5 out of 5 stars No One Like Ernest Tubb.......2006-08-25

Ernest Tubb was not the best signer. In fact there is a story about him singing a song that had a rather low note in it. Red Foley was there at the time and someone said to Red, "I bet you wish you could hit that low note". His reply was "I'll bet Ernest wishes he could hit that note". In spite of his less than perfect singing, Tubb had a relaxed, pleasant style that never fails to please. He had fiercely loyal fans too. This is a nice collection and is a great intro to the music of Tubb. There is something so familiar and comfortable about Tubb's voice that just puts you at ease and makes you feel "at home". So what if he wasn't the best singer? He was a dedicated entertainer who kept touring and performing when his bad health should have prevented it and probably led to his early demise. Tubb was a pioneer in the country music field and was only the 6th person inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. (The first was Jimmie Rodgers, who Tubb greatly admired and emulated in many ways, at least in his early music. You won't find the earliest Tubb here; it's more of the big songs of his heyday. If you are a true country music fan, this is an essential album for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Strongest Single Disc Tubb Set.......2006-07-29

With his relaxed, drawling baritone and notes as wide open as Texas, Ernest Tubb embodied Lone Star honky-tonk music of the 1940s. In essence, he was the link between country bluesman Jimmie Rodgers (whose widow made Tubb her protégé) and Lefty Frizzell.

The Definitive Collection begins with his trademark 1941 "Walkin' The Floor Over You," whose electric guitar was new for country recordings. Bar owners with juke boxes, it seems, were telling Tubb that acoustic guitars couldn't be heard above their crowds' noise. From 1941-42, his compositions "Mean Mama Blues" and "You Nearly Lose Your Mind" credibly mimic Rodgers' style, but as time went on, he was dubbed The Texas Troubadour.

Of the 25 tracks here, 16 are from the 1940s and five from the `50s. Among the four `60s songs, "Waltz Across Texas" became his second signature song though it climbed no higher than 34 on 1965's charts. His only pop top-tenner, a 1950 duet with Red Foley on Leadbelly's "Goodnight Irene," competed with their Decca label mates The Weavers' dreamy pop rendition. A 1949 "Blue Christmas" has lines that Elvis Presley's later version dropped. Among the GI songs ("Soldier's Last Letter," "It's Been So Long, Darling," "Rainbow At Midnight"), 1946's "Filipino Baby" lacks the short repetitions that Cowboy Copas's rival single and Pearl Harbour's 1980 cover employed.

Those looking for more Tubb should seek out Collector's Choice 40 track The Definitive Ernest Tubb Hits Collection, which is out of print but available through Amazon dealers at a fairly reasonable price.

3 out of 5 stars Best of Ernest Tubb.......2006-02-25

Perhaps best appreciated by someone who is looking to fill out a collection of earlier western music. The sound quality is good for its time, and the arrangements are pretty, with a beautiful rendition of "Walkin' the Floor Over You", but most people would be happier with the livelier Asleep at the Wheel versions of this and other numbers.

    5 out of 5 stars A Legend.......2005-10-24

Here is a solid compilation of Ernest Tubb; a true Legend of Country & Western Music. Folks, Ernest Tubb was authentic, and that is what music is all about.....especially Country Music. Noone did more for Western music than ET, and his contribution to true Honky Tonk will never be measured. The fact that he gave us Jack Greene and Cal Smith are enough, but his own style of doing a song changed our music forever. This album is just another great release by 20th Century Masters; and the recordings are original. In fact, you may think they are too original....as a few of the original scratches and fuzz still exist. Of course, this album contains "Walking the Floor" and "Waltz Across Texas", but even more impressive is the inclusion of "Drivin Nails" and "Two Glasses Joe"; as well as one of the first true male/female duets of "Sweet Thang" with Loretta (Conway had nothing on ET). a truly enjoyable listen.

    5 out of 5 stars Young Fogie.......2005-04-26

First off, I usually run away from "best of" CDs faster than a greased pig, but the price was low enough to encourage further review. Like some of the others who wrote before, I will mention that SOME OF THESE RECORDINGS WERE DONE MONO, AS THEY WERE ORIGINALLY RELEASED... I found that to be a nice addition to my collection, since I have other E.T. versions of most of this material. The liner notes, though not large were informative & well written. The selection was a good representation of E.T.'s
innovation and catalog. I would state that Ernest Tubb may take some aquired tasting, but his imperfections soon end up to be endearing in this over-manipulated age. Sweet Thang featured Loretta at her vocal apex. Drivin' Nails In My Coffin, athough edgier on Earnest Tubb - Live 1965, is one of the most under- appreciated songs in country music. This one's goin' in the Juke!

