounded out by drummer Andre Borgman (who is currently undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with cancer). Anyone familiar with the works of Arjen A. Lucassen should remember Floor's soprano from various Ayreon and Star One records. This band has had well-deserved success throughout their home country of the Netherlands, allowing them to tour with such names as Samael, Orphanage, Nightwish and even an invitation to the European leg of Ozzfest in 2002.

Decipher begins with the haunting "Ex Cathedra", an overture of choir and synths that displays the intricacy of AF's music. Lead single "Monolith of Doubt" follows, a dynamic number in which Floor is given an opportunity to show off her wide vocal range - definitely one of AF's better songs, and a fan favorite. Then we have the heavier tracks like "My Pledge of Allegiance #1" and "Zenith" that utilize the male vocals, courtesy of Mark Jansen. "Emphasis" is the closest AF will come to being "radio-friendly" on Decipher - an excellent headbanger where Floor once again takes the spotlight with vocal duties (and particularly shines on the wonderfully written chorus). "Intrinsic", a haunting and rather eerie ballad, is perhaps my favorite After Forever song (it's really hard to say), featuring some well-executed oboe sections and sporadically placed acoustic passages. The other ballad, "Imperfect Tenses" is also great, and shows a more atmospheric side to their sound. Closing Decipher is "Forlorn Hope", a song apparently written about the wars in the Middle East. What can I say...this song will KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF!!!!!!!!!! Believe me, I do not exaggerate, but the choral sections on this piece are the best After Forever have ever done. Both Floor and Mark's vocals are perfectly done and the guitars (especially a little solo towards the end) are marvelous. The album closes with the line "stop to let them suffer." Of course, if you have the digipak, you are presented with two re-recordings of "Pledge #1" and "Forlorn Hope" with new guitarist Bas Maas. These are completely unnecessary, as they sound identical to the originals, but nice packaging and a cool sticker are nothing to complain about.

Like I said, After Forever are one of the few bands pushing the gothic metal genre into new directions. Many will compare them to countrymates Within Temptation, but the two are also very different. AF's music is more metallic and operatic, while WT's is poppier and possesses a somewhat Celtic feel. Both bands are great, and usually if you like one you'll like the other, but for fans of the more extreme genres of metal I'd recommend After Forever slightly over Within Temptation (my favorite band, by the way). Do yourself a favor and check this one out....NOW!

10/10

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2004-10-04

One of the best albums I own. IMO, the best album of After Forever. Floor's voice is incredible and powerful and she uses it also in operatic way. I don't think she's a professional opera singer, but very good anyway. There are very catchy songs with interesting lyrics, for example "Monolith of Doubt", "Emphasis" and "Intrinsic". Buy it now, that's all I can say:)

5 out of 5 stars An important part of any Gordon Lightfoot collection.......2006-06-08

If you have followed Gordon Lightfoot's music, this collection of songs rings true for a career that has lasted over forty years. The Title song "Harmony" draws you into Gordon's musical, life essence retrospective.

The most memorable songs move from temporary or perhaps permanent loss of powers (Harmony) to overcoming regrets and desparation and carrying on with some dignity (Shellfish) to a brilliant and timeless love song (Inspiration Lady).

I think Gordon was just having some fun on Couchiching (a song about his hometown), and the Hotel No. I'll sometimes listen to these for a lighthearted break from some of the more serious songs on this collection.

To the barbed criticism of another reviewer, I respond that "this is a comeback album from a near fatal illness." There are few singer-songwriters who have this kind of resiliance. Gordon is a Folk artist, and if one does not think his vocals are as pretty or macho or sexy as they were on Sundown, then they're missing the point. "Harmony" is about looking back at life and carrying on in the face of time. Listen to Shellfish (another prime track on this CD), specifically "There's still a way to go, about a thousand miles or so." Why do some people not want to hear that, or a most extraordinary voice that has been impacted by a near death experience?

There are tales and experiences in life that are the product of age and experience that are tempered by weariness and frailty and transcendent hope. That's what this set of songs is about. "Harmony - if you pass me by I will miss you, and if you can cry I can cry too. Harmony - have you gone away, have you gone to stay?" This is the gentle lament accompanied by old faded Martin that still sounds sweet.

There's nothing wrong with buying collections and "greatest hits," but to understand and appreciate Mr. Lightfoot, you should follow his timeline album by album (or CD by CD). It is a journey worth taking and "Harmony" is in its own right a key entry in our Canadian friend's brilliant contribution to folk and folk-pop-country music.

2 out of 5 stars Wow, no wonder this is # 108,080 on amazon.com.......2006-05-08

Sorry, the musical part is tolerable but his voice died years ago. This is not the Gord I have come to love and enjoy. Nothing new in the way of classical Gord songwriting, so I was sorry to add this to my collection. He needs to give it up.