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF ERNEST TUBB.......2003-10-05

HI,, ITS A BRILLENT CD I HAVE 4 OFF HIS CDS ,, HE IS THE BEST I WILL BE GETTING MORE OF HIS CDS WHEN I WORK OUT HOW TO BUY THEM CHEERS DOUG

5 out of 5 stars Good CD-The Original Recordings !.......2001-11-07

This is a dog gone good cd. These are the original recordings remastered. Obviously the person who was dissapointed has never heard or grew up listening to remakes of songs Ernest made later on. But for us Country music purists this cd is excellent.Keep in mind that Tubbs peak period was the 1940's. He scored his biggest hits on Billboards Country chart during that period. Hits from him were more sporadic in the 50's,60's and 70's.As far as the quality-back in those days everything was mono and they didn't have the sophisticated equipment in the studio like they have today. If you wanna hear ET the way his records sounded when they were originally released get this cd today. This is ET at his best !

In 1965 the honky-tonk pioneer Ernest Tubb became the sixth artist inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. With more than 25 years of recording experience under his belt and legions of fans to his credit, the charismatic Texan had nothing left to prove. That fact didn't stop Tubb and his Troubadours from touring the United States incessantly, playing not concert halls but small clubs. This marvelous double-CD set captures such a night at Seattle's Spanish Castle and is an indispensable slice of country-music history. Boasting impeccable sound quality, it includes a host of Tubb's hits performed by a top-of-the-line band featuring lead guitarist Leon Rhodes and steel wizard Buddy Charlton, not to mention Jack Greene and Cal Smith, future stars in their own right. Tubb's rough-edged but relaxed and easygoing baritone was limited from day one and years of booze and cigarettes didn't help matters, but few were as expressive and genuine--check out "(A Memory) That's All You'll Ever Be to Me" for proof. His magnetic personality shines through whether he's singing his heart out, laughing through the lyrics, or chatting with the band and audience. Meanwhile, the Troubadours float from blistering hardcore tonk to jazz tunes like Duke Ellington's "C Jam Blues" with ease. --Marc Greilsamer

    Album Description

This historic recording is the only true live recording of Ernest Tubb and his Texas Troubadours. Recorded in 1965 by Texas Troubadour Jan Kurtis, the sound quality is absolutely phenomenal. This 2 CD set captures the feeling of actually sitting in the audience during one of Ernest's shows. Members of the Texas Troubadours are also featured here with performances by Cal Smith, Jack Greene and a drum solo by Jan Kurtis the only known drum solo ever recorded in a country CD. In the words of Ernest's son Justin, "If you close your eyes and listen to this album, you can recapture the feeling of actually sitting in the audience. If you never saw him, this is the next best thing. And to me, "In Person" was the only way to appreciate Ernest Tubb."

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful postcard from 1965.......2005-11-27

When Ernest Tubb and the Texas Troubadours rolled their tour bus into Tacoma, Washington in 1965, former Troubadour drummer Jan Kurtis was there to record the show. The result is a wonderful un-retouched snap shot of Tubb's live show. Tubb is thoroughly relaxed, taking requests, laughing at blown solos, dedicating songs to people in the audience. During one number a flashbulb in an audience member's camera audibly explodes and Tubb starts laughing about how he thought it was a jealous husband from their previous stop after guitarist Leon Rhodes. ("And if I was scared, think about how Leon felt!"). The Troubadours, led by Rhodes and steel guitarist Buddy Charlton are in fine form. After years of smoking Tubb's voice is sepulchral, but who cares? Remarkably fine sound quality.

5 out of 5 stars Let's all Walk that Floor one more time!.......2002-07-28

This is a fine performance by a country legend. The interactions with the audience and band are great , and the quality is very good. If you buy one ET record, get this. Only negative is that it doesn't have " Waltz across Texas"

    5 out of 5 stars ERNEST TUBB - THE COMPLETE 1965 SHOW.......1999-12-17

This Texas honky-tonker possessed a charismatic, pared-down style that featured his deep, distinct Texas drawl, and a relaxed, deliberate, behind-the-beat delivery. Boiling his career down to 16 tracks is no easy task, but this single-CD collection offers an effective mix of hit records and noncommercial career highlights. 1941's "Walking the Floor Over You" made Tubb a star and remains a country standard. Drinking songs such as "Two Glasses, Joe" accompany tear-jerkers about lost love and topical songs about World War II soldiers' experiences both overseas and upon their return. Tubb's Texas Troubadours--especially guitarist Billy Byrd--provide simple but enormously effective support. Tubb's easy-going, loping style distinguishes him from most other honky-tonk stars. --Marc Greilsamer

I'm so sorry to tell you this, A Music Fan, but, darling, there is just no one out there today who can take his place or even come close. True country music, I'm afraid, is gone forever except in these albums, CDs, etc. that they've left for us. Thanks to Amazon, I'm able to purchase the CDs in order to save my LPs and cassettes.

Ernest Tubb is a true country music singer. His songs have feeling and tell a story. That is what country music is supposed to be. The new country might be okay for some, but give me "Walkin The Floor Over You" or "Waltz Across Texas" any day. The simplicity of the music, the feeling in the vocals, the meaning to the lyrics, please let's put some Country in our Country. Take Us Back. To Those Honky Tonk Days!