4 out of 5 stars Still amazing after all these years.......2004-08-26

I was first introduced to Gordon's work in 1967 by a friend whose family summered not very far from Orillia. I have listened and loved the man and his work all this time. When I first heard Harmony, I thought it was a good album considering how it was put together. The more I have listened, the more I have been amazed. His lyrics still send chills and speak to the heart and mind. The music goes hand in hand with those well-crafted words. In many ways, I think this is one of the best albums he has given us. It truly is a gift. Thank you, Gordon.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars SONY's attempt at self-redemption?.......2006-08-02

The CD shown here is apparently the new edition of the infamous disk inflicted upon the listening public by SONY/BMG/RCA which resulted in several law suits because of its inclusion of a particularly nasty bit of spyware/malware (a "root kit") which would be buried in any Windows computer system into which the disk might, innocently or otherwise, be inserted. It was a spectacularly stupid, sneaky, and downright mean attempt to control copying of the disk's contents, and as such it earned universal opprobrium when it was discovered and publicized by a third party. The infected disk has now been recalled and owners of it (such as me) may supposedly return it for replacement with a non-infected version.

My first bit of advice on the recording, then, is to check carefully to insure you do not have an infected disk. (SONY's website has a list of their recordings, complete with disk numbers, which contain the rootkit, and, yes, there are sadly a number of them.) If you determine you have such a disk you should either return it for exchange or put a note on it to warn against insertion into a computer. My infected disk is labeled as RCA Victor 8 2876 68883-2. (Further information/discussion of this topic can be found on the Internet.)

The present recording, the 2006 Australian Tour Edition, presumably is clear of spyware and, I suppose as an apology of sorts, includes two "bonus" tracks. (I don't have this copy, so I will only comment on the first 12 pieces.)

I am a newcomer to Amici Forever (though they've been around awhile) and no fan of "fusion" music in general, but I bought the disk because some of my friends are fans and I wanted to see for myself what they were like. In general, I must say that I rather like this disk, though it is obviously something quite distinct from the classical music from which much of it is derived. It is a transformation of familiar classic tunes into a populist genre characterized by strong emotional intensity, highly synthesized and sonically processed sound, and often prominent percussion effects. (The waveforms show clear evidence of volume-limiting, with sustained passages right up to the allowed maximum. This creates the effect of great loudness and intensity, even passion.)

The singers possess very fine voices for this idiom, which seems partly an outgrowth of the "Three Tenors" phenomenon. A good bit of the singing is in Italian, but English is well represented, along with bits of Spanish, French, and even background Maori.

I think these pieces should be treated as creations in their own right (even though many are derivative) and judged on their own merits as to musical appeal, imagination, and artistry.

"La Fiamma Sacra" (the sacred flame) is sung in English, despite its Italian title, and tells the story of a low-born man endowed with the gift of a singing voice which destines him to greatness. It is sweet, sentimental (not wishy-washy!), and altogether loveable.

"Nella Fantasia" (in a fantasy or dream) is widely known as a tenor vehicle derived from Morricone's film soundtrack for "The Mission." (I believe Bocelli and Watson, among others, have recorded it.) It is sung in Italian, and is very fine and satisfying in this version.

"The Prayer" (la preghiera), a composed song in Italian and English, is also widely known, especially in the version by Bocelli and Dion. Here it is no less delightful with five voices instead of two.

"Aranjuez Ma Pensee" (Aranjuez my thought) though titled in French is sung in the Spanish appropriate to its subject, the historic town just south of Madrid. The tune is a well-known and gorgeous theme from Joaquin Rodrigo's guitar concerto "Concierto de Aranjuez" set with words to make it a kind of love song for a place. The words are lovely and poetic and the piece is hauntingly and exotically beautiful. (Rodrigo is buried in Aranjuez, and I doubt if this borrowing makes him turn over in his grave.)

"So Far Away" is another love song for a place, this time New Zealand, "the land of the long white cloud." It is a very nice composed song sung in English with ethnic touches (a celtic pipe and background chorus singing in Maori). It has an irresistible loveliness.

"Nostalgia" (la mia nostalgia) is a derivation from Rachmaninov's immensely popular and often quoted second piano concerto. It is a song of loneliness and longing for a past love whose music tells the story without the need to understand the Italian words.

"Core 'Ngrato" (ungrateful heart) is an old Neapolitan chestnut sung in Italian dialect by tenors from as far back as Caruso and on up to today's cohort. It complains of the lover's mistreatment by the unappreciative Catari. It's a fine, impassioned song, and this group does not stint in its presentation.

"Land & Freedom" (terra e liberta) is perhaps the most surprising inclusion here, for it is a transformation of the supremely beautiful second movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 into another song of nostalgia for a beloved place, now distant or even vanished, associated with freedom, music, and poetry. In this Italian language song, the composer uses Beethoven's own exquisite countermelody, along with his strikingly lovely harmonies. With music from such a master, how could this song be anything but transcendant?

"Mon Coeur S'Ouvre A Ta Voix" (at your voice my heart opens) is the most popular aria from Camille Saint-Saens' opera "Samson and Delilah," sung by Delilah to express her love for Samson (with some response by him). This arrangement, which becomes a duet, preserves much of the original, and is properly ecstatic as sung in the original French.

"Recondita Armonia" (hidden harmony) is another well-known aria, this time the tenor Cavaradossi's song about his fascination with the contrasting beauties of two female figures (from Puccini's opera "Tosca"). Here he gets support from other Amici members, but the music itself is left mostly intact, except for the instrumental accompaniment and vocal expansion. It's quite convincing.

"Adagio" is another borrowing from a purely instrumental classic, Albinoni's adaptation of pre-existing tunes to create his immensely popular "Adagio for Strings." The voices here follow the interweaving melodic lines of those strings, singing the newly-supplied Italian words of a lover's yearning for his absent love, and ending with "I feel beating within me this music which I invented for you." The result of this fusion of the very old with new words and vocal/instrumental sounds is likely to be much more accessible to most of today's hip-hop generation than the original, for all its classic elegance and beauty.

"Ocean Heart" (oceano cuore) is another instrumental music adaptation, being a setting of new Italian words to an arrangement of music from Aram Khatchaturian's ballet "Spartacus." The original music here is much less familiar than that of the other two, perhaps emboldening the arranger to take a bit more liberty (a new countermelody is added to the composer's own tune). This attractive, more midstream arrangement may waken many new ears to Khatchaturian's lovely, pensively yearning melody.

In summary, I applaud this new version of the CD for its success in translating some of classical music's finest products into a form likely to appeal to a much wider audience than heretofore. It's not for everyone though: classical music purists will likely reject it as overblown, overheated, and just too remote from the original versions. Those with parochial musical tastes may dislike its cosmopolitan nature with untranslated foreign words. Still, youngish people who embrace the world's diversity and who were brought up in the tradition of rock concerts will probably find much enjoyment in the sheer vibrancy and musical pleasure here.

So, within its genre and assuming it's free of nasty software surprises, I give it 5 stars.

To the older, infected CD, I give nothing but a big raspberry!

5 out of 5 stars Classic hip hop from a classic DJ. Don't sleep!.......1999-09-07

Kenny Dope laces us with some of the hottest hip hop tracks featuring masterful beat production and neck snappin' flavor. Three discs, the first mixed, the last 2, unmixed full length versions of the jams. Disc 2, drops EPMD's seminal classic YOU GOTS TO CHILL. Lazzy molasses beats and the E-R-I-C-K dropping science.

"Relax yo mind and let your conscience be free and get down to the sounds of EPMD!"

Redman peeps in on TONIGHTS DA NITE. "I'm after the gold, and after that the platinum . . ." Redman's oratory skills will have you going "Ba-Bum, Ba-Bum" with the beats! Other top tracks on this album: track 2, OFF THE BOOKS by The Beatnuts. Listen to the track that put Big Pun (Still not a Player) on the map; the early 1990's Harlem jeep rider anthem DWYCK by Gangster with a lil help from Nice & Smooth. Listen for Guru's super classic line, "I can take the money, NEVER have ta run!"

Be sure to look out for SHINING STAR by Sunz of Man, I GOT IT MADE by Special Ed, ILL STREET BLUES by the lispy rapper, Kool G Rap & his sidekick DJ Polo. Disc 1, the Kenny Dope mixed comp with the water torcher rap single, COME CLEAN featuring ruffneck rapper Jeru The Damaja.

Naughty By Nature hit us with the UPTOWN ANTHEM droppin' that 19-naughty-1 flavor.

Hip Hop, many will argue, is divided into BP (Before Puffy) and AP (After Puffy). If this is true, this album celebrates all the glory of hip hop, sacharin free. Bravo Kenny for a look back at the super tracks that laid the foundation of what hip hop is today.

For starters, all the hits are here; the chronology is immaterial because the songwriting and performances are top notch. The remastering adds punch and, I feel, an overall edginess to each track. Listening to these songs, track by track, reaffirms that The Charlatans are a brilliant act; there is strength in their diversity; although the songs vary in approach, given the time frame, it is the absolute character of this band that shines through. I must admit, I have everything they've ever done, but this collection is still a stunner on all fronts.

A must for long time fans and and a great introduction for anyone interested in great music.