This album features 70s re-recordings of ET's hits. His Texas Troubodors at the time were a good band, but Ernest's voice had coarsened quite a bit by then. You can now get the original 40s and 50s recordings of Ernest's hits on the Hall of Fame series. Even the 1958 remakes originally on the Decca/MCA "Greatest Hits" and "Ernest Tubb Story" were pretty good...but this album is for completists only.

    E. Tubb was the best of the best, I remember his songs on this CD from when I was a child, there is a song I believe he recorded called My Mother Was A Lady, I would really like to find that one. I remember crying when he sang My Baby's Book and the songs about the war, several of my uncles were in that war, some were killed,Mr Tubb related to all of them.

    5 out of 5 stars Unbelieveable.......2006-03-13

Here is a 4-CD Set that costs less than most 2-CD Sets; and this one has 100 songs; all original. You cannot go wrong with this one. A fine booklet is also included which provides info regarding discography. All of ET's big hits are here, as well as some lesser known numbers. There's duets with the legendary Red Foley, and you can hear the incredible lead guitar which made his music so recognizable, despite the ever-changing lineup of guitarists on display here. Proper Records released this set, and they deserve a big thumbs-up on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value .......2005-12-29

Wow - a compendium of the best of Ernest Tubb from 1941-1950 at a bargain price. Sound quality is excellent (given the age of the masters) and the music is quintessential Texas Troubador, including the original versions of most of his biggest hits. Proper has put out a set which restores the early Tubb catalog in a manner befitting the efforts of Bear Family but at about 1/3 of the price of an equivalent Bear collection. Ernest was in his vocal prime with these recordings, and (although his bands here were not as good as later collections of Texas Troubadors -particularly the mid-60s batch), The Texas Troubadors augment ET's efforts in an appropriate manner. Those who saw ET in his later years will note that the arrangements of some of his 40s hits changed over time, particularly that of his signature tune "Walking The Floor Over You" , which sounds relatively acoustic here compared to the rather jazzy number it became in the hands of later, more amplified, versions of the Texas Troubadours

    5 out of 5 stars ERNEST TUBB.......2005-10-07

GOOD OLE ERNEST TUBB, HE'S ANOTHER GOOD ONE, I GREW UP WITH HIS SONGS OR MOST OF THEM.

5 out of 5 stars I spent my misspent youth listening to Ernest Tubb.......2004-06-12

    I have Peter Harris to thank for bringing this boxed set to my attention. I had a small collection of Tubb's songs, but one in particular, which I always liked, I could not find anywhere;
probably because I had the name wrong: I thought it was "On My Way to Italy (From the Gulf of Mexico)". It was, instead, titled "Seaman's Blues." I could play it on the guitar, and knew the lyrics, but I wanted it by Ernest Tubb. Now I have it. Thanks again, Peter Harris (see his spotlight review.)

There are four CDs in this boxed set, with 25 songs on each, all by Ernest Tubb. Too many to critique them all, but if you are familiar with his singing, you won't need a critique. Contrary to another critic, I found the quality of the CD quite good. I'm always amazed at the number of critics who spend more time criticizing the technical quality of the vehicle (CD, DVD, etc.) than the quality of the singer's voice or instrumental skill of the side men.

These days, it is the digital mastering. In the old days it was the clicks and pops in the records. Well, in the beer halls on the Mex border, we were often too drunk to care, and we enjoyed the music for the music itself. T. Texas Tyler and Ernest Tubb were big with that audience. Marty Robbins was in the Navy at the time (along with me) and no one had yet heard of him. We never heard of Patsy Cline or Jim Reeves, either, although they may have been around. We surely knew Eddy Arnold, although he was not yet Pat Boone's father-in-law, and Red Foley.

So, don't expect soothing pop music from Ernest Tubb. It's country/western, beer hall music that you could sit and nurse your broken heart to all night. Run Western music backwards, as they say, and you get your girl back, your truck back, your dog back, your horse back, and you don't need Western music anymore. And that would be a shame.

      3 out of 5 stars 10 Original Decca Hits.......2003-09-20

A budget priced set with some hard to find sides. All of the music here sounds great except for the Chuck Berry song "Thirty days" and "Boogie Woogie Baby". These 2 songs are noticably taken from the original 78 rpm discs complete with surface noise. Aside from that it is still a good sampler from the Texas Troubadour.

5 out of 5 stars The famous Ernest Tubb gospel album, reduced to 10 songs.......2004-12-18

The original lp had 12 songs, so it makes n osense that they reissued it, minus two tracks one of them being a great version of "If We Never Meet Again This Side Of Heaven." However this cd is still essential for having ten classic western hillbilly swing/rockabilly versions of gospel classics like Hank Williams' I Saw The Light, the Family Bible, and The Old Rugged Cross. Great cd!

5 out of 5 stars Standard ET = Heavenly Country Music.......2003-12-11

It doesn't get better than this, folks. ET singing Family Bible, and Hank Williams' I Saw The Light, among others. Your standard ET record, which means an outstanding country music album. The price is right, too.
